X-E1 with tilt screen!

Tilt screen, Yes or No? For those who’d like to have it, FR-reader Ken developed this solution: “It’s simply a small rectangle mirror taped to the bottom so it can be angled. Great for low angle shots.” So, spend a few dollars and upgrade the X-E1. ;)

thanks Ken

X100S

[shopcountry 12883]

 – Kevin has the X100S since a couple of months now. He published a blog post with his considerations. Low light performance, X100S or X-PRO1, with [shoplink 12893]WCL-X100[/shoplink], JPEG vs RAW, Custom settings, X100S and wedding photography… there is a lot to read and see here.

Fstoppers X100S review can be read here: They liked: “Great Image Quality / Leaf Shutter / Plenty of Features / Manual / Focusing Options / Beautifully Designed” They disliked: “Complicated Menus / Bad Low-Light Focusing / 1/3rds Stops system for Aperture and Shutter Complicated”

– X100S review at cameralabs here: “While the biggest changes are of course the new sensor, improved AF and upgraded viewfinder, there’s a raft of smaller improvement and enhancements like faster start-up time, faster continuous shooting with a larger buffer, 1:1 aspect ratio, and a protective coating on the viewfinder. There are some minor niggles; the problem with unresposive buttons persists and the X100S can be difficult to wake from sleep. the new 1080p60 movie mode is a welcome addition, but movie shooting otherwise still feels like a bit of an afterthought. And though it supports Eye-Fi cards, built-in Wi-Fi and GPS would be a welcome addition. But it’s hard to be disappointed in the X100S, it’s a superb camera that’s, highly capable, beautiful to look at, and a pleasure to use.

 X20

[shopcountry 12884]

pcmag X20 review can be read here. From the conclusions:

“The Fujifilm X20 is an improvement over its predecessor, another camera that we liked. It’s got the same big optical viewfinder, but it now displays current shooting settings and visually confirms focus lock. There are plenty of physical controls, and a hot shoe if you’d like to use an external flash. It’s still easy to block the viewfinder when adjusting the zoom, and if you’ve got clumsy fingers like mine you may end up smudging it with frequency. The X-Trans sensor lives up to its promise of producing images with a more natural, film-like grain; but at this point in time, Lightroom struggles a bit with noise reduction of Raw files shot at ISO 1600 and above. We really liked the X20, but it doesn’t manage to edge out the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 as our Editors’ Choice for premium compact cameras. The RX100 has a larger 1-inch image sensor that gives it a one-stop advantage in terms of image noise control, records images at 20 megapixels, and it’s noticeably smaller. But if you value the optical viewfinder and manual zoom control, and if you can afford it, the X20 will pay you back with excellent images.

– Read the test of expertreviews here.

“The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 is a better video camera, and its even brighter f/1.4-2.3 lens makes up for its slightly smaller sensor to put them roughly level pegging for photo quality. The LX7 is also quite a bit cheaper, at around £330. However, the X20’s superb optical viewfinder, superior controls and sumptuous design mean it doesn’t seem overpriced. So while the LX7 remains our favourite premium compact camera, the X20 deserves nothing less than five stars.”

 X-E1

[shopcountry 12881]

Steves-digicams comprehensive X-E1 review here: “The Fujifilm X-E1 is an outstanding ILC camera that is designed more for the photo enthusiast, rather than the average person. It has an outstanding set of features and hardware that provide amazing image quality and low-light performance, with relatively good shooting performance.”

jrbernstein X-E1 review can be read here: “The X-E1 packs a lot of punch in a very small, mid-priced, interchangeable-lens, EVF camera. It get’s you 90% of the way to a X-Pro1, but at a decent cost, size, and weight savings.  However, in my mind, the lack of optical viewfinder would make this a tough sell to full-time pros, like myself. […] ”

Dan Bailey flew out to the Knik Glacier and shot landscapes with the Fujifilm X-E1 under Alaska evening light (click here): “I’m finding the XE-1 to be a real joy to shoot with, and I think that it’s an really great camera for shooting landscapes. It’s got great resolution and the XF lenses give gorgeous, crisp images.

Photos and short commentary. Downtown Toronto with the X100s, X-E1, 18-55, 55-200. Check it out here. “This gear is so light, small and flexible! I’m no street photographer but I have been inspired by what I have seen from others. This gear-set lends itself to being mobile and discreet. Low light performance is excellent and JPG’s out of the camera are excellent. I shot both RAW and JPG and actually liked the JPG’s better. Fun factor is high.”

Here are Bert Stephani first impressions of the 55-200: “The lens seems very well constructed, the build quality seems to be very similar to the excellent 18-55. […] The zoom action is very smooth and with the right amount of friction. I will however need some time to get used to a tele zoom that physically changes length (and therefor also balance) when zooming after years of working with the internal zooming Canon 70-200 L IS 2.8. […] The autofocus is completely silent and reasonably fast as long as there’s enough contrast in the area you want to focus on. I expect to see a firmware update soon to improve the AF in more difficult circumstances. […] The optical quality is excellent

– At Sulantoblog you can read the 12mm Zeiss Touit review: “In my opinion the Zeiss Touit 12 mm f/2.8 is an excellent lens, but it makes sense for Fuji only if 14 mm is not wide enough. For Sony Nex the Zeiss will be very interesting option, because there is really no alternative if you want a super wide E-mount lens.”

Fuji XF14mm [shopcountry 12888]

admiringlight posted the sull XF14mm review here (with the shortest “con” list they ever posted :) ) From the conclusions: “The lens is very sharp from wide open and extremely sharp to the very furthest reaches of the corners when stopped down.  Chromatic aberration is controlled extremely well, and perhaps the most surprising element is the near total lack of distortion. About the only thing that bugs me about the lens is the relatively loose aperture ring, which is far too easy to accidentally knock out of your desired aperture position.  It’s very odd, too, as the aperture rings for Fuji’s other lenses are nowhere near as loose as the one on the 14mm.  However, in the grand scheme of the lens, it’s a minor inconvenience on what is otherwise just a stunning optic.”

Settings

– Everyone has it’s own “best” settings. Here are those of Kevin Mullins. He shoots with the X-PRO1 over a year now and this is his configuration (click here). Just an example, here is his Menu 2: “WHITE BALANCE – AUTO.  Always for me.  If I was in a studio situation then I would set white balance manually of course but for documentary wedding photography the AWB does an amazing job out of the box. SHARPNESS – +1.  I like to work with the jpgs and I find the default sharpness to be a tiny bit plasticy. NOISE REDUCTION – -1.  Again, because I work with the JPGs I prefer the noise reduction to be slightly less than the default out of the camera.  The images at 6400ISO are mind blowing good and with that in mind, and the JPG configuration this seems to work best for me.”

How to set up your Fujifilm X100S for street photography? Mike Kobal reveals his settings: “Since I received my X100s I haven’t touched anything else. I know the camera pretty well by now, shooting everything except jobs with it. Here are my settings for street shooting: […]” Well, to see them, check out Mike Kobal’s page here. X100S

[shopcountry 10075]

– thephoblographer X100S review is online here. They also highly recommend this camera. Excellent sensor performance, quite good built quality, the AF could be better in low light. But overall a rather exceptional camera.

“This camera’s autofocusing is a mixed bag. First off, Fujifilm cameras let you enlarge or shrink the size of the autofocus point. The smaller the point, the more fine-tuned the focus will be and in turn the slower it will go. The larger the point, the less fine-tuned the focusing will be and the faster it will go. Switch the camera into EVF mode and it will focus significantly faster than it can in OVF mode. […] In all honesty, this camera’s RAW file performance had me looking at my Olympus OMD EM5 and thinking to myself that its raw files just weren’t up to standard. Indeed, the Sony sensor inside the OMD far outperformed by the X100s. Granted, that is a Micro Four Thirds sensor, but it is one of the best in the mirrorless camera segment. With that in mind, we’re bound to get questions of whether someone should get a mirrorless camera or the X100s–and this little camera is wiping the floor with Micro Four Thirds options right now in terms of sensor performance. […]“

– “To summarise – the X100s is not going to be perfect for every photographer but as an everyday, walk around camera I don’t think there’s anything out there that matches it in terms of it’s size and what it is capable of producing. Beg, borrow or steal one to have a play with and see if it’s for you!” Read lightstalking’s first impressions here.

– From FR-reader Robin: “Hey Patrick, first of all thank you for the good work you’re doing. I check fujirumors at least once a day! :) Yesterday I posted my review about the x100s on my blog and people seem to like it, despite the fact, that this is my first review I’ve ever did. Now I was wondering, if you could post it on fujirumors? That would be great! :) all the best, Robin” Sure Robin! Read his review here! Nice shots Robin.

“When you are in macro-mode and get very close, pictures will be significantly softer if you are shooting wide open. Stopping down to f/2.8 will increase sharpness dramatically and from f/4 onwards there is nothing left to worry about. Unless you want that dreamy look I wouldn’t recommend shooting at f/2. […] The Fuji x100s is exactly what I was looking for, it is compact, lightweight, looks gorgeous and is able to deliver breathtaking images. The focal length gives you enough flexibility for most occasions. I would use it for travelling, weddings, reportage, street and especially environmental portraits. The only thing it’s not perfectly suited for is close up head shots, but that’s something I can perfectly live with.  And in case you need something wider, you can pick up the wide angle adapter and convert the 35mm lens into a 28mm lens which should be wide enough for most usage.”

X20

I suppose I don’t have to tell you who riflessifotografici are. I’ve found some of my favorite X-series reviews (and other brands too) on their website. Therefore I think Fujifilm Global made a good choice to take one of the riflessifotografici-guys for the X20 promotional video. Donato Chirulli talks on the new compact camera walking through the fascinating streets of Venice. You can see a sample shot and go to the video here at riflessifotografici.

[I’d like to remember you that Massimiliano Angeloni and Donato Chirulli will run the first events in Naples (13 April) and Rome (14 April) of the eXperience tour, the photographic roadshow (only in Italy) organized by Fujifilm. You can test Fuji’s X-series cameras, make some studio shots (with a model) and participate to the street photography workshop all for free. Just reserve your place at the event you want to participate, and enjoy your Fuji-day at the eXperience tour (click here).]

FR-reader Jonas wrote an X20 review on his blog. I’m glad to share it with you (click here). “I would NOT go above ISO 1600 with this camera, regardless of what PR reps, salesmen, and the likes tell you. Compare this to other 2/3′s and the x20 is a MUCH better performer. Compare it to the Sony RX100…. not so much!SOME PROS: Really sturdy build quality – It’s FAST! Fast AF, fast menus, fast write times. – OVF Overlay – The noise in high ISO’s is VERY good looking. Almost film-like. SOME CONS: Not the ISO performer its made out to be. The sensor size shows here! – Battery life is ridiculous. – No ND filter built in, like the x100/x100s.

Leica or Fuji?

Leica or Fuji? That is the question! Everyone has its own answer. You can read the point of view of nicole-struppert here:

“I will stick with Fuji! They make a brilliant job! Using the xpro1, x100 etc. is fun, it is light, fantastic lenses and the IQ is awesome […] I am looking forward to I stick with Fuji – for two reasons: First of all they make fantastic cameras and lenses and secondly they hear what customers say! They improved the X100 after getting feedback from Pro photographers and customers and worked together with Adobe to solve the RAW Processing problem. I just purchased the new x100S and I’m very curious to find out about the faster AF and improvements! […] Is Fuji the new Leica? In my opinion, NO – Leica will always be Leica. These are 2 different camera systems and brands… Owning a Leica is much more than owning a camera or a tool to take pictures with. You’ll get a hand crafted camera with soul. It is a lifestyle and everyone who ever owned a Leica knows what I try to say. “

Oh, and don’t forget the price difference. (check the Leica M9 price and specs: [shopcountry 10090]

The beauty and the beast! Petapixel X-E1 review

Now also petapixel (click here) tested the new X-E1. No doubt, great image quality. Great ISO performance. But also some quirks. For example the autofocus and the EVF.

Autofocus: The new update brought faster autofocus. And in good light conditions autofocus is decently fast and accurate: But “While shooting fast moving objects may still be a challenge, the autofocus will do the job in most everyday situations... Step into a dimly-lit environment, and the camera becomes a bit less predictable. It will be obedient to your focusing wishes most of the time, but sometimes it’s unable to get a lock on things you’d expect it to focus on. This doesn’t happen very often, but it’s frustrating when it does.”

EVF: Most of the time you won’t miss the OVF. But in darker settings the EVF starts becoming laggy and blurred.

The Eye Sensor: “If you set your “View Mode” to “Eye Sensor”, the camera defaults to the LCD screen but switches over to the EVF when it senses your face up against the camera. When you pull the camera away from your head, it quickly switches back. The quirk is that this handoff doesn’t happen during the image review period after you snap a shot. For DSLR users who are accustomed to “chimping,” you’ll find that you can’t.
Verdict: The most beautiful camera on the market, a true joy to use. It’s a a “fine DSLR replacement for everyday photography. Just make sure you can live with the slightly slower AF and the lack of an OVF. If you’re sure you can, then go out and buy this camera — it’s worth every penny.”

Exclusive Fujifilm APS-C size X-Trans CMOS sensor for superior color reproduction and image resolution

FUJIFILM X-E1 equipped with FUJIFILM X-Pro1 exactly the same 16.3 million pixel APS-C size X-Trans CMOS sensor. Its unique color filter array can not use the optical low-pass filter to reduce moiré and false color generated. The direct benefits of this design is the ability to very substantially increase the resolution of the digital camera, it is possible to bring you a more clear and bright perfect shooting.

Conventional color filter array using the arrangement of the 2×2 pixel unit, bring the greatest adverse impact in the highly ordered arrangement is moiré and pseudo color is often generated. Usually in the digital camera industry, the installation of a low-pass filter between the color filter and lens to effectively solve the problem of moiré and false color. However, the use of the low-pass filter, on the other hand will lead to a sharp decline in image resolution. As a veteran film maker Fujifilm X-Trans CMOS sensor design, using a unique similar to traditional silver halide film color filter array design the 6X6 pixel unit structure looks messy, and this state-of-the-art The disordered arrangement designed to fundamentally eliminate moiré and false color generated, so that the removal of the low-pass filter ripe. Finally, X-Trans CMOS sensor in the resolution of the sensor has been the greatest degree of improvement in the removal of the low-pass filter design. You may even be able to enlarge the image to 2700mm X 1800mm size no problem.

Unique color filter array design is also excellent in the photo noise control high sensitivity. In addition, in the role of the large size of the APS-C sensor, the user is able to get a clear prospect of a very beautiful bokeh effect, bokeh shallow depth of field shooting.

The Fuji X bayonet native will maximize the performance of the lens

Fujifilm X-mount system has a very short 17.7mm flange distance, and maximize the performance advantages of digital camera mirror.

Wider opening design allows the lens deep enough to insert them to the camera body about 7.5mm, followed by lens focal length shortened, and thus make the lens compact and lightweight design easier. The shortening also reduces the occurrence of the edges of the image resolution to reduce the phenomenon of the back focus.

How to Obtain Better Videos with Fujifilm X Cameras

GUEST POST FEATURE
Write Your Articles Directly On FujiRumors!

guest post by wilecoyote

Hello All!

In the most reviews of Fujifilm X Cameras that use the “old” X-Trans I and X-Trans II sensors it seems to be a consensus that the Cameras would produce videos of rather bad quality. Whereas the video quality of those cameras might not be on par with some of their best peers, there are some misconceptions regarding the video mode of Fujifilm X cameras and in this article I will briefly explain two factors that might help to obtain better looking videos.

The hints given below are verified with an X-E1 and X-T10, so I believe that they are applicable to all Fujifilm X cameras featuring an X-Trans I or II sensor.

1. Do not record in 1080p with 50fps or 60fps
Although the option to record video with 50/60 frames per second seems promising because of the initial assumption that more frames per second means somewhat “more” and therefore better quality video, it is not true in our case, unfortunately.

In fact, choosing 50fps or 60fps leads to a significant decrease of video quality! See the example below:

Bad_2
This is a framegrab from a video taken in 1080p 60fps mode with my X-T10
The same subject, but with 25fps
The same subject, but with 25fps

It is obvious that the Video recorded with 25fps shows significantly enhanced detail rendition and less moire in comparison to the one recorded with 60fps. The sample videos provided in most reviews are recorded at 50fps or 60fps, so I assume that most testers haven’t tried to record video at lower frame rates and therefore underrate the video quality.

It is not clear why the the video quality is decreased at higher frame rates, but an initial guess of mine would be that the camera’s processing power and/or sensor readout speed is not sufficient to create a hight quality readout and demosaicing within 1/60 second so that lower resolution pixel binning and demosaicing is used.

So it is a good idea to set your camera’s video framerate to 25fps or 30 fps.

2. Process the video with full tonal range
