No Samsung Sensor in Fujifilm X-T3 says Fujifilm Manager (still Sony)

Here on FujiRumors we never joined the big “Fujifilm X-T3 sensor is made by Samsung” buzz and you won’t find a single article or a single comment, where I say that.

All we did is to report about the official cooperation between Samsung and Fujifilm on the ISOCELL+ technology and we reported about rumors surfacing on the web, about Samsung possibly supplying APS-C sensors “in future” (and not now already).

I have always avoided to join Samsung X-T3 sensor speculations, also because I have been contacted by some sources (thanks), who told me it’s a Sony sensor.

Now Fujifilm UK manager Theo Georgiades sets an end to all the speculations by saying in this video at minute 3:38.

“I can confirm that it is definitely not a Samsung sensor. It’s the same manufacturing process that we have gone through with all other X-Trans sensor cameras. Still designed and tested all by our R&D team, but it’s definitely not a Samsung sensor.“

He never mentions Sony, but we know that it’s currently Sony, who manufactures the sensor “designed and tested” by Fujifilm.

However, who knows what will happen in future. The cooperation between Samsung and Fujifilm is real (there is an official press release), and I don’t feel like I can tell you now with 100% certainty, that Samsung will never ever be back in the APS-C sensor business.

Personally I would certainly be happy about Samsung making APS-C sensors again one day, because customers would definitely profit from more competition to Sony in the sensor business.

Is the Fujinon XF 33mmF1.0 too Big? POLL

At photokina 2018 we have finally seen the first mock-ups of the Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0 lens.

The very first detailed image with size comparison was shared by fujirumors here.

After having seen it, the discussions went hot whether this lens is too big or not.

My guess is that Fujifilm knew that a XF33mmF1.0 with autofocus would not be really a portable travel lens anyway, so they decided to go all-in in terms of image quality and AF speed, and make it as big as necessary to become a stellar lens that professional photographers will love to use.

But today I’d be curious to know from those of us, who were interested to buy the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0, if the current size of the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 is a dealbreaker.

The Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 is still under development and will hit the market in 2020. So keep in mind that some things are likely to change until the final release.

Fujinon Roadmap Lenses

For the second time today (first time here), I had to find a way through the security check and get into the Photokina halls. Stealthy like a ninja, I made it again.

This time I was armed with my wonderful Fujifilm X-E3 and I snapped some pictures of the upcoming Fujinon lenses.

I apologize for the quality, since I tried to make my way through a couple of Fujifilm managers and an angry lady, who told me “can I help you” in a tone that clearly ment “p*** off from here“.

So time was limited, the conditions difficult, I could not touch the lenses, but I made it… somehow.

And when nobody was watching, I quickly grabbed a Fujifilm GFX 50R and made a super quick hands on video.

Back to the lenses:

  • XF33mmF1.0: Yes, it’s rather big, especially compared to the Mitakon 35mm F0.95 (manual focus only). I guess Fujifilm wants to make this the ultimate lens in terms of image quality, and still offer a fast AF motor. Filter size 77
  • XF16mmF2.8: Very small. Fits perfect in the Fujicron lineup with the XF23mmF2, XF35mmF2 and XF50mmF2. Filter size 49
  • XF16-80mmF4: This lens, my friends, will fall into the hands of many fellow X-shooters for travels. Filter size 72

New Fujinon XF (Roadmap) Lenses

I thought we take a little break from all those fantastic Fujifilm X-T3 reviews, and get back to the core of every system: lenses!

For 2019/2020, Fujifilm has recently announced a new roadmap which include 3 lenses: XF16-80mmF4 and XF16mmF2.8 for 2019 and XF33mmF1.0 for 2020 (don’t forget to vote our XF 33/1 features request poll).

In 2018 we will get the XF200mmF2 in October and the XF8-16mmF2.8 in November.

There is still not much about this lenses online, but down below is what he have so far.

Overview of the FUJIFILM Exhibition at Photokina 2018

As you know, Fujifilm has launched a dedicated Fujifilm Photokina microsite, where you can check out all the events planed for photokina.

Nokishita just leaked a bunch of specs about the Fujifilm X-T3, and so far it confirms everything we have already rumored since months plus some new stuff, that I had no permission to share, but it’s finally out ;).

Impressive video specs (4K@60p 4:2:0 and 10 bit internal / 4K@60p 4:2:2 and 10 bit external), battery life improved by 15% (390 shots CIPA standard), a blackout-free EVF at 30 fps “sport mode” & more

  • Equipped with back-illuminated “X-Trans CMOS 4” sensor with newly developed effective pixel number of approximately 26.1 million pixels (Low pass filter less)

  • By increasing the number of phase difference pixels to about 4 times the current ratio, the image plane phase difference AF area is expanded to the entire screen area (about 100%)
