Check Your Lenses… and a Little Ode to My (and Your) Local Store

One of the reasons why I like to buy my gear at the local dealer (instead of ordering online), is that I can always inspect the gear before buying it.

So, when last month I bought the XF10-24 and XF27mm, my dealer opened the boxes, checked if there was any issue such as dust spots inside the lens, and he even checked if the latest firmware for the lenses was installed (it wasn’t, so he updated the lens firmware in store for me… AWESOME!)

So far, with ALL Fujinon lenses I have ever bought, I never had any dust spot issue. Actually I always perceived my lenses as excellently build. I mean, my XF35mmF1.4 still works perfectly, even though it was minutes completely under water, the day I destroyed my X-E2 in a river.

Anyway, I know things like dust spots in the lens happen, and I experienced them in the past when I used other systems. Since then, my habit is to visually check lenses, before buying them.

If small, then dust spots will have absolutely no influence on image quality.

However, when you pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a new lens, you do want it to be perfect out of the box, and personally I would change any new lens, even if it has the smallest dust inside it.

With that said… let’s talk about Fujifilm quality.

Sony’s 100 Megapixel Medium Format Sensor – for Fujifilm GFX100S – will Shoot 4K and 8K. Ready in 2018

Back in March and April 2017, Sony officially presented to the world their future medium format sensors. There were three sensors, but relevant for Fuji Medium Format users, is the IMX461, a new 100 Megapixel 44x33mm medium format back illuminated sensor that will be ready for 2018.

Now more details have been disclosed by Sony about the next generation 44×33 MF sensor, which will very likely be the core of the new Fujifilm GFX100S.

Sony says it will be capable of 4K video at 30fps and 8K video at 18fps. It remains to see how much heat will be generated by the sensor/processor and if the Fujifilm GFX100S body can properly dissipate it.

And hopefully Fuji’s processor will be powerful enough to process the huge amount of data properly.

So what can we expect from the Fujifilm GFX100S?

  • 100 Megapixel
  • BSI sensor
  • 4K (maybe even 8K) video
  • less moiré due to the higher megapixel count
  • sharper than Japanese steel*
  • faster sensor readout allows…
  • … faster AF speed
  • … faster continous shooting
  • … better EVF refresh rate

*Fujifilm said that the GF lenses are designed to support 100MP resolution… so, even if it’s hard to believe given how sharp the GFX files already are, the GF lenses currently underperform on the GFX 50S.

The fact that the sensor will be ready for 2018, does not necessarily mean that the Fujifilm GFX100S will also hit the market in 2018.

DxOMark Will Test Medium Format Cameras Soon. Fujifilm GFX 50S to be Tested Soon?

Recently I asked DxO Mark on Twitter why they do not test the Fujifilm GFX 50s.

They answered, they do not test X-Trans cameras, because their RAW measurements were designed for Bayer RGB files.

I replied that the Fujifilm GFX 50S has a Bayer sensor… and they never answered again.

But maybe something is moving now. DxOmark told to Petapixel here:

“We made a pause on medium format a few years ago just because of our production bandwidth, […] We will now soon republish this type of camera, and Pentax 645Z should be published soon […] in a matter of days.”

DxOMark already started testing the Pentax 645Z a few years ago, but never finshied the complete test. However, somehow the totale score leaked on their website anyway, and it was a stellar 101. So the Pentax 645Z, presented back in April 2014, scored even better than the brand new Nikon D850.

It will be interesting to see if the full Pentax 645Z test, that will be published by DxOmark soon, will confirm the stellar 101 score.

And let’s hope that the Fujifilm GFX 50S will be next.

Fujifilm GFX 50s Review: “Breath-Taking Image Quality. Best Value for Money of Any Medium Format EVER!” (ePhotoZine)

ePhotozine just published their full Fujifilm GFX 50s Review. From their conclusions:

Sony Officially Shows New Medium Format Sensor Roadmap at CEBit… with 100MP BSI Sensor (for Fujifilm GFX 100s)

Mirrorlessrumors put an end to the doubt, if the recent video showing a 100MP and 150MP Back illumiated Medium Format sensor was just an April fool’s or not.

And it was not!

In an official PDF document of sony-semicon here, the company shows:

1) New 100MP 44x33mm Medium format Back Illuminated sensor would be announced in 2018 (for the kind of cameras like the Fuji GFX and X1D)
2) New 150MP 55x41mm Medium format Back Illuminated sensor would be announced in 2018 (for the kind of cameras like the Phase One 100XF).
3) New 150MP 55x41mm Medium format Back Illuminated monochrome sensor would be announced in 2018

The new sensor for the Fujifilm GFX 100S (the IMX461) will be ready for 2018, which doesn’t mean, though, that the GFX 100S will also come in 2018.

Sony Presents New BSI 100MP Medium Format Sensor (for Fujifilm GFX?) to Be Launched in 2018

The news spotted by mirrorlessrumors today got posted on March 31. We can only hope Armdevices didn’t try to fool us by posting it one day earlier to make it sound more credible.

They video shows a new 100MP back illuminated Sony’s medium format. mirrorlessrumors summary of the video:

1) New 100MP 44x33mm Medium format Back Illuminated sensor would be announced in 2018 (for the kind of cameras like the Fuji GFX and X1D)
2) New 150MP 55x41mm Medium format Back Illuminated sensor would be announced in 2018 (for the kind of cameras like the Phase One 100XF).

Fujifilm GFX Review

Quick history lesson. The original Lamborghini motor vehicle wasn’t the supercar you know today. They were tractors. Yes, tractors. Full fledged farm going vehicular tools. Ferruccio Lamborghini always loved cars and owned Ferraris, but hated the quality of them. Frustrated, he approached Enzo Ferrari and gave him a piece of his mind and told him how to improve his cars. Enzo’s response went something like, “Leave the car making to me, you stick to making tractors.” Batman now drives a Lamborghini Aventador.

Fast forward and cross universes to cameras. The giants such as Hasselblad and Phase One have been untouchable and left alone to rule the medium format world for sometime. Sure, there’s Pentax and Leica, but it’s more like buying a Mazda Miata or a 4-door Porsche, it’s not what you think of when sports car or medium format camera comes to mind. But here we are with Fujifilm, originally a film company, pulling a move like Ferruccio Lamborghini; they’re opening the doors to somewhere that’s otherwise been locked for what feels like all of eternity.

Phase One makes amazing medium formats that few ever touch but all hope and dream of. Hasselblad is quite similar but have introduced something that seemed ground breaking, a mirrorless medium format in the Hasselblad X1D. Now, just like Ferruccio answered to Enzo Ferrari, Fujifilm has brought out the Fujifilm GFX. Will this be a classic like the Lamborghini Diablo? Or is this a Mazda Miata in disguise? Well, I’ve got the keys and this is what I’ve learned.

First off, like anyone else with a new toy in their hands I played with the lifeless camera as the completely dead batteries charged painfully slow. Here are the first impressions.
