Fujifilm (Currently) Planing a Fujinon XF200mm F2 :: POLL – F2 or F2.8

Recently Fujifilm updated the roadmap, and shows for 2018 a ultra wide angle zoom (the rumored 8-16) and a telephoto prime lens.

An old rumor of over 1 year ago, shared by source, right in the past, said that on Fuji’s internal roadmap it is a 200mmF2 lens. Well, I got further indication now, that it is still currently planed as F2 lens.

However, as the source wants to make clear, these things can change very quickly at Fujifilm, since they are still investigating how profitable various options would be, so an F2.8 option is still on the table… as also a Fujifilm Manager also said here.

And as usual, when Fujifilm is in trouble, I know that you guys are always willing to help with your contributions… and we have multiple evidence that the Fujifilm Management not only reads us, but eventually also makes decisions based on your feedback.

So, here is a poll….

Of course, keep in mind, that if you vote for the 200/2, you will get a bigger and more expensive lens as opposed to the relatively smaller and more affordable 200/2.8. Each lens has its Pros and Cons… but vote only for the one you would buy.

I would buy a...

Preface:

About a year ago while hiking in Zion Utah, I came across a big horn sheep herd, I took some pictures with the Fuji 90mm at far too close a distance (around 4 meters), since then I’ve been hooked and keen on trying out wildlife photography as a pastime. This is what has led me into the point I am at now, with a Fuji 100-400mm a 2x teleconverter and a cropped sensor, equating to ≈ 1200mm

Equipment: Fuji X-Pro2, Fuji 100-400mm, Fuji 2x TC

Look and feel:

The combination is very easy to use, it’s still light, although too long for most bags, and wildlife begs for your camera and lens to be ready and set up, with hood on and camera setup it makes this a large, yet light package.

Durability:

Hiked through the mountains of Yellowstone Nation Park for 10 days, got rained on very hard (way to much for comfort) and the combination kept up with nary a problem in sight. It seems to be apt for the job.

Sharpness:

Well this is tricky, the Fuji 100-400 is sharp, but at the 400mm end it’s not as sharp, the setup although fantastic for shooting hand-held, isn’t bright enough to keep ISO down and shutter speeds up, not to mention swinging 1200mm is tricky at best and your movement is amplified greatly and you can overwork the Optical Stabilization quickly with quick jerks and movements, but I got really good results hand-held @1200mm’s without wearing myself out because of weight and size, I would call that a good give and take.

Image Stabilization:

It’s hands down amazing, it’s not magic, you can’t swing this combination and hope for the best, but I spoke with many photographers all of which were posting against something or had tripods, at the distances we were sharing my photos were more clear, and usually much closer.

Reach:

1200mm can be shot handheld with ease, and its much easier to fill up the frame at safer distances.

Auto Focus:

It works, and I know this sounds rather silly, but you have to spend a lot of money on the DSLR side to get 1200mm to autofocus (from what I know). It’s actually pretty fast and accurate in good light. It’s amazing to think that it is contrast based to be honest.

Conclusion:

I couldn’t be happier with this combination, I’m truly hoping that fuji comes out with a 300mm f2.8, I would buy that setup in a heart beat. As is though, Fuji is really moving quickly with filling in all the gaps with lenses, they are making wonderful optics and they truly work well and are a pleasure to use.

RUMOR: Fujifilm working on a XF200mm… F2 (!) lens :-) – Source Right in the Past

200mm

A source, who was right in the past, confirms (thanks!) that there is indeed an XF 200mm in Fuji’s internal Roadmap (like rumored back in October here). The source also said it will be an F2.0 lens.

And since Fuji is somehow reluctant to update its lens roadmap, I’ll do that for you… you’re welcome ;) .

X-T1 FW will make Video Button a FN-button + Internal Fuji Lens Roadmap with 8mm, 200mm and… 33mmF1.0!

rurmoad

OK X-folks… after the latest announcements, I’ve updated my rumor ranking and saw that I’ve shared 87,27% correct rumors.

That’s waaaaay too high for a rumor site, and so I decided to take a little risk, and share a rumor I’ve just received from an anonymous source with nick-name (thanks a lot for sharing, btw :-) ).

The good thing is: it won’t take long to see if the information shared is correct or not… we just have to wait and see, if the X-T1 firmware will make the video button a function button.

But here is the whole story:

X-T1 FIRMWARE

FN

As you know, Fuji said there will be a new Firmware coming soon. Mostly it’s all about adding XF35mmF2 compatibility to current X-series cameras. However, there might be some extra tidbits, at least for X-T1 shooters.

In fact, the anonymous source says that:

A new firmware update for the X-T1 that will make the video button a function button… as well as some other unspecified updates!

LENS ROADMAP

The source also shares information about an Internal Fuji Roadmap.

there is an internal fujifilm lens roadmap that includes a 8mm, a 200mm and the 33mm.

Yep, it’s the 33mmF1.0. However, according to the source, Fuji is still working to fix issues like AF-speed, and at least this source says that it’s not sure that the XF33mmF1.0 will ever see the light of day! But I’m confident (read this rumor).

INSTAX WIDE

No plans for a wide instax printer at this stage.

AF-tracking comparison: X-T1 with XF 18-135 and XF 55-200 vs 5DMKIII and Canon 70-200mm F2.8 II

 photo dog_zpscac8e4f9.jpg

Ben Cherry (website) tested the AF-tracking of the X-T1 with [shoplink 12892]XF 55-200[/shoplink] and a prototype XF 18-135mm WR vs the action combo [shoplink 13457]Canon 5D Mark III[/shoplink] with the $2,500 Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens.

The subject is a dog running full speed towards the X-T1 or 5dMkIII. The results? Ben says: “So how did the X-T1 and the latest telephoto lenses hold up against the ultimate action combo? Well I have to say I am extremely impressed by the results. So much so I’m not sure whether people can tell the difference.” Consider that Ben did NOT enable the HIGH PERFORMANCE mode, which makes AF faster.

But Ben doesn’t reveal which test series was shot with which lens.

In fact he just launced this contest: “Guess which is which – If you have twitter then tweet your answer with #2fujis1canon. At the end of the week I will reveal the answer. Remember the three options are: 70-200 (canon), 55-200 (fuji) and 18-135 (prototype, fuji). Allocate one lens to option 1, 2 and 3.”

So start tweeting ;-)

For those who do not use twitter, here is a poll for you. Check out the 3 AF-tracking series at bencherryphotos and then feel free to come back and vote the poll.

NOTE: To anyone out there, who wants to make such comparisons. It happens that reviewers do not enable the “HIGH PERFORMANCE” mode on their X-series camera. If you do such a test, you must enable it, as it will considerably improve the AF-performance of the camera… btw, every X-shooter should use it. You’ll drain a bit more battery life, but it’s worth the extra performance. It’s one of the many many tips and tricks Rico shared in his brand new X-E2 book here (German Version at dpunkt here).

UDPATE: Here are the resutls: Lens 1 – Fujifilm 18-135mm prototype / Lens 2 – Canon 70-200mm / Lens 3 – Fujifilm 55-200mm: “To conclude – For me the 5D3 is still the daddy, it instantly finds the subjects and tracks accurately. Whereas the X-T1 can sometimes take a while to find the subject but once it has, it will track very well, hitting the subject the vast majority of the time. Once there are greater auto focus zones on the X-T1, like the 5D3, then I think the tracking capabilities will vastly improve. To bring it back to dogs, the 5D3 is like my springer spaniel, it is just happy to be out running around and will respond to any call I give no matter what. While the X-T1 is like my labrador, loyal as anything but if you want it to respond to a call quickly then an obvious treat is required (though the high performance setting would have improved its responsiveness)!”
