Internal Fujifilm Document Predicts 50% Market Share Decrease for Canon and Nikon Within 2021… and About CaNikon’s FF Mirrorless

Canon Vs. Nikon Vs. Fujifilm

** Update: Thom Hogan also things the prediction is BS. Read his article at sansmirrors **

This morning started just as usual.

I woke up at 5:30 AM to prepare my coffee in the fantastic Bialetti Brikka Moka recommended to me by a FR-reader (thanks a ton, a game changer :) ).

Usually I get about 10 emails over night, and I try to reply to all of them as quickly as possible within 6:30 AM, but this morning an email of a source made me almost spill my precious coffee.

I received the information about an internal Fujifilm document that predicts the following scenario:

Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 with New Improved Flare Control

Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8

According to a new source, the Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 WR will have a new and improved flare control.

I guess it will probably use the same new “Anti-Reflection Coating” that we will find in the XF 200mm F2, and that will become standard in most of future Fujinon XF lenses.

We could see some mock-ups of the XF8-16 already in the past. I share them for you again here:

The Fujinon XF 8-16 is the most wanted Fujinon lens on FR-readers’ “To Do” list. And all we know officially from Fujifilm, is that it will be out this year.

TIPA Awards 2018: Fujifilm Left (Almost) Empty-Handed. Only Instax SQ10 Gets Awarded

In the last years, Fujifilm often won quite some of awards at the TIPA awards.

  • 2017: Fujifilm wins 5 awards
  • 2016: Fujifilm wins 3 awards
  • 2015: Fujifilm wins 3 awards
  • 2014: Fujifilm wins 2 awards
  • 2013: Fujfiilm wins 3 awards

Well, this year is the worst for Fujifilm, since the “X-series era“. They won 1 award only, and it goes to the Instax Square SQ10 for the “Best Design“.

So the Fujfiilm X-H1 and Fujifilm X-E3 were not good enought to make it into the TIPA ranking. Let’s hope the upcoming Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm GFX 50R will change it next year.

I am surprised, though, that not even one of the astonishing Fujinon lenses has made it into the list. For example, while the winner of the best mirrorless prime lens, the Samyang AF 35mm F2.8 FE, is surely a fine lens, I can’t see it being superior to the equivalent Fujinon GF 45mm F2.8.

So despite TIPA creating overall 40 categories, there is not much love for Fujifilm this year.

Here are all the winners:

Behind the X Gear: Meet Markus Klinko, the Fujifilm Photographer who Photographed David Bowie, Beyoncé, Will Smith & More

Many Fujifilm X and GFX shooters earn their bread and butter with Fujifilm cameras, and many of those are also extremely successful in their specific genre.

For example, there are Fujifilm shooters, who won prestigeous awards, such as…

  • some won the world wildlife photography award (story here)
  • some made the cover of the TIME magazine (story here)
  • some won the World Photography Arts&Culture Award 2015 (story here)
  • some won the First Prize of the World Press Photo Category “Stories (stroy here)
  • some made the front page of the Wall Street Journal (story here)
  • Fuji X was good enough for God’s work (story here)
  • some captured America’s most hated man (story here)
  • some distracted a French presidential candidate during his interview (story here)
  • and more…

You also probably know Kevin Mullins, one of the top wedding photographers globally speaking, who shoots exclusively with Fujifilm X series camera.

The list could go on and on (and I apologize for all those I didn’t mention here), but today it’s about Markus Klinko, a photographer, who saw his work displayed at Times Square in New York, who photographed top celebrities like Beyoncé (btw, Beyoncé shoots Fujifilm X100s, as you can see her here) and David Bowie.

Markus is also a good friend of FujiRumors, and he has also contributed with several articles on Fujirumors.com.

Today we have the pleasure to dedicate our “Behind the X gear” episode to our friend Markus Klinko. Enjoy :)

Polaroid Says: “Fujifilm Controls 99% of Instax Film Market, But We Are Growing and Have Very Interesting Products Coming”

Polaroid Vs. Fujifilm

Fujifilm and Polaroid are right now battling hard.

As we reported here, Polaroid wants Fujifilm to pay millions of dollars in annual royalty, because they claim Fuji’s Instant Square Film borders are copied from the iconic Polaroid film.

We will keep you updated with the evolution of this battle, but in the meantime, Polaroid Originals (that’s how Polaroid is called after it has been bought by the Impossible Project) gave an interview to the French site focus-numerique, where they talk, amongst the others, about Fujifilm.

Polaroid says (google translated from French):

We are growing, but in terms of the analog instant film market as a whole, Fujifilm is the dominant player. It controls 99% of the market.”

They do seem confident though, that they will take some of the market share away from Fujiflm:

Q: What strategy do you adopt to face Fujifilm’s competition? Are you planning to produce smaller films?”

A: We have very interesting projects on the side of our equipment, but nothing we can reveal for the moment.”

I must say, I do like (and was considering to buy) the Polaroid Zip. And IMHO it is never good, if a company has a monopoly. So I do hope that Polaroid will release some awesome products in near future, that will finally put some pressure on Fujifilm… maybe to motivate Fujifilm to make the long awaited Instax SP-Wide printer!!!!!

Also Leica tried to enter the Instax market, with the Leica Sofort back in 2016. It uses uses Fujifilm’s Instax film, so it contributes to the 99% market share of Fujifilm.

Overall, Instax is an absolut winner for Fujifilm. It’s half a decade now that Instax products dominate the OVERALL camera sales ranking at AmazonUS, and at times, where the X-series was massively losing money, the earnings made with Instax products where used to fuel the R&D for the X-series.

In case you missed it… in the documentary “How Fujifilm survived the digital age” that we shared here, a Fujifilm Instax employee says they simply can’t keep production up with the high demand.

First Look Review: Fujinon GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR

Reaching Out: GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR

The new GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR and the optional GF1.4x TC WR teleconverter lens bring genuine telephoto capability to the evolving Fujifilm GFX medium format system. Featuring impressive detail resolution and three-dimensional subject rendering, the rather moderately priced GF250mm equals a 198 mm lens in 35 mm “full-frame” terms, and its reach can be stretched to 350 mm by attaching the new 1.4x teleconverter. Fujifilm’s GF product introductions are completed by two macro expansion tubes that work with almost all existing GF lenses and can turn the GF120mmF4 into a true 1:1 macro lens.

So is it all worth it? You should be able to decide for yourself after reading this first-look review based on pre-production samples of the GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR, GF1.4x TC WR, MCEX-18G WR and MCEX-45G WR.

Fujifilm Unreleased “FF180001” Camera Registered

Fujifilm just registered an unreleased camera with the code name “FF 180001”.

So what could it be?

Well, here on FujiRumors we rumored the Fujifilm X-T100 since back in September 2017 and we warned you that it will not come in the first quarter of 2018 (within March). However, the first quarter is now over, so maybe we might see in the next few months finally.

The Fujifilm X-T100 will be DSLR-styled Bayer sensor camera with EVF (similar to X-T20), and be more affordable than the current X-T20 (see all X-T100 rumors).

Another option is the X70 successor, which, as we reported here, should have a Bayer sensor, since the current 24MP X-Trans sensor (and the extra processing power required), just creates too many overheating problems in such a small camera body.

I will work on it now and give you guys an update as soon as I can.

In the meantime, read what nokishita, who spotted the registration, writes about it:

“The communication module installed in Fujifilm’s unreleased camera passed overseas certification agencies. Since it is a different radio part from X-E3 and X-H1, it is made by Zakuti just like X-A5.

The distance information to the antenna does not include a protruding part such as a penta part so much, so it will not be very helpful, but the width that will be less uneven appears to be around 121 mm.”
