Fujifilm Autofocus – The Unwritten Guide

GUEST POST FEATURE

Introduction

There are a number of videos and manuals around which cover the Fujifilm autofocus system and settings in detail. The big problem isn’t the things they cover, it’s what they don’t cover. Guides often talk about how to configure and setup your camera, but with this guide, we’ll focus on the hidden things, how to use it to get the best outcomes.

I’m not going to try to cover the basic configurations here, for example, what AF-C or AF-S is. If you want to know how to use the basic settings, I’d recommend the Fujifilm autofocus site or this video from Fujifilm. Now please bare in mind, this is only my experience with the Fujifilm autofocus system, and more specifically my experience with the Fujifilm X-T2 and X-E3 systems. This isn’t an official Fujifilm guide, but in the absence of such a guide, I’m giving it a go.

Laowa 9mm F2.8 Review:

UPDATE: Venus Optics is now taking pre-orders on their latest lens, the Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero-D (zero distortion). The first 100 people buying this lens will get a set of 49mm filters (ND 1000 + CPL +UV ) for free. First comes first, so order now to be high on waiting list. The lens is not yet available at BHphoto & Co.

Jonas Rask just published his Laowa 9mm F2.8 Review… and it comes with tons of stunning samples at jonasraskphotography.

Here some excerpts:

  • absolutely tiny and stelar build quality
  • rectilinear lens, nice straight lines right to the corners
  • It is really sharp in the 3/4 central part of the frame, but it loses a little bit of sharpness towards the edges, there’s also a fair bit of vignetting when shot at f/2.8
  • some gorgeous sun stars
  • vibrant colours and some great contrast
  • this lens is pure fun, fun, fun!
  • It’s such and amazing performer, especially when you take the small size into account.
  • suggest retail price of $499
  • Easily one of the most usable lenses I’ve ever mounted on my X-series system (And I have mounted A LOT over the years!)

Don’t forget to check out all the fantastic samples Jonas Rask took with this lens at jonasraskphotography.

The Laowa 9mm F2.8 will be soon available for pre-order at VenusOptics, AmazonUS, BHphoto and Adorama

There is also a review of the Sony E-mount version at thephoblographer and an Interview/Review about the Laowa 9mmF2.8 Lens with lens designer Dayong Li at fujilove.

Fujinon XF200mmF2 will Cost around $6,000

Fujinon XF200mmF2 OIS

Fujinon XF200mmF2 OIS WR

Hey all…

I hear that the Fujinon XF200mmF2 will cost around $6,000!

Yes, I know this is a hefty price, and you can basically buy a medium format Fujifilm GFX 50S for the same money. But also consider that equivalent lenses in the CaNikon world are also not a bargain.

In fact, the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II costs $6,100 and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II costs $5,500.

As I already told you back in September 2017 here, the Fujifilm XF200mmF2 will be compatible with the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverter, which will give you respectively a 280mmF2.8 and 400mmF4 lens.

Attacking the Niche

I’m sure that the XF200mmF2 will be a fantastic lens, but to track my 13 years old dog, I’ll stick with my XF 55-200 ;) .

However, for professional sports photographers, this lens will be a game changer.

Overall I think it makes a whole lot of sense for Fujifilm to launch such glass.

Fujifilm already offers the vastest lens range in the mirrorless APS-C world and now they must to “attack” those niches, who need THAT particular lens, before they can switch completely to Fujifilm.

Not only XF200mmF2, but also tilt shift lenses or even ultra fast lenses like the XF33mmF1.0 come to mind.

So let us know in the comments, which “niche-glass” you think Fujifilm should launch next.

New Images of Fujinon XC 15-45 and Fujifilm X-A20 Leaked – UPDATE: New X-A5 Images

More images of the Fujinon XC 15-45 and X-A20 leaked at nokishita.

Down below again the main specs of XC 15-45, X-A5 and X-A20 as well as more images

The size of the X-A10 is identical to the one of the X-A20, so we can make a nice comparison between the XC16-50 and XC15-45. But it’s no surprise, because here on FR we already showed you weeks ago here the exact size of the lens, and the latest leak just confirms it ;)

The Fujinon XC15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ OIS will be bigger than Sony’s Power Zoom solution, the Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6, but I guess that Fujifilm tried to find the sweet spot between compact size and image quality.

Not a pancake zoom…. more of a muffin zoom ;)

And remember that Fujifilm outsourced the development of the X-A line, because they needed R&D money for the Fujifilm GFX. We reported about it here.

Fujifilm X-H1: Dual IBIS + OIS Combo Now Working Together!

Fujifilm X-H1 Dual IS

Back in October, I told you that “currently” the OIS and IBIS on the Fujifilm X-H1 do not work together.

However, I also told you that this could be related only to the current firmware and that maybe Fujifilm might be able to implement this feature in future.

And here is today’s good rumor:

I hear that Fujifilm worked on it and that OIS and IBIS now work together. Just in time for the official Fujifilm X-H1 announcement on February 15.

Now, I have no idea about the detailed way it works and if there are still some limitations of some kind. For this, we will have to wait February 15, when the Fujifilm X-H1 will be announced and we will know everything in detail.

But it’s good to know that you will be able to use both, OIS and IBIS, together.

I have my live blogging kit ready… make sure to join us on FujiRumors for the big live blogging on February 15.

What About Sensor Shift Multishot?

Back in September, I told you that the Fujifilm X-H1 will not have the sensor shift multishot feature.

On this front I have not heard anything new, so I guess that at launch it won’t have this feature. But also in this case, maybe Fujifilm will figure it out right in time.

It’s coming… stay tuned on FujiRumors via Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter

Fujifilm X-H1 with Electronic First Curtain Shutter (EFCS)

Fujifilm X-H1

Hey guys! Everything ok? I hope so :) .

I allow myself to bother you today, because there is a new rumor to share, about the Fujifilm X-H1, which will be announced February 15.

According to our trusted sources, the Fujifilm X-H1 will have “electronic first curtain shutter” (EFCS).

robertotoole explains very good how electronic first curtain shutter (EFSC) works:

When you press the shutter button to take a picture the electronic first curtain shutter uses a high-speed scanning system that mimics a mechanical first curtain shutter operation then synchronizes with a mechanical second curtain shutter to cover the sensor and end the exposure. Any vibration caused by the second curtain shutter happens after exposure has ended.

When you press the shutter button to take a picture with EFSC disabled or with a camera without EFSC a mechanical first curtain shutter uncovers the sensor and the second curtain follows along to form a slot to expose the sensor. The mechanical first curtain causes vibrations to occur throughout the exposure. This can lead to image blurring with high magnification macro or telephoto work.”

I know what you think… the X-H1 has the same sensor of X-T2, the same processor of X-T2… so will EFCS come to X-T2 via Kaizen firmware update? Let’s hope so :) .
