Leaving Phase One for Fujifilm GFX100, Hasselblad X1D II vs Fujifilm GFX50R Budget Medium Format Comparison & More

I was once on my Dolomites, when I met a professional landscape photographer, who had a rented Phase One (I posted it on my Instagram here).

We had a brief talk before my hike continued, and I just told him that he should enjoy his Phase One, as this might be one of his last trips with it. A few months from now Fujifilm might drop something that will finally allow him to actually own a 100 megapixel camera.

Now, I don’t know how the story ended. Did he get the Fujifilm GFX100? Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did.

For sure, some did, as you can see from the video down below, where a photographer left Phase One for Fujifilm GFX100. And for good reasons: much lighter, much more compact, much cheaper, much faster, much more versatile, still that medium format look and more.

And if the GFX100 is still a bit too high in price, for about 1/3 of the price, you get 1/2 of the megapixel with the Fujifilm GFX50R.

Fujifilm is slowly but surely building up an impressive and absolutely future proof system. A system, that, I am sure, will gain lots of followers in the years to come.

The Impossible Specs Comparison: Canon EOS R5 vs Canon EOS R6 vs Fujifilm X-T4 vs Fujifilm GFX100 vs Sony A7rIV vs GFX50S

Well, it’s hard to compare Fujifilm flagship cameras to anything else, for the simple reason, that Fujifilm decided to stay out of the full frame war, and focus on the advantages that other formats like APS-C and Medium Format offer.

So, inevitably, every comparison can be called “unfair”.

For example, B&H Explora said in their dedicated Canon EOS R5 comparison article, that:

there are plenty of real advantages to medium format, which is why we aren’t daring to make a comparison with the Fujiflm GFX100, but sticking with the Fujifilm GFX 50S here.

But has that ever stopped us from making unfair comparisons? I don’t think so.

So, while waiting for the first real life reviews to hit the web, and hence the first real life comparisons, down below you can find a nude and crude specs comparison between the Fujifilm X-T4, Fujifilm GFX100, Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6.

Fujifilm Spirit Level Patent for Fujifilm GFX100 and other Top LCD cameras such as Fujifilm X-H1 and X-H2?

As we reported already in the past, Fujifilm is very active when it comes to patents about new ergonomic solutions:

The one below is just another one of those :).

It clearly shows a Fujfiilm GFX100, hence it might eventually find its way into the Fujifilm GFX100 via firmware update and to other cameras with top LCD, such as the Fujifilm X-H1 and Fujifilm X-H2.

Here is the description of the patent by the Japanese site dclife (google translated):

The design for displaying the electronic level on the Fujifilm camera top sub-monitor has been registered with the Japan Patent Office. I don’t follow patent related information very much in life, but I was interested in it personally, so I would like to pick it up. FUJIFILM will apply for the design on May 22, 2019, and will be the design registration 1657892 issued on April 1, 2020.

Taking “GFX100” as an example, the top sub-monitor of “GFX100” supports INFO display, dial display, and histogram. Perhaps future products may support the electronic level display. I am also worried about the contents that can be supported by firmware update.

Personally, I use the sub-monitor on the top only for tripod shooting and night shooting, but I think it would be useful to increase the user’s usage by switching the display. Perhaps it may come in handy when shooting on a tripod or low angle.

Fujifilm GFX100 will Get Free ProRes RAW via Firmware Update Soon and Unclear if X-T4 will Get it Too

We received report (thanks), that Fujifilm will soon release a free firmware update for Fujifilm GFX100, which will add ProRes RAW capabilities to Fujifilm GFX100.

ProRes RAW is a new codec released by Apple, that allows for much smaller video file sizes than before, while retaining the higher quality video data rates and editing capabilities, of the original Uncompressed RAW video.

If the Fujifilm X-T4 will get it too, it’s still unclear. But we know, those things are always harder to achieve with X Trans sensors (such as pixel shift, too, for example).

Speaking of pixel shift, that’s also to come with a firmware update on Fujifilm GFX100, but I am not sure when this will happen. Fujifilm is still working full power on it. It will be released, only when ready.

Looks like the Fujifilm GFX100 will be covered with lots of Kaizen firmware love!

Camera GP Japan 2020 Awards: Sony Wins Big and Fujifilm GFX100 Grabs the Editors Award

The Fujifilm GFX100 won the Camera GP Japan 2020 Editors Award, said to be the most prestigious camera award in Japan.

Now, I don’t know much about this specific award, but overall I wrote an article in the past about the dubious meaningfulness of such awards. But hey, better to win something than not to win.

It is totally subjective, but personally I rejoice much more when other awards are won, for example when photographers using Fujifilm cameras win hands down at the 2020 Word Press Photo awards.

Think at this:

None of the Fujifilm X shooters creaming off all the top awards at the World Press Photo 2020 used the most powerful camera on the market: an X-Pro2, an X100F, an X-H1 and others. But each of these cameras has its character, its peculiar look and feel, build ergonomically around the different needs of different photographers, and hence the tool many chose, to go out and grab award winning images.

Personally I also prefer to use a camera that fits my shooting style, rather than one with the power of a playstation, as I know I will get better results out of the first one.

This is also the reason, why the Fujifilm GFX100 made me salivate on specs level, but personally (as a guy, who does not make a penny out of his photography) I would not buy one, at least not until it looks like this Fujifilm GFX concept.

When I picked up the Fujifilm GFX100 and tested it, it was the first Fujifilm camera I ever hold in my hands, that I had to spend time just to figure out how to operate it.

You know what I mean?

I mean, give me an X-Pro2, X100V or X-T4, and thanks to their intuitive layout and manual controls, I can shoot right away, without any need of a manual or even setting up anything at the menu.

Specs are nice and good. But esthetics, ergonomics, feel and usability are more inspiring for me than mere specs, and therefore help me to keep my passion, fun and inspiration for photography high and fresh.

With that said, here you get it: the list of Camera JP Japan 2020 winners.

The big winner is Sony.

DPRTV Reviews Fujinon GF45-100mm F4 on Fujifilm GFX100

DPReview TV has published their Fujifilm GF 45-100mm F4 OIS review. Here is what they think about it:

  • basic general purpose everyday professional lens
  • it’s rugged and has OIS
  • it’s like a 35-80mm on full frame
  • Chris would like something wider
  • for landscape he prefers the GF32-64mm
  • the 35-80mm full frame rage however gets into portraiture territory, too
  • but overall there is a lot of crossover between the GF32-64mm and the GF45-100
  • what Fujifilm needs to release is something that goes from 20 to 35mm in full frame terms
[NOTE: FujiRumors leaked an old internal GF lens roadmap, and it showed a GF 20-36mm F3.5-4.5, which would be a 16-30 in full frame]
  • at 100mm he can handhold shots at about 1/30 of a second and still get very good and usable resolution. That’s very impressive
  • build quality feels excellent. Well build high quality lens. The weight is acceptable
  • excellent in containing chromatic aberration. No real chromatic aberration even in high contrast scenes
  • great job in controlling flair issue
  • optically a fantastic lens
  • sunstars are OK, but not great. But that’s classic for zooms
  • bokeh exhibits a little bit of onion rings, maybe a bit harder on the edges of the bokeh balls. Not as much cats eye in the corners wide open as he would have thought he’d get, and completely goes away if stopped down a bit
  • he shot handheld with the Fujifilm GFX100 IBIS, and he got very usable resutls at 1/15 of a second. So Chris is impressed
  • this lens would be awesome also for the Fujifilm GFX50R. It has OIS, and makes it a great walk around lens
  • has linear motor and focus incredibly fast paired with Fujifilm GFX100
  • easily delivers the sharpness you need even on 100 megapixel body
  • very consistent and high sharpness
  • in video, there is a fair amount of focus breathing. But besides breathing, it’s a nice lens for video
  • Chris says it’s still not the most versatile lens for him. He can’t rely just on this lens. He feels he has to take with him some other lens too, like the excellent 23mm prime lens or the 32-64 zoom
  • if you go with larger format zooms, this is a compromise you need to do. You can’t get same focal range easily like you get on a smaller sensor
  • depth of field equivalent of a f/3.2 on full frame. Gives you a lot of nice soft background
  • fantastic general purpose zoom

Fujifilm GFX100 Back in Stock… with Stellar Review Ratings!

The Fujifilm GFX100 is a big success.

According to our information, just at launch, the demand was triple the (already optimistic) forecast by Fujifilm. Managers later on officially said sales are more than twice what they expected.

As a consequence, it took a long time to finally ship it, and until just recently it was not always easy to find in stock.

Now the next batch shipped from Japan, and you can find the Fujifilm GFX100 in stock again at B&H Photo, AmazonUS, Adorama and Focuscamera.

The customer reviews are excellent so far:

If you can afford it, this camera will make you very happy for sure in terms of image quality. Another topic is the ergnomic layout. Personally I wish it would have more of that retro feeling. But that’s niche, so Fujifilm wanted to go more DSLR style mainstream with this body.
