FUJIFILM Says FULL FRAME Does NOT Make Sense For them NOW and Compares Size, Weight, Price of APS-C with Full Frame

APS-C vs Full Frame

At the Spanish press event for the launch of the Fujifilm X-T3, Fujifilm has displayed a comparison between their Fujifilm X-T3 and a “mirrorless full frame” system. The media slides were published at the Spanish site albomedia.

The comparison should show, how Fujifilm’s APS-C system is better balanced in terms of size, weight and price compared to full frame. Well done Fuji, now you opened the Pandora box of equivalency… watch out what happens in the comments ;).

When asked if Fujifilm would enter Full Frame, Fujifilm answered:

We would have to start from scratch with the optics, and that would not make sense now

In a recent major poll here on FujiRumors, most FR-readers agree that Fujifilm should stick with their APS-C and medium format systems, and stay away from the full frame slaughter between Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and maybe even Olympus soon.

As a consequence to your vote, I have shared a list of advantages that APS-C offers over full frame.

Mirrorless vs DSLR

Then Fujifilm also displayed a chart, that shows the overall decline of the camera market, and that DSLR sales are affected most by this decline.

When asked what Fujifilm thinks about the Canon EOS R and the Nikon Z series, they answered:

” it’s good news, as it will allow mirrorless to grow. It is always better have 5% of a market of 20 million that 10% of a market of 5 million”

We already discussed this topic in our article “Canon and Nikon enter mirrorless, and Fujifilm is happy about it“.

Overview of the FUJIFILM Exhibition at Photokina 2018

As you know, Fujifilm has launched a dedicated Fujifilm Photokina microsite, where you can check out all the events planed for photokina.

Now they also published an official press release with all the details.

Well, actually not really all the details, since they don’t tell you that they will display also the Fujifilm GFX 50R, which will be announced on September 25 at 07:30 AM New York time :).

Here is the press release:

Fujifilm GFX 50R Coming September 25 for Around $4,500: No Cooling Box, Dual SD-Card Slot, 2 Way Tilt Screen and More Specs

Fujifilm GFX 50R

The Fujifilm GFX 50R will be announced September 25th at 07:30 AM York time. That’s when Fujifilm has its press conference ahead of photokina.

Let’s start with the price.

I have it 100% confirmed by multiple trusted sources, that the Fujifilm GFX 50R will cost around $4,500. Forget the grain of salt… that’s a fact! ;)

The final price has not yet been set, but there won’t be huge variations from that “around $4,500” (the GFX 50S currently sells for $5,849 with a $650 discount).

And now the rest.

RUMORED BY FUJIRUMROS SOURCES

We already knew about the Fujifilm GFX 50R that:

And here is the new stuff. All trusted. No grain of salt needed.

  • 2 way tilt screen (and not 3 way, like GFX 50S or Fujifilm X-T3)
  • dual SD-card slot
  • button layout/look similar to X-E3 (joystick etc), with a few differences, such as the MCS switch on the back of the camera instead than on the front like X-E3.
  • no more “cooling box” (meaning the “brick” at the back of the LCD that the Fujifilm GFX 50S has)

Finally we will have the first rangefinder-styled Fujifilm with tilt screen :)

RUMORED BY CAMERABETA WEIBO (link here)

  • same button layout as the X-E3, but with a larger size
  • There is no ISO dial, only the shutter and exposure compensation dial
  • This GFX-50R has no OLED shoulder screen
  • equipped with a tilt screen, with a lever
  • coming with a new 40mm pancake lens.
  • the thickness will be less than 42mm
  • the weight is below 800g
  • the price is expected to be 3600 …

Fujifilm GFX 50R Shipping in October – UPDATE

Fujifilm GFX 50R

According to the source (相机Beta), who 2 days ago leaked the first image of the Fujifilm GFX 50R, the Fujifilm GFX 50R will be released in October (meaning shipping, not announcement).

UPDATE: A Chinese reader told me that the word should be translated with “announced” and not “released (or shipped)”. Bad google translation apparently.

The Fujifilm GFX 50R will be an “affordable” rangefinder styled medium format camera. The final price has yet to be decided, but as we reported 2 days ago, just the 50 MP sensor used in the GFX costs $2,000 (same price also for the Hasselblad X1D). So my guess is that Fujifilm will have a hard time to sell it below $4,000.

FUJIFILM Should NOT go FULL FRAME you Say + Advantages of APS-C (and MF)

Specs are Fun, but don’t let them take Control over You: Keep up Watching at the (Photography) World primarily Artistically, rather than Technically

You Don’t Want Full Frame Fujifilm

Here are the results of the poll we launch a few days ago here.

77% of you voted that you don’t want a Full Frame interchangeable line by Fujifilm.

  • 43% don’t want FF at all
  • 19% don’t want FF in MILC, but they would like an FF Fujifilm X200
  • 15% don’t want FF, but a APS-H sensor that is still compatible with existing mount and lenses

So basically for 62% of you there is no need to have FF on Fuji’s MILC lineup, and my impression is that those, who vote for APS-H, care most about compatibility with existing lenses, hence, if APS-H is not possible, they’d rather prefer to keep APS-C than go FF  and invest all over again in a new system.

Only 12% of FR-readers are Pro full frame, whereas other 6% voted for the option to put a FF sensor in the G mount, making the GFX a hybrid system.

So, if Fujifilm listens, than at least here on FR the advice is clear: continue to improve, where you are already the best in the market, APS-C and Medium Format, and avoid the FF slaughter between Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and maybe even Olympus.

POLL: What Should Fujifilm Do Against Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and Olympus?

This is just a mock-up of the Fujifilm GFX 50R made by FujiRumors.com

Fujifilm in Times of Mirrorless Wars

With all the buzz around this new mirrorless war, and the tons of comments here on FujiRumors, I felt the need to launch one article to rule them all.

Hence, this will be the one article, where you can let your thoughts soar free, talk about the mirrorless war, vote polls, share thoughts and ideas.

Let it all out… we need that sometimes.

Let’s start:

Steelsring Nikon F to Fujifilm X Smart Adapter Development Announced… back in May ;) ! And What it Could Mean for Nikon Z6 and Z7

Nikon F to Fuji X Smart Adapter

Here on FujiRumors, we value your time and we want it to be time well spent, which is why we don’t like to regurgitate old news, since we are full of fresh news and rumors every day :)

However, today I woke up and found a few emails in my inbox from readers, asking me if I ever heard about the Steelsring Nikon F to Fujifilm X smart adapter.

So I figured out that in this case, it might be useful to share a reminder, since you might have missed it…. repetita juvant, as they say.

We reported back in May, that the Nikon F to Fuji X (as well as Nikon F to Fuji GFX) smart adapter is in development. Then, last month here, we showed you a first video demo of the GFX to Nikon F smart adapter version.

You can check out more at steelsring here.

If this adapter works well, then this could help to keep up the migration from Nikon to Fujifilm, which Nikon is trying to stop with the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 (about time, Nikon!).

Nikon users could continue to switch to Fujifilm and keep some of the Nikkor lenses they grow fond to. But I am pretty sure that once they enter and meet the Fujinon XF lens system quality, selling their Nikkor glass will become much easier than they would think ;).

Lots of other news, but also TONS of exciting rumors are coming… NOW! Make sure not to miss them hit the bell on the bottom right of your browser, to get instant browser notifications.

And I am warming up my fingers right now for a very exciting X-T3 live blogging. :)
