Venus Optics Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Lens for Fujifilm

Laowa finally announced the long rumored Laowa 9mmF2.8.

Venus Optics still did not discoles the price, however, we have rumored here, that it will cost $499 ex-VAT in USA.

BHphoto is selling Laowa lenses, and its great to know that soon also a Fujifilm version will join.

Laowa lenses are made by the Chinese manufacturer Venus Optics, but as already highlighted by TheCameraStoreTV in their Best/Worst 2017 epsiode, we see more and more quality products coming from China, and TCSTV specifically mentions Laowa lenses amongst those Chinese quality products.

One of the questions X shooters have at the moment, is how the ETERNA compares to other film simulations.

Keith did a quick comparison on his blog here. He says:

“what I see doesn’t surprise me coming to Eterna as it is a film simulation designed for videographers, aka – designed for further color grading and as such is characterized by subdued color presentations and rich shadow tones.“

Also, as Dan said at our Fujifilm X-H1 group here, “Eterna is muted for a reason. In video, you want the eye’s attention focused on the action/actors not drawn to the entire frame’s vista.”

And in today’s Cinema5D interview, Fujifilm Manager Jun Watanabe-san said: “Current film simulations, even Pro Neg, are too brilliant and not suitable for long time viewing. Hence we developed ETERNA.”

I have now had the Godox AD600 PRO in my hands for 48 hours, since posting my ‘first impressions’ review. What have I discovered since, and is it a substantially better flash than its predecessor, the AD600?

I used the brand-new Pro unit earlier today on a fashion shoot for Berlin-based fashion brand, Hadas Hinkis.

Since in my first round of clinical testing, I had already determined that one PRO has roughly the same output as the twin H1200, when paired with the legendary Broncolor Flooter S, I felt confident to bring only the PRO on set.

As expected, the PRO performed flawlessly during the entire shoot.

ETERNA Film Simulation Available in Lightroom for Fujifilm X-T2 & Co with a Little Hack

ETERNA for Fujifilm X-T2  & Co in LR

In the recent (and fantastic) TCSTV Fujifilm X-H1 live stream, Fuji Guy Billy said that ETERNA on Fujifilm X-T2 is very possible via firmware update in future, hence (almost) confirming our rumor of December 7 here.

But if you own the latest version of Lightroom, you can already now see how your X-TransIII files look with the ETERNA film simulation applied.

Follow these simple steps:

  • Download an EXIF Editor
  • Change the X-T2, X-Pro2, X-T20, X-E3 or X100F EXIF camera name of your image to “X-H1” using the EXIF Editor
  • Load your EXIF manipulated image in Lightroom Classic CC 7.2
  • ETERNA will be available in your Lightroom camera calibration menu
  • Smile :)

This “hack” is available already since a few days now, when Adobe added X-H1 support.

UPDATE: Added comparison Canon 5DMK IV with Canon EF 300mm F2.8L IS USM and Nikon D850 with Sigma 300mm F2.8 EX APO DG HSM. Of course the APS-C XF200mm has to be compared to the equivalent Full Frame 300mm glass, and not 200mm!

Today Fujifilm published their first episode of the “Fujifilm X-H1 Development Story“.

The article includes a technical sketch of the Fujinon XF200mmF2 R LM OIS WR mounted on the brand new Fujifilm X-H1.

I used the technical sketch provided by Fujifilm (and camerasize.com) to photoshop a size comparison of the XF200mmF2 against the other big Fujinon glass, the XF50-140 and the XF100-400.

Keep in mind that there could be changes, since the sketch shows the current estimated size of the XF200mmF2. We are still in pre-production phase, so the final lens might see some changes.

The article linked above also says the XF200mmF2 R LM OIS WR will weight more than 2kg and that in order to withstand the stress, the mount part of the Fujifilm X-H1 has reinforced ribs.

FR-reader Panther wonders if Fujifilm implies, that the mount of the X-T2 can’t handle that stress. I guess we will get more answers soon, when the XF200mmF2 will be announced (witihin 2018).
