Profoto Air Remote TTL-F Compatible with Fujifilm X-H1 and X-T20 Support Coming in April

Currently, the Profoto Air Remote TTL-F supports Fujifilm GFX 50S, X-T2, X-Pro2 and X100F, but as we told you back in December, they announced support for further Fujifilm cameras.

Well, besides the Fujifilm X-H1, which is compatible out of the box with the Air Remote TTL-F, Profoto announced that Fujifilm will release a firmware upgrade in April to make it compatible also with the Fujifilm X-T20.

Would be great if they could add also support for X-T1, but at this point we can be fairly pessimistic that this won’t happen.

REMINDER: The Fujifilm X-T20 will get a massive firmware update in April, that is definitely worth to be called a “Kaizen update”. We have shared the full details of the X-T20 update here.

Panasonic Announces 8K 36 Megapixel Global Shutter Organic Sensor… and Time To Stop Sony’s Sensor Hegemony

Organic Sensor

Rarely the development of a new sensor technology has been officially announced so often like the one of the organic sensor.

It started back in 2013 with Panasonic/Fujifilm. Official statements about its development continued to be published ever since by both, Fujifilm and Panasonic (full list at the very bottom of this article).

And now comes the next official press release. This time Panasonic says that “it has developed” an organic sensor with the following main characteristics:

  • Organic Sensor
  • 8K
  • 36 Megapixel
  • Global Shutter
  • OPF CMOS image sensor design technology
  • electronically-controlled variable ND filter function
  • In-pixel capacitive coupled noise cancellation technique
  • In-pixel gain switching technology
  • Voltage controlled sensitivity modulation technology

You will find a more detailed description in the full press release below.

In the press release, Panasonic writes:

we will utilize this OPF CMOS image sensor technology in various applications such as broadcasting cameras, surveillance cameras, industrial inspection cameras, automotive cameras, etc., and will contribute to realize high resolution, high speed and high precision imaging and sensing functions.”

They do not explicitly mention “digital photocameras“, but 43rumors specualtes that this could already be the sensor of the Panasonic GH6, which will shoot 8K video.

We know that the organic sensor is interesting also for the photography industry, since a Fujifilm managers said in 2016 here:

We don’t have any specific plans of incorporating an organic sensor into our products at the moment, but yes we are observing the progress of this technology. As of today, there would be No benefits to using an organic sensor. Our X-Trans III sensor is superior to the currently available organic sensor.

At this stage, I’m not sure if Panasonic and Fujifilm are still developing this sensor together. The original press-release of their organic sensor partnership has been taken down.

However, Fujifilm is still investing R&D into the organic sensor, as we could read from their press-release back in February 2017, where they announced the development of world’s fastest organic CMOS circuit for multi-bit flexible temperature sensor.

Sony Sensor Hegemony

Don’t get me wrong, Sony makes the best sensors, so Fujifilm should buy them from Sony (as they do now), but we definitely need more competition in a market dominated by Sony (especially since Sony bought Toshiba sensor business, who made Fuji’s 2/3 sensors).

TowerJazz, Samsung, and maybe soon the organic sensor by Panasonic and Fujifilm, are all welcome alternatives.

Currently, Sony can set the sensor price almost to their pleasure. With more competition, they will have to lower the price in order to keep their customers.

And of course, the best solution would be if Fujifilm (maybe together with Panasonic) can finally manufacture their own (organic) sensors, which on paper has impressive specs and would definitely be a game changer in the industry.

Of course, Sony is working on its own organic sensor, too, as a FR-reader reminded us in the comments. But I think it would be better for Fujifilm / Panasonic to have their own sensor.

With all that said, here is the Panasonic press release.

Panasonic Develops Industry’s-First*1 8K High-Resolution, High-Performance Global Shutter Technology using Organic-Photoconductive-Film CMOS Image Sensor
The new technology enables 8K high resolution and high picture quality imaging without motion distortion, even in extremely bright scenes.

Godox AD600 PRO Review, Part 1: First Impressions

The Godox Witstro AD600 PRO has landed! Markus Klinko offers an early hands-on review, with comparisons to the original Godox H1200.

guest post by Markus Klinko

Today, as everything in Shenzhen is coming to a shrieking halt, for Chinese New Year’s celebration, a DHL box arrived from China at my studio, containing the first actual production model of the much anticipated AD600 PRO.

Ever since it was announced first, on October 25th of last year, that a PRO version was rumored to be in the works, speculations on the internet about this new model have run wild.

If you have read my previous article, you know by now that I have been quite enamored with the H1200, the previous Godox flagship portable flash, powered by two AD600 units.

Now, seeing the new PRO version in person, it is a stunning achievement by Godox, and perhaps another nail in the coffin of the established European flash brands and their ill-fated battery powered products.

Make no mistake, the guys in Switzerland and Sweden still make some of the best studio units and special light shaping tools.

But in terms of portable battery flash, Godox has just crowned themselves as the undisputed king of the business!

The Pro is an incredibly well designed and highly efficient light and will be for sure the market leader for some time to come.

Sony A7rIII Vs. Fujifilm GFX 50s: “GFX Best IQ of Any Mirrorless. Speaking from the Heart, there is Something Special About the GFX”

Sony A7r III vs Fujifilm GFX 50s

Mirrorlessons shared their Sony A7rIII Vs. Fujifilm GFX 50S image quality comparison.

As usual, it is a very comprehenisve and well done test, so make sure to check it out here. From the conclusions:

Certainly the Fujifilm GFX 50s delivers the best image quality I’ve seen from a mirrorless camera to date. Landscape, portrait, architecture or still life photographers who seek the ultimate sharpness, dynamic range and colours can find in the GFX the perfect companion.

However it is also true that the A7r mark III’s performance comes close and retains a few advantages such as the better high ISO output. So if you add in the additional versatility (fast AF, 4K video, etc.) as well as the lens choice and price, it is hard not to see the A7r III as the best option on the table.

But speaking purely from the heart, I admit that there is something rather special about the GFX. The distinctive look produced by the sensor, lenses and colour profiles working together is second to none in the mirrorless category. Yes, it is niche product and I would probably never buy one, but I can understand why some photographers wouldn’t hesitate to do so.”

Again, don’t miss the whole thing, and jump over to mirrorlesscomparisons.

And if the price point of the GFX 50S scares you, just wait a bit, and get the Fujifilm GFX 50R, which will be annonced very likely within 2018, but might hit the market only in 2019.

On the other hand, if what you need an overall snappier camera, wait for the GFX 100S in 2019, but that one will cost you quite a bit.

Fujifilm/Fujinon’s MK Zoom Lens Series Honored in Several Best-Of Lists… Meant for Fujifilm X-H1 :)

The Fujinon MK zoom lenses (MK18-55mm F2.9 + MK50-130mm T2.9) will soon be available also for Fujifilm X mount.

As we reported already back in July 2017, they were designed without OIS (optical image stabilization), because Fujifilm considers them the perfect companion to the upcoming Fujifilm X-H1, which will feature IBIS (in body image stabilization).

Regarding the Fujifilm X-H1, we have leaked a vast number of specs already, and the latest overview can be found here.

Back to the MK lenses… we have reported over the last months about the several recognitions the MK lenses got, and Fujifilm USA now made a nice summary about all of them, which you can read in the press release below:

Support for Homeless People

As you might have noticed, here on FujiRumors we are convinced supporters of charity initiatives. In fact, over the last two years, thanks to your support, we collected $5,000 for free education to Cambodian kids, and as you can see above, the kids wanted to say “Thank you” to all of you guys :)

This time, I’d like to bring to your attention a charity initiative launched by our friends at Cosyspeed camera bags.

They have launched a special edition bag, the CAMSLINGER Streetomatic Valerie Jardin bag (Valerie shoots Fuji ;) ), and $25 of each sold bag go to the project #dosomethingfornothing, a project of London based stylist Joshua Coombes who gives free haircuts to homeless people.

Joshs project has grown quickly to 180 thousand followers on Instagram and he was featured in Morgan Freemans show on National Geographic and The Washington Post.

Fujifilm X-T20 Will Get Extensive Firmware Update Early 2018 – Fujifilm Germany

There Will Be Kaizen… for X-T20

*** NEW FIRMWARE TODAY ***
for X-T1, X100F and X-T20.
All details here

Fujifilm just ended 2017 with a bunch of firmware updates, some definitely worth to be called Kaizen, like the one for the X-T2 last month and the upcoming X-Pro2 firmware.

However, X-T20 owners were not so lucky, and basically could enjoy just the new EVF/Touch screen feature. Hence, all X-T20 were disappointed not to get the faster AF-tracking, the highlight blinkies, the RGB histogram and more.

But there is hope :)

Fujifilm Germany said in the comments (back on December 1) to one of their facebook posts (google translated):

The x-T20 will get this feature [X RAW Studio support] with an extensive firmware update. The update is expected to be available early / spring 2018. Unfortunately, implementation is not possible for all models at the same time.”

If Fujifilm Germany has correct information, then it is just a matter of time, and also Fujifilm X-T20 owners will get their Kaizen Love. And considering how successful the X-T20 line is, the “extensive X-T20 firmware update” in early 2018 will make many photographers happy.

Thanks to the FR-reader, who just dropped me this link. As you can see, it seems a news only exists once it is on FujiRumors. So even though the comment is old, there were no reports about it on the web.

However, what I don’t see, you see it. Thanks a TON for your support. It means everything to me. Feel free to keep up sharing :)
