Fujifilm Manager: “APS-C Limit is Not 26 Megapixel. Fujifilm GFX100 will Amaze You. AI Within 3 Years. Shooting Style Over Specs”

Pixel Village, who recently gave us some insights from the Fujifilm factory in Japan, now published their interview with Fujifilm manager Toshihisa Iida, Jun Watanabe and Keitaro So.

It’s a 33 minutes long video that I have summed up below for those of you, who are in a hurry right now.

DPReview Fujifilm Managers Interview: “No Need to Open X Mount, AI and Global Shutter are the Future, GFX100 Within End of June”

DPReview interviewed Toshi Iida, Makoto Oishi and Shin Udono. Here are the main points (full interview at dpreview here):

Medium Format

  • Full Frame and Medium Format will coexist
  • GFX 50R sales look very promising
  • FF is 1/3 of market in terms of value, slightly growing
  • MF was 1%, but doubled after GFX introduction
  • 70% of MF buyers were coming from other brands, mainly DSLR, and the GFX is their additional system
  • 20% of GFX users are professionals, 80% non-professionals (especially GFX 50R users)
  • Fujifilm wants to increase professional base, also thanks to Capture One support and with future GFX 100
  • Fujifilm GFX 100 should show the potential of medium format
  • FF can reach 70-80 Megapixel
  • GFX lenses designed for 100MP resolution
  • Fujifilm GFX100 will be available before the end of June
  • Fujifilm GFX100 target is commercial photographers, fashion, landscapes, but also more general purpos
  • GFX 100 will shoot at 16bit RAW. Benefit noticeable mostly at low ISO and deep shadow detail. 4 times the amount of data, 14 bit lets you shoot faster, which is appropriate for APS-C

Fujifilm GFX100 Pixel Shift Multishot not Available at Launch, but Coming Later via Firmware Update

Fujifilm GFX 100

The deadline is June. Since then, the Fujifilm GFX100 must hit the stores.

Currently Fujifilm is working hard on the firmware and I asked the source, who told us in October 2018, that Fujifilm wants to implement pixel shift multishot in the Fujifilm GFX100, at which stage the development of the pixel shift mutlishot is.

Here is what it told me:

  • sensor/pixel shift multishot is easier to achieve with Bayer sensors than with X-Trans
  • the Fujifilm GFX100 will probably not have pixel shift multishot at launch
  • pixel shift multishot should come later on via firmware update

With pixel shift multishot the camera shoots several images while shifting the image sensor and combines them to generate images with a higher resolution than is possible with regular shooting.

Fujifilm GFX 100 official and rumored specs

Fujifilm XF 16-80mmF4 and Fujinon GF 50mmF3.5 to be Released This Fall – First Specs Online and Additional Fuji GFX100 Images

Fujinon Lenses

The FujiRumors CP+ 2019 live coverage continues, and this time I have found the answer to the question, when the Fujinon XF16-80mm f/4 and GF 50mm f/3.5 will be released at the Japanese site capa.getnavi here:

  • XF 16-80mmF4 – to be released in fall 2019
  • GF 50mmF3.5 – to be released in fall 2019

Those perfect travel lenses come to late for our summer trips. Digested this bad news? Then let’s move on!

The Japanese site also shared Fujifilm GFX100 images and media slides (in Japanese), but don’t worry, FujiRumors has already leaked them all (and even more in detail) a few weeks ago in this article.

I did translate all the Japanese slides, and there is nothing that we do not know already about the Fujifilm GFX100.. For additional GFX 100 images you can also check out the Polish site optyczne.

What I will translate for you, though, are the media slides of the lenses.

Fujifilm FF180005 Registered: Fujifilm GFX100 or Surprise Camera?

Fujifilm FF180005

Fujifilm just registered a camera with the code name “FF180005” here, as spotted by nokishita.

Fujifilm has already announced they will release the Fujifilm GFX100 in the first half of 2019, so we can assume that’s the camera that hides behind the mysterious code name.

FujiRumors has exclusively leaked the entire Fujifilm GFX100 media slides, with lot of details in it. This can’t be found anywhere on the web, since it is confidential Fujifilm material.

However, the “FF180005” could be also another not yet rumored Fujifilm camera.

Want to find it out? Well, then just follow FujiRumors on Facebook, Instagram, RSS-feed and Twitter.

We already knew that the Fujifilm GFX100 will be the first medium format camera able to shoot 4K/30p, but now Italian Fujifilm X photographer Luca Bracali and Italian store NewOldCamera dropped a few more specs from the GPP event in Dubai here (Luca) and here (NOC).

Lucky me that Italian is one of the 3 languages I manage much better than English (and poor you, who have to live with all kind of English errors I make), so here is the translation of the main new specs unveiled by Luca and NOC.

  • 4K/30p with H265 codec and 400 mbps
  • shipping within the end June
  • price: €10,000
  • 5 fps continuous shooting (GFX50S and GFX50R shoot at 3fps)

Hasselblad X1D MK II Coming to Challenge Fujifilm GFX100

Hasselblad X1D MK II

The original Hasselblad X1D flopped in reviews and at the box office, so I was wondering if we will ever see a successor.

Luckily, as spotted by mirrrorlessrumors, the Hasselblad X1D MK II has been officially registered.

Mirrorlessrumors thinks it will feature the same 100 megapixel sensor of the Fujifilm GFX100.

Hasselblad X1D, Any Chance against Fujifilm GFX?

The Fujifilm GFX system dominated the medium format market overnight, thanks to an attractive price (for medium format standards) and a solid performance, unlike the Hasselblad X1D, a stylish, but buggy and slow camera (overheating, 7 seconds start-up time etc.).

Hasselblad tried to address some issues via firmware update, but it’s clear that only the Hasselblad X1D MK II can really introduce those improvements needed to make it a proper performer.

I doubt, though, the Hasselblad X1D MK II will have an aggressive pricing, like the Fujifilm GFX.

In fact, Hasselblad has only one mirrorless camera line (the X1D) and development costs must be very high, whereas Fujifilm shares the R&D costs for the GFX with its APS-C system. Hence, new features and software enhancement introduced to the X system, can be simply taken over to the Fujifilm GFX.

This is why I believe Fujifilm will always have substantial price advantage over Hasselblad.

And Hasselblad should definitely stick a proper mechanical shutter into the Hasselblad X1D MK II. I mean, just check out here in our GFX group, how extremely popular the use of old full frame and medium format glass on the Fujifilm GFX is.

The mechanical shutter opens up lots of possibilites to experiment, try, test… or, in other words, have fun with third party glass.

But we will see. Maybe the X1D MK II will have a global shutter ;).

Most important for us customers is that the Fujifilm GFX gets some hard competition that forces Fujifilm to work harder and better, so fingers crossed the Hasselblad X1D Mark II will be a freaking amazing camera. :)
