Typo or Freudian slip? Workshop with the Fujifilm X-PRO2 in Cambodia (July/August with official X-photographer Damien)

 photo pro_zpsfbab788b.jpg

Sometime I like to link to workshops of X-shooters all around the world. Well, this time I was pretty surprised to read that Damien Lovegrove (official Fuji X-photographer and known also for testing products for FujiUK) is organizing one in Cambodia in July/August and that he will likely use a Fujifilm X-PRO2 and the Fujinon XF [shoplink 12888]14[/shoplink], [shoplink 16128]23[/shoplink], [shoplink 12889]35[/shoplink], [shoplink 21554]56[/shoplink] and [shoplink 12892]55-200[/shoplink] lenses.

Sure, it must be a typo. You will hardly see any X-PRO2 before Photokina in September, when it could be officially announced. I don’t think anyone is allowed to show an X-Pro2 before that event.

But is that “X-PRO2” in Damien’s workshop just a simple typo or a Freudian slip? Well, maybe Fuji X-photographer Damien just told us that the X-PRO2 will be compatible with the existing XF-lenses.

So, dear Damian, lemme know if you’ll use the X-PRO2 in your workshop. I have holidays in August and could join it ;-).

Thanks for the link, Kamal.

New Source: X-PRO2 will feature a Full Frame sensor. Initially 3 to 5 FF lenses!

 photo pro_zps2b6733fe.jpg

Les jeux sont faits! According to a new source Fujifilm decided to put a Full Frame sensor into the X-PRO2.

The source said that existing XF lenses won’t fit on on the new Full Frame X-PRO2. Therefore new FF Fujinon lenses will be offered (initially 3-5) and rest will be Leica lenses via a detachable mount.

Another anonymous source confirmed the rumor of yesterday saying that “the information you have on X-PRO1S being scrapped is correct. The X-PRO2 would be available around 6months after any X-PRO1S which is why it was stopped”.

Until now it’s all unconfirmed, so please take it with a tiny grain of salt.

stay tuned

No more X-PRO1S… all R&D placed into the X-PRO2!

 photo pro_zpsfd438901.jpg

Several months ago I told you that Fuji planed to launch an X-PRO1S first, and then follow with the X-PRO2 in 2015. Now, an anonymous source, told me that:

„no X-Pro1s on the horizon… all R&D [research and development] is being placed into X-Pro2 for 2015.“

Maybe, given the great success of the X-T1, Fuji decided to cut off plans for the X-PRO1S and let the X-T1 remain their top high-end X-series camera until the launch of the X-PRO2.

This rumor comes from an anonymous source, who gave itself a nickname, so that I can recognize it in future (thanks for this). It also shared rumors in the past. Some of the rumors are still unconfirmed and others (X-T1 price) were correct.

For now, take it with a tiny grain of salt.

And feel free to use the rumor box to contact me anonymously (feel free to use a nickname) or drop me an email at fujirumor [at] gmail.com.

Ok dear Fujifilm, we can live with it. We can wait until 2015 for the X-PRO2. We will wait because you promised us a “major breakthrough“. I still don’t know what this breakthrough will be, but I’m investigating.

As we know, there are 2 Fuji patents for new sensors: one is the organic sensor and the other is the one with the enlarged green pixels. Both could be an option for the X-PRO2… and of course, a full frame sensor.

So now it’s your turn, dear FR-readers. Which sensor you’d like to see in the X-PRO2. Feel free to vote the poll (and also to add new suggestions in the comments).

And in the meantime, Fuji, just give us XPRO1S with the X-TRANS version of Sony’s [shoplink 22210]Sony’s A6000[/shoplink] APS-C sensor, where phase-detect points cover 92% of the frame.

X-PRO2 announcement in 2014 available in 2015? Design & sensor not finalized as of yet!

 photo X_zpsd592314c.png

Hi all

Some people asked me via personal message on facebook, twitter and email, if they should go for the X-T1 or if the X-PRO2 will be available anytime soon.

I’ve already told you that it won’t come before late 2014, but more likely in 2015 here.

Also Mr.Kawahara and other Fuji Managers said that “there are no plans for an X-PRO1 replacement for now”, because they are waiting to achieve a “major breakthrough”. So it will be radically different to what it is now (organic sensor? Full Frame?).

That said, I’d like to share a rumor from an anonymous source who already told us some X-T1 specs that I think will be correct (price $1,300, 1 card slot, X-T1 + 18-135 in April/May for $1,800…). (Thanks a lot for sharing!)

This source said:

  • X-Pro2
  • Announcement in 2014
  • Available in 2015
  • Design & sensor not finalized as of yet.

So, it’s still a pretty long wait for the X-PRO2. But I’ll try to entertain you with some rumors in the meantime :-) .

The anonymous source contacted me via rumor box and gave itself a fake name, which allows me to recognize it in future. You can do the same if you want, or also create a fake email account and contact me.

Fuji Manager promises a total of about 20 lenses as soon as possible + no X-PRO2 for now

 photo 001_zps697ed93b.jpg

FR-reader Hallvard spotted an interview with Fujifilm’s Imaging Division Sales Department Manager at the Japanese site dc.watch (thanks, I’ve missed that one!). It’s dated December 17th.

It’s available google translated here. Hallvard was so kind to decipher it for us:

I stumbled upon an in-depth interview with two Fujifilm representatives on the japanese site DC Watch (dated December 17.) which may be of interest to your readers (and which I don’t think you’ve quoted yet?). It’s not easy to make sense of everything in the Google Japanese-English translation, but a few points can be extracted:

1) He confirms that Fujifilm has no plans for a X-Pro1 replacement at the present

[admin: he also says that the X-PRO2 will remain Fuji’s flagship, so it will be released once a major breakthrough is obtained… or in the words of google translator: “It was not the only model change this year only X-Pro1, but thought at the time (as a top model) is obtained major breakthrough, X-Pro1 and want to do the appropriate model change.”]

2) He promises at least a total of about 20 lenses “as soon as possible”.

[admin: as there are actually 10 lenses available, and two more in the pipeline (the 10-24 (specs&price) and 56), there should be about 8 more lenses. 5 are already rumored to come: 16-55mm 2.8, 50-140mm 2.8, 18-135mm 3.5-5.6, Large-diameter wide-angle lens, Super-telephoto lens 200mm or more. With these rumored lenses there is a total of 17 Fujinon lenses.]

3) He elaborates on the X philosophy quite a bit, and if I’m not too far off, Fujifilm are aiming to make an industry reference” for digital imaging, like Kodak did with the silver halide film, the unquantifiable “three-dimensional appearance and feeling of air”. He emphasizes the perceived image quality, tone and color reproduction, over measurable features like S/N ratio and resolution. And he observes that the number of people who have “a deeper understanding of the X-Series” is slowly increasing. He sits tight, committed to their product, not industry trends.

I’m guessing I’m not the only one who would have liked to read a proper translation of this interview. But anyhow, I hand it over to you. Please feel free to use it as you like.

[UDPATE] Here is another translation, shared via facebook by FR-reader Levels Of Detail:

– No expectation in the short term to update the x-pro1. It’s the flagship model, so they’ll continue to upgrade it through firmware updates. They expect to upgrade the flagship model when they can time it to deliver a major technological breakthrough.

– They see the latest features like wifi or miniaturization as competitive realities that they need to address, but fundamentally they view their strengths to be around image quality and color processing.

– They don’t think they’ll be done with the lenses until they’re at about 20 choices. They focus a lot on high quality glass, and they prioritize optically corrected lenses rather than software post-processing.

– A very interesting anecdote: they mention how the 35mm f/1.4 uses an essentially 100-year old 8-element design, which requires all elements to move when performing AF. They acknowledge that by changing the design, they could improve from 400ms to 200ms for AF time, but they choose to prioritize the IQ over the extra 200ms improvement.

A lot of what they talk about really jives with my impression of the X-E2. Great IQ, some really great color processing (I really like the B/W modes), but AF is not the highest pri.

In case you missed it, there is also a nice interview with Fuji manager Mr. Kawahara here.

X-E2 coming before X-PRO2? (new source)

I’ve received a rumor from a new source who told me that he already had the opportunity to see a working Fuji X-E2. If the new source is right, it could mean that Fuji is stepping on the gas and is planning to release the X-E2 earlier than expected.

Now, if it is true that Fuji is already testing the X-E2, then maybe it could be announced late 2013 / early 2014. But I’m working on reliable release dates (and specs) right now.

Well, it seems that we could see the X-E2 before the X-PRO2!

But please be careful with this information. Keep in mind that it does not come from trusted sources. It’s the first time I’ve received a rumor from this source and I can’t confirm it. So take it cum grano salis. I’m working with my trusted sources to check this rumor and will post an update once I have some news for you.

If there is somebody out there who could give me some more information about Fuji’s future cameras/lenses, do not hesitate to contact me via email at fujirumor@gmail.com or by using the rumor box to share your information absolutely anonymously. Feel free to contact me.

X-A1 and NEW CHEAPER LENSES on the way! + still to wait for the X-PRO2

I’m here again dear readers! I thought you could be interested in the latest rumors bubbling in the FR-kitchen.

A new source shared with me (and with you) the following informations:

1) THE STRATEGY: Fuji won’t replace frenetically its cameras after a short time. The company’s goal now is to extend its offer to new market segments. Therefore there will be new cameras targeting different customers. (a trusted source told me here that, after the X-A1, Fuji plans to release two more cameras this year)

2) THE X-PRO2: Because of this strategy the high end cameras won’t be replaced that soon. (so it seems that the X-PRO2 won’t be one of the two cameras released after the X-A1 this year.)

3) THE NEW LENSES: There will be new cheaper lenses after the 16-50 f/3.5. These lenses will be cheaper because they are slower, but the image quality will remain top-notch because inside all elements are made of quality glass.

4) THE CHEAP 55-200: We will soon have a cheaper 55-200 lens (or something very similar).

5) THE DOUBLE KIT: Fuji could offer the X-A1 with a double zoom kit lens (16-50 and cheap 55-200)

As always, take rumors from new sources with a grain of salt. I’ve already fired off some emails to trusted sources and as soon as I can confirm this rumor I’ll post an update.

And don’t be shy, if anyone else out there has some inside news to share, use the rumor box on the FR-website to share them anonymously (you can give yourself a fake name and create an identity so that I recognize you in future) or contact me via email at fujirumor@gmail.com.

may the focus be with you!

P.S: Oh, and if someone out there reports these rumors on other websites don’t be afraid to quote the source, I have nothing against it ;).

RUMOR UPDATE: X-PRO2 coming late 2013 early 2014

I promised you that I’d come back as soon as trusted sources told me more, so here I am.

According to these sources, that were right in the past, Fuji won’t launch the X-PRO2 before late 2013 early 2014. So now I can exclude with certainity that, as rumored first in this Nippon Magazin, the X-PRO2 will be available in June.

So, still time to give Fuji some advice about how we’d like the X-PRO2 to be. Just write your wish list in the comments. I got some suggestions via email.

1) flip screen
2) wifi
3) touch screen
4) Allow customisation of the Q menu
5) focus peaking (where you can choose colour)
6) environmental sealing (from the comments. keep up your suggestions)

Some of these suggestions (for the X100S) can be found over here at uservoice.com.

Feel free to extend this hardware and software improvements-list for the future X-PRO2 in the comments.

X-PRO2 with Dual Processor chip coming within a few months?

Image on top: The dual processor chip used by Canon cameras

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Please check the updated post here! The X-PRO2 won’t come before LATE 2013 EARLY 2014

I’ve received an email from a new source who shared with me an interesting rumor. According to the source the X-PRO1 will be replaced in a few months. The camera will have a newer viewfinder and a Dual Processor chip. I have been told the new Dual Processor eradicates jerkiness and lag in the EVF. And it of course makes the image processing even faster.

Reminder: A Nippon magazine rumored the X-PRO2 for June, the X-E2 for September and an X-M1 for this month (read here). But the source we have could not confirm this release period now. Hope I can tell you more soon. So stay tuned!

As you can see, there is a rumor-box now on FR. You can use it to share anonymously rumors. Please mark your message with an invented name or mark so that I can recognize you in future. That will help me to recognize trusted sources :)
