DPReviewTV Instant Camera Shootout: Fujifilm Instax SQ6, Mini 90, Leica Sofort, Mint Instaflex TL70

Instax Film Shootout

If you weren’t hiding under a rock for the last decade, then you will have noticed that the instant film trend, launched back in 1972 with the iconic Polaroid SX-70 and ended in the nineties, is having an impressive revival thanks to Fujifilm Instax products in recent years.

But how was this revival made possible?

Fujifilm was just about to shut down their entire Instax production just like Polaroid did a few years earlier, when an unexpected event breathed new life into the agonizing market. You can find a more in-depth explanation of the several reasons of the boom here.

Since then, the sales numbers have skyrocketed over anything Fujifilm could have hoped and they passed from 100,000 sold cameras in 2004 to 7,500,000 sales in 2017. In the documentary “How Fujifilm survived the digital age”, a Fujifilm Instax employee says they simply can’t keep production up with the high demand.

The market is under firm control of Fujifilm and even more so the instax film market, which, as Polaroid says, is 99% controlled by Fujifilm, and we can now find endless versions of it, such as the Star Wars Instax Film, Comic Instax Film, Hello Kitty film, Candy Pop, Rainbow and so on and so forth.

Now, the instax-revival has motivated other companies to try to get a piece of the cake, too.

Polaroid (now owned by The Impossible Project) is fighting hard to try to regain their old glory, not only by offering their own Polaroid Instant Cameras and Polaroid Instant Printers, but also by bringing Fujifilm to court and accusing them that Fuji’s latest Instax Square Film design is a rip-off of Polaroids’ own film.

Of course as customers we can only be happy that more choices are available on the market now.

Now DPReview TV compared some of the Instant cameras on the market, which all take Fujifilm’s Instax Mini film:

Fujinon GF Rumored Lens Roadmap Update: Tilt Shift Lens, GF20-35mm, GF 80mmF1.4 (not in 2018) & More

internal Fujinon GF Lens Roadmap Leaked on FujiRumors
internal Fujinon GF Lens Roadmap Leaked on FujiRumors

Fujinon GF Lens Roadmap

You might remember how here on FujiRumors we leaked Fujifilm’s interal GF lens roadmap already back in April 2017 (see screenshot above)!

But time passed, and there is more to share and to update… so let’s do it today.

GF 80mm F1.4

We broke the rumor of a crazy fast GF 80mm F1.4 (!!!) medium format lens back in June 2017.

However, keep in mind that a Fujifilm manager said here that they need 2 years to discuss, develop and finally make a camera and even more than 2 years in case of lenses.

So if in June 2017, when we shared the GF 80mmF1.4 rumor, the discussions about the GF80mmF1.4 just started, then now, 1 year later, IF Fujifilm really decided to go ahead with it, it will take them well over 1 year to come out with it.

Again… if Fujifilm decided to make it all.

But even if Fujifilm decided to make it, you should not expect any GF 80mmF1.4 lens at Photokina 2018, and I’d personally would not expect it before 2020 anyway.

Don’t worry, there will be lots of other great gear to enjoy at Photokina 2018, such as the Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm GF 50R.

Tilt Shift, UWA & The New Roadmap

According to our sources, we must add also a tilt shift lens for the GF system to the list of rumored lenses shared back in April 2017, so the updated and complete rumored GF lens list is the following:

  • GF 35mm F2.8 (coming 2018)
  • GF 20-36mm F3.5-4.5 (in 2018 this or the GF 100-200)
  • GF 100-200mm F4.5-5.6 (in 2018 this or the GF 20-36)
  • GF 80mm F1.4 (not in 2018 – personally I’d not expect it before 2020)
  • Tilt Shift lens (coming 2018/2019)

Fujifilm plans to release 2/3 GF lenses a year, and since we already got the GF250mmF4 last month, we can expect a maximum of two more lenses in 2018.

Now, for 2018, the Fujinon GF 35mmF2.8 should be sure.

So now it’s your turn guys. Let us know which one you would prefer between the GF20-36, GF-100-200 and the tilt shift lens for 2018.

And make sure to join our Fujifilm GFX facebook group.

stay tuned,

Finally Somebody Did it: The Fujinon XF27mmF2.8 Pocket Test + a More Serious Review Too :)

Fujinon XF27mmF2.8 Review

If you follow FujiRumors also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, you will know that I am in LOVE with my Fujifilm X-E3. And you will also know, that the lens I use most on my X-E3 is the Fujinon XF 27mmF2.8.

And I don’t love my 27 just because it is so small, but also because it’s actually an astonishing performer for its size. It is really sharp, chromatic aberration and distortion are extremely well controlled… and yes… it is so tiny :) .

I do own plenty of other Fujinon lenses, and yes, the bigger guys like my XF35mmF1.4 are optically even better, but since I bought my XF27mm back in December, it has become my most used lens on my X-E3.

The reason is simple: the X-E3 with XF27mm just fits in everywhere. Hence, every time I leave my apartment, may it just be to pick up quickly my nephew from the kindergarden, I just grab my X-E3 and 27 and take it with me with no need to put in a bag or whatsoever. It fits in almost every pocket…. and speaking of pockets…

… somebody finally did it, the big XF27mm pocket test.

It’s Omar, from Omar Gonzalez Photography. He also got himself a Fujinon XF27mm for his Fujifilm X-T20, and he now shared his review on youtube here. But besides the little pocket test, Omar also makes a more comprehensive review with pixel peeping and so forth. So make sure to check it out here.

And in case you read this, Omar… I lost my lens cap too :).

If you own an X-T20 or X-E3, hence one of the more compact Fujifilm cameras, and want the ultimate compact and yet high performing combo, then the XF27mmF2.8 is the lens you need.

Fujifilm X-T2 Firmware Update 4.01 Released – Rollback to Previous Version. Fujifilm GFX, X-Pro2 and X-H1 Firmware Postponed

Fujifilm X-T2 Firmware Update

The latest major firmware update 4.00 for Fujifilm X-T2 has introduced quite some bugs, and evidently Fujifilm needs a bit more time to fix them all.

Hence, just half a second ago, Fujifilm released Fujifilm X-T2 firmware update 4.01, which basically re-uploads the older bug free firmare ver.3.00 (no slow motion, F-log & Co), as well a public apology (full press text below).

2 days ago we rumored that Fujifilm is working on a bug fix firmware update. Today’s rollback firmware confirms the rumor. Here are the bugs Fujifilm is working to solve:

  1. When RAW files, which were taken by X-T2 (before firmware ver.4.00), are converted in camera (ver.4.00) or by “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO”, they are not converted properly.
  2. When pressing the shutter button halfway under certain conditions, the live view can flicker.
  3. In rare cases, a hang-up can occur.

Thanks to Fujifilm for quickly delivering this transitional solution and we look forward to re-upload the bug-free Kaizen firmware soon.

These Two Huge Photography Vloggers Just Discovered Fujifilm, Got Infected by the X-Virus and Now Have Fun with Photography Again!

Discovering Fujifilm in 2018

Here on FujiRumors we talk about Fujifilm X and GFX gear every day since over 6 years now.

Those, who follow FujiRumors regularly, will also know in which direction Fujifilm is going, may it be the Fujifilm X-T3, the GFX 50R, the X-T100, the GFX 100S… and there is more to come… you definitely want to follow us also on Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter if you want to stay in the loop ;) .

So, in our eyes, talking about the Fujifilm X100F might seem old news.

But believe it or not, despite Fujifilm being every year more successful, X-shooters are still a relatively small niche in the photography world and many people don’t even know that Fujifilm makes highly sophisticated mirrorless cameras.

So today I’d like to highlight 2 huge youtubers (with well over a million subscribers), who recently stumbled upon the Fujifilm X system, more specifically the (now discounted) Fujifilm X100F.

The enthusiasm they show, when they talk about their “discovery” of the Fujifilm X system, reminds me a lot to my own excitement, when, after migrating from Canon to Sony, from Olympus to Panasonic, I finally discovered the Fuji X system.

I can without a doubt say that the X-system, although not perfect for everybody, was perfect for me. Why? Because I had so much fun shooting with it like never before. A fun that never stopped until today.

It’s No Coincidence

It’s no coincidence, that photographers, who have a long story with Canon or Nikon (like the two youtubers today), start their Fuji X adventure with an X100 line camera.

In fact, the X100F serves also this purpose.

It’s a compact, fixed lens, high quality and feature packed camera (hybrid viewfinder, build in ND-filters, film simulations and more), that is also ment to serve as a second camera for those photographers, who have already invested heavily into other systems, and do not want to buy into a completely new one.

So to speak, the Fujifilm X100F could be seen also as the “gateaway drug” into the X world.

CaNikon shooters get it as a small second camera for everyday use, start to have fun with it, enjoy the film simulations, the good old classic controls, get familiar with the X cameras, and at some point might be tempted to ditch their old system and switch to interchangeable Fujifilm X cameras… maybe a story that might sound familiar to some of you guys ;) .

Fujifilm X-T2 Kaizen Firmware 4.00 Officially Available… and This Makes NO Sense, FUJI! :)

Fujifilm X-T2 Firmware 4.00

Fujifilm just released the final and official Fujifilm X-T2 firmware ver. 4.00, and it brings new features such as focus bracketing, internal F-log, 120 fps slow motion and more, as well as improvements such as faster autofocus in low light.

Definitely one of Fujifilm’s notorious and much-loved Kaizen updates. So don’t wait any further and download your new X-T2 camera… for free.

No Eterna? Shoot F-Log and then use the Eterna LUT file, which is available for free.

Having problems to update your firmare? Then read Rico’s “Tips for Updating your Firmware“.

IT IS TIME to Follow & Like FujiRumors at Facebook, RSS-feed, Instagram, Youtube and Twitter

This makes No Sense, FUJI!!!!

Of course it makes no sense for Fujifilm to update the “old” X-T2 and bring it almost to the level of the brand new Fujifilm X-H1, since X-T2 owners will now have fewer reasons to upgrade to the X-H1.

Also, it makes no sense to massively improve a camera, the X-T2, that will be replaced very soon by the Fujifilm X-T3, which we have shared already many specs here on FR and will be announced shortly before photokina in September 2018.

Firmware updates are economically speaking a loss business for Fujifilm. They cost lots of money and extend life span of old products, which consequentially means people will keep their old gear longer and do not upgrade to the “latest and greatest“.

It happened to me, with the Fujifilm X-T1, that Fujifilm kept up improving so many times, that I simply sitcked with it, despite the X-T2, X-Pro2, X100F, X-T20 and all the other “better” cameras that followed… at least until the Fujifilm X-E3 came along… a temptation too big for me to resist.

So kudos to Fujifilm for consistently making the wrong thing and delivering us customers firmware updates. Many other companies simply force people to buy the newest camera to get the latest features (and make more money doing so).

In a world, where Apple released firmware updates that slowed down terribly my iPhone SE in order to force me to buy their latest model, it’s good to know that there is a company out there, Fujifilm, that actually thinks at customer support… and happiness… by improving their products over the years via free firmware updates.

TIPA Awards 2018: Fujifilm Left (Almost) Empty-Handed. Only Instax SQ10 Gets Awarded

In the last years, Fujifilm often won quite some of awards at the TIPA awards.

  • 2017: Fujifilm wins 5 awards
  • 2016: Fujifilm wins 3 awards
  • 2015: Fujifilm wins 3 awards
  • 2014: Fujifilm wins 2 awards
  • 2013: Fujfiilm wins 3 awards

Well, this year is the worst for Fujifilm, since the “X-series era“. They won 1 award only, and it goes to the Instax Square SQ10 for the “Best Design“.

So the Fujfiilm X-H1 and Fujifilm X-E3 were not good enought to make it into the TIPA ranking. Let’s hope the upcoming Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm GFX 50R will change it next year.

I am surprised, though, that not even one of the astonishing Fujinon lenses has made it into the list. For example, while the winner of the best mirrorless prime lens, the Samyang AF 35mm F2.8 FE, is surely a fine lens, I can’t see it being superior to the equivalent Fujinon GF 45mm F2.8.

So despite TIPA creating overall 40 categories, there is not much love for Fujifilm this year.
