Fotodiox Launches Several G-Mount Adapters :: Fujifilm GFX Final Release Date February 28 (PRESS RELEASE)

GFX ADAPTER

Fuji Guy Billy is one of Fujifilm GFX members, and he shared the image above on the group. There are many adapters coming for the GFX, especially made by Fotodiox.

Here are some of them:

Overall, there is a lot happening in the world of adapters for the GFX. A short recap:

  • Fujifilm launched its own Hasselblad adapter for GFX, to allow you to use leaf shutter lenses on the GFX.
  • Images of more adapters for Leica M, Zeiss Otus, Mamiya, Schneider-Kreuznach started to appear on the web, and have been first shared on the amazing GFX facebook group here and FujiRumors here.
  • A rumor I got says that Fringer plans a G-mount / Contax 645 smart adapter (full auto)
  • I’ve also shared with you a Chinese test that includes images taken with many different adapters for GFX, such as Mamiya, Schneider-Kreuznach, Zeiss Otus and more at blog.sina translations – NOTE: on my computer, the images are visible only on the original Chinese version.
  • Some fellow X-shooters are already developing 3D printed adapters…. and they work just fine

GFX FINAL RELEASE DATE

There was a bit of confusion about when the GFX and lenses will be released. Now Japan issued a press release, where they say the Medium Format system will hit the market on February 28. AmazonUS also says they will start shipping on February 28. BHphoto says March 1 and Adorama February 24.

So everything more or less as originally planed. Seems that Fujifilm got it right this time… or that pre-orders are not high, and hence they have no problem to deliver to customers.

GFX Technologies #1 -The Secrets of the New Fujifilm GFX Sensor

Fujifilm just launched a new series about the Fujifilm GFX, the “GFX Technologies” series. Episode one is all about the GFX sensor, which is different compared to the other 44×33 MF sensor, because:

  • The sensor itself has the surface size of 43.8×32.9mm, but the shape of the sensor unit is different for the GFX 50S. Typically the sensor is mounted to the silicon circuit with terminals placed on both sides of the sensor. But in the case of GFX, the sensor is mounted to the silicon circuit with the terminals placed on the back side of the sensor. This allows not only the sensor unit, but also the silicon circuit to be smaller in size.
  • In order to effectively process the lights, the size of micro-lenses haven been reduced and more spaces have been created between each pixel. This is one reason why the images appear so sharp when taken by GFX even though the pixel counts are the same. You may wonder about the negative impact for sensitivity and S/N if the micro-lenses are smaller in size. There is no need for such concern. The pixel size is big enough to receive enough lights without making micro-lenses any bigger. This optimization is only possible for the medium format sensor.
  • The photic saturation point of the sensor is extended and wider dynamic range is realized as a result. The dynamic range becomes 1/3 step wider. This wider dynamic range is a result of extended photic saturation point, so the images are 1/3 tougher against over-exposure. This extended photic saturation becomes most effective when the sensitivity is set at ISO 100
  • The camera is not equipped with the phase-detection pixels, but the autofocus speed is quite fast for a medium format camera nonetheless. One of the reasons for this is the increased sensor readout speed from 130fps to 200fps. Our sensor is customized so that faster readout is realized during autofocus. The speed is slower than DSLRs with dedicated phase detection autofocus, but it is much more accurate than that of the DSLR.

Fujifilm GFX :: Power to The Images… and Nathan Elson GFX First Look Video!

GFX First Look Video

Nathan Elson just shared his (pre-production) Fujifilm GFX first look at his youtube channel here. Here are some of his findings:

  • Batteries worked well also in extreme cold, and the whole camera performed incredibly well in the extreme cold
  • outside in good light AF worked really well. In studio and lower light, sometimes it hunt. Nathan also underlines that his GFX is still pre-prodcution, and that he used the smallest focus point possible. But when it does hit the focus, the accuracy is amazing, all over the frame. Overall he was super-impressed by the AF, especially since it’s pre-production
  • He wishes a faster sync speed
  • surprisingly light. He can hold it all day.
  • super customizable
  • JPEG’s have great details (he still could not use the RAW files)
  • lenses are incredible sharp also wide open

Power To The Images :-)

And now some images shared at the 7,000 member strong Fujifilm GFX facebook group

Fujifilm GFX Facebook Group Member GK Kutar‎ shared this image here – Full Size also at Disqus here. The image was taken with teh GF 63mmF2.8 @ 2.8. GK Kutar comments:

GFX is great camera. I really love it. I pre-order it. This is shot with 63 mm f2.8 lens at iso100. ClassicChrome. Fine jpeg. There is also super jpeg mode for more quality. Also this picture shot with pre production model.

In reply to this image, GFX Facebook member Craig J. thinks that “the dimensionality and tonality of this photo is fabulous.”

The image below instead has been shared by Anton, always at the GFX facebook group, here. It has been taken with the GF 32-64mmF4 @ ISO – 200 f8 25 seconds.

Chris shared and image taken by Omar Robles here, that you can see below.

The next image has been shared by Keith here. It shows the terrific potential the GFX has in terms of sharpness. But Keith himself struggles if all that focus on sharpness is really what photography is all about. He also shared one GFX image that is NOT sharp, but has a wonderful mood into it… making it his (and one of mine) favorite GFX images so far.

Fuji Guy Billy: “4K in X-Pro2 is Possible. I’m fighting with Japan for that” :: Fujifilm GFX, X100F, X-T20, FREE Tethered Fuji Software & More

Bigheadtaco Interview with Fuji Guy Billy

Bigheadtaco had a 1 hour talk with Fuji Guy Billy. If you have no time at the moment to watch it all, I made a summary for you guys (you’re welcome ;) ). For the full video click here… but you should really check out the whole interesting interview as soon as you find some time.

Fujifilm X-T20/X100F/4K

  • X-T2 has huge demand [NOTE: we noted this… it’s still backordered at a lot of stores :( ]
  • X100F sensor is more power-hungry, hence they needed to put in the bigger NP-W126s batteries
  • the WCL/TCL MK II has magnets that allows the camera to detect if the WCL or TCL is attached. The old converters also work, but you have to select in the menu if the WCL or TCL is attached
  • 4K: to get close to the F-Log profile for color grading, dial down highlight + shadow tone to -2 and sharpness down to -4, it’s pretty close to the flat F-Log profile (for max. dynamic range recovery capability you still need F-Log)
  • 4K on X-T20 you lose some resolution, because it has no crop (X-T2 has crop) but has a half line skip (min 14:55)

Firmware Update for X-Pro2?

  • The half line skipping when shooting 4K allows the X-T20 to shoot 4K without overheating. Take asks Billy if this could be implemented to the X-Pro2 via Firmware update. Billy answers: “I hope so, it’s something I’m pushing all the time. I don’t understand why the X-Pro2 has no 4K like X-T20, since there is a solution for that. I’m fighting for that in Japan.
  • Personal Note: Thanks Billy for your efforts to support us and make pressure on Fujifilm… we all send you a virtual hug :)

Fujifilm GFX

  • 2.5 years ago Fujifilm sat down with some key Medium Format photographers, and started developing the G-system from their input.
  • increased tonality + 14 stops of dynamic range
  • Hopefull down the road Capture One will support GFX RAW’s
  • GFX will hit the market at the end of February
  • Fujifilm will launch a free tethering Software (Fujifilm X-acquire) that you can use also with X-T2 & X-T1 at the end of Febraury. (min 29.03)
  • When they talked about the focal plane shutters, Fuji Guy Billy says that they know which sensor technology will come in future, and that “certain technology won’t be needed anymore“, and hence they decided to make future-proof non-leaf shutter lenses. Billy already talked more clearly about the global shutter in the interview with Luminous Landscape
  • Expect to see much more adapters. Fujifilm is very open to speak with third-party manufactures.
  • All 3 lenses are amazing sharp from center to corner, even the zoom lens.
  • Mid 2017 2 more lenses will come: 110mmF2 and 23mmF4. End of 2017 will see the 45mmF2.8
  • Fujifilm changed some of the curves for Astia and Provia, because of the new sensor and its great dynamic range.
  • Focus Bracketing (min. 29:45)

Mixed Stuff

  • Future APS-C lenses: they look at the demand. MarkII version of existing lenses, but also longer primes for sports [I’m sure they saw our poll results :) ]
  • Fuji Guy Billy says he’s aware the WiFi app needs improvements, and he seems confident that it will come. Not sure if you will have to pay for it.
  • Fujifilm is Nr.1 brand in Thailand, especially because of women liking its skin tones.

GFX ADAPTERS

Did I tell you already, that there is some awesome stuff going on at the Fujifilm GFX facebook group? ;)

Well, here is another interesting thing, spotted by GFX facebook member Issa.

He spotted images of several adapters for the Fujifilm GFX at a Chinese website, I can’t access to (only registered members can), but Issa was so nice to share them with us on the GFX facbeook page here.

The images show the following lenses adapted to the GFX (sample images are included)

I guess these are prototypes Fujifilm is currently developing (in addition to the Hasselblad H adapter that has already been launched along with the GFX). Here is the GFX facebook post that shows all the adapters .

Now that’s the good part of having a focal plane shutter… you can use any lens on the GFX and adds flexibility to the system :-)

Fujifilm GFX Roundup

USER IMPRESSIONS

A little Fujifilm GFX Roundup for you guys. As usual, most of it has been shared first at the 5,600+ member strong GFX Facebook Group, where also people, who have the opportunity to play a bit with the GFX, share their feedback and answer your questions in the comments.

Now let’s start this little roundup with a User Review by GFX Facebook Member Keith. He had the opportunity to test the GFX and shared his first impressions & image samples at clubsnap – via GFX facebook group. He says that:

  • Operation was quick, snappy and Auto focus akin to the X-T1 camera series
  • EVF will blow you away. Better than the one of the Leica SL
  • If one’s pockets can afford this, just do it.
  • Samples at clubsnap

SOME GFX FEATURES

I’d like to highlight a few more features of the Fujifilm GFX, that might have passed unnoticed to some, such as the “Color Chrome Effect” feature, for a more vivid and saturated color area and more details. Just like the “Grain Effect” we already know from X-TransIII cameras, you can set it to weak or strong, and combine it also with any film simulation.

So here are some features that you might or might not have heard of until now:

  • Color Chrome Effect provides an extra boost to saturated colors for a more punchy result
  • RGB Color histogram
  • 3D Electronic Level
  • Battery Age Indicator
  • Add Copyright information

Photoworld Asia 2017 GFX Presentation at whatzzup.PH Part 1 (just a basic specs introduction to the GFX) & Part 2 (at the beginning to the video, they talk about the features I’ve mentioned above). And of course you can find this information also in the official Fujifilm GFX cataglogue.

The waxy skin tones problem, for example, is no issue at all in RAW and significantly reduced with X-TransIII. Moreover, Iridient has proven to be superior with the demoisaicing than Darktable (used in this review). X-TransIII now also gives better results overall, due to the reduced distance between the repeating RGB patterns, reducing certain types of artifacts and improving the results with Adobe. Also, unlike stated in the review, Fujifilm NEVER said that X-Trans “eliminates” moiree, they say it “reduces” it.)

Zack Arias GFX or X-Pro2 Dilemma ** XF50 Vs 56 Comparison ** GFX Video Panning ** X100F / X-T20 & More

Fujifilm GFX

ZACK ARIAS DILEMMA

Zack Arias is caught in a dilemma… should he sell all Fuji X gear to get the Fujifilm GFX and X100F?

Currently I have two systems: The Phase One XF100 and my Fuji cameras. […] My only backup solution to my Phase is my Xpro2. It can get the job done but when you are hired to shoot medium format it would be nice to have a medium format as a backup if needed. There are times I’d like a smaller medium format kit and I think the Fujifilm GFX and the Fujinon GF32-64 will be a perfect solution for that.

I could sell ALL my Fuji gear and buy the GFX and the new X100F. I have thoughtfully considered that and it is still an option on the table.

Simplify Zack. Simplify. Zen. Flow like water. All that shit.

Full Phase kit. GFX for back up. X100F with wide and tele adapters? Rent other stuff as needed? That sounds good too. That Xpro2 though. I do love that camera so much. I’ve shot a lot of stuff with it. […] Xpro2. X100. Three lenses. Three flashes. One bag. Stuff that keeps me awake. Trying to find the signal in all of this noise. […] What do y’all think of all this bulls**t?

Fujinon XF50mmF2 WR

50 Vs. 56 Vs. 60

Some people asked for XF50mm Vs XF56mm comparisons in the comments. Well, I’ve found one at ivanjoshualoh here.

If you want the super-shallow DOF, then the 56 is the way to go. However, at F2, the 9 aperture blades of the XF50mmF2 (and 60) give overall nicer round balls
effects of the fairy lights. Used outdoor, though, with foliage in the background, the XF56mmF1.2 APD wins due to a creamier bokeh.

Compact, affordable, weather sealed, fast focus and a smooth bokeh make the XF50mmF2 WR probably the overall winner to me.

Dpreview Interviews Fujifilm Managers

Dpreview interviewed Fuji Guy Billy (Manager for the Technical Marketing and Product Specialist Group) and two more Fuji Managers, Makoto Oishi, manager of Fujifilm’s Sales and Marketing Group and Yuji Igarashi, general manager of Fujifilm’s Electronic Imaging Division.

They talk about the latest big Fuji announcements. If you are in a hurry, here some of the highlights:

  • GFX TARGET: Fashion, commercial and landscape photographers. And especially when it comes to landscape, it’s not just professional photographers, but also amateur photographers. The tonality and dynamic range also mean it’ll appeal to wedding and architecture photographers.
  • NEW GF LENSES (besides the 6 already announced): We have some ideas but haven’t decided yet. For example maybe a wide-angle zoom for landscape photographers or maybe something like a 200 or 250mm and so on. We want more feedback from users about what to make next.
  • AUTOFOCUS: Some of the first [GF] lenses have linear motors, whereas the 63mm has a different motor, more like the one used in the 23mm F2. The autofocus speed is already very good: we haven’t had any complaints. Instead we’ve had some users surprised by how fast the contrast-detection system is. From a technical point of view, maybe in the future we might incorporate phase-detection pixels. On the other hand, we’re already developed advanced CDAF algorithms.’ There’s no image quality cost to using phase detection.
  • GF LENS DESING CHALLANGES: As the sensor becomes bigger, that means chromatic aberration becomes bigger: it’s proportional to the size. In GFX we’ve minimized aberrations optically and the used digital compensation only to refine then final result, and it depends on lens
  • GFX 50R RANGERFINDER?: The GFX 50S is one style: the ‘S’ means ‘SLR-style.’ Another way to do it would be a rangefinder style camera. Maybe an ‘R’ could be a rangefinder: we’re always considering other options and possibilities.
  • X100F: The X100 series presents a great opportunity: the body size means it works as a second camera for anyone: not just Fujifilm users. If they fall in love with your system then maybe they’ll consider your cameras in future.’ […] X100 is about design. Even making it a couple of millimeters thicker to incorporate a touchscreen or tilt screen would make a big difference. It could change the design completely
  • X-E3: ‘XE is an important series for us,’ Oishi says: ‘There are so many XE1, 2 and 2S users in the world. We are always thinking about the next model, whether that’s XT, XE or X-Pro. Obviously we can’t confirm anything at this point but we are aware there are many requests for this type of camera [see these FujiRumors Polls]

So there is hope for the X-E3… and I like it to believe we, the Fujirumors community, were able to make enough pressure on Fujifilm in all these months… as we already did with other products in the past apparently.
