Rethinking How I Shoot Fuji Jpegs :: How I Process Fuji RAF files – The Power of X-Trans Zone :)

How I Edit / Process Fuji .RAF files at ZedProMedia Youtube

The Power of X-Trans

Fujifilm files are so lovely out of the box, that I find myself processing images way less than I did in my non-Fuji shooter life.

But truth is, I’m not Ken Rockwell, so I don’t get it always right in camera ;).

There are situations, such as recently at my mothers’ 60 years birthday party, were I do not have much time to think about the settings. So many things happen and change all the time, that I rather focus on capturing the moment, knowing that the huge flexibility of my X-Trans files will allow me to correct eventual exposure errors I made in post.

However, processing your RAW files is not only a way to fix some errors, but also a terrific creative tool.

So here is a roundup, dedicated to the power of X-Trans :)

User Review of the Fujifilm GFX – Compared to Hasselblad X1D, Leica, and Sony

Shot with Fujifilm GFX 50s with 63/2.8 for Lovebite Magazine

Written for Fuji Rumors by Rick Birt of romeobravophoto.com

*Note* This is a long post – I have a summary of pros and cons in my conclusion

As soon as the Hasselblad X1D-50c and Fuji GFX 50s were announced, I wanted one. The promise of Medium Format in a cheaper, and smaller package was incredibly alluring. For the past year my main camera has been a Fuji X-Pro2. I love it. I love the image quality, the colors, the size, and the Rangefinder styling. I also love Fujifilm’s Kaizen philosophy of constantly updating their camera lineup via firmware. All of these things influenced my decision toward the GFX. Luckily, my wife (Kelly Williams), and I were also given the opportunity to demo the Hasselblad X1D. The svelte styling, leaf shutter (ability to sync strobes at 1/2000s), and simple menus were all big pluses in the Hassy’s favor.

When we opened the boxes, we were woefully unimpressed by the Fuji GFX. Even though it kind of looks like a bigger X-T2, it’s actually kind of ugly in person. It almost looks like three different teams designed parts of the camera, and then they Frankenstein’d it all together in the end.

In stark contrast when we opened the X1D box, my wife said,

“We may have to buy two of these so we don’t fight over it.”

Similarly, we conducted two fashion shoots with these cameras. When we brought out the X1D, both models said

“Oh! A Hasselblad!”

Neither commented on the GFX.

Should this matter? My left brain says no. However, it does matter. What is this industry about? IMAGE. These tools are used to take images, because the world has placed value on images of pretty things. Don’t kid yourself, image is paramount in this business – especially in fashion and portraits.

Final Version of X-LR is Out, The Plug-in that Automatically Applies Fuji Film Simulations in Lightroom. Now 33% Off!

I already reported back in March here you about the BETA version of X-LR, the Lightroom plug-in that reads Fujifilm’s Film Simulation from your RAW file and automatically applies corresponding profile when you import your images to LR.

Now the new and final version of X-LR has been released. You can check out all the details at lightroomsolutions.com/jb-xlr

And until June 14 there is a 33% discount on it.

It works with:

  • Raw files from all Fuji cameras including the GFX
  • DNGs including those generated from Iridient X-Transformer

What X-LR does:

  • Reads the film simulation from the raw file
    • Applies the corresponding Camera Calibration Profile
    • Can also apply a Develop Preset
    • Records the film simulation as keywords
  • Applies star ratings from the raw file
  • Uses other Fuji settings to set Lightroom sliders or apply presets

System Requirements

  • The plugin is tested on Mac and PC, and for Lightroom 5 or later.
  • It will not run on Lightroom 4 or earlier.

X20 Award Nominated Image

Award nomination with Fuji X20: Dario Ayala was just nominated for a Canadian National Newspaper Award, the highest recognition for Canadian journalists and photojournalists, for an image that he made last summer using the Fuji X20 whose line, sadly, has been discontinued. The X system gets a lot of love, but this series was a bit overlooked during its existence. See the image on instagram here and link to the nomination here.

Fujifilm GFX
USA BHphoto, Adorama, AmazonUS

Fujifilm GFX facebook member C. shared the image above on the group. It shows a heavily overexposed image and what seems to be an insane highlight recovery capbility of the Fujifilm GFX 50s. This image was a great opportunity to clarify what happens inside the GFX:

X-guru Rico (also GFX facebook member), looking at the image above, explained here:

Sensor analysis shows us that the GFX stops writing gain into the RAW file beyond ISO 1600. So this ISO 6400 shot is actually a ISO 1600 shot that is 2 stops underexposed. So 2 stops of the “amazing highlight recovery” are fake. ;) Lightroom simply applied a virtual 2 stop gain on import, which is of course fully reversable. Basically shooting at ISO 6400 is like shooting with DR400% always on.

Nothing really new here, since all Fujifilm cameras with X-Trans I, X-Trans II and also the X-A1/2 and M1 worked exactly the same way. X-Trans III are different, they bake the gain into each RAW (except for ISO 51200, which is actually ISO 25600 with a 1 stop import gain).

To perform a proper test of sensor highlight recover potential, you have to expose a series of shots at base ISO 100, then try to recover and normalize each of them and see where you put your personal limit of acceptable quality.

it was always nice to have additional DR at high ISO with most EXR I and EXR II cameras. This feature is now back with the GFX, but sadly, Adobe LR/ACR fails to apply correct import amplification in most cases. Basically, everything except for ISO 100, 125, 160 and 200 is somewhat off, often by a larger margin than is acceptable. There’s also a white balance issue at higher ISO settings which affects pretty much all external RAW converters (RAWs from the in-camera converter are okay). Of course, I have documented all of this and sent it to Fujifilm, so maybe Adobe will improve GFX support in a few weeks/months with their next Lightroom update.”

Yesterday, GFX member Wei already pointed out over at the group here after the technical sensor measurements tests by Photons to Photos, that “you can’t push the sensitivity up by adopting an ISO higher than 1600. Your sensitivity stops there

  • 20 Days with GFX 50s at huseyintaskin: “Once you enlarge the photo from the computer and look it up, it creates a quality threshold that will never come out of your mind. Whatever you do, your mind is staying in that quality. […] DR is an advantage for me, I can make cinematic tones more comfortable. Each transition is very soft in these colors that you give me in these intermediate tones. It gives a rich transition result.”
  • Fuji GFX portrait session review at mikekobal: “Impressive sensor performance at low and high ISO settings. Fuji’s color science shines once again, jpegs out of the camera are beautiful, lots of latitude for easy tweaks, better then raw files on certain cameras!”
