Fujifilm GFX 100 Media Slides: 50% faster AF with Phase Detection at -2 EV @ F2, Why Only One Shooting Mode Dial Explained and More

Fujifilm GFX100

The Fujifilm GFX100 removed all dedicated dials except for one “Shooting Mode Dial“, which will allow you select between stills, multi or movie mode.

We had a huge debate about the Fuji GFX100 dial removal here on Fujirumors (includes a poll) and mostly people were not happy at all about it, because they feel that dials and retro-controls are part of the X series DNA.

Well, it seems that Fujifilm was not insensible to the mostly negative feedback that came from the FujiRumors community and they now felt the need to explain why they removed the dials. Check the “new shooting mode switch operation” section below.

I will add all the screenshots to all the media slides below, but I also write them all down here on FujiRumors, just in case you are watching this on a smartphone and you don’t want to open the slides and keep up zooming in and out to read them… we like to take care of our readers here on FujiRumors ;).

You will also find the hands on images by dpreview, who also said:

  • textured finish similar to that used on the GFX 50S
  • integrated grip provides more space for shutter mechanism and IBIS
  • about the size of Nikon D5 or Canon EOS-1DX II – comparison here
  • lacks the retro-style dials
  • large 3-position dial on the left is used to switch the camera between movie, stills and multiple exposure modes
  • ‘drive’ button at its center
  • large top screen won’t make miss the large shutter speed and ISO dials of its predecessor too badly
  • EVF clarity and resolution excellent. Free from the pixelation and noticeable lag which affected the finder of the 50S
  • viewfinder unit is removable, but when the GFX 50S finder is attached to the GFX 100, they won’t get the benefit of the greatly improved resolution of the newer EVF
  • all-new OLED ribbon display on the back, below the main LCD will serve to show the status of key camera settings
  • tilt and touch screen
  • While the main shutter dial has an on/off switch collar, the same control on the secondary shutter release serves to lock/unlock the button
  • Battery life: ~400 shots (CIPA) per single charge
  • dual SD-card slot
  • next-generation XQD/CFexpress media in the GFX 100 is being discussed for future products in the GFX lineup
  • microphone and headphone jacks, plus HDMI and USB, courtesy of a USB 3.0 Type C port
  • possible to charge the GFX 100 over USB
  • 4K/30, 10bit, 4:2:0 video internally and 10bit 4:2:2 externally via HDMI
  • GF 45mm F2.8 delivered plenty of sharp images at 1/20sec and a couple of acceptably sharp shots at shutter speeds as low as 1/6sec
  • GFX 100 could support sensor-shift features in future [already rumored on FujiRumors]
  • AF speed appears very good, and certainly greatly improved over the original GFX 50S
  • available on-time, in late spring or early summer.
  • price around $10,000

Fujifilm X-T3: Steve Huff Loves It, Robert Hall Not So Much, X-T2 vs X-T3 Face/Eye AF Comparison and More

Hugh Brownstone – Fuji X-T3 Autofocus and James Bond: Focus Pulls and Eye AF WORK!

Fujifilm X-T3

The Fujifilm X-T3 is definitely a huge step up in terms of speed. Hence, one of the most tested aspects of this camera is its autofocus and eye AF performance.

In fact, even long time Fujfiilm critic Steve Huff now finally fell in love with Fujifilm thanks to the Fujifilm X-T3 (video below).

But not everybody has just postive things to say.

Robert Hall has a rather critical view on the Fujifilm X-T3. Actually on the entire Fujifilm system. He is annoyed that the Fujifilm X-T3 came out short after the Fujifilm X-H1, with all superior specs. But he is also annoyed that it has no IBIS. And he doesn’t like the fact that Fuji’s wide F1.4 and F1.2 lenses are not fast focussing like their slower Fujicron F2 lenses.

Neale James instead is about to switch from Canon to Fujifilm X-T3, and shows you how painful it can be to wait for the UPS guy to deliver your X-T3 ;).

It’s all down below… enjoy it guys :)

Phase Detection Evolution: Fujifilm patents hybrid AF Pixel !

 photo asd_zpsaffcda03.png

Fujifilm continues its research in order to develop new sensor technology. After the organic sensor and the one with different pixel size (enlarged green pixels) egami (click here) spotted a new patent: the hybrid AF pixel.

If I deciphered correctly the google translated text, then here is what this sensor is about:

If you implement phase detection pixels into the sensor (like on the X-Trans II sensor or on the [shoplink 22210]Sony A6000 sensor[/shoplink]) you’ll benefit of faster AF. But, on the other hand, as these pixels can’t be used to gather light, you’ll have some “image quality degradation.”

But the hybrid Pixel is supposed to be able to do both: improve the AF speed and at the same time gather light. As egami explained: “Transmittance would not be 100% that there is an optical element, but I will be able to minimize the image quality degradation.” Egami explains that Fujifilm’s “hybrid pixel approach” is different from the Dual Pixel AF technology of Canon.

What do you think? Is it a wise move of Fujifilm to put R&D into new sensor technology, or should they simply continue to purchase the APS-C sensors of Sony (although Fuji has to wait half a year to get its hands on the newest Sony sensors)?

X200 rumor

Hi all

2014 could be the year of the X200. Previous rumors (xjrumo) said it would be full frame.

Now, a new source (thanks a lot) shared more details with us. Here is what it wrote.

“X200 is a total upgrade of X100/X100s with tilt screen, fixed new lens, and bright new EVF (better than X100s but not as much as X-T1). 24 MP X trans sensor, very much improved AF (compared to X100S) with wider detection area [admin: wider phase detection pixels area]. Quite an exciting time !!”

Sure, take it with a grain of salt. The source contacted me via rumor box, so it’s anonymous, but it gave itself a nickname. I appreciate that, as it allows me to check the reliability of new sources in future.

So, if there is anyone out there who can already confirm it, don’t hesitate to contact FR.

Oh, and after the success of the X-T1, let’s try it again… here is the rumored specs list :-)

(TS= trusted source / NeS =New Source / AS = Anonymous Source / SRP = source who was right in the past, but not yet trusted / ORS = other rumor sites)

  • Full Frame (ORS – xjrumo)
  • 24MP X-Trans sensor (NeS)
  • faster AF than X100S (NeS)
  • tilt screen (NeS)
  • new fixed lens (NeS)
  • new EVF, better than X100S, but not as much as X-T1 (NeS)
  • wider detection area (NeS)

cheers

Phase detection AF vs Contrast AF… or why you should upgrade your lens firmware (for X-E2 owners)

 photo proxy_zpsf8b12c2c.jpg

In a recent tweet on twitter, Billy from the Fuji Guys shows a graph that demonstrates the AF-speed difference between the Contrast AF and the Phase detection AF. As you know, the recently released X-E2 adopts this hybrid AF-system. Remember that if you really want to take advantage of the massively improved AF you have to focus in the center of the image, as the Phase Detection Pixels are located in the central part of the sensor.

The fastest focussing lens now is the [shoplink 12888]XF 14mm[/shoplink]!

The graph also shows the improvement on the [shoplink 12891]XF 18mm[/shoplink] and [shoplink 13829]XF 27mm[/shoplink]… the PDAF & LMO update for these lenses will be released later this month… who knows, maybe together with the 10-24mm, which should come on NOV 20! Stay tuned on FR on that day and follow us also via facebook, google+ and twitter.

And there is a brand new hands on review of the X-E2 at Tom Grill’s website here: “One question that pops to mind is whether or not a switch from an X-E1 to X-E2 is worth the price. This says a lot about the X-E1, which is an exceptional camera in its own right. Nonetheless, the changes made to the X-E2 address issues that are important to anyone using these cameras in a work environment. Now that I have had time for a hands-on assessment of the X-E2, I can say unequivocally that it was well worth the switch.”

Fujifilm FAQ Page: Best Settings (and Lenses) for Subject Tracking, SD-Card Tips, Lenses Made in Japan, Compatibility Questions and More

Fujifilm FAQ

I often get questions from fellow FR-readers about all sorts of issues, recommendations, tips and what not surrounding all type of Fujifilm X and GFX cameras and lenses.

Now, I do my best to reply to all of you, but it can take time until I reply and sometimes I sadly don’t have the answer to your questions.

That’s why today I wanted to inform you that Fujifilm has a dedicated FAQ page for their X and GFX gear.

Inside there you might sometimes find the answer to your questions faster (and better) than what I can do.

Some Selected Questions

The WORST Thing About Fujifilm (and Other Brands) according to Chris & Jordan (PP)

In their latest episode, Chris and Jordan run over the worst things of every camera brand.

And after some nice praise for the Fujifilm system overall, they express their main complaint, which are:

  • Menu System needs imrpovements: for example, face detection and subject detection are separate items, slowing you down unnecessarily
  • Fujifilm cameras are more prone to write errors and bad surprises when using certain memory cards. To their credit, though, Fujifilm lists the compatible memory cards. But with other brands, they don’t experience as many issues when using non recommended memory cards

The detailed list of recommended cards for X-T5 can be found here and for X-T4 here.

The Power of VLOG: Fujifilm X-S20 Coming with Product Priority and Background Defocus Mode

After I shared the rumor about the Fujifilm X-S20 having a dedicated VLOG icon printed on the PSAM dial, trusted sources reached out to me and informed me about some brand new “vlogging” modes that Fujifilm will introduce with the Fujifilm X-S20.

More precisely, they told me that it will have:

  • Product Priority Mode
  • Background Defocus Mode

I have not been given any further details than that, but to me it sounds like the “product priority mode” could be something like the feature we find on the Sony ZV cameras.

And if it really is something like we find it on the Sony ZV cameras, then this is how it would work.

Usually when making talking head videos, Vloggers have their camera set on face detection. This means that when they want to show a product, they have to hide their face behind the product in order to disable face detection and let the camera focus on the product itself.

Well, with this feature, at least on Sony ZV cameras, the camera recognises when a product enters the frame and focuses on it, without the need for the Vlogger to hide his face behind it.
