The Fujifilm X-E2: Beyond the Manual (use coupon XPERT40 for a 40% discount)

NEW: The Fujifilm X-T1: 111 X-Pert Tipps (use coupon XPERT40 for a 40% discount)

Today, Fujifilm announced another major firmware revision for the X-T1: Version 4 introduces a new autofocus system with zones and object tracking based on pattern recognition. It’s also faster and more accurate, and it’s easier to use. Over the past weeks, I was able to gather practical experience with several work-in-progress versions of what’s coming in late June. I am happy to share these experiences in this article.

U.S. workshop is happening!

Before we begin, I’d like to respond to more than two dozen inquiries I have received regarding the proposed Fuji X Secrets workshops in Santa Barbara, CA. Here’s the deal: It’s happening! There will be a 2-day workshop on the weekend of July 18 and 19 at the offices of Rocky Nook (my publisher), and those of you who have already contacted me via email will get a heads-up to register before everyone else. For the best possible learning effect, only 8 places will be available, so if you haven’t already contacted me to express your interest, now is your last chance to do so. You can find out more about my workshops and my contact information here.

Minor and major improvements

Firmware 4 offers several improvements with regards to usability, such as exposure compensation in manual mode with Auto-ISO, expanding the T setting on the shutter dial to cover the full range of available shutter speeds (30s – 1/32000s), getting rid of the macro button (you may want to reassign the button to select the new AF modes), displaying finer gridlines that obscure less of the actual scene, or replacing the term Silent Mode with something we can actually understand.

However, the most significant innovation in firmware 4 is the new autofocus system: It includes improved single-point focussing, introduces new zone focussing and finally offers “real” subject tracking over the entire sensor area. Click here for an overview of what’s new in firmware 4.

See Fuji’s Future through the FujiRumors Crystal Ball: Huge 2015 Rumor Overview, Facts Check and Reliability Rating!

 photo Cyristal Ball Empty 2_zpskpkj7tm8.jpg

Many of you asked me to introduce a FR1 to FR5 rating system like on all the other rumor sites, but I honestly don’t like rumor ratings. Here is why:

As you might know, in 2014 I’ve shared 74 correct rumors (82% hit rate). Many of them came from new or anonymous sources. So, just because a rumor comes from a new/anonymous source, it doesn’t mean it is wrong or has a low credibility.

Sure, I receive also plenty of fake rumors shared by people, who apparently do not like FujiRumors for some reason, but I was able to debunk almost all of them… so all those fake rumors luckily never went online (it would be a long, fun list to publish one day)!

Also, consider that many rumors have been shared several months (and even over a year) before the real product hit the market. For example, FR-sources shared already in July 2014, that the X-PRO2 will feature a 24MP sensor (and I’m confident that this rumor is correct).

Such Super Early Leaks can often be a problem for FR, because products that were really in Fuji’s plans at the moment when the rumor was shared, were dropped by Fuji later on (see X70, dual card slot for X-T1 and more). So it happens that correct rumors turn out to be wrong at the end… sh*t happens ;) .

That being said, I understand your need of a rating within this rumor jungle. Therefore, once or twice a year, I sum up all the rumors and try to order them according to their reliability. The list includes also rumors shared in 2014 which are still not verified.

This is also the occasion for me to say a BIG THANK YOU to all sources, who shared right rumors in the past years. I think 82% is an good hit rate for a rumor site, and it would not be possible without your amazing help…. we are all looking forward to hear more from you :) .

cheers,

THE FACT CHECK 2015

NOTE about the 2015 rumor Fact Check. I have made 2 lists. A “fair list” and an “unfair list“. The fair lists consist in all the rumors shared by different sources at different times, each of them could have been right or wrong. On the other hand, in the unfair list I put everything into the same pot. It’s not fair towards the work of my sources, but I share it out of a pre-emptive self-defense from those who want to put every into the same pot.

Fuji’s latest lens addition has “high-end” written all over it. The XF16mmF1.4 R WR is a fast, weather- and dust-sealed wide-angle prime lens with Nano-GI coating (to eliminate flare and ghosting), a 0.21x magnification close-up capability with a minimum focus distance of only 15 cm (thanks to two floating focus groups) and nine aperture blades for a smooth bokeh with circular blur discs.

^ X-T1, XF16mmF1.4 R WR, f/2.0, SOOC JPEG (Pro Neg. Std)

The lens also features two aspherical elements and two ED (extra low-dispersion) elements that minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations to surprisingly low levels and deliver corner-sharp images even at the widest aperture setting of f/1.4:

[UDPATE: 3.0.1 update released ]New versions of the Fujifilm X-Trans film style presets for Iridient Developer 3 are now available!

 photo irid_zpsx1mrzdsf.jpg

[UPDATE: The Iridient Developer 3.0.1 update is now available! A Fujifilm specific fix is included for Extreme Highlight Recovery with X-trans cameras when using DR200% and DR400% modes. Also includes some improvements to the new v3 Luminance noise reduction methods and v3 Color noise reduction can now also be applied prior to monochrome conversion which can lower overall noise levels for monochrome, particularly when using some monochrome conversion methods such as the RGB mixers. Iridient Developer 3.0.1 can now be downloaded here: http://iridientdigital.com/products/iridientdeveloper_download.html]

Brian has just posted improved Fujifilm X-Trans film style presets for Iridient Developer 3. These latest versions include improved results particularly at the extreme (dark shadows, bright highlights) ends of the tonal range. With the Vivid preset in particular dark shadows should be much improved and all color styles should show better results in bright highlight gradations and color saturation. The monochrome presets remain the same as in the previous versions.

The presets are now available also for the compact X-Trans models as well (XQ2, X30, XQ1 and X20).

The downloads include a ReadMe text file with detailed instructions on installation and use.

Film Style Preset Pack 5 for APS-C models (X100T, X-T1, X-E2, X-M1, X100S, X-E1 and X-Pro1) (9.6MB zip file) can be downloaded here:

DEAL: Zeiss Touit lenses now for $499 (32mm) and $699 (12mm).

 photo zeiss_zpsb1tsil1k.jpg

Again, a huge discount on the Zeiss Touit lenses for Fujifilm! And this time you don’t have to buy them both to profit from the big price drop, but you can purchase them separately.

You can grab the 12mm f/2.8 lens for $699 at BHphoto, AmazonUS and Adorama.
You can grab the 32mm f/1.8 lens for $499 at BHphoto, AmazonUS and Adorama.

This is just the last episode of a series of price drops and deals on the Zeiss Touit lenses for Fuji X-mount. The lenses started with a price tag of $1,250 for the 12mm and $900 for the 32mm almost 2 years ago.

Then Zeiss lowered the price to $999 for the 12mm and $719 for the 32mm. In June 2014 there was a terrific $800 price drop if you purchased both lenses together (you basically got one for free). Last year in November the rebate for the combo was of $420 (total price $1,299).

With this rebate, the price for both lenses is of $1,198… but, unlike most of the other times, you can grab them separately.

As you know, there is an up to $200 rebate also on the XF 35mm ($459) and XF 14mm ($699). So which one should you go for, the Zeiss or the Fujinon? Well, I recommend to read Rico’s excellent Fuji vs Zeiss comparison here… and then let us know what you consider the better choice.
