Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 Review: It Performs Better than More Expensive Professional Lenses

Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4

I don’t know you, but I hate it when Fujiiflm announced gear, and then lets us wait 3 months to finally ship it.

This is the case with their “July” announcements. X-T2, XF200, XF8-16 and now XF16-80 and GF50 were all announced in July, but shipped only in much later, between September and November.

In case of the Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4, we still have to wait until the end of September, to finally see it shipping.

As a consequence, we are meager on independent third party reviews…. but a fellow FujiRumors has found one, and shared it with us!

The review with lots of high res samples comes from the Slovakian page ephoto, and here are their conclusions of the lens (google translated):

Fujinon XF16-80 / 4 R OIS WR filled a hole in Fujifilm’s portfolio. This is a lens that everyone who starts Fujifilm should buy and is not sorry to pay for a more versatile lens.

The aperture F4 makes it more suitable for outdoor use. In slightly poor lighting conditions, the photographer is assisted by effective optical stabilization. The scope of the lens allows you to comfortably shoot landscape, nature, architecture.

At the same time, he handles the details and does not fear portraits. When taking pictures in poor weather conditions, you will appreciate the seal. It is the ideal lens for trips, vacations, trips anywhere. The weight is only 440 g.

If you want to shoot with a single lens, this is him. I hope we will meet him, as it will be cost-effective with the X-T30, X-T3 and X-H1.

Personally, I find no mistake on the lens that would make sense to bother. In terms of parameters and price, it provides above-average user value and optically exceeds one of the more expensive professional lenses. Such a good and generally balanced zoom is not easy to see. There is no need to hesitate for a moment.

This Guy left Fujifilm for Sony A7III and then Switched Back to Fujifilm X – Read Why Here

Damiano is an event photographer, who switched from Fujifilm X to Sony A7III. However, after a season with the Sony, he decided to switch back to Fujifilm X-T3 and X-H1.

So why did he switch back?

He discusses his choice in his 21 minutes long Italian video, but you guys are lucky, because Italian is one of the 3 languages I manage better than English, so I make a summary of his video for you down below.

Three Fujifilm Cameras Registered, But When Will they Come? Time Span Between Fujifilm X/GFX Registrations and Announcement

Fujifilm has recently registered three cameras:

The inevitable question that pops up in the comments when this happens, is how long the time span is between registration of a camera and its announcement.

To answer that, I looked back to the past time span between registrations and announcements, and here is what we see:

  • 1 month = 4 cameras (X-T2, X-E3, X-T100, X-T30)
  • 2 months = 3 cameras (X-T20, X100F, XF10)
  • 3 months = 3 cameras (X-T3, GFX50R, GFX100)
  • 6 months = 1 camera (X-H1)

It’s clear that we usually get a camera between 1 and 3 months after registration (with exception of X-H1, which needed 6 months).

Clearly this would indicate of 3 cameras coming within November, although the X-H1 shows that a longer wait is not impossible, hence an announcement within February 2020 (6 months).

What could these cameras be?

The contact form on FujiRumors is open for any hint (thanks), and the comments for the wildest speculations :).

Fujifilm Registered a Third Camera with Code FF190003

Nokishita spotted that Fujifilm has registered a third camera, the FF190003 here.

So we now have a total of 3 registered cameras:

  • FF190001 = ?
  • FF190002 = X-Pro3
  • FF190003 = ?

Usually it needs a few months, for cameras to be announced after they have been registered.

3½ Reasons Why Fujifilm is Waiting so Long to Release the Fujifilm X100V

Fujifilm X100V

When I recently posted the huge Fujifilm camera release timeline, I made one single error, that thankfully you guys corrected in the comments.

I calculated, that the Fujifilm X100 series got a refresh every 2 years, which is absolutely correct. But then, based on that refresh cycle, I said that the X100V should come two years after the X100F (which was announced in January 2017).

But this would mean the Fujifilm X100V should have hit the market in January 2019, which evidently it has not. Our sources say it will come at some point in 2020.

Now, not to justify my error, but, well, I run FujiRumors 365 days a year non stop, and I wrote that particular article in a bar, drinking beer, while waiting for the rain to stop and finally go out shooting again with my X-E3, as you can see here. Well, at this point I’ll just say is that it rained a lot that day ;)

I apologize if I confused you guys, so I felt I need to address this in a dedicated article.

But also, this is a good opportunity to quickly discuss, why Fujifilm is waiting so long, to finally give us a successor to the Fujifilm X100F.

Down below 3½ reasons for that:

Adobe Now Officially Fully Supports Fujifilm GFX100

Just five days ago here, Adobe added film simulation support for Fujifilm GFX100. But as you can see from the screenshot, at that time Adobe still marked the Fujifilm GFX100 support as preliminary.

Yesterday Adobe removed the “preliminary support” notice, so we can finally say that we officially have full Fujifilm GFX100 support.

The Fuji GFX100 itself remains widely out of stock, but there are quite some that had their pre-order shipped and they are all sharing diligently at our massive Fujifilm GFX facebook group.

Not Only Fujifilm X-Pro3: One more Fujifilm Camera Coming in 2019? FF190001 Registered

New Fujifilm Camera

Just recently we reported, that Fujifilm registered a camera with the code name FF190002.

We know that the Fujifilm X-Pro3 is coming. But now nokishita spotted a further registration. It’s the FF190001 (see below).

Usually the time span between registration and announcement is about 1 to 4 months, so we can assume that one more Fujifilm camera is coming in 2019, in addition to the Fujifilm X-Pro3.

I know, given the massive rebate on the Fujifilm X-H1 (which can be purchased for as little as $299 if bundled with the XF8-16), there will be the whole internet world saying this is the Fujifilm X-H1S or Fujifilm X-H2.

Guys, listen to me: it’s not an X-H1 successor! 100% sure. Trust me! It is something else ;). And whoever tells you it’s the X-H2, is just clickbaiting you.

It is also not the Fujifilm X100V, since that one will come out sometimes in 2020 only, so that’s definitely too early to be registered already.

  • FF190001 = ?
  • FF190002 = X-Pro3

So, if you buy the X-H1 today, don’t worry about the FF190001 or FF190002 being its successor.
