Fujifilm 2021: Is This Really All? Or How Much New Gear We Could Get in 2021 Looking at Fujifilm’s Past Camera & Lens Releases

Fujifilm 2021 – Is This Really All?

Every week I get many emails from fellow FR-readers, asking me if this is really all.

They look at the current X mount roadmap and the latest G mount roadmap, and they see only 3 lenses in total. That’s meager.

Then they look at our rumors, see that we rumored only two cameras, the Fujifilm GFX100S and the Fujifilm X-E4 and wonder if that’s all for 2021.

I diligently reply to all of them, but it has become quite time consuming. So let me address this question one final time here on FujiRumors, so that in future I can just copy and paste the link to this article and send it to those, who inevitably will make me the same question again.

How Many Cameras Could we Get?

DPReview 2020 Gear Awards: Canon Dethrones Sony, Fujifilm X-S10 Triumph but did they Forget the GFX Lenses?

Best Gear 2020

DPReview awarded the best gear of 2020.

Lots of what they say makes sense, but I don’t really agree with everything. For example, the Fujifilm X-T4 is second in the mid-range ranking behind the Canon R6, which costs $800 more. For me, the Fujifilm X-T4 is so much better value for money.

Worth to notice, Canon grabs some of the most prestigious top spots, which in the past were usually in solid Sony hands.

And to me totally unsurprising: the little and affordable Fujifilm X-S10 is not only the best entry level camera, but it also grabs the second spot as overall top product 2020.

I am saying it since I’ve shared the first rumors: Fujifilm is doing lots of things right with the X-S10. If you don’t need weather sealing or 2 SD card slots, it’s by far the best value for money camera you can buy.

Last but not least the glorious Fujifilm X100V, frankly without any competition in the fixed lens compact camera segment.

What I do not get is the lack of any GFX lens. Not only the Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 or Fujinon GF45-100mmF/4 have not been awarded, but they did not even enter the shortlist of candidates.

In my opinion the GF lenses would have highly deserved a top spot. But I guess the GFX system is not really on DPR’s radar due to rather limited market share, and it’s easier to award gear that is also a big hit at the box office.

Let’s go through the list.

Fujifilm X-T200 Discontinued After Just 9 Months at Some Stores – is This The End of Fujifilm’s Entry Level Line?

Fujifilm X-T200 Discontinued

The Fujifilm X-T200 was announced on January 23, 2020 and started shipping in February 2020.

Now, just about 9 month after its release, some stores marked it as discontinued (see image above for example – google translated)

To my knowledge, this is not happening because an X-T300 is on the way (at least I have not heard about it). The reason is probably very simple: it did not sell well at all.

The Fujifilm X-T200 is a very fine camera for its price, but it failed in its purpose: attack the best selling camera in this price segment, the rather old and yet still strong selling Sony A6000, which was released in 2014 and is still in top selling raking at AmazonUS (currently 22th).

In the entry level segment, the Sony A6*** line is apparently unbeatable, and Fujifilm was not able to break through with excellent products like the Fujifilm X-T200 or even the X-A7.

That’s unfortunate.

The Unbeatable Sony A6000

But what could be the reason for the failure of the X-T200 and the ongoing success of the Sony A6000?

Well, in part it could be quite simple: people in the market for such a camera are usually not big photography enthusiasts and have not a huge photographic culture. They mostly just buy a camera because they want to have something that takes better pictures than their smartphones.

Those people know the Sony brand very well from their TV’s, their PlayStation’s and other electronic products that they use in their daily lives already. It’s a brand they know and associate with quality electronic products, and they therefore grab a Sony A6*** rather than a Fujifilm, which is for them a rather unknown brand they can’t relate to at all.

The Future for Fuji’s Entry Leve Line

Is this the end of the entry level line-up of Fujifilm?

Well, as we discussed in an earlier article, that shows Fujifilm’s own 2020 Fujifilm camera range pyramid, I believe that sooner rather than later the whole entry level line of Fujifilm will be dropped. It’s not a rumor, to be clear, but just my evaluation after seeing how this segment has developed over the last few years.

The only entry level line that did sell strong for a while, was the X-A line. But it looks like also that one is suffering, forcing Fujifilm to discontinue the X-A7 just 11 months after its release.

I am very pessimistic about Fuji’s entry level line, which, as we also told you already back in 2017 here, is no longer developed by Fujifilm anymore, but by the Xacti corporation. This means that already in 2017 Fujifilm struggled to justify that line any longer, and outsourcing its development was a last move to try to safe the line.

With the Fujifilm X-T200 and X-A7 failing to meet their sales targets, I am just becoming even more pessimistic about the future of those lines.

It’s a pity, I have personally recommended the X-T200 to a few of my friends, and they are all happy with it. But the market is not rewarding the best cameras for the reasons we told you above.

DPRTV Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 Review: “Impressively Sharp, Who Needs a Wildlife Lens Anymore ;). Totally Recommended, Except for One Thing…”

DPReview TV has now published their Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 hands on review, which was filmed with a GF30mm F/3.5 mounted on a Fujifilm GFX100.

The lens is another winner, and can easily keep up with the 100 megapixel of the Fujinon GFX100.

At some point of the video, he took a video of the forest, with a deer far away in the distance, and then cropped in and says “who needs a wildlife lens anymore“. Of course he said it as a joke, and the GF30mmF3.5 can’t replace a proper wildlife lens, but it was also a statement made to underline that with the combination GFX100 and GF30mmF3.5 you are in photographic crop-heaven.

The biggest problem with the GF30mmF3.5? Well, there is the GF32-64mmF4 (compare both lenses specs & price here).

You can find the video above and summary of the video down below:

  • 24mm full frame equivalent
  • is surprises how compact it is: just over 500g
  • 58mm filter thread
  • very chunky aperture ring and two-step phase between aperture ring and focus ring means you are not going to confuse where your fingers are
  • a very nice tactile experience
  • basically no real chromatic aberration and longitudinal chromatic aberration
  • about 32 cm minimum focus distance, hence you can get fairly close to objects and with that 3.5 aperture get nice and soft background
  • flare is pretty average, lots of ghosting. Sometimes you see rainbow pattern, but that’s not the lens, it’s reflection coming from the sensor, which you can see on a lot of modern cameras
  • autofocus speed is fine, it is not super fast, but on medium format you don’t need ultra fast focussing lenses
  • bokeh is not Chris’ favorite, not the greatest out there, a little bit busy around the edges, and gets more busy if you stop down the lens, but that’s not the end of the world on a wide angle lens
  • it’s a very sharp lens, especially wide open Chris was quite impressed. Very impressive at f/3.5 from center to corner, and corners sharpen up more really nicely if you stop down
  • he took a shot of a deer from far away and cropped in and said “who needs a wildlife lens” (of course joking, but to underline how sharp this lens really is)
  • like the other GF lenses, also this one is optically excellent lens
  • it’s capable of supporting the 100 megapixel resolution of the GFX100
  • nice compact lens, balance nice on GFX50R
  • as for video, the GFX100 got a recent firmware update that supports ProRes Video
  • in video, the lens has very little breathing
  • the entire episode was shot on the GF30mm f3.5
  • compact, fairly wide aperture lens for your GFX system, Chris would totally recommend it, except for one thing: there is also the excellent GF32-64mmF4
  • the GF30mmF3.5 is a little bit better optically compared to the the GF32-64, but the IQ of the 32-64 is great, too
  • but if you like primes, or if you maybe have already the GF45-100mmF4, this could be your lens

Fujinon GF 30mm f/3.5 Shipping July 22: New First Look Reviews, Fuji Guys Overview and Promo Videos

Fujifilm has just announced that the brand new Fujinon GF30mm F3.5 will start shipping on July 22.

BHphoto & Co have therefore updated their pages, and mark it as available on July 23.

It’s curious, that Fujifilm does not seem to push this lens all too much. In fact, they seem to have more quiet approach when promoting this lens. A pity, from all I could see, it is a fantastic lens. And it’s 16mm APS-C equivalent, which is a very popular focal length.

The Fuji Guys posted an unboxing and a few samples, but they could have showed a bit more love for this lens, by giving it a proper full overview. Anyway, here is what they say:

  • 24mm in full frame (16mm in APS-C)
  • weather sealed
  • sample images
  • a bit too wide for Francis taste, but gives interesting perspective
  • end

There is also not much independent reviews. Here is some:

  • bjornmoerman – First Look Review – Fujifilm GF 45-100 f4
  • kaarebak – The last of the triplets

And some Promo material:

The 16mm focal length is one of the best sellers in the APS-C world. Let’s see if the GF30mm can duplicate that success.

Fujinon XF 35mmF2 vs XC 35mmF2 Size and Specs Comparison – Same Same, But Different

Fujifilm 35mm Battle

Which was the best selling gear among the FujiRumors community in the entire year 2019?

Give it a look… you might find some surpises.

When it comes to best selling overall in 2019, the throne went to the much loved Fujinon XF 35mm f/2.

Well, in just a few hours a new 35 prime will join the Fujinon lineup, the Fujinon XC 35mm f/2.

I decided to take my time during this long sleepless night (don’t ask me in which conditions I’ll go teaching tomorrow :D ), to compare the specs and size.

As you can see below, the optical formula seems to be the same, so I guess we can expect great result also from the Fujinon XC 35mm f/2.

However, the Fujifilm XC 35mm f/2 lacks of the much loved aperture ring.

Also, the Fujinon XC 35mm f/2 is lighter, since it’s made mostly out of plastic (even the lens mount). But that’s the case also in other Fujinon XC lenses.

So same same, but definitely different.

And I have the feeling, that the Fujinon XF35mmf/2 will reign undisturbed also in 2020 among your favorite lenses.

Don’t forget to:
