Jonas Rask, Elia Locardi and More Live Stage in Photokina 2018

Live Stage Photokina 2018

Fujifilm uploaded a few more Fujifilm X photographer live stages from Photokina 2018. This time we have Jonas Rask, Elias Locardi and more.

And speaking of Jonas…

Jonas Rask has published a 5 part blog post series, that he has made from his 6 day trip to Japan back in October.  He used so many different Fujifilm cameras, so it’s basically a showcase of what these cameras could do on a trip like this.

Gear used by Jonas:

  • GFX50R – GF45 + GF63
  • X100F with EF-X20 flash
  • XT3 with XF35mm f/1.4 and Laowa 9mm f/2.8

You can read the blog posts here: Tokyo 1, Tokyo 2, Tokyo/Kyoto 3, Tokyo 4, Tokyo 5.

Which SUPER Fast “FULL FRAME” Lenses Should FUJIFILM Release Next?

Fujifilm’s Next Super Fast Lens

In his big e Fujifilm X-T3 Vs. Canon EOS R, Nikon Z7, Sony A7 III, Sony A7R III and Sony A9 sport photography shootout (which we shared here), Tony Northrup said, that Fujifilm needs faster glass, in order to compete with full frame also in terms of shallow DOF and ISO grain.

The Fujinon XF 200mm F2 and XF 33mm F1.0 are exactly such lenses, but as we reported here, Tony also asks for F1.8 zooms, which would put Fujifilm “in the same league as Full Frame.”

So feel free to let us know in the comments, which super fast Fujinon XF lenses Fujifilm should launch next in order to match full frame.

FYI: Fujifilm managers recently said they will never go full frame.

Review of the Fujinon XF200mm f/2 for Motorsports Photography

Fujinon XF200mm f/2.0 LM OIS WR

Review of the Fujinon XF200mm f/2 for Motorsports Photography

by Stephen Scharf
Racing the Light Photography
www.stephenscharf.com

OVERVIEW

I had the pleasure to use and extensively test the newly released Fujinon XF200 f/2.0 LM OIS WR in October, 2018 while covering the Sports Car Club of America’s 2018 National Championships, also know as “The Runoffs” at Sonoma Raceway, Sonoma, CA, Oct 19-21, 2018.

Fujifilm North America graciously sent me the Fujinon XF200 f/2.0 along with an X-T3 and battery grip for approximately 10 days for motorsports photography testing to compare to my Fujifilm X-H1. The purpose of the test was to collect autofocus performance data for both cameras when used in a real-world professional motorsports photography use-case, and for this weekend long test-session, I used the new XF200 f/2.0 exclusively, as well as the new 1.4X teleconverter in some situations.

BACKGROUND: I’ve been a professionally accredited motorsports photojournalist for 15 years. I’ve was an official track photographers for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for 7 years, and have been shooting as an accredited photojournalist for Sonoma Raceway since 2003. I cover all their professional series races, including NASCAR, NHRA Professional and Indy Car, and my photographs have been published in numerous newspapers in the SF Bay Area, including the San Francisco Chronicle, as well as various motorsports websites and magazines.

Capture One Pro 12 with FUJIFILM Film Simulations Released and TESTED vs Lightroom and In Camera

Capture One Pro 12

If you were waiting for Capture One Pro to add Fujifilm film simulation support, well, then your day to get the newly released Capture One Pro 12 has come! And of course you save 10% with code AMBFR on the standalone version, and 5% with code AMBFR on the subscription model.

NOTE: Apparently film simulations work only with cameras that feature an X-Processor Pro or X-Processor 4, so X-Pro2, X-T2, X-T20, X-H1, X-T3, X-E3, X100F, GFX50S and GFX5oR. Check out the full list here.

If you purchased Capture One Pro 11 from the 1st of November and later, you will get a free upgrade to Capture One Pro 12.

But Capture One Pro 12 adds more than just Fujifilm film simulation profiles.

Improvements, new features and new tools in Capture One 12

  • Powerful, refined interface
  • Revamped menu system
  • Luminosity masking
  • Linear Gradient Mask
  • Radial Gradient Mask
  • Redesigned Keyboard Shortcut manager
  • New plug-in ecosystem
  • Fujifilm Film Simulation support
  • Extended AppleScript support

Film Simulation Comparison

I have made a quick comparison between in-camera, Lightroom and Capture One Pro film simulation, based on the last Capture One Beta software available. I will re-test it with the final version, and update this article, if I see relevant changes.

IMPORTANT NOTES

NOTE 1: Images are compressed for web use. Hence, you might notice artifacts in some images
NOTE 2: I have bumped up the “Light Falloff” slider in Capture One Pro 12 to match the vignetting of Lightroom and In-Camera
NOTE 3: I can apply ETERNA to my Fujifilm X-E3 in Capture One, but since I can’t create ETERNA files in my Fuji X-E3 or in Lightroom, I will skip this comparison

IC = In Camera
C1 = Capture One
LR = Lightroom

CONCLUSIONS

Both, Capture One and Lightoom, make a very good job.

However, looking at the high-resolution images on my retina display, I consider Capture One film simulations a bit more faithful to the original Fujifilm film simulations, since Lightroom tends to add a tiny bit too much warmth to the images.

There are only two film simulations, where the warmer Lightroom images are a slightly more faithful to the original Fuji film simulations: Acros and Monochrome.

Keep in mind I used a Beta C12 version, and Phase One might have fine tuned it further in the meantime.

SAMPLES (and What’s NOT Included)

Here is the In-Camera vs Capture One vs Lightroom Fujifilm film simulation comparison.

For the sake of your readability (and page loading time), I compared all film simulations, except for Monochrome Standard/Y/G/R, Acros R/G/Y and Pro Neg Hi.

I have all the comparisons done, so if you absolutely insist, I can upload them. But I think the images down below already show how good Capture One’s film simulations are. And you can always download the free 30 days Capture One Pro 12 trial, and play around with them by yourself.

And beware: those who ask in the comments for a Sepia comparison, will be immediately banned ;).

With that said, these are boring images (the ones I am proud of I share them on my Instagram), but I think they are good images to compare the film simulations.

FUJIFILM shares Additional Details About Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm X-H1 Firmware Updates in December

Fujifilm just released an updated note regarding their upcoming firmware updates for Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm X-H1 in December. All details below.

Updated Features on November 27:

We would like to amend some of firmware updates that we announced on November, 13, 2018.

Firmware Version:
FUJIFILM X-T3 (Ver. 2.00)

Slower shutter speeds than the framerate can be selected with 4K 29.97P/25P/24P/23.98P. The setting cannot be applied when you select Long GOP with DCI4K/4K or FHD. Please refer to the “Movie Recording Mode” chart below for more details.

Firmware Version:
FUJIFILM X-H1 (Ver. 2.00)

In order for the in-body image stabilization and optical image stabilization to work together when using the XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro, the lens must also have new firmware applied (Ver. 1.11). The new firmware will be released at the same time as the X-H1 firmware version 2.00 (December 2018).
