DPReview Fujifilm X-T3 Review: “Arguably the Best Stills/Video Camera on the Market Right Now” – GOLD AWARD

Fujifilm X-T3 Review

DRPeview just published their full Fujifilm X-T3 review, and it snaps the gold award with an overall score of 88% (the Sony A7III has an overall score of 89%).

It easily beats the Sony A6500, autofocus is improved a lot, although eye AF on Sony is still better. The Nikon D500 would still be their favorite choice for sports photography, but overall the Fujifilm X-T3 is the better choice.

Compared to the Sony A7III they say:

“Putting up more fierce competition is the Sony a7 III which, for a few hundred dollars more, offers the step up in image quality that full-frame can bring, as well as in-body image stabilization and a larger grip. The X-T3 is arguably nicer to shoot and actually out-performs the 8-bit video of the Sony but it can’t compete with its image quality or fully match the Sony’s AF performance. However, the Fujifilm is less expensive and smaller, especially if you factor in the lenses you might want, so it depends on your priorities.”

  • Bluetooth makes connecting to a phone easier
  • Viewfinder nicely detailed
  • Dual-hinged screen is highly versatile
  • USB charging is convenient
  • Slightly higher noise levels at very high ISOs than its predecessor
  • Some lenses can’t take full advantage of X-T3’s AF speeds
  • Very quick to drop to a slower, darker preview mode (presumably to save battery)
  • A tripod or gimbal is needed to get the best of the camera’s video
  • No way to quickly toggle Face Detection
  • No non-face subject tracking in video

Mirrorless Sports Shootout

Which one is the best mirrorless camera for sports between the Fujifilm X-T3, Canon EOS R, Nikon Z7, Sony A7 III, Sony A7R III and Sony A9?

Tony Northrup tries to answer this in his latest review, and here is what he concludes, from the best to the worst.

1) Sony A9 – WINNER

  • 20 fps and with some lenses (such as the Sony GM 400mm F2.8) it can achieve 20 sharp images
  • no blackout
  • it’s very expenisve, so Tony would push people to Fujifilm X-T3, because it is so much cheaper and a great all around camera

2) Fujifilm X-T3 (with XF50-140) – 2nd PLACE

  • Tony’s favorite camera to use overall
  • 30 fps with no EVF blackout, but tacking tends to slow down to about 12 fps and only an average of 8.5 are in focus
  • tacking side to side is only OK, like the Sony
  • better than Sony A7III and A7rIII
  • APS-C, less DOF and more noise. He says Fujifilm can fix both this by releasing fast lenses (such as the XF200mmF2, which is full frame equivalent 300/2.8 [I add also the XF33mmF1.0]
  • amazing video camera

3) Sony A7R III

  • Very close to A7III
  • more megapixel allow you to crop more
  • workable subject tracking, but not very reliable

4) Sony A7 III

  • dual SD-card slot, but one is only USH-I, which does makes buffer slow
  • whole camera locks up while writing to buffer
  • 5.2 sharp images out of 8
  • better selection of native glass than Canon EOS R and Nikon Z7
  • 8fps on paper, but only 5 in focus on average
  • Sony is not well known for good weather sealing

5) Nikon Z7

  • effective 4 fps, but only 60% in focus, hence about same performance to Canon EOS R
  • impracticable user interface
  • stick with your D500 or D850, where AF works better
  • single SD-card slot

6) Canon EOS R

  • the worst
  • only 2.5 shots in focus
  • slow but accurate
  • no jostick
  • single card slot
  • you can adapt lots of long Canon glass, but focus is not as fast as when used on DSLR

Fujifilm X-T3 is a Phenomenal Video Camera Say DPReview and Max Yuryev

DPReview tested the Fujifilm X-T3 capabilities and concludes that the X-T3 “lives ip to its impressive specifications“. You can check out their video related review here. Their key points:

  • stunning video that lives up to X-T3 impressive specifications
  • Zebras and magnification during shooting make it easier to capture footage
  • Video works well enough to be usable for all but the most critical work
  • Lack of in-body stabilization makes it a tripod or gimbal camera
  • Video AF: generally holding focus steady unless it finds itself with nothing it can focus on. With a little tuning we generally found we could get the result we wanted for a range of different shooting situations
  • The Movie Silent Control mode, while fiddly to use, makes the X-T3 one of the most pleasant cameras for shooting both stills and video on
  • The X-T3’s 4K appears a little more detailed than the 4K output of the Sony A7 III. 1080p output isn’t as impressive, though it’s more detailed than the A7 III’s footage. This advantage is maintained into the 120 fps mode

Max Yuryev

Max Yuryev says the Fujifilm X-T3 a phenomenal camera for video shooters. Some key points of the video we share below (or see directly on youtube here):

  • it’s handsome
  • kit lens feels so solid, very good performer
  • tally light when filming, so you know when it’s recording
  • eye detection during video is very impressive feature
  • so many video options
  • H265 codec needs lots of CPU power when editing on computer
  • a big step above X-T2 in almost every way
  • battery life not the best
  • no IBIS

Fringer EF-FX AF Adapter Eye Tracking tested on Fujifilm X-T3 with Canon 600mm F4 and Sigma 18-35mm F1.8

Fringer just upload a video on his youtube channel (video above), showing the Face/Eye detection tracking using the Fujifilm X-T3 with Canon EF600/4L II adapted via Fringer EF-FX AF Autofocus smart adapter with firwmare ver. 2.50.

As you can see, the eye/face AF works really very well in his video demo. He writes:

“To my surprise it works incredibly well on X-T3 when doing AF-C tracking. I set X-T3 to AF-C mode, CH (11 fps) and Face/Eye detection on. The focusing object is a person riding a electric motorcycle moving fast towards the camera.

30 pictures were taken in less than 3 seconds. The focus areas were cropped at 100% scale and combined to the following picture“

“I also tested video mode Face/Eye tracking. Thanks to the great improvements of PDAF performance and coverage of X-Trans IV CMOS, both still and video mode works very well.

The new firmware ver 2.50 for Fringer EF-FX AF smart adapters will be out soon, and it will add support for Canon EF600/4L II.

Fujifilm X-T3 Uses 26 Megapixel BSI Sony Sensor as Listed at Sony

Recently a Fujifilm manager said here, that the sensor inside the Fujifilm X-T3 is not a Samsung sensor.

And yet, some people were still sceptical, especially considering that Sony does not offer any 26 megapixel BSI sensor.

Well, this argument seems to be gone now, since, as spotted by mirrorlessrumors, Sony updated its sensor page and we can now find the IMX571 26 megapixel BSI sensor listed on their website here.

Comparing it to the sensor of the upcoming Fujifilm GFX 100 (also listed at Sony) we can see both, the APS-C and MF sensor, have the same pixel size (3.76).

Keep in mind that Fujifilm officially said the GFX 100 will have 102 MP. This indicates that the GFX 100 has the same X-T3 sensor technology (except for X-Trans CFA), just about 4 times bigger.

We have already documented in this article, that sensor stitching happens already with the Fujifilm GFX 50S.

If the Fujifilm X-T3 had IBIS, would You Prefer it over the Fujifilm X-H2?

Recently we launched an interesting poll (almost 7,000 votes), where we could see that most FR-readers are waiting for the Fujifilm X-H2 and hence did not buy the Fujifilm X-T3.

But I wonder, is it only because the Fuji X-H2 will have IBIS, or do you simply overall prefer the ergonomics of the Fujifilm X-H2 over the Fuji X-T3?

Well, let’s try to find it out with todays’ survey.

So, imagine the Fujifilm X-T3 would have IBIS, and hence be equal to the Fujifilm X-H2 in terms of specs, and the only difference between the X-T3 and X-H2 would be the ergonomics, which one would you buy?

As a FR-reader told me, the same questions has been shared at dpreview here, but the poll there did get only 59 votes.
