Fujifilm 2021: Is This Really All? Or How Much New Gear We Could Get in 2021 Looking at Fujifilm’s Past Camera & Lens Releases

Fujifilm 2021 – Is This Really All?

Every week I get many emails from fellow FR-readers, asking me if this is really all.

They look at the current X mount roadmap and the latest G mount roadmap, and they see only 3 lenses in total. That’s meager.

Then they look at our rumors, see that we rumored only two cameras, the Fujifilm GFX100S and the Fujifilm X-E4 and wonder if that’s all for 2021.

I diligently reply to all of them, but it has become quite time consuming. So let me address this question one final time here on FujiRumors, so that in future I can just copy and paste the link to this article and send it to those, who inevitably will make me the same question again.

How Many Cameras Could we Get?

The Power of Fujifilm Colors: Why I LOVE Fuji Colors and See Them in Action at Our Film Simulations Group

I don’t know you, but when I look at an image, the first thing I notice is not how sharp it is at 400% magnification or how grainy it is at 12800 ISO.

Nope!

What first grabs my attention are subject/composition and colors. Those are the main “WOW” factors for me.

And while for the first one (subject/composition) no Fujifilm camera can help you and it’s totally up to the photographer to compose a pleasing image, when it comes to colors, Fujifilm cameras can be quite a good support for us photographers, and certainly they are for me.

Since I switched to Fujifilm (after a long journey searching for “my” system), I have quite radically changed (and speed-up) my editing-workflow thanks to Fuji’s film simulations.

I still shoot RAW+JPEG, I still adjust exposure, add sharpening here and there and make some other tweaks. But the more film simulations Fujifilm was releasing over the years, the less I found myself in the need to laboriously edit the color part of my images in order to set the right mood.

Not to talk of all those times, when the JPEG is just right out of the box, and I don’t adjust anything at all.

So yes, for me, Fujifilm film simulation make a whole lot of difference and are one of the main reasons why I love Fujifilm.

In order to celebrate Fujifilm colors, I recently launched the Fujifilm Film Simulation group, which has reached 10+K members in a very short time.

In this group, images can be edited in all their parts (sharpening, shadow/highlight recovery etc), except for colors. The colors must come purely out of your Fujifilm camera (or be applied in post in Capture One / Lightroom).

It is also allowed to share images that use custom presets, which means take a film simulation and fine tune its settings in-camera (increase contrast, add grain etc), creating your own receipts to store as custom profile inside your Fujifilm camera. Those are very fun to try out!

Now, since I am in total lockdown again (see me here chilling with my dog and cat at home), I have a bit more time this weekend and I decided to use it to go though the images at our Fujifilm Film Simulation group and pick out some of the most liked shots for you.

You’ll see images taken with all kind of film simulations, but you’ll notice that Classic Chrome and Classic Negative turn out to be the most shared and liked ones (or receipts derived from those film simulations).

But also ACROS, Velvia, Provia and one of my favorites, Astia, are also present down below.

Feel free to check out the images below and to join the group if you want.

NOTE: if you join the group and share images, do not forget to tell us which film simulation you used in the description of the image.

I wish you a fantastic weekend,
Patrick

IBIS Performance of X-S10, X-T4 and X-H1 on All Fujifilm X Mount lenses Compared

The Fujifilm X-S10 features a brand new IBIS unit.

  • it’s 30% smaller than then one on the Fujifilm X-T4
  • it’s half a stop less effective than the Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS (up to 6 stops instead of up to 6.5 stops)

You can see the IBIS unit of X-S10 side by side with the one of X-T4 and X-H1 in this article.

But which Fujinon X mount lens gets how much stabilization on the X-S10? Well, you can see the answer in the chart above.

Also, the IBIS data above gives you a side by side comparison between X-S10, X-T4 and X-H1.

To sum it quickly up:

  • 22 Fujinon lenses work best with X-T4
    XF10-24 MK I – XF10-24 MK II – XC15-45 – XC16-50 MK II – XF18-55 – XF14 – XF16/1.4 – XF16/2.8 – XF18 – XF23/1.4 – XF23/2 – XF27 – XF35/1.4 – XF35/2 – XC35/2 – XF50-140 – XF50/1 – XF50/2 – XF56 – XF56APD – XF60 – XF8-16
  • 7 Fujinon lenses work best with X-T4 and X-S10
    XF18-135 – XC50-230 – XF55-200 – XF100-400 – XF200 – XF90 – XF16-55
  • 2 Fujinon lenses work equally well on X-S10, X-T4 and X-H1
    XF80mmF2.8 – XF16-80

Remember: Fujifilm declared downsizing IBIS one of the top priorities. And so far it seems they are proceeding pretty fast.

CORRECTION: Fujifilm Spain Says Classic Negative Firmware for Fujifilm X-T3 is NOT Confirmed… and I Wouldn’t Lose Hope Yet!

False Alarm

Just yesterday we reported how Fujifilm Spain said that the next X-T3 firmware update will include Classic Negative film simulation.

Now Fujifilm Spain is correcting their statement. They deleted the comment they made on Instagram and they contacted the Spanish website Fujistas and told them:

We have no official confirmation as to whether the new firmware update for the Fujifilm X-T3 camera will include the Classic Negative film simulation mode

Fujifilm Spain told Fujistas that they confused X-T3 with X-S10 (the latter one has Classic Negative).

That’s a huge pity, but if I was a Fujifilm X-T3 shooter, I wouldn’t give up hope.

Is there Still Hope?

Implementing Classic Negative to the Fujifilm X-T3 is something Fujifilm can do rather easily, as it shares the same processor of the X-T4 and X-S10. And I strongly believe that at some point somebody at the Japanese Fujifilm HQ will have a momentary lapse of reason and give out the order to put Classic Negative into the X-T3!

My idea? (not rumor)

Fujifilm might just want to wait a little bit longer to bring Classic Negative to the X-T3, to protect even more X-T4 sales, which started shipping only 6 months ago in the middle of a worldwide pandemic putting the world under lockdown and causing a worldwide economic crisis… not the best conditions to launch a new camera.

Don’t get me wrong, the X-T4 is like all other X-Tx cameras a hot seller for Fujifilm, but given how amazing* 2020 was so far, it probably didn’t meet the very high target sales Fujifilm envisioned for this camera.

Giving the X-T4 a little “artificial” firmware advantage helps a bit to bring its sales more in line with what Fujifilm was expecting and hoping.

And guys, we all want Fujifilm to survive and possibly even flourish in the camera market, and hence we must accept a bit of Realpolitik because of that.

With all that said, once X-T4 sales are better and probably passed its peak [which I expect to be in early spring 2021], I am confident Fujifilm will give us Classic Negative also on the X-T3.

*sarcastic statement

Fujifilm Spain: Classic Negative Film Simulation Coming to Fujifilm X-T3 via Firmware Update on October 28 – UPDATE

UPDATE: Fujifilm Spain has now deleted the comment and told to Spanish news sites that Classic Negative for X-T3 is not confirmed. Read all details here.

Fujifilm has recently officially announced a major firmware update for Fujifilm X-T3 to come on October 28.

To know what it will bring, check out this post.

Missing from the official list of features is the lovely Classic Negative film simulation (which I love to use for my street photos).

But there is hope!

According to a report by the Spanish website Fujistas, they got confirmation from Fujifilm Spain that Classic Negative will be included in the big Fujifilm X-T3 firmware 4.00 update of late October. And indeed, if you look at Fujifilm Spain Instagram, you can see they told to their followers that Classic Negative will be included.

So, let’s cross fingers. I really love Classic Negative on my X-T4, and I strongly hope that also all X-T3 shooters will soon be able to enjoy this beautiful film simulation, too.
