Let’s Talk Film Simulations: Are they Really Good only For JPEG Shooters? Vote Your Favorite Film Simulation!

Let’s Talk (and Vote) Film Simulations

Given the recent Fujifilm announcement of a new film simulation Classic Negative coming to Fujifilm X-Pro3, and the latest rumor that says older X-Processor 4 cameras will get it via firmware update, the Film Simulation talk is again en vogue here on FujiRumors.

Also the recent Canon vs Fujifilm colors shootout has raised the color science topic again.

In fact, film simulations are a much loved feature among the Fujifilm community, and we have written several articles about them in the past:

  • click hereAn Introduction to Fujifilm’s Film Simulation Modes
  • click here – Meet Minami-San, Fujifilm’s Color Guru Since 50 Years and Who is Now Bringing Fuji’s Color Science from Film to Digital

Now, some say film simulations are only for JPEG shooters, but I don’t agree.

Many love to work with Fujifilm RAW files by first applying a film simulation profile in Lightroom or Capture One and then edit from there. I do it like this too, and it saves me a lot of time. Fujifilm gets the colors right for me, and I just fine tune the rest of the image (contrast, sharpening, etc).

And Classic Negative?

Well, the very first samples look promising for me, and I am curious to see if it can climb high in the favorite ranking of Fujifilm X Shooters.

The current most loved film simulations can be seen (and voted) down below.

Personally, I am in love with Classic Chrome. But there is one film simulation, that I kind of re-discovered this summer, and is now often replacing Provia and Velvia in my photography: Astia!

Astia sits kind of between Provia and Velvia, giving colors a bit more pop compared to Provia, but not as much punch as Velvia.

Astia replaces Velvia also in my landscape photography, whenever I have a person (mostly my wife) in my frame, as Astia gives me the best balance between punchy colors and good skin tones.

But there are film simulations for every taste, and I am happy to see Fujifilm committed to deliver more of them. Classic Negative looks awesome, and I look forward what the future brings :).

Down below you’ll also find a video of Dan Bailey, saying why you should use film simulations.

When FujiRumors leaked the 100% accurate Fujifilm X-Pro3 sketches, our source draw a “C” instead of an “H” on the ISO dial. Well, we could already see it in previous images, but now we can see it even more clearly.

Other than that, not much new.

No Joke: Official JOKER Movie Images taken With Fujifilm X Series Gear ;)

The Joker

Yesterday I was out with my wife watching the Joker movie, and I was so impressed by Joaquin Phoenix acting performance, that, once home, I googled for stills taken of Joaquin on the set of Joker.

I quickly stumbled on a series of brilliant images take taken by photographer Niko Tavernise (website500pxTwitterInstagram).

Then I checked the EXIF data, something familiar showed up:

So I kept going through the images at and I saw…

…. that many images were taken with Fuji X-T2 and Fujifilm XF50-140. A few of them can be seen below.

Niko also used the Sony A9 with FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, but as a Fujifilm blog, I’ll share only some of the Fujifilm images.

Congratz to Niko for his stunning set of images and make sure to check out his work at: website500pxTwitterInstagram.

image EXIF found at the following sites: theverge here, here and manintown here.

Speaking of Fujifilm behind the set, check out also:

New Fujifilm FF190005 Camera Registered – Two Fuji Cameras Coming Soon?

Fujifilm has registered yet another camera, the FF190005.

This means we now have two more cameras (in addition to the X-Pro3) coming in not so distant future:

Usually it takes 1 to 3 months (but in some cases also 6 months), until a registered camera is officially announced.

Many are dreaming of Fujifilm X-H2, Fujifilm X-T4, Fujifilm X100V (X200). Follow FujiRumors, to find out the truth ;).

Sigma Will Probably Continue to Ignore Fujifilm X, and Fujifilm is Happy About it

We recently reported about this (google translated) tweet, that seemed to indicate a possibility that Sigma will make Fujifilm APS-C X Mount lenses.

However, I was skeptical, and told you that this is nothing that I can confirm.

In fact, I also reminded you what Sigma officially said:

This is in line with what Fujifilm said, since they declared that they do not want to disclose their protocols with other lens manufacturers:

The update today:

It seems like the (machine translated) tweet we reported about was inaccurate, since in reality what he said is (thanks Mistral):

Tanaka-san is simply noting that Sigma are proposing their APS-C mirrorless lenses in Canon EF-M (very soon), Leica L (next year), µ4/3 and Sony E mount, therefore the only APS-C mirrorless mount let aside by Sigma is the Fujifilm X mount.

What Tanaka says, is that due to various circumstances it’s hard for Sigma to make X mount glass.

There is a lot I love about Fujifilm, but not this kind of protectionism.

Fujifilm vs Canon Colors Blind Test Battle – Here are The Results!

Fujifilm VS Canon – Colors

Canon and Fujifilm both have excellent reputation, when it comes to color science.

Now Andrew compared Fujifilm with Canon RAW as well as JPEG colors.

What we can say ahead:

  • with RAW files, it’s harder for people to have a clear preference
  • with JPEG files, the differences are stronger

The JPEG comparison is more indicative for the so called “color science“, since with RAW files also the converter plays a role.

So, if you don’t have time right now to make the full blind test, I recommend you to go to minute 5:37 of the video and make the JPEG comparison only.

Before I disclose my results, I’d like to say that:

  • I consider Canon colors excellent, and if I should switch brand tomorrow morning , just for the sake of colors, I’d go Canon!

*** TOP TIP ***
turn off “truetone display” on your Mac/iPhone

The Problem

Since I love you so much, in order to give you a more objective feedback, I went through all the comments on the video, and tried to sum them up in a ranking.

It was not easy to summarize, because:

  • sometimes people did not specify enough (example: “Canon is best”)
  • In case of comments like “Canon is best“, I assigned a JPEG point to Canon, although I am not sure those, who made such comments, really made the test
  • In case of Fujifilm, sometimes people did not specify if Classic Chrome or Provia. In which case, I assumed they mean standard Provia
  • In case of close results (just 1 or 2 points of difference), I gave it a “same same”

Overall, reading the comments, I had the impression that those, who said to be Fujifilm shooters, had a very open minded and honest approach to the test. Bravo!

Top 3 Selling Cameras, Lenses, Software and Accessories for September on FujiRumors

Here is the list of top selling gear and software on FujiRumors for September 2019.

TOP 3 SELLING…

Top Accessories

Top Fujifilm Series Cameras

The crazy X-H1 rebate is over, so I guess that’s the last month, where we will see the Fujifilm X-H1 on the top of the ranking.

Top Fujinon Lenses

The brand new Fujinon XF16-80 takes the first spot. It’s apparently a best seller, since Top Manager Toshihisa Iida said at the recent Fujifilm X Summit, that pre-orders are high, and the factory is working hard to try to match initial demand as fast as possible.

Top X Mount Third Party Lenses

Top Software

  1. Luminar 4
  2. Capture One Pro 12
  3. Adobe Creative Cloud

Fake sky replacement and automatic intelligent selective clarity seem to be features people love, since they catapulted Luminar 4 at the top selling position, dethroning Capture One Pro 12.

Sigma Fujifilm X Mount Lenses Coming?

Sigma Fujifilm

Not too far away, Sigma CEO said:

But here on FujiRumors we told you:

Well, it seems there is hope, since at thisistanaka said on twitter here:

16mmF1.4, 30mmF1.4, and 56mmF1.4 have already been released for SONY and OLYMPUS, but they are tailored to EF-S mounts. The rest is Fuji’s XF mount, but this seems to be difficult due to various circumstances. In any case, I was curious that SIGMA started working on Canon’s mirrorless camera lens.

It’s not clear if this really means they will 100% surely release X mount lenses. But surely we hope for it, although Fujifilm clearly said:

Fujifilm does need to share X mount protocols with third-parties, since we offer already lots of glass. But if third-parties reverse-engineer AF lenses for X mount, that’s good from a customers’ point of view

This is part of our little curiosity and famous X shooter corners, and I think you’ll enjoy this one particularly.

It’s definitely worth watching in itself for the photography and to learn more about David’s life and art.
