Pentax 645Z Second Best Sensor Ever Tested after Hasselblad X1D… Fujifilm GFX 50S Test Coming Soon?

Pentax 645Z DxO Sensor Test

Back in October we reported that DxOmark said they will now test medium format cameras… and they kept their word.

The first camera they tested was the Hasselblad X1D, which immediatly jumped to the very top of the DxO Ranking, making it the best sensor they have ever tested (score 102). You can read their X1D report here.

Price and Specs: Pentax 645Z / Fujifilm GFX 50S / Hasselblad X1D

Now the full test of Pentax 645Z is also online and it confirms their preliminary results shared a few years ago. It gets a total score of 101. Check out the Pentax 645Z DxO sensor test here.

It’s clear from our testing that the Pentax 645Z’s sensor is extremely capable, coming within a whisper of matching the performance of the Hasselblad X1D sensor (our highest-scoring sensor to date). The 645Z’s high dynamic range and color sensitivity make it ideally suited for capturing the types of scenes that are traditionally favored by medium-format photographers — landscapes, weddings, portraits, and still lifes (commercial). Medium-format shooters are interesting capturing images with lots of detail, low noise, and smooth tonal gradations.

In addition, the Pentax 645Z controls noise well, making it suitable for use in relatively low light, and perhaps expanding the range of conditions in which medium-format cameras are traditionally used.

It’s interesting to compare the Pentax 645Z sensor against the Nikon D850’s because although the former is about 1.7x larger, it’s also around three years older. While the 645Z beats the Nikon sensor in our tests, the Nikon comes closer than you might expect, given the size difference. If Sony made a medium-format sensor with the same design as the D850, it would beat the sensors in both the Pentax 645Z and the Hassleblad X1D-50c.”

Now only the Fujifilm GFX 50S is missing, and let’s hope the test follows soon.

Fuji’s Secret Test

As I reported here, before making the final decision to go Medium Format, Fujifilm made a secret test, using a Pentax 645Z file. The results of this test convinced them to go Medium Format. What exactly happened and what did they test? A trusted source told us everything here :)

Kai Wong Fujifilm GFX 50S Review

Kai Wong tested the Fujiiflm GFX 50S.

  • lightweight
  • viewfinder is massive
  • he loves the way the GFX operates
  • film simulations are pretty damn good
  • focus speed is right, a lot faster than show models back at Photokina
  • focus in low light is not so consistent and quick, though
  • noise is low, at ISO 12,800 you get usable files, but noise is visible
  • maybe a bit too niche
  • fantastic landscape camera

Fujifilm X and GFX Deals Now in Even More EU Countries

I have received really a lot of emails, with questions regarding the Fuji EU deals that should have started on October 12. Fact is, they indeed started on October 12, but only in some EU countries.

I’m glad to inform you, that other EU countries just started the deals on November 1, such as Netherlands, Belgium and more. So you will find the deals also in stores like PCHstore now.

Fujifilm is rather slow with updating their dedicated Fuji X EU Promotion page (although, as spotted by VatArt Photo, some countries have now been updated), so it might be best practice to contact your local dealer and ask them directly. The rebates will be in line with what we see all over the world already.

You can support FujiRumors by purchasing any of the discounted X-gear using the affiliate links below.

EU: AmazonDE, Calumentphoto DEWexUK, ParkCaemerasUK, AmazonUKPCHstore, AmazonITA, AmazonFR, AmazonESP
USA: BHphotoFocusCamera, Adorama, AmazonUS
CAN: AmazonCA

Fujifilm USA has also huge deals on GFX and X gear, and BHphoto even offers a secret extra discount (up to $1,550) on the Fujifilm GFX. All details here.

Reminder: Fujifilm Europe also offers huge rebates on Fujifilm GFX gear. Check them out below.

Steelsring Canon EF to Fujifilm GFX and C645-GFX Smart Adapter Firmware 1.2 Available

Today Steelsring released a firmware udpate for its Canon EF to Fujifilm GFX and also 645-GFX smart adapters.

Ver. 1.2 removes Fujifilm’s lens corrections profiles.

“It’s my honor to announce the immediate available of EF/GFX 1.2b and CONTAX645/GFX 1.1b firmware update, both of them have a common feature: Original Lens Correction Profile inherited from FUJI lens emulation was finally removed successfully and completely. For more information, please click here.”

I remind you that also Fringer updated it’s C645-GFX smart adapter yesterday, as reported in the Fujifilm GFX roundup here. Also in this case, Fujifilm lens correction is disabled.

Fringer Firmware Update

FRINGER Press Release: “V2.3 firmware is avaliable now. It disables in-camera lens correction which let to severe distortion when connecting Contax 645 lenses to GFX50s using Fringer smart adapter. Please download the firmware v2.3 and upgrade your adapter according to the steps in user manual (section 6). […]

As you know, Fujifilm lenses largely depend on software corrections. Whatever the file format you use, i.e. JPG or RAW, you cannot switch it off. Even in the view finder you can only see the after-correction results. Since currently all the smart adapters in the market are impersonating a G mount lens, the in camera lens correction severely disturbed the adapted lenses’ output.

Now, we totally solved the problem and integrated the solution in the firmware ver2.3. After upgrading your adapter, the Fujifilm’s lens correction would be disabled in the view finder and the JPG or RAW files the camera produces.

Fujifilm GFX and X Series Deals – Save Up to $1,550 with Secret Deal at BHphoto

The Fujinon XF16mmF1.4 is now $100 off and currently the best selling XF lens at BHphoto

The future of the Deals

The Fujifilm GFX deals are very good, especially the secret GFX deal on BHphoto, where you can save up to $1,550 (instead of “just” $1,000 as officially listed by Fujifilm and other stores).

But why isn’t Fujifilm offering the same huge deal also on the X-system?

Well, we better get used to it. Only a few years ago, hardly anyone owned Fujifilm X, and Fujifilm had to offer terrific deals to “convince” people to buy into the X system. But now, that Fuji X has become popular, there is simply no real need to launch such agressive deals anymore.

Hence, deals on X-system have become more rare, and when they come, like now, they will be less amazing than in the past.

And yet… you can still save up to $200 on X-gear…

… which is still better than a punch in the face ;)

First Sony A7rIII Vs. Fujifilm GFX 50S Vs. Nikon D850 Vs. Canon 5D MK IV Comparison

Fujifilm GFX 50S Vs. Sony A7RIII

So it happened, Sony just dropped another Full Frame camera, the brand new Sony A7RIII (price and specs at BHphoto, Adorama, AmazonUS, FocusCamera).

As to expect, now all possible comparisons will appear on the web, and we have already a first one at imaging-resource, comparing the Sony A7rIII with the Fujifilm GFX 50S, the Nikon D850 and the Canon 5DMKIV.

The results of the 42MP on the Sony A7RIII are, as to expect, impressive and promising. The Fujifilm GFX 50s, Nikon D850 and Sony A7rIII seem to be clearly superior to the Canon 5D MK IV.

The A7R III has a crispness to the blues in the eye that the other two seem to lack, resulting in a sort of grey overtone from both the Nikon and the Fuji. What may be the most impressive is how well the new Sony FE 24-105 f/4 hangs with Nikon’s new 24-70mm and Fuji’s 63mm. [Note: the Canon had the EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM]

Due to the RAW profile for the Sony A7R III not yet being available, we are comparing JPEG images. The Nikon D850 image was converted from RAW with ACR default settings

And here is the EXIF data for the images (shot on a tripod, all shot at 50mm):

  • Fujifilm GFX 50S: 1/20th, F5, ISO250, SOOC Jpeg – see here
  • Sony A7RIII: 1/40th, F5, ISO250, SOOC Jpeg – see here
  • Canon 5DMKIV: 1/40th, F5, ISO250, SOOC Jpeg – see here
  • Nikon D850: 1/40th, F5, ISO250, converted from RAW with ACR default settings – see here

As FR-readers noted, the strange pattern in the eyes is very likely caused by the model’s color contact lenses.

Please notice that

  • the Fujifilm GFX was shot at 1/20th of a second, whereas the other three cameras at 1/40th.
  • the Fujifilm GFX was shot at F5 in Medium Format, which is faster than F5 in FF, so it had shallower DOF
  • the Fujifilm GFX could be slightly out of focus, just as the Canon 5D MK IV
  • the Nikon D850 is a RAW file convertet in Adobe, all others are JPEG
  • eye AF on the Sony A7RIII works great for sure

I’m looking forward to more comparisons, maybe in a more controlled enviroment with all cameras at the same settings (a classical lab test), once Adobe supports Sony A7RIII RAW files.

With that said, go to imaging-resource here and check out their comparison.

Hasselblad X1D Best Sensor Ever Tested by DxOMark… and Fujifilm GFX 50S might Score Even Better?

Just recently we reported that DxOmark said they will now test medium format cameras.

The Pentax 645Z, which features the same sensor of the Fujifilm GFX 50S and the Hasselblad X1D, had a prelimiary score of 101.

Now the full Hasselblad X1D test is out, and it beats every record, with a score of 102. You can read it here:

The Hasselblad X1D-50c reaches new heights for image quality, achieving the highest DxOMark score of 102 points for any commercially-available sensor we’ve tested.

The X1D-50c excels in all three of our measurement categories, achieving either the top-ranked or a podium position result in each. At base ISO, the X1D-50c offers outstanding color depth (Portrait score) of 26.2 bits and a dynamic range (Landscape score) of 14.8 EV. In low light, the X1D-50c achieves the highest-ranked low-light ISO (Sports score) we’ve tested to date (4489 ISO).

Where the X1D-50c truly excels is for Low-Light ISO (Sports score), however. Achieving a top score of ISO 4489, it’s the best-performing sensor in low light that we’ve tested. This is primarily due to the larger surface area the medium-format sensor offers, so it isn’t surprising the X1D-50c outperforms physically-smaller full-frame sensors such as the 42.4Mp Sony A7R II, as well as sensors with a greater pixel pitch, such as the 12.2p Sony A7s.

That said, while its image quality is up there with the best, it’s not significantly better than other super high-resolution full-frame sensors, such as the Nikon D850 DSLR or the Sony A7R II, except in low light.

Not bad, considering that the 50 MP sensor in the X1D (and GFX) is acutally quite old. Sony already showed the new 100MP BSI Medium Format sensor, which will for sure set a new benchmark and very likely be the core of the Fujifilm GFX 100S.

It will be interesting to see how the Fujifilm GFX 50S will score (if DxO will ever test it), since it’s true that it has the same sensor of the Pentax 645Z and Hasselblad X1D, but Fujifilm has fine tuned the 50MP sensor by customizing the microlenses in front of the sensor and optimizing the silicon process. This should give even better results.
