Camera Market Share 2024: Fujifilm Leads Mirrorless Growth — But Budget DSLRs Still Outsell Fujifilm (or Why We Need the X-T30 III)

Nikkei has published the global shipment numbers of digital cameras sold in 2024. The numbers are based on data from CIPA and JEITA and have been reported by the Japanese website dclife.

Here are the numbers:

Mirrorless + DSLR Camera Shipments

2024

  • Canon — 2.84M units (46.6%)
  • Sony — 1.63M units (26.8%)
  • Nikon — 830k units (13.6%)
  • Fujifilm — 490k units (8%)
  • Panasonic — 160k units (2.6%)
  • OM Digital — 130k units (2.1%)
  • Pentax — 10k untis (0.2%)

Note that the Canon DSLR cameras are still outselling Fujifilm mirrorless camera sales (790,000 vs 490,000 units). Most of those DSLR cameras are cheap Canon Rebel & Co cameras.

What this tells us: there are lots of people who still enter a camera/electronic store and want an “affordable camera that takes better pictures than my phone“.

Right now, Fujifilm is falling short in this segment: the X-E5 and X-T50 are priced too high, while the X-M5 lacks a viewfinder — a feature many still consider essential for a “serious” camera. The upcoming Fujiflm X-T30 III, however, could be exactly the model to fill that gap — provided Fujifilm keeps it in the true entry-level range, which will largely depend on the features they choose to include.

Mirrorless Cameras Shipments

Mirrorless is growing for all brands, but Fujifilm has experienced the strongest growth of all.

The chart here is probably for interchangable lens cameras, because dclife has a separate ranking for “compact cameras” like the Fujifilm X100VI and Ricoh GR series. But maybe it includes also the compact cameras, we don’t know that.

Compact Cameras Shipments

Fujifilm has increased its shipments from 50,000 units to 130,000 units. And the number could have been significntly higher if cameras like the X100VI were not in short supply in 2024. It is not known if also Instax cameras are included in this data.

Only Ricoh and Fujifilm are able to grow in the compact camera segment.

Fujifilm X-T40/X-T30III: Finally Closing the Gap?

One of the critiques Fujifilm gets is that they have a confusing camera lineup with too many lines.

The Fujifilm X-T30III or X-T40 just fueled again this criticism, but I think this time they don’t deserve it.

First things first: Fujifilm has indeed likely canceled 6 X series lines already (or even 7, if we consider X70 and XF10 not part of the same line):

So we have a total of possibly six canceled lines.

And how many lines has Fujifilm introduced?

Well, 2 new lines have been introduced recently: Fujifilm X half and the Fujifilm X-T50,

Yes, also the Fujifilm X-T50 is a “new line”, because as we told you in this rumor, it does not belong to the X-T10, X-T20, X-T30 line since Fujifilm will launch a dedicated successor for that line (X-T40/X-T30III) in 2025.

And actually there will also be a third totally new line soon, and that camera is already listed at BHphoto here.

In short: Fujifilm has axed more lines than it has created new ones.

With all that said, I think launching the Fujifilm X-T40/X-T30III makes totally sense.

Why?

Well, because Fujifilm’s entry level line has basically been axed (except X-M line) and their other lower-end to mid-range models got an overall specs upgrade with a consequantial significant price increase (X-E5 and X-T50).

At this point in time, Fujifilm has no true entry level camera with viewfinder and that’s a problem if you ask me.

But how could a Fujifilm X-T30III/X-T40 look like?

Speculations (NOT RUMOR)

  • my realistic scenario: X-T30 II body with 5th generation processor and latest firmware
  • my hope scenario: X-T30 II body but with X-T100 alike unique screen mechanism – we reported here
  • my dream scenario: X-T50 body with 4th generation 26MP sensor

Since I think that price matters when it comes to the Fujifilm X-T40 or X-T30 III, I believe they’ll go for the first scenario I mentioned above.

Fujifilm X-T40/X-T30III: A Chance to Revive Fujifilm’s Best LCD Screen Mechanism?

Fujifilm once had a brilliant idea: put a smart LCD screen mechanism into this Fujifilm camera.

But despite being quite brilliant, Fujifilm used that screen only once on this underrated camera and never again.

Is there any hope for a revival?

Well, so far I have no info about a return of that screen, but I would certainly hope that the Fujifilm X-T40 or X-T30III will feature that screen again. Even though my best guess is that it will use the same body of either the X-T30II or X-T50.

The unique tilt/flip screen was first incorporated on the Fujifilm X-T100. It worked similar – but not identical – to the one of the Sony A7rV.

[UPDATED] Fujifilm Autofocus Feedback: Mostly Positive and The Curious Case of the X-T3 (or the Root of All Autofocus Issues?)

Time for another autofocus test roundup (see part 1 here).

I will include several videos, including the one of Edvard, who shares interesting findings about the X-T3 which potentially shows where the AF issues with Fujifilm started.

Summing Up All Videos – tl;dr version

  • everybody agrees that now autofocus is workable again, even Edvard
  • some got better results than others, I guess based on use case, testing scenario and settings
  • Adan in “video 7” for example is very impressed and applauds Fujifilm for the improvement and says he is confident to use it now for his professional video work
  • others aknowledge the improvement, say it is something you can rely on for work, but highlight it is not yet at the level of top tier AF of other brands
  • Edvard is the most critical and I will share his findings below (with some interesting findings)
  • UPDATE: Edvard published a second video, which I share below with his main findings
  • there is still room for improvement (and looking at Edvard’s video some of the improvements could be achieved by using parts of the algorithm used on X-T3 firmware 3.00/3.30)
  • and finally… Thierry in Video 1 has simply one of the most beautiful settings and light to record a video (I know it’s unreleated, but I appreciate it when photographers try to give us also a great scenery ;))

My take:

Having a usable and workable autofocus is nice. This takes away stress for those, who rely on autofocus for work.

And that it is workable has been now confirmed by the very same people, who made very harsh videos against Fujfilm in the last few months. So there is no bias there.

My fear:

Most reviewers seem to be overall pleased and happy. But the error the Fujifilm engineers could do now, is to consider the autofocus chapter closed. There is still work to do, and maybe some feedback they get today from these videos can help them to improve further.

Below I will share a couple of videos. I could ignore the postiive feedback, but I think it has just as much reason to exist as negative feedback.

What FujiRumors can do is just to share it all to give you the most comprehensive overview possible.

My personal experience?

Well, none. Because I am still waiting for my X-T5 to get the update, but my X-T5 has so far shot 0 seconds of video in its entire life so I would not be able to compare it to how it was before.

What the April firmware broke, though, was the stills side of it. It did fail on me when shooting still standing people. But the June firmware fixed that, so now I have no issue in taking family pictures.

But don’t ask me for video… my X-T5 does not even know it has this option.

Fujifilm Firmware Updates for X-T4, X-T3, X-S10, X-T30II and GFX50SII

Fujifilm has released firmware updates for Fujifilm X-T4, X-T3, X-S10, X-T30II and GFX50SII.

And because I know some of you might ask where the promised Kaizen firmware is (or when it will come):

Fujifilm X-T4 Discontinued (in Addition to X-Pro3, X-E4, X-T30II, GFX50R, GFX100)

Fellow FR-readers saw it coming already.

The Fujifilm X-T4 had been removed from the Japanese Fujifilm store back in September 2022 and also stores overseas started to mark it as discontinued.

Well, now it’s also time for BHphoto & Co to remove the Fujifilm X-T4 from their store, hence it’s now marked as discontinued also there.

The Fujifilm X-T4 joins lots of other Fujifilm cameras that are already marked as discontinued, such as the Fujifilm X-E4 (we reported back in March here), the X-T30II (we reported here), the Fujifilm X-Pro3 (we reported here), as well as the Fujifilm GFX50R and the Fujifilm GFX100.

But, trust me guys, don’t expect a Fujifilm X-Pro4, Fujifilm X-T40, Fujifilm X-E5, Fujifilm GFX50R replacement and Fujifilm GFX100 replacement to drop all on May 24, just because they are now discontinued.
