Fujinon XC 15-45 “Muffin Zoom” Review: “Detail is Reproduced Very Well for such a Compact and Affordable Lens”

Fujinon XC15-45mmF3.5-5.6 OIS PZ Shipping Starts Tomorrow

Fujinon XC 15-45mm

The official “shipping embargo” ends tomorrow, and finally BHphoto, AmazonUS and Adorama will start delivering Fuji’s smallest zoom lens, the XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 PZ OIS.

The XC15-45 is an interesting option for those of us, who’d like to travel as light as possible, but do want to keep the flexibility a zoom lens offers.

The Fujinon internal competitor of the XC15-45 is the XF 18-55 (the XC16-50 will probably be discontinued).

Having 3mm more at the wide end can make the difference especially for landscape photography. I personally applaud Fuji’s decision to go wider (15mm) and sacrifice a bit of reach at the long end.

True, the XC15-45 won’t be able to keep up optically with the XF18-55 and it is also a slower lens, but these are inevitable tradeoffs for a lens, the XC15-45, that is about half the size of the XF18-55.

It remains to see how well it performs optically, and we now have the first review at photographyblog. Their conclusions:

What we do know about Fujifilm’s lenses, even the budget-friendly ones, is that we can expect very good image quality. The Fujinon XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens is no exception. Paired with the Fujifilm X-A5, we have been able to make images with wonderful clarity.

Fine and complex detail is handled and reproduced very well for such a compact and affordable lens. Usually kit lenses are below par, not so here.

All in all, the handling of the lens is average. Really, it’s to be expected of a lens at this level and price point. With an unmarked electronic zoom, it’s more friendly to filmmakers than photographers.

What is clearly the champion feature is its diminutive size and weight, and for that reason alone we expect the lens to be very popular.

Yet, what may get overlooked is how much wider this lens is than many other kit lenses. If you are into landscape photography, then the lens’ 23mm wide setting will be very accommodating.

Bottom line; the Fujinon XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ could handle better, but it is compact, it is light, it has a wider angle of view than most kit lenses and creates very sharp images indeed.

So overall a nice little lens, that performs better than comparable kit lenses of other manufacturers.

Intro

In the last months here on FujiRumors I did work harder than ever before, slept 3 or 4 hours max. for entire weeks, had no spare time, canceled my flight to Cambodia to meet the kids at KNGO, the project we support here on FujiRumors because of the X-H1 announcement, drunk a lot of coffee, and dedicated heart and soul to give you guys the best Fujifilm X-H1 coverage I can.

At the same time, I replied to something like 30 to 50 emails and personal messages a day, and many of them are from fellow X shooters, who would like to be featured on FujiRumors.

I apologize if this time it took longer to feature you, but the Fujifilm X-H1 buzz just made it hard to share mixed zones.

So today’s mixed zone is massive, and yet it is just about a fraction of the content people asked me to share. I will share the rest in future mixed zone episodes, catalogued in a way that it makes sense. And since we had so much to talk about the Fujifilm X-H1 in these months, I will keep this one 100% X-H1 free :)

Also, there are a few guest posts in the pipeline, which I will also share, and I apologize if it all takes so long.

With that said, below is some content you might want to check out.

Fujinon XC 15-45 Power Zoom Size Compared to XC 16-50 and XF18mmF2

XC 16-50 Vs. XC 15-45 Vs. XF18
XC 16-50 Vs. XC 15-45 Vs. XF18

Fujinon XC 15-45

Hey all,

what we have for you today is the close estimated size (not 100%, but very close) of the Fujinon XC15-45mm F3.5-5.6 Power Zoom, Fujifilm’s most compact zoom lens that will be announced on January 31, along with the Fujifilm X-A5.

The size of 16-50 and 18 on X-A3 are made using camerasize.com. FujiRumors just added an empty X-A3 body, and added a line with the size of the XC15-45.

As you can see, the XC 15-45 will be much closer in size to the pancake XF18mmF2 than to the Fujinon XC16-50. I’d say it will have roughly the size of the Fujinon XF35mmF2 WR. Only the XF18mmF2 and the XF27mmF2.8 will be smaller in the Fujinon XF and XC world.

The Fujinon XC15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 will be bigger than Sony’s Power Zoom solution, the Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6, but I guess that Fujifilm tried to find the sweet spot between compact size and image quality.

Given the fact that we now have a close estimate of the final XC15-45 size, I will launch again the poll, if you are interested to buy it or not.

all the best,

COMING SOON: New Fujinon XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS Pancake Power Zoom with Ø52 Filter Thread

New Fujinon XC15-45 Pancake Zoom

Hey guys,

Let’s start this week with a nice rumor, giving you all the core specs of Fujifilm’s rumored XC 15-45 lens… and here they are:

  • XC 15-45mm
  • Pancake Zoom
  • F 3.5 – 5.6
  • OIS (optical image stabilization)
  • Power Zoom
  • Filter Thread Ø52
  • Coming soon ;)

OIS: Yes, XC are slower that XF lenses, but also the little XC15-45 will have OIS, and given Fujifilm’s class leading optical image stabilization expertise, we can expect it to work fantastic also on this new pancake zoom, making the XC15-45 very usable also at slower shutter speeds.

FILTER THREAD: The filter thread –  Ø52 – is the same of the XF18mm and XF35mmF1.4.

POWER ZOOM: No manual/mechanical zoom on this lens. There will be a power zoom, meaning your will control electronically the zoom (remains to see if via button or ring, I don’t know this at this moment). We have to see how well this works in real life and how responsive and precise it is.

XC15-45 Vs. XC 16-50: The XC15-45 will have the same F stop and almost the same zoom range of the XC16-50mmF3.5-5.6, but will be significantly smaller. I can see XC16-50 sales drop considerably, after the announcement of the XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6.

XC Lenses, any Good?

Fujinon XC lenses are optically wonderful lenses.

The only thing that differentiates them from XF lenses, is that XC lenses are slower and made more out of plastic, in order to contain production costs.

But in terms of image quality, theses XC lenses are terrific value for the money and fully honour their “Fujinon” family name :) .

Perfect Travel Companion for X-E3, X-A5, X-T100 & Co

If you remember, we had a discussion here on FujiRumors back in November 2017 about pancake lenses.

In fact, given the compact size of the X-E3, but also other Fujifilm cameras like the upcoming Fujifilm X-A5 and the Fujifilm X-T100, some of you thought that it might be time to expand Fuji’s pancake lens line-up, which currently consists only in the XF27mm and XF18mm.

Also back in November, I already gave you a little hint, by telling you how I would like to see something like the Panasonic 14-42mm OIS pancake, a lens I owned before I switched to Fujifilm many years ago.

Well, now the XC15-45 is coming, and I think that’s great news for all X shooters, who are looking for the ultimate compact and flexible travel lens.

So, I personally highly welcome the addition… and what about you? Let’s try to find it out with a quick poll.

And make sure to follow us on Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter... because more rumors are coming :)

have a fantastic start in your week,
