“The X system goes from strength to strength”: 56mm Highly Recommended at cameralabs!

– It might be the best Fujinon lens ever produced: the XF 56mm f/1.2! Camerlabs just published their full review here:

Bottom line? The Fujifilm 56mm f1.2 is another great quality lens for the X-series. It’s a confidently-built, optically superb, well-priced for a lens of its class and exploits the latest body technologies to deliver crisp details into the corners and effective tracking of moving subjects. Bokeh obsessives may prefer the rendering of some higher-end options, but there’s few who wouldn’t look at the images from the 56mm on a modern X-series body and be anything other than delighted.

If you’re an X-series owner who needs a short, bright telephoto with AF, it may be your only choice, but thankfully it’s also a great one. What with the fabulous X-T1 and new 10-24mm ultra wide zoom, the X system goes from strength to strength.”

– Getting Married with the Fuji X-T1 & XF 56mm F1.2 at olafblog: “After reviewing our material, we both agreed that this is the best, sharpest X-series lens from Fuji ever, and one of the best we have ever shot with. But see for yourself.

– X-T1 face detection AF at f/1.2 with the 56mm Lens at f-sunny: “Even with this set-up, I was unsure as to how well the FD AF would pick out the model’s eyes as the key point of focus – DOF at f/1.2 is razor thin, so this was a significant challenge. […] No more worrying about AF box location over the eyes, I could (in theory) just line up the perfect comp, and shoot – the camera would do the rest. […] The pictures tell the story – I am immensely impressed with the Face Detection AF on the X-T1.”

XF-lens deals

I’ve received the udpated rebate document of Fujifilm. It confirms that the rebates will go till April 5th. It’s a confidential file, so it’s just between you and me, don’t tell around ;-).

And EU-readers shouldn’t be angry about the fact that the rebates apply only to the US. In fact you can order the lenses in the US, pay taxes and shipping, and still save hundreds of Euro. You can get the 27mm for about €230 in Germany, Italy, France… and all the the other EU-countries that very rarely (or never) see a rebate on X-gear.

EU-ORDERS: FR-reader Oscar (ordered at BHphoto): “Just to confirm you that this EU-order thing works even if one order from Italy. I ordered the XF27mm. Paid 199$ + 43$ (for delivery) to B&H, which is the equivalent of 175€. Waited one week because of the back-order but as soon as the lens was available it took 2 days to arrive at my doorstep. And because I’ve chosen to pay all duties and taxes on delivery, I paid 54€ to the mailman (UPS), for a grand total of 229€. Not bad for a lens that’s available at 400/450€. Thanks a lot to FR ;)!

However, I wonder if all these rebates we have seen over the last year are really good for Fujifilm and its customers. There are PROS and CONS such as:

PROS: new customers can switch cheap to the X and Fujifilm gains market shares CONS: resale price of used gear ([shoplink 12881 ebay]used X-E1 almost 60% cheaper on ebay now[/shoplink] compared to a new one 1½ years ago, when it hit the market) / people won’t buy X-gear at normal price and wait for the next price drop… and Fuji doesn’t make profit selling discounted X-gear.

And now feel free to extend the PROS and CONS list in the comments.

cheers

XF 56mm review at photographyblog: “Must have lens for Fuji X-mount users”

 photo 56mm_zps60864065.jpg

Fuji XF 56mm: [shopcountry 21554]

– 5 out of 5 stars for the XF 56mm. Read the full review of photographyblog here:

“Priced at £899.99 / $999.99, the Fujifilm XF 56mm F1.2 R is something of a considered purchase, but we found it to be a very adaptable lens that can be used for a lot more things than just portraiture, helping to justify the cost. We’d definitely recommend the new Fujifilm XF 56mm F1.2 R as a must-have lens for all Fujifilm X-mount users.”

[UPDATE] FR-reader Tobias sent me his comments about the photographyblog review via email. He said that “Hello Patrick, the photographyblog test shows some edge softness at wide apertures. But his test is flawed. I tried it: the edge softness occurs only at minimum focusing distance! Just 20cm-40cm further away from the subject, the sharpness is fantastic across the frame, right up to the edge.”

– A Bikini Model and the Fuji XF56mmF1.2 R Lens at joshmcleodphotography here: “It is probably one of the most impressive lenses I have shot with… EVER! Even wide-open the lens performed exceptionally well. Shooting directly into bright sunlight also posed no problem for this little gem… lens flare was non existent, the autofocus was both fast and accurate and the images it produced are far far better than I could have hoped for, even the JPG’s (Lightroom still has no support of the X-T1 RAW files). In fact I am so impressed with its wide-open performance I am about to pull the trigger on a variable ND filter so I can shoot at F1.2 all the time.”

– first impressions at admiringlight here: “At first blush, Fuji has created a heck of a lens with the XF 56mm f/1.2.”

– “On the XE2 it certainly looks a beast. The combo may lesson one handed shooting overall, but a two handed grasp feels just right. Focus is assured and snappy and the lens is buttery smooth (and this would be butter churned by dusky maidens with long limbs and faultless skin smooth). And the bokeh, well it’s a Fuji lens with a max aperture of F/1.2, it’s fujilicious.” Read more at draigphotography here.

“The future lies in mirrorless technology” + 2013 bad year for photography industry

 photo xt1_zpsb24402ee.jpg

X-T1 in stock check: [shopcountry 21553]

_ _ _

FR-reader vortsg sent me the following article of Michael Reichmann over at luminous landscape here. Since I like unpopular statements, I’ll start by quoting the following one:

It’s clear to everyone in the industry that the future lies in mirrorless technology.”

And here is what Michael Reichmann from luminous landscape says, among the others, about Fujifilm:

“Fuji seems to have been “thinking-out-loud” for the past few years, experimenting with novel designs and trying new technologies. Some are misses, and some are hits, but they certainly appear to have the cojones to try something new.

[…] Fuji, always a great lens maker, are also bringing out new X mount lenses at a fairly rapid clip, and offering the high-end market some interesting primes as well as bread-and-butter zooms. When combined with their innovative cameras this makes for a compelling sell, at least compared with some others.

One area where Fuji shows that they “get it” better than possibly any other camera maker in Asia, is with regard to firmware updates. Not only do they release regular updates for current models, to fix bugs and add features, but they even do it for older discontinued models. Some camera makers don’t even bother with bug fixes, and if they do, it is often months after these are well known before they become available. Nicely done Fujifilm!”

But Michael has comments to make on many other brands out there. The [shoplink 21555]Nikon DF[/shoplink] is called “Frankenstein“, the Hasselblad “a joke“, he talks about Sony’s “lens mount fiasco“… and what about Olympus, Panasonic, Sigma, Canon, Pentax and more? Read it here at luminous landscape.

And as always, feel free to make your own considerations in the comments. Is mirrorless really the future?

I don’t know what the future is, but the present isn’t looking good at all. Here are the figures of the CIPA (the Camera & Imaging Products Association) summarized in a nice infographic by lensvid here. Smartphones, the global crisis and the fact that Americans and Europeans still don’t like mirrorless cameras make of 2013 “the worst year for the photography industry in a long long time (maybe even decades).” (via Canonwatch)

BHphoto: New Benefits for International Customers: PayPal now open to all countries!

Here is how it goes according to the German FR-reader Oleg, who bought the 27mm for €223: “The price is 199$, the delivery is 44$. Once you choose Germany as country of delivery, on check-out on B&H to deal with duties, you you pick one of two. 1. You can check “pay duties now” and that would be 100$ and you need not go to customs office (Zollamt), since you have basically paid all in full (btw, ebay sellers offer such option as well). So, it will make 343$, or 250 Euro. You pay 343 to B&H. And hopefully nothing else. 2. You can check “pay on delivery” and all you pay is 243$, or 178 Euro to B&H. Since I am not sure about the first option (more precisely, that I will not have to pay even more custom duties) and custom office is close to Cologne, I chose the second option “pay on delivery.”

Ok dear Fujifilm, we can live with it. We can wait until 2015 for the X-PRO2. We will wait because you promised us a “major breakthrough“. I still don’t know what this breakthrough will be, but I’m investigating.

As we know, there are 2 Fuji patents for new sensors: one is the organic sensor and the other is the one with the enlarged green pixels. Both could be an option for the X-PRO2… and of course, a full frame sensor.

So now it’s your turn, dear FR-readers. Which sensor you’d like to see in the X-PRO2. Feel free to vote the poll (and also to add new suggestions in the comments).

And in the meantime, Fuji, just give us XPRO1S with the X-TRANS version of Sony’s [shoplink 22210]Sony’s A6000[/shoplink] APS-C sensor, where phase-detect points cover 92% of the frame.

There is a time for the rumors, a time for the reviews, a time for the X-T1 delivery check… and then there is a time to (finally) go out and take photographs. That’s what I’ll do now on this sunny and mild Sunday.

And to keep the spirit of today’s X-shooter zone, I’ll take black&white shots only. That’s my “limitation of the day”.

So here are some more X-shots from X-shooters all around the world. There are many ways to share your passion and shots with FR. Via email (fujirumor@gmail.com), google+twitter and keep up sharing also on the FR-facebook wall.

Stephan Geyer

Hi There!

I’ve been an avid follower of your site ever since the X100 came out (and I subsequently started drooling at it). Since then, I’ve made the move from a Canon full frame system and a few L lenses (and a lot of RAW reliance) to the X-Pro1 and 35/1.4, 18/2.0 lenses.

Ever since the release of the Leica Monochrom as well, I have been thinking about the effect that a fully monochrome camera could have on my photography, the comfort level I would have to overcome and the change it would bring to my prespective of the scene I’m photographing.

Before you wonder; no, I have not bought a Leica Monochrom as I am still not made of money.

The other realisation I came to recently was that the JPEGs coming out of my X-Pro1 were by far cleaner, sharper and had better noise performance than anything I could ever achieve out of the X-Pro1 RAW files and Lightroom. So the conclusion? I’ve decided to shoot my X-Pro1 one in JPEG only, BW film emulation only and do some very light retouching in Lightroom (yes, the Dynamic Range in these JPEGs is that good).

In my latest blog-post, you can find my the outcome of my first trip using nothing but in-camera JPEG and in BW; in Istanbul, Turkey.

Hope you enjoy it and keep up the great work!

Michiel Kostermans

Hi Patrick,

Since I saw the X-E1 I knew this is the one. I waited 3/4 years to let it drop in price. For me it is the perfect combination of quality and size. I always take my camera with me. I started do do a self study project. I found a beatiful book The Visual Toolbox from David duChemin. It’s about learning visual tools to add to your toolbox. I learn a tool every week. So i force myself to make 3 good prictures and publish hem on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/108772254@N05/
I hop from one chapter to another, just what i like, and practice the visual tool for a week. Inspiring and fun!!

Af course i also studied Rico Pfirstingers book as a technical basis. But this book from David is different from anything i read before, Stop looking for gear (although difficult wiht the beatiful line up of lenses from Fuji) and study, study, study. Have fun.

Maybe there are more people who can get inspired by the self study idea or would like to join a Flickr group.

Greetings

Bruno Trematore

Hi Patrick,

My story is the following: I was enthusiast about my first Nikon DSLR back in 2007, until during my first long trip with it I started experiencing pain at my shoulder. During that trip I bought a second hand F3 and switched back to film. I kept shooting film on Nikon F3 and Leica M6 until 2012, when I tried an X100. The camera is quirky sometimes, but its small size and excellent image quality more than compensate for the occasional lost shot. I have also learned that it is better to learn to live with the shortcomings of a certain camera and  overcome then, rather than changing every year. My travel bag restrictions are hard sometimes, but the X100 fits everywhere, making it an ideal companion for travel as well as everyday life.

I have spent quite some amount of time in ordering and editing the photos, seeing how they work next to each other, escaping the paradigma of the “best shot”. The blurb books make the whole projects shine in a completely different way in comparison to the website.

XF 56mm shipping in Japan! (+ £250 voucher for the WR 18-135 in UK?)

Yesterday FR-reader Roger told us that a Japanese store just shipped his XF56mm… and today “The Green Balbo” (website: grittymonkey) shared an image on the FR-twitter account with the following image :-).

[UDPATE: Damien (grittymonkey) continues to diligentely share his findings on youtube: for the UHS-II vs UHS-I video click here, for the manual focus video here.]

Another FR-reader (moslake) shared in the comments to a previous post his Flickr (here) with his initial impression of Fujinon XF56 F1.2. “I’m ecstatic to find out that XF 56 delivers very beautiful bokeh. It wins hands down!” [admin: On his Flickr he compared it with the [shoplink 22141]Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II[/shoplink]. But it would have been better done with an 1.8 lens on a FF, as the Fujinon 1.2 is a 1.8 equivalent. To see more images of the beautiful bokeh of the 56mm, I recommend you to check out Rico’s first look here.]

RUMOR: An anonymous source, who said to work for a UK store, told me that: “the X-T1 body (not the kit) had a sticker for an offer where if the person registers the camera they can receive a £250 discount voucher for the XF18-135mm weather resistant lens when it comes out. Have you seen anyone else, uk or otherwise, have this same offer as it seems like no one has mentioned this yet.” The rumor is now confirmed by drphotorumor and another FR-reader too.
