The Evolution of Fujifilm Colors from X-Pro1 to Fujifilm X-T3 and Why DPReview RAW Lab Tests Don’t Show Fujifilm Colors

I am one of the few on this wonderful globe, to have had the privileged to own and shoot with all X-Trans cameras (except the X-Trans 4, until now).

And when in these days I read that the colors on X-Trans 4 might be slightly different from those on X-Trans 3, this does not surprise me at all.

In fact, Fujifilm has always slighlty fine-tuned and changed colors with every Fujifilm X-Trans/processor generation. And they even say it openly here, that they change colors trying to reach “the ideal vision” or “the ideal color reproduction” by taking advantage of new technologies (new sensors/processor).

It’s all about improving Fujifilm colors/film simulations, mostly based on customer feedback.

For example, when people complained that red colors with X-TransII in Velvia are too strong and lose texture too quickly, Fujifilm desaturated the reds a bit with X-Trans III.

So, there is nothing like “THE Fujifilm colors“.

Fujifilm colors change with every new sensor and processor generation. Then it’s up to you to see if they changed for the better or for the worst.

The Problem With DPReview Lab Test

The problem with DPReview lab test is that their Fujifilm X-Trans RAW samples we pixel peeped yesterday don’t show you the Fujifilm colors.

Why?

Because RAW file colors depend on the RAW converter you use (and in case of the X-T3 it’s even just a beta support). And as far as I know, RAWs don’t really have “colors”, but “luminance”. Colors are created during the demosaicing (correct me if I am wrong).

To get the closest results to “real” Fujifilm colors in Lightroom, you would have to apply to the RAW file one of the Fujifilm film simulations presets in Lightroom (Astia for example is great if you want the best skin tones), and then continue to edit your image from there… if there is any need for editing at all, given how amazing Fujifilm film simulations are ;).

Of course, the film simulation profiles in Adobe Lightroom do not match 100% the “in camera” film simulations (or “in X RAW STUDIO”), but they are Adobe’s attempt to get as close as possible to Fujifilm colors, which is already much better than their standard stuff ;) .

So when yesterday some of you compared the RAW file colors, just know that these are not really the “Fuji colors”.

As soon as you get the Fujifilm X-T3, make sure to update it to firmware version 1.01, which was released a few minutes ago and fixes lockups and more.

Fujifilm X-T3 Firmware 1.01 Lock-up Fix Released

Fujifilm just released Fujifilm X-T3 firmware 1.01, which fixes the lockup issue we reported about. Download here.

The firmware update Ver.1.01 from Ver.1.00 incorporates the following issues:

  1. Compensation of distortion is optimized in CH shooting with electronic shutter.
  2. The phenomenon is fixed that the mechanical LOCK of some SD cards is not recognized.
  3. Fix of other slight defects

Now I hope stores will perform the firmware updates before they start shipping, otherwise people, who don’t know about the update, will start complaining about bugs that have been solved with this firmware.

DPReview adds Fujifilm X-T3 to their Studio Lab Test Comparison

DPReview just added the Fujifilm X-T3 to their studio lab test images. Happy pixel peeping here.

I will more in-depth pixel peeping later on, but I’d say that overall details look better on X-T3 at very high ISO. Noise, though, looks better on the X-T2. However, results vary a lot depending on which part of the image you analyze.

Also, I have not seen any official Fujifilm X-T3 support by Adobe yet. Maybe DPReivew got early access to a not yet 100% final version? UPDATE: Tony Northrup told us in the comments, that the latest LR 8.0 beta supports the X-T3.

I am curious to see what you guys think, and I am sure the comment section will be very vivid :).

ThePixedCatcher wonders: is there a visible difference between the Fujifilm X-T3 and X-T2 in terms of sharpness and dynamic range? He imported the JPEG images into Capture One and says (using XF23mmF1.4):

  • DR100 @ ISO200: no difference in sharpness
  • DR400 @ ISO800: noise similar. Details a little bit better on X-T3, but not huge difference
  • ISO200 and ISO800: no noticable difference in dynamic range
  • Conclusion: Video features and Autofocus are main advantages with X-T3 over X-T2
  • at very high ISO the X-T2 has more noise than X-T3, but the difference is not that much

The French youtube channel Les Guide Fujifilm by Damien Bernal compared the X-T2 and X-T3 during a Fuji event at very high ISO (12,800). The comparison is not really fair, since the X-T2 was shot at 1/1000s whereas the X-T3 at 1/1100s, but you can see the result minute 12:01 here. The difference is substantial, but again, take the test with a grain of salt.

Also williamchua is testing the Fujifilm X-T3. Apart from wonderful images he shared in his blog post here, he says that “high ISO noise control is better than the X-T2“.

CONCLUSIONS: Of course no conclusion can be taken, since only the RAW files will tell the truth. But if I should take one based on JPEG comparisons shared so far, I’d say there is no difference at lower ISO, but at very high ISO the X-T3 is better than the X-T2. But only RAW will tell the truth.

Keep in mind that these are handmade sketches, so the proportions could be minimally off.

However, this is a rumor site, and we are here to have fun, so I matched the sketched Fujifilm GFX 50R mount with the one of the Fujifilm GFX 50S. I  consider this comparison 95%+ accurate.

I also compared the size of the Fujifilm GFX 50R with the one of the brand new Fujifilm X-T3, the Fujifilm X-E3 and the Hasselblad X1D.

TheCameraStoreTV published their full Fujifilm X-T3 review. No IBIS, could have battery life, but for the rest it’s a solid camera. Check out the video down below or directly on youtube here.

And now to the lock-ups.

Dylan Goldby has tons of great things to say about the Fujifilm X-T3. Especially the autofocus is excellent. He was convinced and pre-ordered one right away.

However, he experienced lock-ups. Check out the video above or on youtube here. In his follow up video here, he says Fuji is releasing a fix via firmware update.

We already reported, that ZedProMedia also experienced lock-ups, but only when his X-T3 was attached to the battery grip. Using the X-T3 body only, ZedProMedia said the camera was “rocksolid“. In Dylan’s case it happened with body only.

BigheadTaco also said he didn’t experience any lock-ups.

Keep in mind that most you see is pre-production stuff, and in part some bugs are to expect while developing the final firmware. But let’s hope that once the Fujifilm X-T3 hits the market, the X-T3 will be bug free… and if not, at least Fujifilm has a great firmware update history ;),
