Fringer Firmware Update

FRINGER Press Release: “V2.3 firmware is avaliable now. It disables in-camera lens correction which let to severe distortion when connecting Contax 645 lenses to GFX50s using Fringer smart adapter. Please download the firmware v2.3 and upgrade your adapter according to the steps in user manual (section 6). […]

As you know, Fujifilm lenses largely depend on software corrections. Whatever the file format you use, i.e. JPG or RAW, you cannot switch it off. Even in the view finder you can only see the after-correction results. Since currently all the smart adapters in the market are impersonating a G mount lens, the in camera lens correction severely disturbed the adapted lenses’ output.

Now, we totally solved the problem and integrated the solution in the firmware ver2.3. After upgrading your adapter, the Fujifilm’s lens correction would be disabled in the view finder and the JPG or RAW files the camera produces.

Fringer Canon EF to Fuji X Smart Adapter by Fringer – Autofocus Video Demo

After the Steelsring Canon EF to Fuji X smart adapter, now also Fringer is working on his version of the EF to Fuji X smart adapter.

Fringer uploaded this video, and it looks like the AF speed is already promising. Fringer says (via fringerdev.com):

The smart adapter prototype was made about 7 months ago. Now I’ve got time to continue the development project. However, the time to market is still unkown.

It’s a great option for those, who would love to switch from Canon to Fuji and keep their Canon glass.

More and more smart adapters for Fujifilm are coming. Amongst the others, we have (or will soon get):

New firmware (v2.21) is Available for Fringer Contax 645- Fujifilm GFX Smart Adapter: Last 2 Contax645 Lenses Support added

Press release:

As I promised about a month ago, the new firmware supports all Contax 645 lenses’ AF on GFX50s is ready for download. Compare to firmware v2.1, 45-90/4.5 and 350/4 has been added to the AF list. Fringer C645-GFX adapter users, please visit https://www.fringeradapter.com to download new firmware, i.e. version 2.21, and upgrade your adapter according to the steps described in user’s manual. Or you can order a new adapter installed with the new firmware from https://www.fringeradapter.com/#buy-it-now .

Due to the design of the old lenses, their AF performance on Fujifilm GFX 50s has limitations. Don’t expect them perform like native G lenses on GFX50s or C645 lenses on C645 camera body. That would not be changed until new G mount camera introduces PDAF. Let’s pray that Sony would hand over medium frame CMOS equipped with latest technology sooner

New Fringer Smart Adapter Firmware

New firmware (v2.1) is available for C645-GFX smart adapter at fringerdev:

With the new firmware (v2.1), 55/3.5 and 210/4 have been added to the AF list. As I said earlier, I changed my mind and decided to open AF functions for all Contax 645 lenses on GFX. The last 2, i.e. 45-90 and 350/4, would also be added to AF list in the near future. Please visit https://www.fringeradapter.com/#service-and-resources to download the new firmware, the release notes and the new manual. Follow the described steps in the manual to upgrade your adapter. […]

I was conservative on AF performance of adapted Contax 645 lenses on CDAF bodies like GFX. However, more and more in field tests made me believe that the AF performance actually is quite good in most cases. And one more option for users should always be better. That’s why I changed my mind. But please don’t be too optimistic. The AF performance is still lower than GF lenses on GFX or C645 lenses on C645 body due to the limitations of the old lens design. Thus, if you find it doesn’t satisfy you, please change to MF. All C645 lens can work under MF mode. And their super fine MF rings are way better than GF lenses‘.

Fringer’s Contax 645 – GFX smart adapter

Fringer’s Contax 645 – GFX smart adapter is finally ready for demo. You can see pictures of the prototpye as well videos and samples images below. (Arca quick release compatible) tripod mount included.

Additional information

GFX50s doesn’t support PDAF while Contax 645 lenses are designed for PDAF. Thus, it is extremely difficult to let those lenses AF fast and accurately on GFX50s. Two weeks ago I thought 140/2.8 would never AF properly on GFX50s. But finally I made it work just like the 45/2.8 and 35/3.5 do. However, their AF performance will never be comparable to native G mount lenses.

I have to emphasize AF is an experimental function of the adapter, on current stage at least. Don’t expect them perform like on a SLR. If AF performance can’t satisfy you, MF is always available. In the future, maybe a GFX body with PDAF support will come out and finally save us.

So far I only have one prototype in hand. In a month or so there will be a small batch of products ready for beta tests. Thus, don’t ask me where to buy it now.

First Prototype (and Test Shots) of Fringer’s Contax 645 to Fujifilm GFX 50S Smart Adapter with AF and Electronic Aperture Control

Back at the beginning of March, here on FujiRumors we broke the news, that Fringer is developing an electronic smart adapter that will allow you to use Contax 645 lenses on Fujifilm GFX 50s and have autofocus and electronic aperture control.

Well, there is still nothing official on the Fringer website, but luckily the developer is part of our gigantic Fujifilm GFX facebook group, and shared the first working prototype image on our group here, as well as the first sample images taken with it.

Fringer says: “What you’ve seen is the first prototype and there are still a lot of problems to be solved. […] Although I’ll be working hard on the firmware, it would not be an easy task to make it relatively mature. Thus I can’t tell you when it will be ready for sale.”

As you can imagine, the comments over there are running hot, and Fringer is so kind to interact with the GFX community. Of course I can’t stay here now and copy and paste every comment, so feel free to join the discussions over there.

And of course I will keep you posted here on FujiRumors, with any news regarding this adapter.

Fringer says Fujifilm GFX 50S is A Great Camera for Smart Adapters! Contax 645 Adapter Protoype Ready in 1 or 2 Months

Fringer, who already makes the world first Fuji X – Contax N smart adapter, has good news for Fujifilm GFX 50s owners: it’s a great camera for smart adapters!

They say that the GFX mount is obviously designed for working with electronic adapters and there shouldn’t be “any technical difficulties that prevent a smart adapter from working on GFX mount.” The G and XF mount design share a lot in common.

No PDAF, though, means that the AF performance probably won’t be that good.

Contax 645 lenses are very good candidates that may work full automatically on GFX50s. Now I have finished the first version of C645-GFX auto adapter’s design. There would be a fully functional prototype in 1 or 2 months if everything going OK during the development.
