Fujinon XF200mm F2: Filter Size 105mm (no Drop-In Filter), Beige Color & Recap

Fujinon 200mm F2 Vs. CaNikon equivalent lenses

Fujinon XF200mm F2

Let’s go straight to the point:

According to our sources (thanks), what we have shared so far about the XF200mm F2 is all correct:

  • Unlike publicy shown by Fujifilm, the XF200 won’t be black, but tending towards “white” (more of a beige color). This is made to improve image quality, as we reported here
  • The Fujinon XF200mm F2 will require new teleconverters, because the current ones are only designed to work down to f2.8,. The first new teleconverter we will get is the 1.4x TC, as we reported here.

And now the new stuff:

Fujinon XF200mmF2 Coming Bundled with New 1.4x Teleconverter for around $6,000 and New Anti-Reflection Coating

Just recently our sources told us that the upcoming Fujinon XF200mm F2 won’t be black as officially displayed by Fujifilm so far, but white.

Well, I am in constant contact with our sources, and they gave us some additional details about the XF200mmF2 WR OIS.

Fujifilm had to re-design their current teleconverters, because they are only designed to work down to f2.8. Hence, for the start, Fujifilm will sell the XF200mmF2 WR also bundled with the new 1.4x Teleconvert (but not the 2.0x TC) for about $6,000.

The source also told us that the Fujinon XF200mmF2 OIS WR will introduce a brand new anti-reflection coating to reduce flare.

A warm advice to all: there will be rumors, so make sure to follow us on Facebook, RSS-feed, Instagram, Youtube and Twitter.

have a fantastic day,

Fujinon XF200mm F2 OIS WR Will Be “White/Light Gray” for Better Image Quality

Fujinon XF200mmF2 OIS WR

I know, every mock-up Fujifilm has officially shown so far at various photography fairs shows a nice black Fujinon XF200mm F2 OIS WR.

However, I hear from a long time trusted source, that the final color won’t be black as Fujifilm showed us so far, but white.

Well, not really 100% white. It seems to be more a “white to light gray” color.

The reason for the bright color is the same why Canon’s long glass is white. Canon explains here:

Lenses contain glass elements. These expand with heat. This is not usually a problem with compact lenses − the amount of expansion is small. But large lenses contain large elements and here expansion can bring a lens close to the limits of its design tolerances. A white surface reflects sunlight, helping to keep the lens cooler.”

So if you go to photography fair and see a black XF200mmF2 OIS WR displayed there again, then now you know it’s fake news ;) .

Fujifilm X-H1 Development Story #1 -Frame. Fujinon XF200mmF2 will Weight more than 2kg

Fujifilm X-H1 with reinforced ribs for use with heavy glass
Fujifilm X-H1 with reinforced ribs for use with heavy glass

Fujifilm X-H1 Development Story

Fujifilm just published part 1 of their Fujifilm X-H1 development story.

Let’s examine the X-H1. The product planner requested the developers to make the body more robust so that new devices could be installed and the expected camera performance could be realized. In order to make the body more robust, the frame, which is made of magnesium alloys, needed to be strengthened by adding extra thickness. The frame is 125% thicker for X-H1, meaning that the frame has almost doubled in volume (1.25 x 1.25 x 1.25 = 1.95). The strength of the frame is almost twice as strong.

Portability and lightweight are the charm of the X Series. This should always be taken into account even when considering an exterior design that is more robust. The designer examined the frame closely and learned where the stress is most/least applied and where the extra strength is most/least needed. With the study, the following structure with pillars jointing the exterior part has been realized, which helped minimize the effect on body size.

[…] In near future there will be lenses that weigh more than 2kg. [note: given that they show the XF200mmF2 in the article, it’s save to assume they meant the 200mm]

To withstand the stress, the mount part is reinforced ribs as shown below.”

Fujinon XF200mmF2 will Cost around $6,000

Fujinon XF200mmF2 OIS

Fujinon XF200mmF2 OIS WR

Hey all…

I hear that the Fujinon XF200mmF2 will cost around $6,000!

Yes, I know this is a hefty price, and you can basically buy a medium format Fujifilm GFX 50S for the same money. But also consider that equivalent lenses in the CaNikon world are also not a bargain.

In fact, the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II costs $6,100 and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II costs $5,500.

As I already told you back in September 2017 here, the Fujifilm XF200mmF2 will be compatible with the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverter, which will give you respectively a 280mmF2.8 and 400mmF4 lens.

Attacking the Niche

I’m sure that the XF200mmF2 will be a fantastic lens, but to track my 13 years old dog, I’ll stick with my XF 55-200 ;) .

However, for professional sports photographers, this lens will be a game changer.

Overall I think it makes a whole lot of sense for Fujifilm to launch such glass.

Fujifilm already offers the vastest lens range in the mirrorless APS-C world and now they must to “attack” those niches, who need THAT particular lens, before they can switch completely to Fujifilm.

Not only XF200mmF2, but also tilt shift lenses or even ultra fast lenses like the XF33mmF1.0 come to mind.

So let us know in the comments, which “niche-glass” you think Fujifilm should launch next.

Fujifilm (Currently) Planing a Fujinon XF200mm F2 :: POLL – F2 or F2.8

Recently Fujifilm updated the roadmap, and shows for 2018 a ultra wide angle zoom (the rumored 8-16) and a telephoto prime lens.

An old rumor of over 1 year ago, shared by source, right in the past, said that on Fuji’s internal roadmap it is a 200mmF2 lens. Well, I got further indication now, that it is still currently planed as F2 lens.

However, as the source wants to make clear, these things can change very quickly at Fujifilm, since they are still investigating how profitable various options would be, so an F2.8 option is still on the table… as also a Fujifilm Manager also said here.

And as usual, when Fujifilm is in trouble, I know that you guys are always willing to help with your contributions… and we have multiple evidence that the Fujifilm Management not only reads us, but eventually also makes decisions based on your feedback.

So, here is a poll….

Of course, keep in mind, that if you vote for the 200/2, you will get a bigger and more expensive lens as opposed to the relatively smaller and more affordable 200/2.8. Each lens has its Pros and Cons… but vote only for the one you would buy.

I would buy a...

Preface:

About a year ago while hiking in Zion Utah, I came across a big horn sheep herd, I took some pictures with the Fuji 90mm at far too close a distance (around 4 meters), since then I’ve been hooked and keen on trying out wildlife photography as a pastime. This is what has led me into the point I am at now, with a Fuji 100-400mm a 2x teleconverter and a cropped sensor, equating to ≈ 1200mm

Equipment: Fuji X-Pro2, Fuji 100-400mm, Fuji 2x TC

Look and feel:

The combination is very easy to use, it’s still light, although too long for most bags, and wildlife begs for your camera and lens to be ready and set up, with hood on and camera setup it makes this a large, yet light package.

Durability:

Hiked through the mountains of Yellowstone Nation Park for 10 days, got rained on very hard (way to much for comfort) and the combination kept up with nary a problem in sight. It seems to be apt for the job.

Sharpness:

Well this is tricky, the Fuji 100-400 is sharp, but at the 400mm end it’s not as sharp, the setup although fantastic for shooting hand-held, isn’t bright enough to keep ISO down and shutter speeds up, not to mention swinging 1200mm is tricky at best and your movement is amplified greatly and you can overwork the Optical Stabilization quickly with quick jerks and movements, but I got really good results hand-held @1200mm’s without wearing myself out because of weight and size, I would call that a good give and take.

Image Stabilization:

It’s hands down amazing, it’s not magic, you can’t swing this combination and hope for the best, but I spoke with many photographers all of which were posting against something or had tripods, at the distances we were sharing my photos were more clear, and usually much closer.

Reach:

1200mm can be shot handheld with ease, and its much easier to fill up the frame at safer distances.

Auto Focus:

It works, and I know this sounds rather silly, but you have to spend a lot of money on the DSLR side to get 1200mm to autofocus (from what I know). It’s actually pretty fast and accurate in good light. It’s amazing to think that it is contrast based to be honest.

Conclusion:

I couldn’t be happier with this combination, I’m truly hoping that fuji comes out with a 300mm f2.8, I would buy that setup in a heart beat. As is though, Fuji is really moving quickly with filling in all the gaps with lenses, they are making wonderful optics and they truly work well and are a pleasure to use.
