Fujifilm X100F Firmware Details Leaked… and Don’t Panic Regarding the Fujifilm X-T20 Firmware Update

2 days ago here on FujiRumors we broke the news, that 6 Fujifilm cameras will get a firmware update soon. Included in our list was also the Fujifilm X100F.

The day after, nokishita leaked the details of the updates, but the Fujifilm X100F was not included in the list.

Just now, though, nokishita updated the list with the X100F firmware. Here are the details of the update

X100F Firmware Ver.2.10 -due April, 2018
Enlarged and customizable indicators or information
The upgrade allows users to enlarge indicators and information in the viewfinder and/or LCD monitor. This upgrade will also enable users to customize the location of where the information is shown on the display.

The X100F firmware can be considered minor, especially compared to the other upcoming massive updates. But Fujifilm notoriously never covers the X100 line with lots of Kaizen love, even though it was the original X100 to start all the “Kaizen-buzz” back in the days.

But with the growing number of camera models, Fujifilm had to make decisions which cameras they can keep up covering with Kaizen love, and which one not… and the X100 line had to be sacrificed.

If you want to see what the firmware update details of the Fujifilm GFX 50S, X-E3, X-T2, X-Pro2 and X-H1, check out this post.

Also, I notice many X-T20 owners now panic, because the X-T20 is not mentioned in the list. But keep in mind these are only announcements of upcoming firmware updates. And the one for the X-T20 has already been announced (and it’s massive!). That’s why it is not included in the list.

The X-T20 firmware will come, according to Fujifilm, in early April… so it can’t be that long anymore ;)

Fantastic Feedback… How is it Possible?

We have reported several X-H1 bugs (which will be fixed soon via Firmware update) and some more negative X-H1 feedback. And yet, there are some, who simply have a fantastic camera. A good battery life, an incredible autofocus and more.

Looking at our great Fujifilm X-H1 facebook group, in many cases, the fix is as simple as that: get the settings right!

Reading the manual helps a lot (so you can stop panic’ing when your EVF/LCD suddenly stutters… you will discover it’s a power saving mode you can turn off ;) ).

But the manual does not tell the whole story.

There are a lot of tips and tricks to make the camera work best for your needs, that I highly recommend to read books like the ones of Rico Pfirstinger, who shares plenty of useful tips and tricks about the X100F, X-T20, X-T2, X-Pro2 as well as older cameras like the X-E2, X-T1, X-T10, X-E1 and X-Pro1.

Since the Fujifilm X-H1 shares many similar features, and carries all the X-DNA inside, it might be useful for you to maybe grab the X-T2 book, which will in large part also applicable to the Fujifilm X-H1.

With that said… let’s share today’s Fujifilm X-H1 roundup :)

Great Battery Life?

Some Fujifilm X-H1 users over at our Fujifilm X-H facebook group report surprisingly good battery life for the X-H1. For example, Miklos wirtes:

Many people complain about the battery performance of the x-h1. I use it mostly for sports. Here is my experience. With battery grip after shooting one soccer game in close to zero degrees centigrade the first battery in the grip at 64%. The other two still at 100%. 1300 shots taken. The camera and the grip are both in high performance or boost mode. Also, I do not review photos while I shoot sports. Do we need better battery performance than this??? In case someone is interested also to see the photos at miklosphoto

X-H1 for Weddings

Fujifilm X-H facebook member James use his Fujifilm X-H1 for his first wedding. I will share his impressions here, but in order to comment and interact with him, you better check out his facebook post in the group.

Shot my first 2018 wedding. Initial Thoughts on X-H1:

  • No bugs or issues. At all. Thankfully!
  • Highly Responsive.
  • Focus was very accurate in low light. Low light simply isn’t an issue.
  • ISO performance is amazing (I use 1.4 and 1.2 lenses so that helps a lot).
  • QUIET. I don’t think the bridal party knew I was taking any pictures lol
  • With the Godox trigger system and flashes, it tends to have a millisecond or so delay when clicking the shutter. Wasn’t too thrilled about that but it’s not a dealbreaker.
  • Shot close to 1000 raw photos until the battery was at 23% and I switched it then. Definitely can blow through a 32GB card at compressed raw file settings with one battery.
  • Noticed in broad daylight that the back LCD screen really needs to be brighter.

That’s all for now! I’m absolutely wiped! Lol

Fujifilm X-H1 Development Story #6 – Autofocus Unlimited

The 6th epsiode of the Fujifilm X-H1 development story is now online.

This time they explain us how the AF team at the R&D department was able to improve the autofocus even further and the secrets behind the new AF algorithm.

The focus point is divided into 5 blocks: top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right, and center. Some parts of the central block are overlapped with other 4 areas. The focus point is usually at the center, but not always. This division of focus points prevents the undesired font or rear focus and increases the AF accuracy.

The 5 blocks are then split into 4 lines. Each area are now split into even smaller pieces to further improve the AF accuracy. With this split, the algorithm, it can detect focus point on the subjects with flat texture.

Now, let’s count the number of phase detection pixels in the area. The area is divided into 5 block and then split into 4 lines. The total number of phase detection pixels is 20,000. 20,000÷5÷4=1,000. There are total of 1,000 phase detection pixels within the AF frame. 1,000 pixels provides enough information, but how is it used?

The information of the 1,000 pixels are measured in horizontal comparison, vertical comparison, and square comparison.

There are two types of phase detection pixels, A and B. With the horizontal comparison, the focus point is detected by measuring the difference between A and B pixels horizontally. The difference can also be measured vertically with the on sensor phase detection of X-H1. This is called the vertical comparison. And then the camera is capable of measuring the difference between all of pixels A and B in the given area. This is called the square comparison.

The three types of comparison are processed simultaneously for X-H1. Previously, it was in the order of square, vertical and then horizontal. “We discovered that simultaneous processing provides information with higher accuracy,” the AF team commented.

[…] Previously, autofocus with the phase detection was only possible up to +0.5EV, but it can now work at -1EV. The phase detection AF is supported up to the aperture of F11. Previously, it was only up to F8. This means that the autofocus is more robust to the high frequency subject.

The good thing is, that it is all software based, so we can hope for the new autofocus system also on the X-T2 and other X-Trans III cameras.

And keep in mind, the top speed of the AF remains the same.

Many X-Photographers who have tested the X-H1 commented that “the AF is faster”. But the fastest AF speed has not changed [as reported here]. What’s been changed is the area that Phase detection AF can cover. The new algorithm helped the photographers to accurately capture the scene that they wanted to capture.

Priolite Adds Radio Trigger Support for Fujifilm and Elinchrom “Working on Fujifilm Support”

Priolite Fujifilm Support

On Friday, the European studio strobe lighting company Priolite announced on their instagram here, that it is introducing a version of its RC-HS-F radio trigger for Fujifilm X-Pro2, X-T2 und GFX 50S cameras that will allow syncs at up to 1/8,000 of a second.

Priolite has just a small market share, but there are Fujifilm X shooter using their products, and who lookf forward to Priolite support, such as the FR-reader, who informed me about this news.

Elinchrom

Godox, Profoto, Nissin, Broncolor, Metz, Cactus, Priolite, Jinbei/Orlit, Conomark and more companies have already added Fujifilm support.

Anyone missing?

Oh right, Elinchrom! They don’t seem to be in a hurry to support Fujifilm.

As we reported here, Elinchrom should add Fujifilm support in 2018 according to a press release they made with Rotolight. But so far nothing has happened.

So I did search on their facebook page, and I have found the following Elinchrom statement, made last week: “We are working on it“.

Sooner or later….
