Size Comparisons: Fujinon XF33mmF1.4 vs XF35mmF1.4 vs XF35mmF2 vs XF23mmF1.4II vs XF23mmF1.4 vs XF23mmF2

Camerasize has added the brand new Fujionn XF33mmF1.4 R LM WR and XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR. Hence you can now compare it to the other lenses in that focal range, the legendary Fujinon XF35mmF1.4 R and the much loved XF35mmF2 R WR as well as the original XF23mmF1.4 R (which was my trusty workhorse at the wedding I shot) and the XF23mmF2 R WR.

And just FYI, in case you wonder how accurate my leaked size comparison was, check out our article here. I’d say spot on!

In any case, lots of choices for Fujifilm X shooters in this range now. And that’s always a good thing.

My Thoughts on the September 2 Announcements and What Would You Like Fujifilm to Surprise You With Tomorrow?

So, very soon, on September 2 at 9AM New York time, Fujifilm will have a major announcement day.

The gear that will surely come is this one:

But as you know, X summit can always contain surprises that have never been rumored before.

So the question is, what would you like to get surprised with on September 2?

And just briefly, my quick thoughts on the gear to be announced tomorrow.

  • Fujifilm GFX50SII

Great move. Using the same design of GFX100S saves tons of R&D. Making GFX more affordable is of crucial importance. If there is the AF boost Fujifilm promises, then this will be a big hit. But as I wrote on my GFX100S hands on, retro vintage dials are just more fun for me to use, so I hope Fujifilm will also continue to give us different options in terms of form factor.

  • GF35-70mmF4.5-5.6

All good on specs (and really lovely from the leaked images). As I wrote already, it fixes the true anomaly in the G mount lens system. However, also here, I love aperture rings. This one has none. So I’ll stick with my GF32-64mmF4.

  • Fujifilm X-T30II

After the X-T30II specs leaked, some said that the X-T30II is slightly bigger than the original X-T30. But no, it is not. It’s exactly the same body size. The X-T30II is more or less just a firmware update as the Fujifilm X-E2S was for the Fujfiilm X-E2. The best news around this camera, is that we now can hope for major X-T30 firmware update, as also the X-E2 got the same firmware feature of the X-E2s at some point.

  • Fujinon XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR and XF33mmF1.4 R LM WR

Faster autofocus (linear motor), better build (weather sealing), capable to resolve more megapixel (for future higher megapixel cameras). This was not only a good move by Fujifilm, but a necessary one. You can read the full specs for both lenses here. Especially considering how popular these two focal lengths are, Fujifilm had to release some absolute stunners. And that’s what they are!

  • Meh or Wow?

Maybe we don’t get an exciting new camera with brand new sensor. Maybe we don’t get a totally surprising new lens (oh, where are you XF150-600), but the Fujifilm X Summit of tomorrow, September 2 at 9AM New York time is a very well thought out step forward by Fujifilm. Everything (except for the X-T30II) makes sense and will contribute to the growth of the X and GFX system.

And as I said above, I can’t remember a Fujifilm X summit that has not surprised us, either with some prototypes to show, development announcements and what not.

So, again, drop down below what you’d like to be surprised with tomorrow.

TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8 Macro Review

FujiRumors has already shared the TTArtisan lens short-mid term roadmap for Fujifilm X and GFX mount, and it contains a few very nice options, including the first TTArtisan autofocus lens for Fujifilm. You can check it our here.

One lenses on the roadmap and scheduled for September release is the TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8 Macro lens.

Well, fellow X shooter pal2tech has already got his hands on the TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8 macro. Above you can see the full video and below summary:

  • to cost around $100/150
  • strange, flat and thin lens cap
  • lens hood is not included
  • very tight aperture ring
  • 8 elements in 7 groups
  • 11 aperture blades
  • f/2.8 to f/16
  • 372 gram weight
  • not electronically controled lens. All manual lens and no EXIF lens data saved
  • solidly build lens
  • very nice focus ring
  • clear markings
  • filter size 52
  • 70cm minimum focus distance
  • at f/2.8 there is some vignetting and center is quite soft
  • at f/4 it gets much better
  • even better at f/5.6, but it still a bit soft of the corners
  • corners improve at f/8. Best aperture for this lens
  • no chromatic aberration issues
  • pretty good job of subject isolation at f/2.8
  • color rendition slightly on the cooler side
  • not recommended for professional macro work. You’ll need optical quality of the Fujinon XF80mm F2.8
  • but for prosumers it is a viable option

Sensor Cleaning and IBIS

For most users of X-Series cameras, do-it-yourself sensor cleaning with blowers, sticky sticks or swabs is a matter of course. However, things can get a little bit tricky if your camera has IBIS.

by Rico Pfirstinger

Sooner or later, cameras with interchangeable lenses get dust or dirt on the sensor. When the built-in sensor-cleaning function (SET UP > USER SETTING > SENSOR CLEANING > OK) doesn’t help, you can clean the sensor by yourself.

If you leave your camera’s sensor exposed, it will soon collect dust and spots from dried fluids.

Popular Sensor Cleaning Options

  • Touchless cleaning involves using a blower, like the Giottos Rocket Air Blaster, to rid the sensor of dust particles. A key feature of such devices is a filter in the intake valve that prevents contaminated (dusty) air from being blown against the sensor.
Caution! Don’t use compressed air from aerosol cans that contain propellants. Particles could hit the sensor like tiny projectiles and damage the protective surface!
  • Tough sensor dirt (like water or oil stains) requires wet cleaning with a sensor swab. They consist of wipers that are wetted with special cleaning fluids. Wipe one side of the swab from left to right over the full width of the sensor, and then from right to left with the other side of the swab. Your X-mount camera requires swabs that match APS-C-sized sensors.

Fujinon XF33mmF1.4 and XF23mmF1.4 II Coming with Linear Autofocus Motor and Weather Sealing on September 2

The Fujinon XF33mm f/1.4 and the Fujinon XF 23mm f/1.4 II will be announced on September 2.

Today we can tell you that both these lenses will have weather sealing as well as linear motor autofocus.

As explained by Fuji Guy Billy in this article, Fujifilm uses four different type of motors in their lenses:

  • stepping motors
  • linear motors
  • DC coreless motors
  • ultrasonic type of motors

Each motor has its Pros and Cons and you can read about it here.

Linear motors are certainly not the smallest, but they have two wonderful characteristics: they are fast and silent.

Fujifilm’s Biggest Error is Now Fixed (and Waiting for Sigma)

It’s a rare thing…

it’s a rare thing that the entire FujiRumors community agrees on a certain matter.

But Fujifilm succeeded in this miracle!

How?

By categorically refusing to open their lens protocols to third party lens manufacturers.

And still in 2019 top Fujifilm managers insisted that there is no need to have Sigma, Tamron & Co on the X mount side of life.

I love you Fuji, but this was just the biggest error the management ever took, proven by the fact that’s it’s also the one decision the entire FR community disagreed with.

Well, Fujifilm finally fixed this error in 2020, by saying they open X mount to third parties.

Late, but better late than never.

And guess what is happening? Third party manufacturers are finally joining the X mount, attracted by the Fujifilm market share and facilitated by the open lens protocols (a deal breaker for Sigma for a long time).

So let’s see what is happening.

Cosina launched the Voigtländer Nokton 35mmF1.2 X, no autofocus, but with electronic contacts to provide Exif data and focus check.

Tokina launched a couple of X mount lenses.

Sigma is hinting to have lenses for X mount coming in 2021.

And the probably biggest news so far: Tamron will be launching the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 for Fujifilm X in 2021.

And since we have Tamron officially on board now, I thought we could give a revival to our original Tamron X mount lenses wishlist, which we published back in 2020 here.

You can still vote the survey, but so far you top 10 Tamron wishes are:

  1. Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD / G2
  2. Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD / G2
  3. Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD
  4. Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD
  5. Tamron SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD
  6. Tamron 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD
  7. Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD / G2
  8. Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC (LD) Aspherical [IF]
  9. Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD
  10. Tamron SP AF 60mm F/2.0 Di II LD [IF] Macro 1:1

And given the increasing X mount autofocus offering, we launched the dedicated third party X autofocus lenses group here.
