The WORST Thing About Fujifilm (and Other Brands) according to Chris & Jordan (PP)

In their latest episode, Chris and Jordan run over the worst things of every camera brand.

And after some nice praise for the Fujifilm system overall, they express their main complaint, which are:

  • Menu System needs imrpovements: for example, face detection and subject detection are separate items, slowing you down unnecessarily
  • Fujifilm cameras are more prone to write errors and bad surprises when using certain memory cards. To their credit, though, Fujifilm lists the compatible memory cards. But with other brands, they don’t experience as many issues when using non recommended memory cards

Sony A6700 Announced and it Makes the Fujifilm X-S20 Look Even Better ;)

Welcome Sony A6700

And suddenly I started reading headlines about the Sony A6700 like this:

“Sony didn’t hold back”
“It’s the best APS-C camera you can buy”
“The best hybrid camera for the money”

And since a firm believer of the fact that competition is great for customers, I started looking into the Sony A6700 hoping that it would indeed outperform Fujifilm.

Because if the A6700 would really be better than anything Fujifilm offers, then Fujifilm would be forced to catch up for example by releasing tons of Kaizen firmware updates to close the gap, or by speeding up the release of other cameras they have in the pipeline.

But the more I looked into the details (that many influencers – not all – somehow missed out to mention) the more disillusionment kicked in and I came to the preliminary conclusion that the Sony A6700 just shows us even more how amazing the Fujifilm X-S20 actually is.

Let me quickly explain by sharing a few facts.

  • A6700 has no joystick
    X-S20 has a joystick
  • A6700 LCD screen has about half of the resolution of the X-S20
  • A6700 has about half the fps bursts of the X-S20 (11 fps vs 20 fps)
  • A6700 has not the fully automatic subject detection mode
X-S20 detects all sort of subjects automatically
  • A6700 has no option for external cooling
X-S20 is compatible with the cooling fan
  • A6700 has few native APS-C lenses, you must buy the more expensive and bigger Full Frame lenses if you want more options
  • A6700 has no 4K DCI, no Open Gate, no 6K
    X-S20 has all of that
  • A6700 has no RAW video output
    X-S20 has it
  • A6700 is more expensive than the X-S20

Of course, these are just comparisons made on paper.

And on paper, there are areas in which the Sony A6700 wins, for example with its 4K/120p (although with a huge crop that reads out a sensor size smaller than Micro Four Thirds).

So before making any final conclusion, we certainly have to wait for real life comparisons.

Let’s just hope that those comparisons will be as objective as possible, even those that come from huge influencers that are not supported at all by Fujifilm (Fuji doesn’t send pre-production gear nor loaners to quite some of the big YouTubers that Sony instead wisely treats very well).

But what I can say for now is that for me the A6700 does not fully match the Fujifilm X-S20 in quite some areas that for many might be important. For example, a dealbreaker for me are the lack of joystick, no lovely film simulations, no internal RAW converter, lack of dedicated APS-C lens selection and so forth.

As opposed to what quite some YouTuber said, I feel that Sony did hold back with the Sony A6700 in order not to compete too strongly with their Full Frame lineup. A problem that Fujifilm luckily does not have, so they can pack it all into their APS-C cameras.

So I am personally disappointed. I was hoping for a stronger APS-C competitor that would put Fujifilm under huge pressure. Sadly the A6700, although a nice camera, is not that.

That’s my very personal opinion that has no pretension to be the truth. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

RUMOR: No Fujifilm X100V Successor in 2023 (X200, X100VI or X100W-hatever)

Everything is Possible (almost)

FujiRumors broke the rumors:

But we also know one more thing. Fujifilm two registrations filed so far: the Fujifilm FF230001 and FF230002.

Now, assuming that one of the two will be the Fujifilm GFX100 replacement, this leaves all possible options open for the second one.

Well, not really all options. I mean, I simply can’t see a Fujifilm X-H3 or Fujifilm X-H3s coming in September, as those cameras are hardly 1 year old (or less).  And also not the Fujifilm X-T6 or Fujifilm X-S30.

But other than that, we can hope for:

  • a Fujifilm X-T5s with 26MP stacked sensor of X-H2S
  • a Fujifilm X-Pro4 maybe with some curious solutions as many hope for example a monochrome sensor
  • a Fujifilm X-E5 which is not a dead line according to Fujifilm managers
  • the long awaited Fujifilm X-T40
  • the much wished Fujifilm X80 or Fujifilm XF20
  • the revival of Fuji’s entry level cameras with the Fujifilm X-T300, Fujifilm X-A8, Fujifilm X-A30 or Fujifilm X-M2
  • less likely in my opinion the Fujifilm GFX100S successor, Fujifilm GFX50R successor or Fujifilm GFX50SII successor, as I can’t see Fuji launching two GFX cameras on the same day (they never did that in the past, but never say never)

And in fact, I asked you to vote on which camera you’d like to get on September 12 and you can see the results here.

X100V successor is NOT possible

At this point you’ve noticed something: there is no Fujifilm X100V successor (X200, X100VI, X100 whatever it will be called) in the list.

Why?

Well, because despite being one of your top wished cameras (second only to another camera), and despite fake rumors already being shared about the X100V to come on September 12, I can now tell you with 110% certainty that there will not be any Fujifilm X100V replacement coming in 2023.

Trust me on this guys. No X100V successor in 2023.

I guess Fujifilm has no hurry at all to come out with a successor, given the fact, explained by Fujifilm managers, that if the world would stop to order X100V today, it would still take them 3 months to be able to ship all X100V orders placed until yesterday.

Seen from this perspective, the biggest problem of the Fujifilm X100VI (or whatever) is the terrific success of the X100V.

Feeling Lucky?

I feel lucky and will click the links to see if the X100V is in stock” :)

Which Fujifilm X Mount Autofocus Lens do You Own? – VOTE NOW

A year has passed from the last survey. New autofocus lenses from Fujifilm but also from other brands have joined in the meantime.

So it’s time to launch an updated survey and see how popular some of the new lenses have become (or not).

Sadly I could not include the Sigma 23mm f/1.4 DC DN X mount in the survey, as that one is not yet available for pre-order. Also the TTAritsan 32mm f /2.8, despite being officially teased since a long time, has not yet been announced and is for now available for Nikon Z mount only.

Another one missing, is the upcoming Viltrox 27mm f/1.2, which will be available mid-August.

Firmware Suggestions, Lens Wishes and More – FR-readers Wishlist Corner

I get many emails from FR-readers with wishes about all possible things regarding the Fujifilm system.

Today I decided to catch up with and share some of those wishes.

This time we don’t share camera related wishes, but only lens, firmware and more, as otherwise there would be simply just too much to cover and discuss at once. An additional wishlist roundup with even more wishes will follow later on.

Fujifilm Announces Plan to Deal with Parts Shortage Issue

Fujifilm seems to be trying to takle the parts shortage more seriously compared to that creative (and failed) solution of using blockchain for that purpose.

Now, down below you can read the google translated version of their plan, which is not 100% clear, but I guess it overall simply means: we’ll get more parts from more suppliers.

On the 6th, Fujifilm announced the goal of expanding the target to a total of 30,000 parts of 30 suppliers by the fiscal year for digital platforms that optimize parts inventories such as digital cameras. We have been conducting verification for 4300 items from 8 companies since October last year, but we have started full-scale operation as we have been able to confirm the cost reduction effect such as inventory management.

Oh well, better late than never I guess.

Let’s hope this will have positive effects also on the Fujifilm X100V, which in Japan is suspended since 8 months and as Fujifilm managers told us recently here, if the entire world would stop to order the Fujifilm X100V today, it would take Fujifilm still up to 3 months to manufacture and ship all the cameras already ordered until up to this point.

And quite frankly, there are plenty of other cameras that could benefit from a more stable parts procurement, maybe there could be even a revival for the Fujifilm X-E4, which was discontinued even though MANY of you had one on order. Fujifilm simply gave up on being ever able to ship it in a reasonable time.

So, we just leaked the date of the next Fujifilm X Summit, which will happen on September 12.

Now I am curious to know what you guys are hoping for to come.

That’s why I have now launched a survey that includes plausible, less plausible and borderline impossible options.

I’ll not include 110% impossible cameras, which would be for example a Fujifilm X-H3 or Fujifilm X-H3s, as those cameras are hardly 1 year old (or less). Or the Fujifilm X-T6 or Fujifilm X-S30.

What we will inlcude are the Fujifilm X-T5s (X-T5 with 26MP stacked sensor of X-H2S), Fujifilm X-Pro4, Fujifilm X-E5, Fujifilm X-T40, Fujifilm X100V successor (X200, X100VI, X100 whatever), Fujifilm X80, Fujifilm XF20, Fujifilm X-T300, Fujifilm X-A8, Fujifilm X-A30, Fujifilm X-M2, Fujifilm GFX100 successor, Fujifilm GFX100S successor, Fujifilm GFX50R successor and Fujifilm GFX50SII successor.

I will give you two options to vote on, because Fujifilm has so far registered two yet to be released cameras.

Have fun voting :)

On September 12 I would like to Get the Following Cameras (max 2 votes)

Top 5 Great Things You Might have Missed about the Fujifilm X-S20 and LOTS of X-S20 Media Slides

So, the Fujifilm X-S20 was launched a few weeks ago.

And as usual at launch day, there was a lot of buzz.

But in all that buzz, some stuff tends to go under that should actually get way more attention, and some stuff for some reason Fujifilm did not mention at all.

So, in order to celebrate this little wonderful camera, let me tell you the 5 things you might have missed about it.

Top 5 Things

  1. Double the internal memory of X-S10
This allows for longer bursts over the X-S10
  2. Smoother EVF than X-H2 and X-T5
The Fujifilm X-S20 can shoot up to 30fps (faster than X-H2 and X-T5). And, so I have been told, as opposed to the X-T5 and X-H2, at the respective highest fps the EVF runs even smoother than its higher end siblings showing no signs of jerkiness at all , and of course also no blackout (with full 100fps live-view). One of the advantages of coupling the new X Processor 5 with the fast to read out 26MP X-Trans IV sensor and a decent, but lower resolution viewfinder than the X-T5 and X-H2
  3. LCD Boost
Compared the the X-S10, the X-S20 sports an almost twice as high resolution on the LCD (1,04 vs 1,84 million dots)
  4. 6K 3:2 Open gate
The X-S20 can shoot 6K 3:2 Open Gate, which is not possible on the Fujifilm X-T5 and X-H2 for example
  5. Optional Fan
Extends filming duration at more than twice the time. note that CineD and other reviews got great heat management performance also without the fan (at CineD the battery died before the camera even was able to overheat). But under tough conditions, the fan will help and extend recording time for more than twice, as we can see from the media slides I will share below.

So, down below (or at my dropbox) are the media slides. These are screenshots I took during the Fujifilm USA Tech Talk. There might be some data in there you might find interesting. Enjoy :).

The Future of GFX: Which Sensor Do You Want for GFX100 Replacement – VOTE NOW

Fujifilm GFX100 Replacement

Until now it always worked like this in the Fujifilm world: Fuji’s APS-C series cameras get the latest and greatest technology and then the same sensors and processors are used on Fuji’s GFX cameras.

With two differences, of course.

  • the GFX sensor is about 4 times larger than the APS-C sensor
  • the GFX sensor has a Bayer filter array instead of X-Trans

But other than that, the silicon wafer used to make these sensors is exactly the same.

This means that for example the 26MP BSI X-Trans IV sensor is the very same we find on the GFX100/S, just Sony cuts a 4 times larger part out of it for the GFX sensor, hence 102 MP.

That’s great for Fujifilm, as it saves them R&D if they can use the same platforms over several systems and, for example, simplify the transfer of their APS-C firmware into their GFX system by using the same processor and sensor technology.

And what this mean for the rumored Fujifilm GFX100 replacement?

Well, if Fujifilm will continue doing what they always do then I see 3 options.

And I say 3 options, because the Fujifilm X-S20 shows us that Fujifilm is still considering that 26MP BSI sensor part of their lineup and hence to be potentially used in future cameras.

The Best Sensor is…

The three most obvious options at this point are:

  • 102 MP non-stacked BSI sensor (same of X-S20)
  • 102 MP stacked BSI sensor (same of X-H2S)
  • 158 MP non-stacked BSI sensor (same of X-T5)

But of course, there are also other sensors that Sony has available. We reported here about:

  • 162 MP stacked BSI sensor (in GFX format)
  • 123 MP global shutter sensor (in GFX format)

Sure, a 162MP stacked medium format sensor would be extremely expensive. And as far as global shutter goes, it’s not usually Fujifilm who uses breakthrough technology for first. Those sensors come from Sony and my guess is that before we don’t get it on a Sony camera, we also won’t see it on a Fuji camera.

That’s why for now I will not include the latter two options in the survey. But if sources tell me crazy things are going to happen with the GFX100 replacement, then you can bet I will let you know first here on FujiRumors.

The Survey

And now to the survey… and the question could not be easier than this one: which sensor do you want on the Fujifilm GFX100 replacement?

Which sensor would you like on the Fujifilm GFX100 Replacement?
