14 Fujifilm products won the IF design award 2017… and it’s a record for Fujifilm. Below you can read the list of 13 winners. 1 is still not officially announced, so it is missing in the list.
If I should place a bet, I’d say it’s the Fujifilm Instax Square. The square film has already been announced last year and has been displayed at photokina, as you could see in my photokina report. Fujifilm also already launched a special instax square page. But the camera itself is still a mystery.

The French site Le Monde De La Photo published its first report about the Fujifilm GFX.
It’s just an early first look, but for those interested in “independent” reviews, this is one of those.
They also published a nice graph (see image above), where they list the sharpness of the various GF lenses. Most of the time they perform “superlative” (dark blue) to “excellent” at any aperture, focal length, from the center to the corner. Only the zoom lens, the GF 32-64, is only “good” (green) at 46mm and F4 in the corner.
It seems Fujifilm is about to release on the market some really amazing lenses… again :-)
Here some excerpts (google translated:
LENS PERFORMANCE: The dive was calculated on the basis of standard style Jpeg, as Raw conversion software was not yet available. Overall the sharpness is always of high level, from very good to superlative according to the focal length and the openings. Only the corner area is sharply recessed at the focal length of 46 mm on the zoom, in all cases the dive is superlative over the field at medium apertures. The vignetting is never annoying and the chromatic aberration almost invisible, the only small defect noted is a cushion distortion (-0.15%) a little strong on the 120 mm macro that can be used to make reproductions of Works of art or documents, a little post-processing will be required.
AUTOFOCUS: the contrast detection autofocus is very precise but not always ultra reactive, and the continuous shooting at 3 frames second is not really targeted sport but sufficient to capture Changes of attitude of a model in portraiture.
ISO: On our “Nesie” basic test with a maximum sensitivity of 12,800 Iso, there is little degradation of the structure of the image, with the rise of a very light grain observable at 100% screen but quasi- Invisible on a glossy A1 paper print. The contours will nevertheless be a little less sharp than at 6 400 Iso, a grade that does not present more granulation than an average film format 100 Iso
Karen Hutton tested the GFX for a couple of days under tough conditions… and she shared some really amazing images.
“The dimensionality, the depth of field, that “certain something” that makes you feel like you can step into each image… all of that sang from each photo, straight out of camera! What kind of wizardry WAS this??

Markus Klinko & Koala
(clearly the new ‘state of the art’ for fashion)
FR-readers will know Markus Klinko quite well. He is the photographer behind the amazing David Bowie exhibition and I shared his work several times on FujiRumors and the exhibition is still on world tour. You can discover more about the David Bowie exhibition and Markus’ work at markusandkoala.
Markus is also currently testing the GFX, along with his photo partner Koala, and he send me the link to this video he made on assignment with the GFX. Markus is impressed by the GFX, as you can read below from the email he wrote me. And he also allowed me to share some samples you can download
I would say that for me, the GFX is clearly the new ‘state of the art’ camera system (for high-end advertising, fashion and celebrity portraiture type work). I would go as far as saying it is the best camera ever built, and I would expect it to become a ‘game changer’ in the industry. Hero Workshops: Perpetual Embrace. Back Beach, New Plymouth, New Zealand. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. One of the last sunsets of 2016 was hugging the horizon when I made the best of the inevitable. Burying my tripod in the sand against the ebb and flow of the incoming tide I soon found myself pretty drenched. At least the water up north is warmer than in Christchurch :). Shot using a 6-stop Nisi ND filter to show motion in the surf, and a 3-stop soft grad to bring down the top-right corner. My waterproof Sirui W2204 was a huge help as well. Zack Arias is caught in a dilemma… should he sell all Fuji X gear to get the Fujifilm GFX and X100F?
“Currently I have two systems: The Phase One XF100 and my Fuji cameras. […] My only backup solution to my Phase is my Xpro2. It can get the job done but when you are hired to shoot medium format it would be nice to have a medium format as a backup if needed. There are times I’d like a smaller medium format kit and I think the Fujifilm GFX and the Fujinon GF32-64 will be a perfect solution for that.
I could sell ALL my Fuji gear and buy the GFX and the new X100F. I have thoughtfully considered that and it is still an option on the table.

Full Phase kit. GFX for back up. X100F with wide and tele adapters? Rent other stuff as needed? That sounds good too. That Xpro2 though. I do love that camera so much. Fujinon XF50mmF2 WR
50 Vs. 56 Vs. 60
Some people asked for XF50mm Vs XF56mm comparisons in the comments. Well, I’ve found one at ivanjoshualoh here.
If you want the super-shallow DOF, then the 56 is the way to go. However, at F2, the 9 aperture blades of the XF50mmF2 (and 60) give overall nicer round balls
effects of the fairy lights. Used outdoor, though, with foliage in the background, the XF56mmF1.2 APD wins due to a creamier bokeh.
Compact, affordable, weather sealed, fast focus and a smooth bokeh make the XF50mmF2 WR probably the overall winner to me.

It’s done… another Fuji Year is over. I hope I could give you some fun moments in 2016, even though you had to go through a total of 860 articles written in my crappy English ;) .
I’ve tried to give my best, also in my personal email exchange with you (gmail says that I’m now reaching 4,700 emails written in 2016… not counting the easily 1,000+ private messages on Facebook and Twitter).
You can be sure that I’ll put all my passion/fun/excitement (and a lot of time) into this blog also in 2017, in order to make your time here on FujiRumors the most informative & exciting as possible.

Top & Flop Blogger Moments
TOP Blogger Moment 2016:
Going to Photokina was, by very far, the highlight of my year. I was undercover, hence 100% anonymous. And I liked it this way. I could watch all the Fujifilm X-photographers, like Kevin Mullins, making their speeches and stage performance, I salivated on the window that protected the GFX, tested out some lenses that I never had the pleasure to play with (like the XF100-400), and I was able to do all this without Fujifilm kicking me out of the booth… wonderful :). And… I have never seen so many X-shooters on one spot, all together, sharing my same passion, with the Fuji X photowalk at the end of the day being the final touch on the top of a wonderful day. I could have stayed there the whole week, but sadly, I had to go back teaching (with some evident difficulties, though ;)).
FLOP Blogger Moment 2016:
When a trusted source informed me the Fujifilm X-T2 will come in early July (and not in June like originally planed), and I had to cancel my trip to Iceland in order to be able to cover properly the announcement as well as the busy time after the announcement. S*it happens. Next time, Iceland :)
