Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4: Lots of Distortion, Exposure Inconsistency and Yet a Recommended Lens

Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4

As a free and independent space, here on FujiRumors we report just everything, the good and the not so good, not matter if Fujifilm likes it or not, as my only boss are FR-readers, and I owe you the best service I can deliver.

Hence, today, in this Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 roundup I chose to highlight some aspects of the lens, that are not really that good.

And yet, despite not being a perfect lens, those who review the Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 still end up recommending it, as a great all rounder lens.

At the end, it’s all about finding the right balance, keeping in mind what’s the target group of a certain lens. And I guess in order ot keep size, weight and price down, Fujifilm had to rely more on digital correction in the case of this lens.

HOT: Lowest Price Ever on Anker PowerCore+ 26800 PD Battery Bank – Fujifilm Recommended

Anker PowerCore+ 26800 PD

The Anker PowerCore+ 26800 PD is now selling for the lowest price ever at AmazonUS (regular price $129 – currently $67).

The same battery pack is sold still for €119 at Amazon Germany.

Note that it says “with deal“, probably because it is no longer in production (it is marked discontinued here at BH), so these might be the last samples available.

Hence, if interested, you better grab it now.

I own the Anker PowerCore+ 26800 PD myself, and I am very happy with it.

Fujifilm officially recommends the Anker PowerCore+ 26800 PD (and the Anker PowerCore Speed 20000 PD) battery packs for charging the following Fujifilm cameras via USB: Fujifilm X-T3*, X-T30*, X-T2*, X-H1*, X-E3*, X-T20*, X100F* and X100T*, X-T100**, X-A5**, X-A3**, XF10**.

Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4: Pros and Cons, First Looks and Thougths

Let’s try to kill the endless waiting time with a little Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 roundup.

Rico’s Coverage

Rico’s full XF16-80 coverage is online, and it has been tested also on the brand new Fujifilm X-A7.

Rico’s Conclusions (from Part 8 of his coverage)

Pros

  • Ideal focal length range for an “always on” and travel zoom lens
  • Excellent image quality over the entire focal length range
  • Low minimum focus distance (MFD)
  • Appealing Bokeh (my subjective opinion)
  • Solid build and weather-resistant
  • Constant aperture and marked aperture ring
  • Fast and silent autofocus
  • 6-stop-OIS with automatic tripod and panning detection
  • No hotspots with infrared photography (R72, X-T3)

Cons

  • Slightly larger and heavier than the XF18-55mm kit zoom: ideal for cameras like the X-T3 and X-H1, but maybe a little too bulky for the X-T30, X-T100 or X-A7
  • The pronounced digital barrel distortion correction at 16mm results in a minor but visible sharpness reduction at the edges and in the corners

Additional XF16-80mm f/4 coverage

  • bjornmoerman – Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f4 REVIEW – Comparison with XF18-135
  • ivanjoshualoh – XF16-80mm
  • billfortney – The New Mid-Range King
  • myfujifilm – Thoughts on the Fujinon 16-80mm f/4 by Anton Bosman
  • fujifilm-x – A Quick Look at XF16-80mmF4 R OIS WR by Huseyin Aldirmaz

Fujifilm X-Pro3 Coming with Unique Tilt Screen

Fujifilm X-Pro3

According to our trusted sources, the Fujifilm X-Pro3 will feature a “unique” tilt screen.

Not a fully articulating one (like we know it from Panasonic cameras), not a 3 or 2 way tilting one of current Fujifilm cameras, and not even the smart Fujifilm X-T100 tilt screen, but something different.

Hey guys, if I open the rumor season now, will you follow me on Facebook, Flipboard, RSS-feed, Twitter, Youtube?

Sony Launches A6600 and some Sweet APS-C Lenses – Now Stop Sleeping Fujifilm and Give us MORE LENSES!

Sony finally did it and released very nice APS-C cameras, the Sony A6600 and the Sony A6100full introduction here.

Personally I am very happy about the new Sony cameras, because in the high-end APS-C world, Fujifilm is basically without competition, and Sony is a terrific competitor, that I guess we all very much welcome.

But more than the two new camera bodies, I am particularly happy to see they also announced some interested lenses:

The first one is definitely a Pro lens, and goes right after Fujifilm’s XF16-55mm f/2.8.

The second one is a lens, Fujifilm officially considers to make, and in our huge future lens poll, it makes it into the top 10 of your lens wishes.

With Sony now treating with some fine camera bodies and lenses their APS-C system again, I can only hope that Fujifilm will step on the gas again, too.

In fact, this year, we got only 2 lenses for the X system (and one in the current roadmap for 2020):

Now this 100% confirms what we told you back in 2017, that Fujifilm will release 2/3 lenses for each system (X and GFX) a year.

But now look at the APS-C cameras, Fujifilm released (or will soon release) in 2019:

Now that’s just my opinion, but releasing more cameras than lenses in one year is just wrong.

Fujifilm should focus again on giving us more lenses! And as our recent mega-lens-survey showed, Fuji X shooters definitely have lots of unfulfilled needs there.

So it’s nice to see Sony coming out with some fine APS-C lenses. This might push Fuji to speed up their lens development.
