Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 Quick First Impressions and Comparison

Mattias Burling started its coverage about the Viltrox 33mm f/1.4.

He just shared his very first impression about the lens. Here they are:

  • all metal lens hood
  • pretty small but long. Would feel a bit long on something like an X-E camera
  • it can’t cover full frame, which is why size is contained (compared to the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8, which also fits on full frame cameras, hence the lens is bigger than it would be, if designed only for APS-C)
  • autofocus: it’s good. Single AF is quick and snappy. It’s much more quiet than the XF35mm f/1.4.
  • continuous AF seems to work well too. At least in bright conditions, which is where he tested it
  • aperture ring is step-less. He’d have preferred 1/3 stop clicks on aperture ring. It does not feel very smooth, unlike the focus ring, which is smooth like butter.
  • nice image quality. Fringing is under control but present. Vignetting behaves very well. Decently sharp at f/1.4 and of course much sharper when stopped down
  • it can easily catch haze when shooting strongly backlit subjects (also Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 behaves like that)

He then compares it to the Fujinon GF63mm f/2.8 mounted on the Fujifilm GFX 50R as well as to the cheap Canon 50mm. The Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 was the fastest focusing lens in the test.

The Viltrox 33mm f/1.4 AF is the second AF lens for Fujifilm X by Viltrox. Other two lenses, the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 and Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 will follow later on.

We remind you that Tokina will also launch a 23mm/1.4, 33mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.4 lens in 2020, as we reported here. They look like re-branded Viltrox lenses. It will be interesting to see, though, if also the Tokina lenses will have a clickless aperture ring, too.

Hence, today, in this Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 roundup I chose to highlight some aspects of the lens, that are not really that good.

And yet, despite not being a perfect lens, those who review the Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 still end up recommending it, as a great all rounder lens.

At the end, it’s all about finding the right balance, keeping in mind what’s the target group of a certain lens. And I guess in order ot keep size, weight and price down, Fujifilm had to rely more on digital correction in the case of this lens.

How to Save & Restore Camera Settings

Every now and then I get emails from fellow Fujifilm X Shooters, complaining that their camera settings get completely deteleted. There are several reasons this can happen:

  • after firmware update (it should not happen, but it can)
  • discharging of the small build-in internal battery: happens if you leave your camera too long without battery. In case of new cameras, give it a long first charge, or settings will delete shortly after battery has been removed

So the first thing you can do, is to avoid the errors we mentioned above.

And yet, sometimes it’s not a user error (see firmware update), so you better have a Plan B in case all your settings get lost, and in our case, our Plan B is called Fuji X Acquire.

And since just right after the Fujifilm X-T3 firmware update, some FR-readers couldn’t find the back-up feature, I thought I share a quick guide on how to save & restore your Fujifilm camera settings using Fujifilm X Acquire.

The Belgian shop PCHstore shared the first images of the Fujinon GF100-200mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR, as well as a first sample shot with crop. A selection of the images can be found down below.

Back in September, Fujifilm announced the new Fujinon GF lens roadmap, which included the GF100-200mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR, GF50mmF3.5 R LM WR and GF45-100mmF4 R LM OIS WR.

Fujinon Roadmap Lenses

For the second time today (first time here), I had to find a way through the security check and get into the Photokina halls. Stealthy like a ninja, I made it again.

This time I was armed with my wonderful Fujifilm X-E3 and I snapped some pictures of the upcoming Fujinon lenses.

I apologize for the quality, since I tried to make my way through a couple of Fujifilm managers and an angry lady, who told me “can I help you” in a tone that clearly ment “p*** off from here“.

So time was limited, the conditions difficult, I could not touch the lenses, but I made it… somehow.

And when nobody was watching, I quickly grabbed a Fujifilm GFX 50R and made a super quick hands on video.

Back to the lenses:

  • XF33mmF1.0: Yes, it’s rather big, especially compared to the Mitakon 35mm F0.95 (manual focus only). I guess Fujifilm wants to make this the ultimate lens in terms of image quality, and still offer a fast AF motor. Filter size 77
  • XF16mmF2.8: Very small. Fits perfect in the Fujicron lineup with the XF23mmF2, XF35mmF2 and XF50mmF2. Filter size 49
  • XF16-80mmF4: This lens, my friends, will fall into the hands of many fellow X-shooters for travels. Filter size 72

I’m Leaving Capture One for DxO PhotoLab 9: Here is Why!

In 2019 I wrote an article about leaving Lightroom for Capture One.

Well, here we are, six years later, and this time I’m announcing another change: I’ll be leaving Capture One for DxO PhotoLab 9.

First off, let me be clear: my time with Capture One has been excellent. It’s a fantastic piece of software, and I never once regretted switching from Lightroom. If you’re sticking with Capture One, you’re still making a solid choice.

Why am I leaving?

Before we start, it’s worth remembering that Capture One supports Fujifilm cameras because Fujifilm pays them to. That’s part of their original agreement. So if you’re happily editing your Fujifilm files in Capture One, thank Fujifilm, not Capture One. And that’s totally fine — just business as usual.

What really bothered me, though, was Capture One’s handling of the free Express version. They announced its removal, but in reality, they didn’t actually discontinue it for Fujifilm shooters — they simply hide and renamed it.

Instead of openly saying “Capture One Express is closing, but Fujifilm users still have access to a free basic version,” they didn’t tell us about it and made it complicated to find. The probable goal: push Express users into upgrading to the paid version. Luckily, on FujiRumors we figured out the not-so-intuitive way to still access the new “Fujifilm RAW Converter (FRC)” and shared it with the community.

Legally, it’s all fine. I assume (but that’s just a guess of mine) their contract with Fujifilm might oblige them to offer a free basic version, and if so, they would have technically respected that. But from a customer-relations point of view, it felt a bit disingenuous. A little transparency and clarity would have gone a long way.

The turning point

Now that I own the Fujifilm X-E5, I had to make a choice. As a perpetual license holder, I would need to pay Capture One full price just to get support for my new camera. At that point, I asked myself: do I double down on Capture One, or finally make the switch to something else?

And the answer was clear: it’s time for DxO.

Also consider: while Capture One won’t support the X-E5 in older standalone versions, DxO added X-E5 support also the PhotoLab 7 and 8.

So this makes me confident that if one day I’ll treat myself with a Fujifilm X-E6 or X-T7 or so, I guess I won’t be forced to pay the upgrade to DxO PhotoLab 10/11 to use its RAW files on DxO.

Why DxO?

Over the past two years, DxO has impressed me more and more. The new PhotoLab 9 is a powerful, feature-rich editor — with great tools like AI Masking. I’ll be pairing it with FilmPack 8, which unlocks all Fujifilm film simulation profiles.

On top of that, DxO PureRAW 5.3 now supports DeepPRIME XD3 for all X-Trans cameras, delivering outstanding noise reduction and detail retention.

So, from now on all my editing will be done with PhotoLab9.
