Fujifilm Patents Fujinon XF 300mmF2.8 OIS, XF 400mmF4 OIS, XF 600mmF6 OIS (APS-C) and Fujinon GF 300mmF2.8 OIS (Medium Format)

Do you remember when Fujifilm patented the Fujinon XF300mm f/4 and XF500mm f/5.6 a couple of years ago?

And despite my warnings telling you not to expect such lenses soon (if ever), there are still a good amount of people who believe these patents are a strong indication for that gear to come soon.

So I will never be tired to make disclaimers: in 99,999% of the cases those patents never see the light of the day in a real product.

In fact, in over a decade of covering patents here on FujiRumors, I have seen 1 patent out of hundreds become real… and that patent was actually found only after Fujifilm released that gear.

Does this mean that covering patents is useless?

Yes… if you see it from the point of view of gear to come in future. You better look at our rumors for that purpose.

Any yet, these patents are a nice way to let us discuss on what Fujifilm should do in future and if such lenses would be appreciated among the Fujifilm community.

So down below are one by one all the latest patents.

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your continued patronage of Fujifilm products.

Fujifilm Managers Interviews: About Competition and Alliances, Dreams of Modular and Fixed Lens GFX and More

There have been two interviews with Fujifilm managers, one in French (the more comprehensive one) and one in Japanese (short).

I will sum up both of them, but the Japanese one only because it involves Koji Matsumoto, the president of Fujifilm Imaging. It does not say much at all, but if we hear from his mouth that X-H2 and X-H2S are selling better than Fujifilm thought, than it has its value.

The French manager was definitely much more talkative and if you don’t speak French, our summary below will cover it all.

Fujifilm Designer Talks about GFX: “I would Love to Evolve the GFX50R Rangefinder Series” and More on GFX Series Development

Fujifilm design manager Mr. Masazumi Imai (the guy we are all very grateful to because he designed the original X100 – read the story of his inspiration here) gave an interview in Japanese to MapCamera.

As usual youtube struggles with live video translations, but down below you can find a summary in English of both videos as well as the videos themselves.

AstrHori to Launch a Tilt Shift Lens for Fujifilm GFX in 2022/2023

I have been informed that AstrHori will launch a tilt-shift lens for Fujifilm GFX. The timing could be (if all goes well) within 2022, but also 2023 is a possibility.

Fujifilm has already announced two tilt-shift lenses for 2023, the Fujinon GF110mmF5.6 Tilt Shift Macro  and the Fujinon GF30mmF5.6 Tilt Shift. In fact, B&H Photo has them already listed at their website:

Important Note Added by Fujifilm Regarding XF Lenses Supporting 40MP Sensor on X-H2 (and Fujifilm X-T5)

When Fujifilm launched the 40MP Fujifilm X-H2, they also published a list of lenses that get the maximum benefit from the new high resolution sensor.

This led quite some folks (also here on FujiRumors) to believe that the lenses not on the list will not profit at all from the increased resolution.

Some even said that because of this, they won’t upgrade to the 40MP Fujifilm X-H2 (and also the upcoming 40MP Fujifilm X-T5)

I did try to explain that you have to see in other terms: the new sensor will finally let all XF lenses express at their best in terms of resolution. it’s just those not on the list won’t go quite up all the way to 40MP.

Finally Fujifilm understood that the message they put out was potentially confusing and now added a note on their official Fujifilm X-H2 page:

*The list specifies our selection of lenses that have high resolution performance from edge to edge at maximum aperture, allowing you to fully experience all that the 40MP sensor has to offer. Lenses not listed will also allow you to experience the improved resolution performance of the 40MP sensor.”

So if you want 40MP resolution from edge to edge at maximum aperture, then only the lenses on the list will deliver (see list below). But Fujifilm now clearly says that lenses not listed will also deliver improved resolution performance when used on the 40MP sensor.

Hence, if you want more resolution, buying a Fujifilm X-H2 or the Fujifilm X-T5 will give you that also by using lenses that are not on the list.

And from how I read it, some might even resolve all the 40MP when stopped down at least in the center of the frame. Would be nice if Fujifilm would be even more specific on that.
