Thomas Heaton Fujifilm X-T3 Editing: “Capture One is Amazing, I can See Why Pros Use it, but if You Use Lightroom, Get This Plug-in!”

In his latest video (see below), Thomas Heaton talks about the photography software he use to process his Fujifilm X-T3 RAW files. He tested

Save 25% off on Capture One 20 all cameras and Capture One 20 for Fujifilm cameras using the coupon code “25EXTRA” (valid til February 5)

Here are some considerations:

  • Lightroom only: worm effect. Strange things go on. Images do not look great
  • Lightroom with enhanced details: cleans up files, no worms, initially files look better. But he realized he loses lots of details actually, and hence looks softer
  • Capture One: file looks fantastic. C1 does an amazing job. Nice clean file. He can see why Pros use that
  • Iridient X Transformer: simple to install. Converts Fuji RAW files to DNG file and takes care of sharpening. The results are very close to Capture One results. Image looks cleaner, better. Very impressed with Iridient X Transformer

And in real life? Thomas printed the same image using the 4 different methods. He can’t see any difference. You need a loupe and super close, to see difference.

The only real noticeable difference appears during the editing process. You look at high res monitor super magnified. But when printed, you don’t really see difference.

But although in real world you can’t see real difference, you want to work with the best file possible, enjoy the processing. He recommends Capture One or Iridient X Transformer.

Thomas Heaton decided to use Iridient X Transformer. It’s almost as good as Capture One, and he can keep all his Lightroom workflow.

But if you don’t have problems to switch, he would recommend Capture One.

Dark Navy Blue Fujifilm X-A7 for Sale Now in Selected Countries and X-A7 In Stock Everywhere

Even before the official Fujifilm X-A7 announcement, FujiRumors told you here there will be also a dark blue version of the Fujifilm X-A7, and we showed you first images months ago here.

Since then, I have received a few request from readers, asking me about the dark blue version.

It might have been passed unnoticed, as I already said it here, so I thought I might say it again: the dark blue Fujifilm X-A7 is already selling, but not in all countries (as reported also by pcmag).

For example, you can find the Navy Blue Fujifilm X-A7 at the Russian store interfoto here.

So far, it is not available in North America or many EU countries, but it might come, if that color turns out to be particularly loved in the markets where it’s sold. Just as it happened with the brown Fujifilm X100F, which originally was sold only in selected countries, and then found its way also in the US market, although it is now again discontinued.

What you can find in stock everywhere, are all other Fujifilm X-A7 colors.

All APS-C Shortcomings Exposed in this Image Roundup, and How I Couldn’t “Recover” my Wife – #photosfujicanttake

Photos Fuji Can’t Take

Sometimes I wonder, why do I stick with APS-C and plague myself into a world full of photographic shortcomings?

It’s frustrating, for example recently, when I edited an image of my wife watching a sunset.

I exposed for the highlights, and my wife turned out basically pitch black, you can’t even see her shiny yellow dress.

Now watch the image below (or link to the video) and see how impossible it was to recover her with my APS-C Fujifilm X-E3 file. I needed hours and hours of editing, but it turned out completely unusable anyway. A memory thrown away due to my underperforming APS-C camera.

But my case is just one of many that fall under the section #photosfujicanttake.

So, I will list a few more images exposing the terrible shortcomings of Fujifilm APS-C, all shared at our Fujifilm X-T User group, which is full of depressed photographers dreaming of full frame or even medium format.

Sure, some brave guys try to compensate for the immense APS-C limitations with creativity and skills, but that’s not going to work at the end. We all know true photography is all about specs, 500% magnification and 10+ stops push.

I know it’s hard to digest, but the images below show that APS-C simply can’t deliver. Luckily Apple gave us a Pro photographer iPhone 11 Max. I think I am going to try with that one.

NOTE: I hope your sarcasm detector is ON ;)

Lightroom Enhanced Details for Fujifilm X-Trans Files Tested – Fuji Users Beware, Wormy Artifacts Fixed?

Adobe & Fujifilm

Last week Adobe launched the new “enhance details” feature, which, according to Adobe, will improve details in your images by up to 30%!

The feature is also supposed to demosaic Fujifilm X-Trans images better, and we have a first feedback about it here.

The testing continues, and overall will can sum it up like this:

  • helps against wormy artifacts
  • slow and processor intensive, creates new DNG files, hence do not apply to many images, but better select only important images or images you want to print big

Now let’s get into the specific reviews.

First Looks at ADOBE’s New Enhance Details Feature for Sharper Fujifilm X-Trans files

Adobe Enhance Details

Earlier today Adobe released Camera Raw 11.2 with a new detail enhancement feature, which promises 30% improved details rendering for Bayer and also for Fujifilm X-Trans files.

To access the new feature, click on the image and select “Enhance Details“, click on OK and it’s done!

As to expect there are over 100 comments already in this FujiRumors article, with lots of feedback about Adobes improved engine.

In the comments on FujiRumors, you will find bug reports, comparison files on dropbox to download and more. So make sure to check the lively comment section in this article.

Overall initial feedback: there is an improvement indeed.

Hey Adobe, too many people switched to Capture One 12, hu?

Anyway, also Thomas tested the new enhance detail feature, and here are some excerpts:

  • creates artifact free image
  • it’s very processor intensive, hence slow. Use with fast computer [FR readers say around 10 seconds processing]
  • sharper and cleaner than Iridient X Transformer, especially when it comes to colour details. Edges are cleaner, too
  • Iridient X Transformer is still faster
  • good job at rendering X-Trans files
  • It’s an extra step, but quality wise, it is up there with the best.

Thomas also explains, why Adobe does not simply change their demosaicing for X-Trans.

fixing” the X-Trans issues would have required significantly changing the most vital part of the rendering process – the demosiacing – It would have required significant engineering effort to change it for X-Trans rendering and not break the backwards compatibility, and may not have been possible without affecting the way the system works.

Adobe Releases DNG Converter 11.0 with Fujifilm X-T3 Support

Adobe DNG Converter 11.0

Another day, and another breaking news here on fujirumors.com ;).

Adobe has just released the DNG Converter 11.0 with support for the Fujifilm X-T3. You can download it for Windows here and Mac here.

Thanks to the DNG converter, it is now possible to convert X-T3 RAW files to DNG and work with them in Lightroom.

Another workaround to finally edit your Fuji X-T3 RAW files in Adobe, is to get Iridient X Transformer and convert X-T3 files to DNG using Iridients superior X-Trans demosaicing.

And if you consider leaving Lightroom, Capture One 11 now offers a standalone Fujifilm version.
