There is a welcome Firmware upgrade for the Fringer Contax 645-GFX Smart adapter.
In short: you don’t need the GF 63mm anymore for the activation. All lens model recognized. Correct aperture/focal length info. Full EXIF support.
Fringer worked on the upgrade based from feedback he got from our (wonderful and gigantic) Fujifilm GFX facebook group. And remember: if all you want are fast news and rumors about Fujifilm GFX, then make sure to follow the Fujifilm GFX facebook page.
Ok… this is probably the first real life shootout between the Fujifilm GFX 50s and the Sony A9. And the guys engaged is this (friendly) battle are Ken Wheeler (the angry photographer) and Jason Lanier (a well known Sony Artisan). You can check out the shootout at Jason Lanier Youtube.
A quick note before I share the usual GFX roundup. Fringer Zhao notified us all here at the GFX facebook group, that his Contax 645 – GFX Smart Adapter is now available at fringeradapter. I already told you last week here, that it will come this week.

Fringer’s Contax 645 – GFX smart adapter is finally ready for demo. You can see pictures of the prototpye as well videos and samples images below. (Arca quick release compatible) tripod mount included.
Additional information
“GFX50s doesn’t support PDAF while Contax 645 lenses are designed for PDAF. Thus, it is extremely difficult to let those lenses AF fast and accurately on GFX50s. Two weeks ago I thought 140/2.8 would never AF properly on GFX50s. But finally I made it work just like the 45/2.8 and 35/3.5 do. However, their AF performance will never be comparable to native G mount lenses.
I have to emphasize AF is an experimental function of the adapter, on current stage at least. Don’t expect them perform like on a SLR. If AF performance can’t satisfy you, MF is always available. In the future, maybe a GFX body with PDAF support will come out and finally save us.
So far I only have one prototype in hand. In a month or so there will be a small batch of products ready for beta tests. Thus, don’t ask me where to buy it now. Test shots
Following test shots were all taken by myself with AF on.”
Below you can see the prototype, the demo video as well as some sample images.
Back at the beginning of March, here on FujiRumors we broke the news, that Fringer is developing an electronic smart adapter that will allow you to use Contax 645 lenses on Fujifilm GFX 50s and have autofocus and electronic aperture control.
Fringer says: “What you’ve seen is the first prototype and there are still a lot of problems to be solved. […] Although I’ll be working hard on the firmware, it would not be an easy task to make it relatively mature. Thus I can’t tell you when it will be ready for sale.”
As you can imagine, the comments over there are running hot, and Fringer is so kind to interact with the GFX community. Of course I can’t stay here now and copy and paste every comment, so feel free to join the discussions over there.
And of course I will keep you posted here on FujiRumors, with any news regarding this adapter.
Fringer, who already makes the world first Fuji X – Contax N smart adapter, has good news for Fujifilm GFX 50s owners: it’s a great camera for smart adapters!
They say that the GFX mount is obviously designed for working with electronic adapters and there shouldn’t be “any technical difficulties that prevent a smart adapter from working on GFX mount.” The G and XF mount design share a lot in common.
No PDAF, though, means that the AF performance probably won’t be that good.
Contax 645 lenses are very good candidates that may work full automatically on GFX50s. Now I have finished the first version of C645-GFX auto adapter’s design. There would be a fully functional prototype in 1 or 2 months if everything going OK during the development.
NEW: For everything Fujifilm GFX related, I’ve just lauched the dedicated GFX facebook page: 100% GFX news and rumors 24×7. If you want to interact anytime with GFX owners, you can join the 8000+ members at the Fujifilm GFX facebook group.
I already told here you that Fringer is developing the World’s First Fujifilm X – Contax N Smart Adapter with Autofocus & Electronic Aperture Control.
Well, I hear that they also plan a similar adapter for the GFX camera, which would allow full auto usage of the Contax645 lenses on the GFX 50s.
However…
there is no final decision made yet. Only when the GFX finally hits the market (and Fringer can own one), they will see if the development of such an adapter is possible.
