Fujifilm X-T2 Image Printed on Huge Billboard for Nike :: Fujinon XF 50mmF2 WR Vs. XF 56mmF1.2

Anyone who Questions X-T2 APS-C images…

… can’t do big prints?

In these days, where we are all stunned by the resolution of the Fujifilm GFX, Sean Marc Lee shows that the 24MP APS-C can already print big. In fact, he shoot an image for Nike with his X-T2 and it was printed on a huge billboard. He used the X-T2 w/ 35mm f2.2 1/125.

So yes, also APS-C Fuji’s can get the job done :) You can see the image at Marc’s instagram here. Also from the same campaign, check out in Chinese hypebeast.

Fujinon XF 50mm F2 WR Vs. XF 56mm F1.2

Jordan just shared his XF50mmF2 Vs. XF56mmF1.2 comparison at admiringlight here:

both are very good lenses. The 56mm f/1.2 is sharper at similar apertures over most of the frame, though the 50mm f/2 is a touch sharper at the edges at f/2. Bokeh is a fairly close race, and as both are quite sharp, and both have nice renderings, I’d consider the other factors when choosing between the two.”

X20 Award Nominated Image

Award nomination with Fuji X20: Dario Ayala was just nominated for a Canadian National Newspaper Award, the highest recognition for Canadian journalists and photojournalists, for an image that he made last summer using the Fuji X20 whose line, sadly, has been discontinued. The X system gets a lot of love, but this series was a bit overlooked during its existence. See the image on instagram here and link to the nomination here.

Fujifilm GFX
USA BHphoto, Adorama, AmazonUS

Fujifilm GFX facebook member C. shared the image above on the group. It shows a heavily overexposed image and what seems to be an insane highlight recovery capbility of the Fujifilm GFX 50s. This image was a great opportunity to clarify what happens inside the GFX:

X-guru Rico (also GFX facebook member), looking at the image above, explained here:

Sensor analysis shows us that the GFX stops writing gain into the RAW file beyond ISO 1600. So this ISO 6400 shot is actually a ISO 1600 shot that is 2 stops underexposed. So 2 stops of the “amazing highlight recovery” are fake. ;) Lightroom simply applied a virtual 2 stop gain on import, which is of course fully reversable. Basically shooting at ISO 6400 is like shooting with DR400% always on.

Nothing really new here, since all Fujifilm cameras with X-Trans I, X-Trans II and also the X-A1/2 and M1 worked exactly the same way. X-Trans III are different, they bake the gain into each RAW (except for ISO 51200, which is actually ISO 25600 with a 1 stop import gain).

To perform a proper test of sensor highlight recover potential, you have to expose a series of shots at base ISO 100, then try to recover and normalize each of them and see where you put your personal limit of acceptable quality.

it was always nice to have additional DR at high ISO with most EXR I and EXR II cameras. This feature is now back with the GFX, but sadly, Adobe LR/ACR fails to apply correct import amplification in most cases. Basically, everything except for ISO 100, 125, 160 and 200 is somewhat off, often by a larger margin than is acceptable. There’s also a white balance issue at higher ISO settings which affects pretty much all external RAW converters (RAWs from the in-camera converter are okay). Of course, I have documented all of this and sent it to Fujifilm, so maybe Adobe will improve GFX support in a few weeks/months with their next Lightroom update.”

Yesterday, GFX member Wei already pointed out over at the group here after the technical sensor measurements tests by Photons to Photos, that “you can’t push the sensitivity up by adopting an ISO higher than 1600. Your sensitivity stops there

Each transition is very soft in these colors that you give me in these intermediate tones. It gives a rich transition result.”

Fujifilm GFX Impressions: “Even if You are Used to High-End DSLRs, the GFX will Blow you Away” + GFX Vs. Sony A7rII Shadow Recovery

Fujifilm GFX

The Fujifilm GFX facebook group has just reached the 9,000 members, and as you can imagine, the buzz over there is an incredible joy to follow.

And of course the feedback about the GFX is massive. It’s a closed group, so only members can see the content. But I can share a a few tidbits here on FujiRumors for you.

Let’s start with Marven, who shared his experience at the group here (visible only to members, but full story and images below) after shooting with the Fujifilm GFX + 32-64 handheld with the wrong settings (medium size JPEG only):

“My first impressions of the Fujifilm GFX 50S? Holly sh*t!!!

Even if you are used to looking at detailed images from a high-end DSLR like my Canon 5DSR (which is an excellent camera in it’s own right), the GFX images will blow you away! It has enough detail and resolution for even the most discerning pixel peepers.

I wasn’t going to upload any of these images because I hadn’t really set-up the camera yet and in fact discovered later that ALL of the settings were not to my liking straight out of the case. On my way home with the camera I passed by this gorgeous field of flowers and just hopped out and started taking pictures without thinking much about the camera’s default factory settings. In this case, the files were medium rez JPEGs in the sRGB colorspace. If I had checked my settings properly, I probably would have opted to shoot RAW or at the very least SuperFine (Fujifilm’s highest resolution for JPEG images) in AdobeRGB colorspace. I might have even chosen the Velvia Film Simulation for these high contrast, vivid shots.

Which is why these images impress me so much; the camera wasn’t even set up to deliver it’s best performance and yet when I cropped in on the Bee in the frame, the details simply blew me away. You can clearly see the pollen accumulated on his underbelly as well as the fine detail in his wings. And one must keep in mind that it wasn’t like he was a willing subject, he was buzzing around from flower to flower with me chasing him trying to snap a shot.

Which brings me to my final point. THE IS A MEDIUM FORMAT CAMERA FOR CRIS SAKE! Yet is feels so light and so nimble that I actually felt compelled to spontaneously jump out and shoot with it as though it were a point-and-shoot. Anyone who has shot MF knows the size and weight restrictions that accompany something like a Phase One XF system. It’s simply a massive camera with massive lenses and there is just no way I would want to lung it around for anything other than the most critical jobs. But the GFX is so lightweight, it makes shooting with a MF camera (dare I say) fun!!! I can tell I’m really going to love shooting with this camera.”

GFX member Sung owns both, the Fujifilm GFX and the Sony A7rII, and he decided to compare both cameras’ shadow recovery capability. As usual, you can read it at the group here if you are a member and eventually interact with Sung.

Dynamic range comparison between GFX 50s and A7rII. GF 63mm at f2.8 on GFX and ZY Optics 50mm at f2.0 on a7rii. Each combination shot at ISO 100 with shutter speed adjusted to be 5 full stops below auto exposure level. Each imported straight into Lightroom at base setting with no sharpening or noise reduction. Exposure pushed 5 stops and shadows slider maxed out at 100. The GFX 50s looks to me about half a stop ahead of the a7rii. Color fidelity is also better on the GFX 50s. First 100% crops, then 4×3 jpegs are attached.”

Fujifilm GFX 100% crop of a 5 stops underexposed image and then +5 on exposure slider and +100% on shadow slider

Fujifilm GFX Vs. Hasselblad X1D User Mini Review: “Forget About the Cons, Run and Buy the GFX” :: Fuji Guys GFX Top Features Video

Fuji Guys GFX Top Features Video

The Fuji Guys just published the Fujifilm GFX Top Features Video. Check it out on youtube here.

Hasselblad X1D vs Fujifilm GFX

User Review by Ahmed G., shared at the Fujifilm GFX Facebook Group here.

NEW: For everything Fujifilm GFX related, I’ve just lauched the dedicated GFX facebook page: 100% GFX news and rumors 24×7.

Ahmad’s Instagram / FlickR

NOTE 1: Sorry about my English because it is not my native language
NOTE 2: The comparison shots have been taken different times and in not well controlled conditions. They should just give an idea of the details difference between lenses.

I have used Hasselblad X1D for one month and had problems with the body and also shutter of the 90mm lens. Now I am using Fujifilm GFX for sometime with the 3 current lenses.

Let me explain my user notes. I am not an expert or professional photographer, but i have used the best 35mm lenses in years like coastal optics, voigtlander apo lanthar,Zeiss otus line and leica apo lenses.

With 35mm format the quality mostly comes with the lenses. For example Leica M 240 doesn’t have a state of art sensor but when you use it with a 50mm Apo Summicron you get medium format like output as a system.B ut if you use it a less corrected lens you will get a moderate FF look and quality.

With medium format the quality is mostly related to sensor. Of course lenses are good as well but at least for these two brands new line up are not as refined as the lenses I wrote above. (maybe fuji 120mm macro is an exception). But when they combined with the sensor they shine.

So let’s compare Hasselblad with Fuji (still no raw??)

Hasselblad X1D

Cons:

  • Plastic parts are fragile for scratches.
  • Lenses are slow to get good subject separation
  • Battery capacity is low.
  • You can not have bokeh circles with the lenses. They look like honeycomb. Maybe because of the leaf shutter.
  • 45mm and 90mm both have focus shift.Especially at short distances.
  • Files are flat and not lifelike.Dimenson is not there at all.
  • Lcd has a low resolution.
  • Evf is not better than sony a7x series.
  • Slow start-up time like computer.
  • After too many shuts body becomes hot.
  • Strange shutter noise.Ahhrrr ???

Pros:

  • Leica M like body. Build quality and style are exceptional
  • Super easy menu. It is Apple like.
  • Very good ergonomics on buttons and grip.
  • Great AF accuracy. Great working AF light for low light works
  • Super easy to use.
  • Nearly shake free because of leaf shutter.
  • Superb use of Nikon ttl flashes and profoto b1 up to 1/2000 sec
  • Colors are real as you see with your own eyes when you use Phocus software.

Fujifilm GFX

Cons:

  • Ugly style and ergonomics. Play and delete buttons are so bad placed.
  • To much buttons and crowded menus.
  • The position of buttons really sucks(especially play, delete and ev +\- ) by default.Yes you can redesign them but not all. Delete can not be arranged for a different button and you can not reach it comfortably with your right hand when holding the grip. You have to use your lef hand. So button line up of default is con, to re-arrange them is a pro
  • Focus is fast but not accurate especially in low light.
  • Heavy after Leica bıt for dslr users it is ok. Especially lenses.
  • Because of bad ergonomics and the huge lenses(compared to Leica) it is impossible to use small bags for street and travel photography.

Pros:

  • Forget about the cons and run to buy it?
  • Punchy and lifelike files even no raw for now.63mm and 120mm has that special leica pop ??
  • Super subject separation.
  • Great shutter sound
  • Buttons are what you want them to be (the ability to re-arrange them)
  • Detail is more refined and corrected than Hasselblad (hassy sometimes seem like to much Photoshop sharpened)

They are both have Cons and Pros but GFX is more like a 3th generation product which has less problem and very ready to go a big photo trip. Hassy is like a prototype with problems and makes you thing to go to a photo trip with a back up camera system.

Fuji files are more life-like as film but Hassy is more clinical. Fuji is a great upgrade camera for APS-C and FF users but Hasselblad is a back up camera for real studio medium format users.

These Is what I feel about two of medium format cameras. Maybe some of you will feel different.

Bigheadtaco Interview with Fuji Guy Billy

Bigheadtaco had a 1 hour talk with Fuji Guy Billy. If you have no time at the moment to watch it all, I made a summary for you guys (you’re welcome ;) ). For the full video click here… but you should really check out the whole interesting interview as soon as you find some time.

Fujifilm X-T20/X100F/4K

  • X-T2 has huge demand [NOTE: we noted this… it’s still backordered at a lot of stores :( ]
  • X100F sensor is more power-hungry, hence they needed to put in the bigger NP-W126s batteries
  • the WCL/TCL MK II has magnets that allows the camera to detect if the WCL or TCL is attached. The old converters also work, but you have to select in the menu if the WCL or TCL is attached
  • 4K: to get close to the F-Log profile for color grading, dial down highlight + shadow tone to -2 and sharpness down to -4, it’s pretty close to the flat F-Log profile (for max. dynamic range recovery capability you still need F-Log)
  • 4K on X-T20 you lose some resolution, because it has no crop (X-T2 has crop) but has a half line skip (min 14:55)

Firmware Update for X-Pro2?

  • The half line skipping when shooting 4K allows the X-T20 to shoot 4K without overheating. Take asks Billy if this could be implemented to the X-Pro2 via Firmware update. Billy answers: “I hope so, it’s something I’m pushing all the time. I don’t understand why the X-Pro2 has no 4K like X-T20, since there is a solution for that. I’m fighting for that in Japan.
  • Personal Note: Thanks Billy for your efforts to support us and make pressure on Fujifilm… we all send you a virtual hug :)

Fujifilm GFX

  • 2.5 years ago Fujifilm sat down with some key Medium Format photographers, and started developing the G-system from their input.
  • increased tonality + 14 stops of dynamic range
  • Hopefull down the road Capture One will support GFX RAW’s
  • GFX will hit the market at the end of February
  • Fujifilm will launch a free tethering Software (Fujifilm X-acquire) that you can use also with X-T2 & X-T1 at the end of Febraury. (min 29.03)
  • When they talked about the focal plane shutters, Fuji Guy Billy says that they know which sensor technology will come in future, and that “certain technology won’t be needed anymore“, and hence they decided to make future-proof non-leaf shutter lenses. Billy already talked more clearly about the global shutter in the interview with Luminous Landscape
  • Expect to see much more adapters. Fujifilm is very open to speak with third-party manufactures.
  • All 3 lenses are amazing sharp from center to corner, even the zoom lens.
  • Mid 2017 2 more lenses will come: 110mmF2 and 23mmF4. End of 2017 will see the 45mmF2.8
  • Fujifilm changed some of the curves for Astia and Provia, because of the new sensor and its great dynamic range.
  • Focus Bracketing (min. 29:45)

Mixed Stuff

  • Future APS-C lenses: they look at the demand. MarkII version of existing lenses, but also longer primes for sports [I’m sure they saw our poll results :) ]
  • Fuji Guy Billy says he’s aware the WiFi app needs improvements, and he seems confident that it will come. Not sure if you will have to pay for it.
  • Fujifilm is Nr.1 brand in Thailand, especially because of women liking its skin tones.
