LEAKED: This is the New Sensor of the Fujifilm GFX100 Successor

Finally we can share the final detail about the Fujifilm GFX100 successor sensor.

According to trusted sources, the Fujifilm GFX100 successor will sport a new 100 megapixel sensor based on the sensor architecture of the Sony A6700 and Sony FX30.

So still 100 megapixel BSI (not stacked), but optimized for faster sensor readout compared to the current 100MP sensor in use on the GFX100/S as well as in its APS-C format on the Fujifilm X-T3, X-T4, X-S20 etc.

We will have to see what benefit this sensor brings in real life, but on paper (and from what we can see on the Sony A6700), the faster sensor readout leads to less rolling shutter especially in video, allows for faster processing of files and potentially just speeds up the camera overall in terms of autofocus, EVF blackout and more.

The perfect solution to speed up the GFX system without going the super expensive stacked sensor route.

The WORST Thing About Fujifilm (and Other Brands) according to Chris & Jordan (PP)

In their latest episode, Chris and Jordan run over the worst things of every camera brand.

And after some nice praise for the Fujifilm system overall, they express their main complaint, which are:

  • Menu System needs imrpovements: for example, face detection and subject detection are separate items, slowing you down unnecessarily
  • Fujifilm cameras are more prone to write errors and bad surprises when using certain memory cards. To their credit, though, Fujifilm lists the compatible memory cards. But with other brands, they don’t experience as many issues when using non recommended memory cards

We told you yesterday that you should not expect the Fujifilm X100V replacement to come in 2023, hence it is not one of the two registered Fujifilm cameras (FF230001and FF230002).

Today we confirm it and we have received permission from sources to tell you this:

The Fujifilm X100V replacement will be announced in early 2024!

RUMOR: No Fujifilm X100V Successor in 2023 (X200, X100VI or X100W-hatever)

Everything is Possible (almost)

FujiRumors broke the rumors:

But we also know one more thing. Fujifilm two registrations filed so far: the Fujifilm FF230001 and FF230002.

Now, assuming that one of the two will be the Fujifilm GFX100 replacement, this leaves all possible options open for the second one.

Well, not really all options. I mean, I simply can’t see a Fujifilm X-H3 or Fujifilm X-H3s coming in September, as those cameras are hardly 1 year old (or less).  And also not the Fujifilm X-T6 or Fujifilm X-S30.

But other than that, we can hope for:

  • a Fujifilm X-T5s with 26MP stacked sensor of X-H2S
  • a Fujifilm X-Pro4 maybe with some curious solutions as many hope for example a monochrome sensor
  • a Fujifilm X-E5 which is not a dead line according to Fujifilm managers
  • the long awaited Fujifilm X-T40
  • the much wished Fujifilm X80 or Fujifilm XF20
  • the revival of Fuji’s entry level cameras with the Fujifilm X-T300, Fujifilm X-A8, Fujifilm X-A30 or Fujifilm X-M2
  • less likely in my opinion the Fujifilm GFX100S successor, Fujifilm GFX50R successor or Fujifilm GFX50SII successor, as I can’t see Fuji launching two GFX cameras on the same day (they never did that in the past, but never say never)

And in fact, I asked you to vote on which camera you’d like to get on September 12 and you can see the results here.

X100V successor is NOT possible

At this point you’ve noticed something: there is no Fujifilm X100V successor (X200, X100VI, X100 whatever it will be called) in the list.

Why?

Well, because despite being one of your top wished cameras (second only to another camera), and despite fake rumors already being shared about the X100V to come on September 12, I can now tell you with 110% certainty that there will not be any Fujifilm X100V replacement coming in 2023.

Trust me on this guys. No X100V successor in 2023.

I guess Fujifilm has no hurry at all to come out with a successor, given the fact, explained by Fujifilm managers, that if the world would stop to order X100V today, it would still take them 3 months to be able to ship all X100V orders placed until yesterday.

Seen from this perspective, the biggest problem of the Fujifilm X100VI (or whatever) is the terrific success of the X100V.

Fujifilm X Summit on September 12: What Camera are You Hoping for to Come? VOTE NOW

So, we just leaked the date of the next Fujifilm X Summit, which will happen on September 12.

Now I am curious to know what you guys are hoping for to come.

That’s why I have now launched a survey that includes plausible, less plausible and borderline impossible options.

I’ll not include 110% impossible cameras, which would be for example a Fujifilm X-H3 or Fujifilm X-H3s, as those cameras are hardly 1 year old (or less). Or the Fujifilm X-T6 or Fujifilm X-S30.

What we will inlcude are the Fujifilm X-T5s (X-T5 with 26MP stacked sensor of X-H2S), Fujifilm X-Pro4, Fujifilm X-E5, Fujifilm X-T40, Fujifilm X100V successor (X200, X100VI, X100 whatever), Fujifilm X80, Fujifilm XF20, Fujifilm X-T300, Fujifilm X-A8, Fujifilm X-A30, Fujifilm X-M2, Fujifilm GFX100 successor, Fujifilm GFX100S successor, Fujifilm GFX50R successor and Fujifilm GFX50SII successor.

I will give you two options to vote on, because Fujifilm has so far registered two yet to be released cameras.

Fujifilm X-H2 Teardown and Disassembly (for IR conversion): Solid, Uncompromising Construction optimized for Heat Dissipation

Fellow FR-reader Sven is specialized in IR and Astro conversions, and he recently did a fullspectrum conversion on his Fujifilm X-H2.

Here some excerpts regarding the teardown:

  • After a deep look under the hood, the design of this camera can be summarized as follows: Heat Management and Dissipation.
  • mainboard of the X-H2 reveals countless SMD components. With the amount of features packed into such a small camera, this is hardly surprising
  • the processor is covered with a heat conduction pad
  • The entire shutter mechanism is supported by small springs all around and has no direct contact with the body
  • this also explains why the camera’s shutter is relatively quiet and has this very special muted sound
  • The heat of the X-Trans V sensor is tapped directly on the back of the sensor via a delicate heat sink and conducted to a copper plate on the stainless steel chassis

As for the IR performance, they write:

  • Some modern sensors can show fine, mostly horizontal lines in the images. This is probably caused by PDAF pixels (“AF pixels”) on the sensor. These occur more often with strong IR filters and with very high-contrast processing. How does the X-H2 perform with an 830 nm infrared filter? With overly high-contrast processing, no lines or other artifacts are visible at 100% view (aside from noise, of course, induced by the high-contrast processing). The new sensor is a clear recommendation and can be used without restrictions.

As well as a firmware request:

  • Unfortunately, the X-H2 shares the same handicap as all X-Trans cameras. The manual white balance is always set without any problems, but the available range is not quite sufficient. […] Unfortunately, a warm magenta color cast remains in the camera and has to be corrected on the PC.
  • Fujifilm can actually do that, with their Bayer sensor cameras (X-A series and X-Txxx) it works without any problems
  • The X-H2 seems to work a bit better than the X-T3, but you can’t get rid of the color cast completely
  • In the unlikely event that a Fujifilm firmware designer reads this: Please expand the limits in both color axes in which manual white balance can be set. A little bit wider and the cameras internal white balance will work for infrared as well. Such a change can be distributed in a future firmware update in my eyes and should neither harm anyone nor cause too much work in programming.
