Laowa 17mm f4 Zero-D for Fujifilm GFX Coming Soon for $1,249

Laowa 17mm f4 Zero-D GFX

The wait was longer than expected, but it seems that the Laowa 17mm f/4 Zero-D GFX will come soon.

It will be priced at $1,249 and down below the google translated version from the Chinese site xitek.

The Laowa 17mmF4 lens is a super wide-angle zero-distortion lens tailored for Fuji medium format players. The equivalent full frame size is 13.5mm and the field of view angle is 113°, allowing Fuji medium format players to experience a wider picture without switching. Expected listing price of $1,249

When I visited Venus Optics at Photokina 2018, they told me the Laowa 17mm f/4 for GFX will come in December 2018, later on they told me it will come in March 2019. Well, now let’s hope that the wait is really soon over!

Also, some specs have changed now as opposed to the one displayed at Photokina. The aperture blades now seem to be 5 instead of 7 (a typo?).

For your convenience, I have translated the latest specs list appeared today in China and compared it to the ones I photographed at the Venus Optics booth at Photokina 2018.

Brought to you first, here on FujiRumors ;)

Viltrox 23mm, 33mm and 56mm f/1.4 Autofocus Lenses Coming for Fujifilm X Mount

Viltrox AF Lenses

Viltrox recently launched the first reverse-engineered Fujifilm X autofocus lens, the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 AF.

Now fellow FR-reader Michael (instagram, twitter, youtube) informed me that more lenses will come. In fact, Viltrox said:

We will have more choices on focal length like 23mm/33mm/56mmf1.4. Maybe some of them can come out in October this year.

It looks like competition is coming for the (currently discounted) Fujinon XF23mm f/1.4, XF 35mm f/1.4 and XF 56mm f/1.2.

As we reported here, the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 is on and about to become the best-selling third-party lens for Fujifilm X here on FujiRumors. So there is space for third-party glass in Fuji X shooters’ bags, and I wish Sigma, Tamron and Tokina would join the X mount, too.

The issue? Fujifilm does not open their protocols (except for Zeiss and the Zeiss Touit X mount trinity), hence companies have to laboriously reverse-engineer the lens firmware to make it work on X mount.

Sigma has flirted with X series customers, saying that they would love to provide lenses for us, if Fujifilm discloses their protocols. However, Fujifilm replied that this won’t happen.

  • fujirumors.com – Sigma CEO: “Fujifilm customers would be our ideal customer, but Fujifilm does not disclose their protocols
  • fujirumors.com – Fuji CEO: “Fujifilm does need to share X mount protocols with third-parties, since we offer already lots of glass. But if third-parties reverse-engineer AF lenses for X mount, that’s good from a customers’ point of view

Fujifilm makes more money with lenses, than with camera bodies, so it is understandable that they are reluctant to open their mount to third parties.

On the other hand, I believe that with an open X mount, Fujifilm would grow its customer base faster than it is currently happening.

Last but not least, some rumors we shared last year:

  • read here: SIGMA Needs Bigger Fujifilm Market Share, TOKINA Designed X Glass Already but Stopped by Royalties, TAMRON is Vague

Top Lenses

  1. XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8
  2. XF 50mm f/2
  3. XF 23mm f/1.4

A revival for the good old XF 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8, a lens I own and love, and I am sure people who purchased it will be happy. However, my sample is not used that much anymore, since the XF 18-135mm joined my lens line-up.

Top Third Party Lenses

  1. Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 AF
  2. Samyang 12mm f/2
  3. Meike Neewer 35mm F1.2

The Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 autofocus lens for Fujifilm X enjoyed a positive start amongst the FujiRumors community. Second the evergreen Samyang 12mm f/2.Third is the ultra-cheap Meike Neewer 35mm f/1.2.

Top Cameras

  1. Fujifilm X-T3
  2. Fujifilm X100F
  3. Fujifilm X-Pro2

Back in March, the new low retail price on Fujifilm X-H1 pushed Fuji’s only IBIS X series camera on the top of ranking. Sadly it was just a short moment of glory. It has now fallen back. The Fujifilm X-T3 takes back the throne, followed by the Fujifilm X100F and X-Pro2.

Top GFX Gear

The price is attractive, and the Fujifilm GFX 50R sales continue better than the Fujifilm GFX 50S sales, despite the latter having a new lower retail price.

Fujifilm Manager: “70% of GFX Users Came from Full Frame. X-H and X-T Line Will Both Evolve in Future” – Hope for Fujifilm X-H2

Fujifilm GFX100

Fujifilm Channel X has published an 45 minutes interview with Fujifilm managers from Fujikina 2019. See the video above (sadly not so good audio quality) and a summary down below.

Fujifilm GFX 100: B&H Photo, AmazonUS, Adorama, Focuscamera, CalumetDE, ParkcamerasUK, JessopsUK, PCHstore

The Market

  • Fujifilm GFX100 market is not the traditional medium format market
  • GFX 50 already aimed to amateur customers in addition to high-end photography
  • 70% of Fujifilm GFX 50R/S buyers come from full frame. So not only people switch from Hasselblad and Phase One to GFX, but also FF users
  • the GFX system expanded the larger format market, and GFX100 will continue to expand it
  • GFX100 should expand market also towards movie shooting photographer

The GFX100 strenghts

  • compared to full frame, GFX system has better image quality in terms of ISO performance, dynamic range and resolution
  • traditionally large format camera (including film) are big and for tripod use, but GFX system is smaller, and GFX100 has also IBIS, hence less need for tripod
  • GFX100 is about autofocus, mobility, quality

EVF

  • Fujifilm GFX 50 EVF works on GFX100, but GFX100 EVF on GFX50 will not work

Tony Northrup Fujifilm GFX 50R (not Error-Free) Review: “Fujifilm GFX 100 Will Fix All Our Concerns”

Fujifilm GFX

Tony Northrup took a Fujifilm GFX 50R for his Barcelona trip and now published a review about it (video above).

I will sum it up for you below, but I would quickly like to correct a few errors he made.

He says the GFX sensor surface area is 30% bigger than Full Frame, but it is actually 70% bigger. This is not correct, and Tony makes the MF sensor sound smaller than it really is.

He complaints that there is only one lens with OIS, but there are actually 3 lenses with OIS, the GF 250mm F4, GF 120mmF4 and GF 100-200mm f/5.6.

Since we like percentages, basically Tony claims that about 12% of all GF lenses have OIS, when reality is that almost 40% have OIS.

Rather big errors, I hope Tony will correct soon, and I wonder how they could even slip into his review in the first place.

For the rest, you can read his findings below.

  • not a sports camera, not good at tracking
  • not a video camera
  • great landscape camera, but Fuji needs more lenses, and more astrophotography lenses
  • decent walk around camera
  • no huge difference in IQ compared to FF
  • soon GFX 100 will be here with IBIS, and should address all concerns they have with GFX 50R
  • corner placement of viewfinder is great
  • does not give the joy, that Fujifilm X-T3 gives him
  • small flat buttons
  • grip to small for big medium format lenses
  • screen is small compared to overall size of camera
  • design of Hasselblad X1D is better
  • eye detection AF is not accurate
  • sensor has 30% more surface area
  • if you crop to standard 35mm aspect ration, the surface area advantage is almost gone as well as image quality difference
  • Cropping 8×10 gives about 50% more surface area
  • he complaints that it has not IBIS and only 1 lens has OIS
  • Fujifilm GFX has much better lenses than Hasselblad X1D
  • Sony A7rIII is better overall camera
  • Fujifilm GFX 50R is a specialized camera

GEAR TALK DETOX: Fujifilm GFX Monochrome Edition with Valentino Rossi and More

Gear Talk Detox

The next few weeks will be gear talk at its highest power, here on FujiRumors.

The reason?

The massive Fujifilm GFX100 announcement on May 23!

So I thought that, before we dive into specs, pixel peeping, 400% magnifications and all the rest, we take one last deep breath into the art of photography by sharing some of the most voted images.

The only problem?

Our massive 21,000+ members strong Fujifilm GFX facebook group is very prolific and shares tons of images.

In order to make it easier for you digest, I decided to focus this part of the image roundup on monochrome images, and there will be another one later on in colors.
