Xiaomi Teases 108 Megapixel Smartphone with Fujifilm/Samsung ISOCELL Sensor Technology – Cancel Your Fujifilm GFX100 Order? :)

Xiaomi, world’s 4th largest smartphone manufacturer (as well as my weapon of choice to clean my appartment), has teased a 108 megapixel smartphone with ISOCELL technology on their twitter page.

There are currently not many details about this new sensor, but we know it will be an ISOCELL Samsung sensor, which, as we already reported, involves also Fujifilm.

In fact, Fujifilm delivers a special material that allows it to remove the metal barrier between pixels, making the ISOCELL sensor more light sensitive, color accurate, minimizing light reflections and more.

You can read the latest update regarding the Fujifilm / Samsung ISOCELL sensor in this article.

So here we are, a 108 megapixel smartphone! Anyone going to cancel his Fujifilm GFX100 order for this? ;)

Oh, btw, DPReview just said the Fujifilm GFX100 outperforms full frame and it’s the camera with best image quality they ever tested.

Fujifilm FY2020/3 Q1 Financial Results: Strong GFX100 and X-T30 Sales, but Severe Market Conditions Make Revenue Fall 15%

Fujifilm Financial Results

Fujifilm just published the results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2020 (April 1, 2019 – March 31, 2020).

Despite “strong sales” for Fujifilm GFX100 and X-T30, consolidated revenue was down 15.1% from the same period of the previous fiscal year.

Even Fujifilm’s cashcow Instax struggled this time.

DPReview Fujifilm GFX100 Review: “Image Quality? Sensational! The Best We Have Ever Reviewed. Outperforms FULL FRAME”

Fujifilm GFX100

DPReview published their full Fujifilm GFX100 review.

It’s not a perfect camera, but from the image quality point of view, it is simply the best camera DPReview has ever tested.

Senior editor Barney Britton says:

The GFX 100 is the first medium format camera I’ve ever used – film or digital – which doesn’t feel like a compromise. In almost all respects, the GFX 100 handles like a professional DSLR, but with all of the benefits of mirrorless, plus excellent 4K video capabilities and the unimpeachable image quality offered by a cutting-edge sensor. It’s not perfect, and it’s not cheap, but if I was a working professional photographer I’d buy a GFX 100 in a heartbeat.

Compared to other high resolution cameras:

Having said that the GFX 100 significantly outperforms full frame cameras, we should still consider the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R, since it’s able to shoot and combine multiple shots in order to offer resolution and light capture (and hence tonal quality) comparable to a larger sensor. But, while it does so in a smaller, lighter body and doesn’t have any phase detection elements to limit its usable dynamic range, its multi-shot mode only gets its best results when tripod-mounted, and applied to static subjects (and its use of electronic shutter limits its use with strobes). For most high-res applications, the GFX is the simpler, stronger, and yes, more expensive option. […]

If you need the quality it brings, the Phase One will outperform the Fujifilm, but if you can put up with the (sensational) image quality of the Fujifilm, then its smaller size, image stabilization, increased battery life, attractive JPEGs and video capabilities make it a much more flexible tool for considerably less money.

What we like What we don’t
  • Stunning images in terms of both resolution and tonal quality
  • Image stabilization makes it easier to get full benefit of 100MP resolution
  • GF lenses live up to the resolution demands
  • Autofocus is swift and accurate by medium format standards
  • Impressive video quality and specifications
  • Viewfinder is highly detailed and compatible with existing tilt/articulation accessory
  • Twin batteries give solid ‘in the field’ endurance
  • Chargeable/operable over USB
  • Control dials feel small and cheap
  • Autofocus performance isn’t impressive compared to smaller format cameras
  • Portrait orientation grip is slim and slippery
  • Portrait orientation controls don’t mimic normal orientation layout
  • On-sensor AF causes banding, slightly limiting usable dynamic range
  • We found it hard to find a dial setup that worked smoothly

Fujifilm USA offers 2 Year Warranty on Fujifilm GFX100 Affected by Vertical Grip Control Lock Issue

Fellow Fujifilm GFX100 shooter Marcello informed us at our Fujifilm GFX facebook group here, that Fujifilm USA is offering 2 years warranty on those Fujifilm GFX100 affected by the vertical grip control lock issue.

Marcello writes:

I got my GFX 100 yesterday, super excited, loving the ergonomics of the body. I don’t think it’s to big, honestly feels great in my hand. Unfortunately it’s in the range of affected cameras so I will be sending it in to Fuji to get fixed. I spoke to Steve today at Fuji who is always awesome and said on top of a fast turn around time 2 days we receive a 2 year warranty.

He also said it can be sent in anytime within the first year! Which is good because I am shooting a one of a kind custom car on Monday.

I love Fuji service and the care they have for their customers.

The service is at no extra charge, of course. So if your GFX100 is affected, you get 2 years warranty.

Make sure to check out the serial number of your GFX100 to see if yours is included in this service.

DPRTV Fujifilm GFX100 Review for Video: No Dynamic Range/Low Light Benefits Over X-T3, but MF can Now do Pro Video Work

Fujifilm GFX100

While 99,99% of Fujifilm GFX100 owners will buy the camera for its photographic virtues (the new king of the DPReview lab tests), at the GFX100 launch Fujifilm also highlighted the video capabilities of the latest medium format GFX camera.

And sure, on paper, also the Fujifilm GFX100 video specs are impressive (10 bit internal, 400 mbps, no crop 4K, IBIS etc).

But how does it work in real life for video?

DPReview TV has tested the Fujifilm GFX100 for videos, and here are their findings:

Fujifilm GFX100: Stupid Resolution, Unforgiving Camera, Recovery Potential, Overheating and More

GFX100 Shadow Recovery

Piet Van den Eynde has tested how far can you take a Fujifilm GFX100 file in postproduction. You can check it out in the video above.

GFX100 Overheats?

GFX 100 overheats says Jack:

I received a strange message, “Turn off the camera, and turn it back on.” I tried that several times, and I kept receiving the same message. I took the batteries out, reloaded them, and tried again. Same message. I tried a second set of batteries. Same message.

I figured it must be the heat. At this point, I had taken 97 photographs in single-shot mode over a 90-minute period. No video.”

Potential cause (and solution)

Stupid Resolution & Unforgiving Camera

digitalcameraworld woners: is 100MP just stupid? In their Fujifilm GFX100 review they write:

Unfortunately (for us), the GFX 100 has a higher resolving power even than our test chart, which maxes out at 4,000 line widths/picture height! This is normally plenty for even the best digital cameras, but not this time. […]

The GFX 100 can capture extraordinary levels of detail, but your technique has to be absolutely perfect. In our tests, we could often see differences between two examples of the same shot taken at the same time. We’re not talking about ‘marginal’ handheld shutter speeds here. Even at two or more times the usual ‘safe’ shutter speed, we saw variations. That’s not because there’s anything wrong with the camera. It’s because its resolution is so high that it will reveal even the slightest camera movement or focus shift, where both might be completely invisible on a lower-resolution camera. […]

The GFX 100 is an unforgiving camera. It will magnify your resolution, but it will also magnify your errors […]

Nevertheless, the GFX 100 is proof that megapixels still matter (as long as the sensor is big enough).
