Fujinon XF33mm f/1.2 Patent Spotted

Once upon a time, Fujifilm planed to make a Fujinon XF33mmF1.0, which they then scraped in favor of the smaller Fujinon XF50mm F1.0.

What we got instead, is the highly praised Fujinon XF33mmF1.4.

But it looks like at some point Fujifilm also played with the idea to make a Fujinon XF33mmF1.2, as such a patent has now been surfaced in Japanese language (down below the translated version) at IP force and found by Digicame-info.

I doubt Fujifilm will now also give us a Fujinon XF33mmF1.2, but let us know in the comments if you’d want one.

Lenstip Fujinon XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR Review: “SENSATIONAL Image Quality” and More XF18/23/33 Reviews

So, here is what I am probably going to do. I do plan to replace my current Fujinon XF 23mm F1.4 R with the brand new Fujinon XF23mm F1.4 R LM WR.

Not that I am unhappy with my 23mm, which has served me well for many years. At my parents-in-law home there are two big prints of images I took with that lens. And also at the wedding I shot last year is was my absolute workhorse along with my XF56mmF1.2 delivering images that the bridal couple totally love.

However, if I am in love with my XF35mmF1.4 and will never sell it, I can’t say the same of the XF23mmF1.4. So, if Fujifilm releases something “better”, then I have no problem to sell my good old 23mm for the newer version.

And I must say, the latest Lenstip review of this lens, is really pushing me towards replacing my XF23mmF1.4 faster than I actually planed. The only problem: go and find one! It’s mostly out of stock.

Look at the Pros and Cons that Lenstip identified for the new Fujinon XF23mm f/1.4 R LM WR:

Pros:

  • solid, weather-sealed casing, mostly made of metal,
  • sensational image quality in the frame centre,
  • very good image quality on the edge of the frame,
  • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • excellent correction of lateral chromatic aberration,
  • sensible coma correction,
  • blur areas pleasing to the eye,
  • efficient, silent, and accurate autofocus.

Cons:

  • a bit too high vignetting,
  • performance against bright light should have been better.

They conclude:

The results of our test show clearly that refreshing the 1.4/23 model was a very good idea. The new lens provides an excellent image quality across the frame, no matter what aperture you employ. Taking into account the fact that you deal here with a fast, wide-angle lens such an achievement is especially praiseworthy. The price of the Fujinon XF 23 mm f/1.4 R LM WR is not low, reaching $900, but complaining here would be justified only if the lens had some serious slip-ups. Our test showed that it performs exceedingly well in almost all categories so you can only shrug and say that high quality doesn’t come cheap.

You can read the full review at lenstip here.

And since we talk about the latest and greatest lenses, let’s add to Lenstip review also some other about the XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR, but also about the other two siblings, the XF18mmF1.4 R LM WR and the XF33mm F1.4 R LM WR.

Fujinon XF23mm f/1.4 R LM WR Reviews, XF70-300 vs XF100-400, Hands-on with XF33mmF1.4 and XF27mmF2.8 R WR and More

Compared: Sigma 16mmF1.4 vs Fujinon XF16mmF1.4, Sigma 30mmF1.4 vs XF33mmF1.4 and Sigma 56mmF1.4 vs XF56mmF1.2

We told you regarding the upcoming X mount Sigma lenses, that we don’t believe they will suffer the same faith of the X mount Zeiss Touit Trinity.

The main reason: the Zeiss Touit X lenses were more expensive than their Fujinon XF counterparts but did not offer a better image quality that would justify the price jump.

On the other hand, the Sigma X mount lenses will come in at a sensibly lower price tag than their Fujinon XF competitors and probably at the same time offer a very good image quality, too.

Well, today I’d like to go a bit more in depth and compare also some of the other specs thanks to the very useful B&H Photo comparison tool.

Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN vs Fujinon XF16mm f/1.4 R WR

  • the Sigma is 55% more affordable than the Fujinon lens
  • the Fujinon is 7.5% lighter than the Sigma
  • the Fujinon has better close focus distance capability (15cm vs 25cm)
  • full specs comparison here (filter size, optical design etc)

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN vs Fujinon XF33mm f/1.4 R LM WR

  • the Sigma is 58% more affordable than the Fujinon lens
  • the Sigma is 26% lighter than the Fujinon
  • both have the same close focus distance capability (30cm)
  • full specs comparison here (filter size, optical design etc)

Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN vs Fujinon XF56mm f/1.2 R

  • the Sigma is 52% more affordable than the Fujinon lens
  • the Sigma is 31% lighter than the Fujinon
  • the Sigma has better close focus distance capability (50cm vs 70cm)
  • full specs comparison here (filter size, optical design etc)

Given the gentle price and probably also the great performance, I believe the Sigma X mount lenses could potentially be an attractive option for many Fuji X shooters.

What I believe could be the biggest “deal breaker” is not that they are too close to existing Fujinon lenses, but that all the Sigma lenses mentioned above do not have an aperture ring, which is something many of us love and consider a key part of the Fuji X shooter experience.

At least for me it’s like this, so much so that I sold my original XF27mmF2.8 to get the new XF27mmF2.8 R WR just to have an aperture ring on the lens.

But other than that, I am happy Sigma joins the X mount with whatever lenses they want and I look forward to more in future.

Fujinon XF23mm f/1.4 MKII and XF33mmF1.4 / XF18mmF1.4 Reviews

In their best and worst episode for 2021, DPRTV praised the fact that Fujifilm was refreshing some of their older lenses.

Now we have to understand what a MKII lens is.

Surely the XF27mmF2.8 R WR and the XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR are MKII lenses, but those lenses inherit the same optical design of their predecessors.

The only MKII lens left is the XF23mm f/1.4 R LM WR, and that one indeed features an all new internal lens design.

As for the other lenses that come to mind, the XF33mm f/1.4 and the XF18mm f/1.4, Fujifilm does not consider those lenses as “MKII lenses”, so much so that Fujifilm did not discontinued the glorious XF35mmF1.4 R and especially the XF18mm f/1.4 is a different lens compared to the XF18mm f/2.

With that said, today we are going to cover the XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR, XF33mm f/1.4 R LM WR and XF18mm f/1.4 R LM WR in a dedicated roundup.

Consider that the XF23mm f/1.4 will ship only in February 2022. This time the delay is not caused by too high demand, but, as Fujifilm explained here, it’s the lack of parts that creates problems.

So there is not much to find about that lens (we covered it last month here with the latest reviews). There is, however, a quick look at it (and lots of samples) by Patrick La Roque, more in depth reviews by Ivan Joshua Loh and Keith Wee, as well as a video of Gajan Balan and Lee Zavitz (you’ll find it all down below).

It’s All In Stock (in Europe): Fujifilm GFX50SII, Fujinon GF35-70mm and XF33mmF1.4

Good news first: several stores spread all over Europe have now the Fujifilm GFX50SII, Fujinon GF35-70mm and XF33mmF1.4 in stock.

In fact I have received los of emails by FR-readers (thanks a lot), who either got their sample already or found the gear marked as available at several stores. So it looks like over here in Europe Fujifilm was able to keep its word and ship the gear by late September / early October.

So if you live in Europe, check out your local store to see if they have the gear available.

An exception is of course the Fujinon XF23mmF1.4, which Fujifilm said would ship only sometimes in November.

The bad news?

Well, if you live in North America, then nothing shipped and nothing is in stock so far. Seems like Fujifilm prioritized European customers this time.

To know when Fujifilm is expected to start shipping the latest X and GFX gear in USA, check out our huge in stock check here.
