Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0: Meet the “Worst” Lens of the Year that Many Want and Love ;)

XF50mm f/1.0 – Worst Lens 2020?

Recently DPRTV declared the Fujinon XF50mm f/1.0 the worst lens of 2020.

Of course this generated a heated debate. And today we are going to discuss this in a dedicated post.

Now, I think we can all agree that the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 is not the sharpest Fujinon lens. But I doubt anyone would seriously expect that from an f/1.0 lens.

I think Jonas Rask described this lens best, when he wrote:

The images coming from XF50mm f/1 R WR has those exact same undefinable traits that makes me love my XF35mm f/1.4 so much. The sharpness that is sharp, yet not overly sharp. A flattering kind of sharpness that seems more rounded, organic and less digital/clinical.

[…]You know that “magic” that everyone is referring to when talking about the old XF35mm f/1.4? […] The focus on making a character lens instead of a “perfect” lens. And that is EXACTLY what the XF50mm f/1 R WR is. A lens full of character, but not a perfect optical creation.

But being not the sharpest, does not mean that it is unusable soft at f/1.0.

On the contrary, many other reviewers praise it for its sharpness all over the frame already at f/1.0.

Let’s Look More at the Worst Lens of the Year

Now also ivanjoshualoh joined the discussion, with his article “Meet the Worst Lens of 2020“. He shows samples taken at f/1.0, and quite frankly, for being at f/1.0, I think that they look totally fine. You can see one of his samples at 200% magnifications in this instagram post and you can check out his full article here.

In the B&H Explora Top 10 Mirrorless lenses list for 2020, the Fujinon XF 50mm f/1.0 R WR grabs the second spot right after the Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM. Read the full list here.

Another one comes from abiggercamera, who also took at look at his XF50mmF1.0 and shared his thoughts in this post.

Last but not least, the first customer reviews at AmazonUS and BHphoto here are also pretty positive.

Nikon F mount to Fujifilm X mount Smart AF Adapter New Features and Coming Soon

Fringer Nikon F to Fujifilm X Smar AF Adapter

Press Release

New feature of Fringer NF-FX adapter: LaCA correction

Fringer NF-FX (Nikon F mount to Fujifilm X mount) smart adapter will be released soon. Today we’d like to introduce an interesting feature of the adapter, i.e. LaCA correction.

LaCA, stands for lateral chromatic aberration, is resulting from a difference of image scale at different wavelength of red, green and blue light. LaCA causes colored fringes at high contrast edges of the image.

When we shoot RAW, LaCA can be easily removed by post processing. However, a key feature of Fujifilm cameras is their film simulation. In other words, we usually use the jpeg files directly out of the camera with few post processing. When using native X mount lenses, there is no problem since Fujifilm cameras will correct all the LaCA automatically. But when using adapted lenses, LaCA become a problem.

Fringer NF-FX has a built-in LaCA correction profile data base for all the lenses that have been tested and optimized (see this list). When shooting jpegs, the adapter will provide the LaCA correction profile of current lens to the camera automatically. The latter will use that profile to correct LaCA when generating jpeg pictures. Finally, user get a jpeg photo directly out of the camera which is LaCA free.

Please see the following example.

Fujifilm Managers Talk Film Simulations: Origins, Evolutions, Goals, Misunderstandings, Bold Classic Negative and Much More

The Japanese site dc.watch interviewed Fujifilm manager Kosuke Irie and Shinya Fujiwara.

They talk about film simulations in a lengthy, very detailed and technical way.

All in Japanese, which means we are in the hands of google translate. And sadly this does not always work out well.

I will share a summary for you down below, often just taken as google delivered it.

It will get nerdy… happy reading down below :)

Tokina ATX-M 23mmF1.4 and 33mmF1.4 Pre-Order Available Soon and Release on December 11

Back in March Tokina announced the release of three lenses for Fujifilm X mount, the Tokina atx-m 23mm f/1.4, the Tokina atx-m 33mm f/1.4 and the Tokina atx-m 56mm f/1.4.

Now, as reported by nokishita, the first two lenses will be announced very soon and start shipping on December 11. The lenses will be:

  • Tokina atx-m 23mm f/1.4
  • Tokina atx-m 33mm f/1.4

Viltrox vs Tokina: Same Same, but Different

We already discussed about the fact if the new Tokina lenses are just rebranded Viltrox lenses. Lots of things seem indeed to indicate that they are indeed just rebranded versions of the same lens.

However, there is a difference we should not overlook.

Viltrox started to release AF lenses for Fujifilm by reverse engineering the X mount AF lens protocols. There was no official cooperation with Fujifilm and we have reported in the past about some bugs with Viltrox lenses, that to be fair Viltrox usually worked hard on to fix, but that’s the downside of not having any direct access to the protocols.

That’s different with Tokina. In fact, shortly after Tokina announced its new three Fuji X mount lenses, Fujifilm made a statement that they opened their lens protocols and that Tokina is the first to profit from it.

By having access to Fuji’s AF lens protocols, it should be easier for Tokina to develop fast, stable and bug-free lenses that work smoothly with Fujifilm cameras and always stay up to date with Fuji’s latest autofocus algorithm changes.

I don’t know if in the meantime also Viltrox got access to Fuji’s AF lens protocols.

What I do hope, though, is that Sigma will. And there was already and official and totally public statement that Sigma made very recently, that gives us hope. Read more down below.

SIZE COMPARISON: Fujinon XF18mmF1.4 vs XF16mmF1.4 vs XF23mmF1.4

Just as we rumored, Fujifilm included the Fujinon XF18mmF1.4 on the official new X mount roadmap.

I took the technical sketch of the upcoming XF18mmF1.4 that Fujifilm showed us at the recent Fujifilm X summit and used it to compare its size to its closest internal f/1.4 competitors, the Fujinon XF16mm f/1.4 and the XF23mm f/1.4.

The result can be seen above.

Based on what Fujifilm provided us, we can say that the size will be basically identical to the one of the Fujinon XF16mm f/1.4.

If you want to see the size comparison between the Fujinon XF70-300mmF4-5.6 and other Fujinon lenses, check out this article.

SIZE COMPARISON: Fujinon XF70-300mmF4-5.6 vs XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 vs XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 vs XC50-230mmF4.5-6.7

One of the most my personal most pleasing surprises of yesterday’s Fujifilm X Summit, was to see the lovely Fujinon XF70-300mmF4-5.6.

It’s compact, it works with both, the 1.4x teleconverter and the 2x teleconverter and it is definitely a lens that I can see becoming a huge hit for Fujifilm.

Fujifilm showed some hands-on images yesterday at the X summit (all visible in our dedicated article), and they also shared some technical sketches.

I couldn’t resit my own curiosity, so I took the technical sketches and used it to compare it to other Fujinon lenses, more specifically to the.

You can see the results above.

Based on the size comparison, I tried to approximately measure the size of the Fujinon XF70-300mm f/4-5.6, and I saw that it is roughly 1.5 cm longer than the Fujinon XF55-200mm f/3.5-4.8.

Hence, according to this calculation, the Fujinon XF70-300mm f/4-5.6 is about 133 mm long.

Also, according calculations made by FR-reader Fujiste, it should have a 72mm filter size.

If you want to see all the hands-on images of the the Fujinon XF70-300mm f/4-5.6 mockups, check out this article here.
