What’s Next from Fujifilm? Big 2017 / 2018 Rumor Overview and Check

Ok guys… after the major announcement a few days ago, it’s time to see what is left, and what was correct (or not).

but first….

Huge Thanks!

Fujirumors is not only a great source for Fujifilm to get feedback about their products and early feedback thanks to rumors, but also a place that keeps the whole community excited and informed. And none of this would be possible without everybody, who helped me with the rumors and the news. Huge thanks to all of you for guiding me safly through the stormy Fuji waters.

The Facts

  • 670 blog post published so far in 2017
  • 84 rumors shared in 2017
  • 14 rumors still to be verified (and 1 out of ranking)
  • 65 correct rumors out of 69 verifiable rumors
  • 4 wrong rumors out of 69 verifiable rumors
  • 94% correct rumors

What To Expect From Fujifilm…
… and 2 Notes

The Ultimate Fuji X: I know that this camera was in Fuji’s plans, and I know they scrapped it in favor or the Fujifilm X-T2S (which is basically an “ultimate X light”). However, I decided to already move the ultimate X rumors in the wrong rumor section, because I need a public statement of Fujifilm that such plans existed to share it as a correct rumor (as it happened with the X-Pro1s)… and also because otherwise the wrong rumor section would have been empty :)

Fujinon 33mmF1: In January, I reported that the 33/1 has been scrapped. As a consequence, I launched a huge lens request poll, where the 33/1 became the most voted prime lens by the FR-community. The results might have convinced Fujifilm to think about it again, as a rumor recently suggested. Hence you will find 2 rumors down below… the one that says the 33/1 has been canceled, and the one that says there is a little bit hope again.

Godox XT1-F Trigger & Speedlights Reviews :: FlashQ System Review :: Fujifilm EF-X500 High Speed Sync (Flash Zone)

Godox XT1-F for Fujifilm... a Best Seller at BHphoto
Godox XT1-F for Fujifilm… a Best Seller at BHphoto

Flash

Godox is making many Fujifilm shooters very happy at the moment, and I quite regulary get emails of Fuji X and G shooters switching from other brands (such as Profoto), to Godox. And given the huge interest Godox arose amongst the Fuji community, I think it’s high time to share again a Godox-centric roundup.

But before we dive into the Godox world, some reviews from the non-Godox world (EF-X500 included)… all fresh from the internet.

For older stuff just search fro EF-X500 on fujirumors.com, and you will find links to EF-X500 reviews like the one at Robert Hall Photography Youtube and also check out fotograficoweb’s “Fujifilm EF-X500 Shoe Mount Flash Review” at fujirumors.com)

EF-X500 and FlashQ System

GODOX

  • Damien Lovegrove Godox XT1-F feedback shared at the GFX group here: “XT1F units have arrived. I have literally shot 1000s of frames now with the Godox system in HSS and normal sync using the TT350F and the X1TF. I can confirm that on balance I am finding about ⅔ of a drop off in flash output from regular sync to HSS across the AD200 and AD600 units. In some situations I’m not seeing any loss of exposure and in others a small reduction in exposure. I’m talking about going from 1/125th at f/16 to 1/500 at f/8 or 1/4000 at f/2.8 etc. I need to get out of the studio and shoot some real location portraits.”
  • David Ward Godox feedback shared at the GFX group here: “This is a follow on to my testing the X1Tf, TT350f, TT685f and V860IIf with a Fujifilm GFX. Now with the XT-2; As I expected, the X1Tf, TT350f, TT685f and V860IIf all work with the XT-2 as they did with the GFX. This confirms that the TTL flash capabilities of the latest generation Fujifilm cameras are consistent. Even though I don’t have access to an X Pro 2 its on the compatible list from Godox along with the XT-2 so there should be no surprises. The larger speedlites are big and heavy on the XT-2. I compared the TT350f and V860IIf in M mode with the flash head aimed directly at Manny. As expected considering the guide numbers, there is a one EV difference. That’s good news because it means that anytime the V860II would be firing at less than half power, the TT350 is up to the job. Naturally two AA batteries are a far cry from the Lithium Ion battery in the V860II, but the weight difference is significant. I’m going to confirm how everything works Friday on a wedding shoot. Ceremony outside so some chances for fill with CL200, or speedlites. Then CL200, and TT350 and V680II during the reception inside. As noted with the GFX, setting X1Tf TTL FEC also changes the value in the camera. With the speedlites it acts as expected. FEC in camera is additive to whatever is set via the X1Tf with no changes from the flash to the groups.”

Nikon to Fujifilm X-T2 Switchers Guide

Introduction

Switching systems is a big step no matter how well you know photography. Reviews do a good job of explaining how good the camera is, but they aren’t very good at explaining the learning curve which may or may not be painful coming from one system to another.

For Nikon switchers, I’ve tried to cover the differences in article. It’s written primarily coming from a full frame Nikon (or the D750 in my case) so it may not be applicable to all Nikon’s. It’s a little long but hopefully I’ve covered it in enough detail to keep everyone happy.

What’s Next From Fujifilm? … and First 2017 Rumor Check (100% Correct Rumors)

Two or three times a year, I feel like I need to put a bit of order in the whirlwind of rumors, and give you guys a well-ordered overview of the rumors shared so far this year by FujiRumors.

It’s also the opportunity for me to check back the accuracy of all the rumors I’ve shared this year.

So high time for some facts:

  • 229 blog post published so far in 82 days (2017)
  • 36 rumors shared in 82 days (2017)
  • 12 rumors still to be verified
  • 24 correct rumors out of 24 verifiable rumors
  • 0 wrong rumors out of 24 verifiable rumors
  • 100% correct rumors

Sure, there are still 12 rumors that have to be verified, not all will be correct (because they are wrong or Fujifilm will change plans), but I’d say of the 12 remaining, I wouldn’t be surprised if most are correct.

A big hug goes to all sources, from the most anonmyous to the most trusted one, who decided to help me to find the right path in the fake rumor jungle and to put excitement in the Fuji world by sharing accurate rumors. You make being an Fuji shooter even more fun :-)

Also, thanks to everybody, who spotted some interesting Fuji related news/rumor/deal/review on the web, and took his/her time to drop me an email with the link to it. Much appreciated… and feel free to keep it up.

thanks to all,

NOTE 2: The firmware announcement of March 23 says that this feature will come via Firmware, but only to X-T2. This sounds very strange to me. Could be an error of Fujifilm. I’ll wait for the firmware to come out, and if indeed the X-Pro2 does not get this feature, move this rumor in the wrong rumors section

Fujifilm GFX Vs. Hasselblad X1D User Mini Review: “Forget About the Cons, Run and Buy the GFX” :: Fuji Guys GFX Top Features Video

Fuji Guys GFX Top Features Video

The Fuji Guys just published the Fujifilm GFX Top Features Video. Check it out on youtube here.

Hasselblad X1D vs Fujifilm GFX

User Review by Ahmed G., shared at the Fujifilm GFX Facebook Group here.

NEW: For everything Fujifilm GFX related, I’ve just lauched the dedicated GFX facebook page: 100% GFX news and rumors 24×7.

Ahmad’s Instagram / FlickR

NOTE 1: Sorry about my English because it is not my native language
NOTE 2: The comparison shots have been taken different times and in not well controlled conditions. They should just give an idea of the details difference between lenses.

I have used Hasselblad X1D for one month and had problems with the body and also shutter of the 90mm lens. Now I am using Fujifilm GFX for sometime with the 3 current lenses.

Let me explain my user notes. I am not an expert or professional photographer, but i have used the best 35mm lenses in years like coastal optics, voigtlander apo lanthar,Zeiss otus line and leica apo lenses.

With 35mm format the quality mostly comes with the lenses. For example Leica M 240 doesn’t have a state of art sensor but when you use it with a 50mm Apo Summicron you get medium format like output as a system.B ut if you use it a less corrected lens you will get a moderate FF look and quality.

With medium format the quality is mostly related to sensor. Of course lenses are good as well but at least for these two brands new line up are not as refined as the lenses I wrote above. (maybe fuji 120mm macro is an exception). But when they combined with the sensor they shine.

So let’s compare Hasselblad with Fuji (still no raw??)

Hasselblad X1D

Cons:

  • Plastic parts are fragile for scratches.
  • Lenses are slow to get good subject separation
  • Battery capacity is low.
  • You can not have bokeh circles with the lenses. They look like honeycomb. Maybe because of the leaf shutter.
  • 45mm and 90mm both have focus shift.Especially at short distances.
  • Files are flat and not lifelike.Dimenson is not there at all.
  • Lcd has a low resolution.
  • Evf is not better than sony a7x series.
  • Slow start-up time like computer.
  • After too many shuts body becomes hot.
  • Strange shutter noise.Ahhrrr ???

Pros:

  • Leica M like body. Build quality and style are exceptional
  • Super easy menu. It is Apple like.
  • Very good ergonomics on buttons and grip.
  • Great AF accuracy. Great working AF light for low light works
  • Super easy to use.
  • Nearly shake free because of leaf shutter.
  • Superb use of Nikon ttl flashes and profoto b1 up to 1/2000 sec
  • Colors are real as you see with your own eyes when you use Phocus software.

Fujifilm GFX

Cons:

  • Ugly style and ergonomics. Play and delete buttons are so bad placed.
  • To much buttons and crowded menus.
  • The position of buttons really sucks(especially play, delete and ev +\- ) by default.Yes you can redesign them but not all. Delete can not be arranged for a different button and you can not reach it comfortably with your right hand when holding the grip. You have to use your lef hand. So button line up of default is con, to re-arrange them is a pro
  • Focus is fast but not accurate especially in low light.
  • Heavy after Leica bıt for dslr users it is ok. Especially lenses.
  • Because of bad ergonomics and the huge lenses(compared to Leica) it is impossible to use small bags for street and travel photography.

Pros:

  • Forget about the cons and run to buy it?
  • Punchy and lifelike files even no raw for now.63mm and 120mm has that special leica pop ??
  • Super subject separation.
  • Great shutter sound
  • Buttons are what you want them to be (the ability to re-arrange them)
  • Detail is more refined and corrected than Hasselblad (hassy sometimes seem like to much Photoshop sharpened)

They are both have Cons and Pros but GFX is more like a 3th generation product which has less problem and very ready to go a big photo trip. Hassy is like a prototype with problems and makes you thing to go to a photo trip with a back up camera system.

Fuji files are more life-like as film but Hassy is more clinical. Fuji is a great upgrade camera for APS-C and FF users but Hasselblad is a back up camera for real studio medium format users.

These Is what I feel about two of medium format cameras. Maybe some of you will feel different.

7 New ” Fujifilm GFX Challenges” Teaser Videos

Fujifilm just added 7 videos to their Fujifilm GFX Challenges series (see the first series here).

  • Ivan Joshua Loh (commercial work – studio): Surprisingly small. Autofocus very fast. Focus well also in low light. Shows super-details in images (video includes crops & pixel peeping). Perfect for commercial work. Uses Profoto – Video here.
  • Gary Heery (Macro – Studio): The IQ is brilliant! Can easily become his full-time camera. Video here
  • Per-Anders Jörgensen (Food Photography – Outdoor People Portrait): He likes its versatility and lightweight. Bigger sensor, better bokeh. Video here
  • Romeo Balancourt (Potraits – Architecture): What strikes him, is that the GFX is razor-sharp in the focus area, but the transition is smooth, with a very nice bokeh, very subtle. Uses ACROS. Compact, easy to bring around for his personal work. 120mm amazingly sharp. On his FF DSLR he always has to add sharpness before he sends the images to his client… but with the GFX he does not need to add sharpness at all. Makes pig prints with absolutely no problems. – Video here
  • Luciano Romano (Art Portraits – Architecture): Very intuitive to use. Light and silent. Great colors. Video here
  • Minoru Kobayashi (Photographing Cars): The output created by the GFX is not like the rest. Rich tonality like none other. Natural and silky gradation. – Video here
  • Victor Liu (Landscape): A hardcore weather sealing test under snow in freezing temperatures. No words, “just” images. Video here
