ok, before I sell a kidney, let’s try it this way…

Focal Plane Shutter Vs. Leaf Shutter

The last 10 days where really busy “Fujifilm GFX” days here on FujiRumors. And all the specs we have heard are nice and good, but the biggest talk is definitely about the focal plane shutter (compared to the Hasselblad X1D leaf shutter).

But first, let’s just quickly wrap up the PROs and CONs of leaf and focal plane shutters:

Focal Plane Shutter:
+ faster shutter speeds wide open
+ adapting third-party lenses (GFX works with leaf shutter lenses and regular lenses)
+ cheaper, smaller & less complex lens design
– bigger camera body
– limited sync speed for flash work

Leaf Shutter:
+ smaller camera body
+ higher sync speeds
+ more quite then focal plane shutter
– lenses are bigger and more expensive due to the build in leaf shutter mechanism in every lens
– adapting third-party lenses (X1D works only with leaf shutter lenses)
– slower shutter speeds wide open

Everyone of you has obviously his/her priorities, so depending on what your needs are, you might prefer a leaf shutter or a focal plane shutter. Just drop your vote in this Poll and let us know.

Global Shutter

Ok… did you vote the Poll? Well done!

Now, this is a rumor site, and it’s in my nature to always look ahead at what the future could bring us. And today I’d like to talk more clearly about something, that I’ve already hinted in this Hasselblad Vs. Fujifilm article…. the global shutter. [The Global Shutter keeps the virtues of the electronic shutter – no shutter sound and ultra fast shutter speed – and at the same avoids motion blur – no rolling shutter effect – ].

The Global Shutter is no science ficition thing. Sony already uses it since 2015 for their security camera business and also Panasonic has announced its development in an official press release of March 2016.

The question is not “if” it will come also for professional high-end cameras, but “when”. And if we can trust this rumor, then we could see it become real in 2018/2019.

Once companies will start implementing the global shutter in their cameras, then Fujifilm will be able to get rid of the mechanical shutter, and build an even smaller and more compact Medium Format camera… Hasselblad X1D small. With one more advantage: the lens design can remain the same of the current GF Lenses: no leaf shutter, less complex, smaller… and cheaper.

And if the global shutter works well also for flash work (and it should), then also the leaf shutter should become obsolete.

If all this becomes true in the next few years (and my crystall ball says this is very likely), then we will look back and maybe also those, who consider the lack of leaf shutter an error, will change opinion on that… and just be happy they got great Fujinon GF glass for a cheaper price (and more compact) then it would be with leaf shutter.

And for the immediate future, Fujifilm will offer to those, who absolutely need leaf shutter for their flash work, an adapter for Hasselblad HC leaf shutter lenses (with autofocus support)…. so the best of both worlds: leaf shutter or focal plane shutter… you use what you need.

An Ordinary Day at Photokina…

Fujifilm GFX Camera and Lenses

So here I am… after a long, very long day, at Photokina.

As a mere mortal visitor, I sadly couldn’t visit the Fujifilm backstage… that’s where the real fun is. I could only stare at the Medium Format Fuji closed in a glass box. I couldn’t touch it, I couldn’t test the AF, I couldn’t look through the viewfinder, I couldn’t hold that wonderful baby in my hands. This is a privilege reserved to the press like our fellow FXF admin Andreas (see here), or others (see this post).

I really just attended the event as a mere mortal visitor… invisible… like… like… a stealthy ninja ;)

But I have “met” quite some “famous” people we all know from the internet. And I must say, I really did appreciate the fact to be be 100% anonymous.

At the end, I joined a Fujifilm Photowalk, and it was the most relaxing way to close an intense day. Hanging out with fellow X-shooter taking some shots… probably the very best part of the day… and it’s a pity I had too leave earlier.

At the Photowalk, there was one guy, who had the X-T2 with the 56mmF1.2 attached. When a runner passed along, he shot a burst @1.2. We checked the images, and no joke, 100% of the images where in focus!!! I tell you… whatever Fuji did with the X-T2, it really can compete with THE BEST DSLR’s.

I’ll let you just with some random impressions from my day… I’m going to grab a beer soon, to share with a student, who passed an important test ;)

P.S.: I asked Metz about their new M400 flash. They Rep told me they do not know for sure if their current protocols work with the X-T2. The flash will be available shortly after Photokina for €250. And if it doesn’t work for X-T2, they will work for a firmware fix, which should take no longer than a few weeks.

I recently had the honor of documenting the union of Anna and Hayden Taylor. They are a cute and fun couple, and I thoroughly enjoyed shooting them. I should also mention that Anna’s mother, Charla, was kind enough to provide me with a shot list, and kept everything running smoothly that day. It was arranged to be an intimate ceremony with close family in the living room of the Groom’s parents’ home. It all sounded like the perfect scenario for photographing my first wedding.

So was it all rainbows and unicorns? Not quite…

I had just switched from a Sony a7R II camera to a Fuji X-Pro2 the month before. I absolutely love the Fuji, but I still haven’t mastered it like the Sony. Moreover, I got a bad copy of the 16-55mm zoom-lens and was in the middle of an exchange – so I didn’t have it for the ceremony. Therefore, I went looking for a second body. I almost bought another X-Pro2, but I got a great deal on an Olympus Pen-F and two prime lenses the night before the big day. Suffice it to say, I had not mastered the Olympus either.

As for lighting, I purchased an on-camera speedlight, a Diva ring-light, and a small LED continuous light array. My wife also suggested I bring her light-gun, so I stopped by her studio on the way to meeting the bride, and her mother, at the salon. When I got to my wife’s studio she told me her light gun was “in the attic.” So I proceeded up the stairs to a little loft area where she keeps some of her equipment.

She then asked, “What are you doing?”

I explained, “I’m looking for the light-gun.”

She then said, “It’s in the attic – at home.”

Great :/

So, I grabbed a couple of her Westcott Ice lights and off I went.

The salon was very nice, but was pretty crowded (which I’m sure is normal for a Saturday), so it was hard to find a good shooting position, but I managed to get a few nice portraits.

Hoi Patrick, hoi everyone.

This is Boris, a newbie in this Fuji wonderland. Unlike many of you guys, I am by no means a professional photographer- not paid, not freelanced, nothing. Currently I’m doing photography as a hobby, but this pastime is getting a little bit pricey, thanks to my obsession with faux-rangefinder cameras (more on the term “faux-rangefinder later). For goodness sake it’s not a genuine German rangefinder camera. Gimme one and I’ll buy all the compatible lenses till I become bankrupt… 

It has been two years since I bought the Zeiss Touit Duo during “the crazy sale” for $900 – a deal that was too good to be true and nothing but irresistible. To be honest, it was a reckless decision because back then I didn’t even have an X-camera to go with those lenses (or more accurately, I didn’t know which X-body to buy since they all have the same 16MP sensor). Luckily there was a XE2 – XF 18mm F2 bundle and I snatched it up (not in a sense that I didn’t pay) immediately without the slightest hesitation. And that was how I hopped on the Fuji X bandwagon.

In this article, I am not going to bore you all with the specifications, scientific test charts and comparisons because you guys either know it better than I do or can read it on any review page, so I will keep this article very subjective and personal.

My first impression with the XE2 wasn’t all roses.

The build quality surprised me – the silver paint on the top plate started to chip after a week of light use, and what’s beneath is not the attractive lustre of brass as you may have expected to see in such a Leica-like camera, instead the black base paint reared its ugly head. No wonder why some confused the magnesium top plate with a plastic one. Based on my past experience with Panasonic GF1, the paint should hold up quite well, unfortunately that wasn’t the case for the Fuji.

Secondly, the autofocus is quirky. It hunts a lot, it is slow, and when it doesn’t hesitate it confidently focuses on the background rather than the subject. Whoever designed the original autofocus algorithm deserves to be spanked if not sacked. Again, that wasn’t something that I have anticipated in a highly acclaimed premium camera system, as a result I have missed focus in 20-30% of the photos I took in the first week.

Another problem is the stated ISO. I cannot get a correctly exposed image with the Sunny 16 rule, images often appear to be underexposed by one stop.

And then the distance scale – it is not as accurate as it looks, especially when coupled with the Zeiss 32mm.

If there were a 14-day return policy in Hong Kong, I would have exchanged it for a Pansonic GX7, but there isn’t any. As you could have guessed right now, I didn’t sell it. After all, Kaizen is all above constant improvements, right?

During these two years, I have taken this camera on two trips, first to the West Coast, and then to Amsterdam and the UK. And during these two years I am getting used to most of the quirks, which can be partially attributed to the new firmware improvements, and partially to the overall shooting experience.

At first, I didn’t quite get why people compared this digital camera to an old school rangefinder film camera a la Leica M – to me it doesn’t feel like a rangefinder at all. This is a faux-rangefinder camera. It doesn’t have a rangefinder. It doesn’t even have an optical viewfinder. With a liveview EVF, I can preview what the final image will look like with my exposure settings and film simulations (yes, I am a lazy JPEG shooter); and since there is no optical viewfinder to show the world beyond my framelines, I can frame as precisely as I can with a SLR camera. By the way, let’s not forget this camera has autofocus, which again isn’t something you can find on an old school rangefinder with a rare exception of the late Contax G1 &2. To keep things short, the more I shoot, the more I like this camera. 

Okay, let’s talk about the image quality. Blimey, that’s where this camera shines. Punchy & contrasty? Checked.  White balance? Quite accurate. Saturation? Slightly too saturated but in a pleasant way.  Grains? Absolutely bonkers, I swear there’s real film behind that lens. Sharpness? Well, that depends on the lens, right?

Despite all that rubbish I hear about the 18mm F2, it is my favourite lens. It may not be as sharp as the Zeiss lenses, but mind you it weighs half as much, it focuses twice as fast, and just these two points alone make this a must-have for any X shooter. And despite the wide angle distortion, it’s also a great environmental portrait lens thanks to the smooth, characterless bokeh. If you’re looking for an art lens, this isn’t it; but if you want a wide reportage lens, this is it, until the 23mm F2 comes out.

About two and a half years after the introduction of the successful X-T1, Fujifilm is getting serious with taking the X-series into “we can do everything” territory. At first glance, the X-T2 looks very much like its predecessor—why change a concept that stood behind Fujifilm’s (so far) most successful X-series camera? However, it’s a different story on the inside. At several global launch events, Fujifilm has made it very clear that the X-T2 is supposed to address all photographic needs, including sports and action shooting. It’s supposed to be a “complete mirrorless camera”.

Ready for business

Compared to the X-T1, the X-T2 features dozens of changes and improvements. Here’s an overview in 40 bullet points:

  • 24.3 MP X-Trans CMOS III sensor (Sony-built with 14 bit readout) with no anti-aliasing filter
  • X-Processor Pro is four times as fast as the EXR II processor used in the X-T1 and offers improved image quality, better noise response and higher dynamic range
  • improved ISO performance (about 1 stop better than the previous generation) with native ISO covering 200 to 12800, and extended ISO settings of 100, 25600 and 51200 (all with full RAW support)
  • 100% faster sensor readout, resulting in improved AF tracking performance, a dramatically reduced minimum blackout time of only 114 ms, and a high 100 fps EVF refresh rate
  • 0.005s display lag, 0.06s max. AF speed, 0.17s shooting interval, 0.045s shutter lag
  • configurable AF-C modes to adapt the AF system to different sports and action shooting scenarios
  • up to 11 fps burst speed in boost mode (14 fps when using the electronic shutter) with AF tracking
  • 3, 4 or 5 fps slow burst mode (CL) with full live-view and CDAF support
  • improved user interface and a new menu structure, including a custom My Menu with up to 16 entries
  • DSLR-style “AF-ON” option and new settings to individually engage/disengage focus and exposure lock when the shutter button is half-pressed
  • more tactile dials and buttons and a new push-button lock mechanism for top-plate dials
  • better grip and improved standard eyecup
  • convenient focus stick to quickly move the autofocus frame or zone (with up to 325 AF frames to choose from)
  • articulated rear screen works in landscape and portrait orientation
  • new Vertical Power Booster Grip with two additional battery slots for extended shooting (1000+ images) and duplicate controls
  • weather sealing with protection against rain, dust and freezing
  • improved 0.77x electronic viewfinder with better image quality and twice the brightness of the previous model, now also featuring an auto brightness mode
  • low-vibration 1/8000s mechanical shutter with 1/250s flash sync (supplemented by an electronic shutter with 1/32000s), rated for 150,000 shots
  • new flash system offers high-speed sync, wireless TTL and multi-frame shooting (in concert with compatible flash units such as the new EF-X500)
  • dual SD card slots (both support the ultra-fast UHS-II standard)
  • improved hybrid autofocus system with pro-level subject tracking, a larger phase-detection area and more focus points (7 x 13 or 13 x 25 focus points, including either 7 x 7 or 13 x 13 phase detection points)
  • automatic pixel mapping (to map out dead pixels)
  • improved JPEG quality and new ACROS film simulation with ISO-controlled film grain and noise shaping
  • expanded JPEG settings with additional options for contrast, noise reduction, sharpness, color saturation and film grain simulation
  • broader ±2 EV bracketing and ±5 EV exposure compensation (along with expanded Push/Pull options in the camera’s built-in RAW converter)
  • lossless RAW compression cuts RAW file size in half
  • improved battery life indicator for up to three batteries at once (including a 1% accuracy display)
  • enhanced electronic depth-of-field and distance scale with either pixel-based or film-based precision
  • new center-weighted metering option

TRAVEL TRIPOD: There are many options, and the choice is not easy. How much should you pay for it?

If you are not that kind of guy, who worries about gear getting stolen, then just grab the ultimate travel tripod, the Gitzo Carbon Travel Tripod… build to last forever. But there are cheaper options, that still do their job just fine.

BHphoto has an excellent overview on Travel Tipods here. I’ll list the best option (Gitzo) and a more affordable one (Manfrotto). I personally use the Sirui T-025x and I consider it fantastic value for the money. Feel Free to add your own suggestion in the comments.
