New Fujifilm Financial Results: Instax Declines, Mirrorless Suffers, Revenue Down 12.4% but Fujifilm GFX100 Sells Strong!

Fujifilm Fiscal Year Report

Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and others have already reported their financial results.

Most of them are devastating bad. Sony is doing best, even though even Sony has to record a -3,4% sale decrease.

And Fujifilm?

Well, Fujifilm now published their financial results for the this quarter (ends September 30, 2019) and the numbers are not good either*.

Fujifilm’s cashcow Instax keeps slowing down, and digital camera sales suffer strong. All this results in a revenue decrease for the imaging division of 12.4%.

But Fujifilm remains optimistic and says:

we will further enhance the sales by providing products with competitive advantages utilizing our unique technologies, and by running effective promotions to achieve a performance target.

The only camera Fujifilm mentions clearly positively, is the Fujifilm GFX100, which enjoyed “strong sales“. And that must be right, since 6 months after announcement, the camera is still hard to find on the market.

FujiRumors recommends:

Dear Fujifilm, do you know that plan not to release any Fujifilm X-H2 not even in 2020? Forget that! Give us the Fujifilm X-H2 now with Samsung/Fujifilm ISOCELL+ sensor technology, and you’ll see the numbers go positive again. And a Fujifilm X-T4 with IBIS could help, too! Hurry up!

* As it always leads to confusion, we remind fellow readers that the Japanese fiscal year 2020 is divided as follows:
   – 1st quarter: April to June 2019 (revenue down 15%)
   – 2nd quarter: July to September 2019 (revenue down 12.4%)
   – 3rd quarter: October to December 2019 (to be determined)
   – 4rd quarter: January to March 2020 (to be determined)

Fujifilm’s Classic Negative Film Simulation Coming via Firmware Update to X-T3, GFX100 and X-T30

Classic Negative

As FujiRumors already told you here, along with the Fujifilm X-Pro3 on October 23, Fujifilm will also launch the new Classic Negative film simulation.

Classic Negative has a lovely nostalgic and vintage touch to it (see images below).

The good news I hear from sources:

  • Fujifilm will upgrade X Processor 4 cameras (Fujifilm X-T3, X-T30 and GFX100) with Classic Negative film simulation

Sadly (if the rumor is correct), my lovely little X-E3 won’t get it.

RUMOR: New Film Simulation Coming with Fujifilm X-Pro3… and to Fujifilm X-T3, X-T30 and GFX100 via Firmware Update?

Fujifilm X-Pro3

The Fujifilm X-Pro3 will come with a new film simulation.

I think this rumor will not only make future Fujifilm X-Pro3 owners happy, but also owners of Fujifilm X-T3, X-T30, GFX100, since those cameras share the same X Processor 4 and this could mean Fujifilm can update those cameras with this new film simulation.

TO BE CLEAR: I have no rumors that Fujifilm will update all X Processor 4 cameras with this new film simulation.

Recently Elia Locardi met Minami-San, Fujifilm’s color guru for the last 50 years. Minami-San developed the original Fujifilm film colors and is now responsible for the film simulation development. You can read the whole story here.

There is Hope: Fujifilm GFX100 in Stock in UK and German Store Expect Stock on September 12

The Fujifilm is now in stock at WexUK and CalumetDE expects stock on September 12.

Let’s hope this is a sign, that the Fujifilm GFX100 shortage will soon be over. I understand the unexpected high demand (my sources say 3 times higher than Fujiflm expected, Fujifilm managers officially said “more than 2 times higher orders than expected”).

But almost 4 months of waiting are long enough. Now please, just ship that beast!

Fujifilm Manager and Kevin Raber talk GFX100: “No Dials Improve Weather Sealing”

Kevin Raber, former publisher of Luminous-Landscape, is now back with his old team and they have started photoPXL.

In this episode, you can see Fujifilm manager Mike Bolbenko giving an overview on the Fujifilm GFX100.

I’ll skip things (specs) that I believe you all know already, and sum up below a few other points:

  • the term “medium format” is a film concept
  • in digital terms the current GFX sensor is better called “large format”
  • Fujifilm removed all the dials on the Fujifilm GFX100 because:
    – main reason for dial removal is that it improves weather sealing
    – about 50% of the users are going to shoot tethered
  • 16 bit makes files allows for more push/pull or color shifts
  • with flash, use mechanical shutter
  • electronic shutter for shooting fast and shallow DOF on brights sunny day
  • electronic shutter is silent. The company that made sound blimps, went bankrupt last year
  • electronic front curtain minimizes the shutter shake
  • max IBIS is 5.5 stops. With third party lenses you get up to 5
  • Kevin Raber recommends to keep IBIS on even when working on a tripod
  • Kevin Raber says Fuji stands behind customers, when it comes to repair (shutter lock on GFX100) and also firmware updates
  • Fujifilm can’t give film simulations color science to third parties. So, for people who want perfect match, they can use the free Fujifilm X RAW Studio software

Photons to Photos: Fujiflm GFX100 vs Sony a7rIV Dynamic Range and Other FULL FRAME Compared

Photons to Photos added the Sony a7rIV to their database, and you can now compare it to all other cameras, including the Fujifilm GFX100.

The new Sony a7rIV performs slightly worse at high ISO, but that’s not surprising, giving the higher resolution.

I decided to compare the Fujifilm GFX100 with the following full frame cameras: Sony a7rIV, Nikon Z7, Panasonic S1R, Sony A7rIII and Canon EOS R.

You can manipulate the chart here.
