RUMOR: Fuji will launch a new XF 35mm f/1.4 lens (SRP = source was right in the past)!

 photo 35_zps872a70d8.png

the “old” XF 35mm: still out of stock after the high demand at the X-deals of February-April

_ _ _

First off: this rumor comes from a source, who was right in the past (SRP). If it is correct also this time, it will enter the elite team of trusted sources… until then, take it with a grain of salt!

The source told me that Fuji will launch a new 35mm f/1.4 lens. I do not know when it will be launched nor which improvements we can expect, but, as you may guess, I’m restlessly working on it even now on my lunch break from my day job (see facebook ;-) ). Once back at home this evening I’ll contact some sources and I hope to be able to give you an update soon.

Any help is highly appreciated and could make my work here a lot easier. You know how to contact me (via rumor box = anonymous (you can use a nickname so that I can recognize you in future) / via email at fujirumor [at] gmail.com)

cheers

X-T1 roundup

– The X-T1 is highly recommended also by photoxels here: “The Fujifilm X-T1 is a thoughtfully designed digital camera that is a joy to use and produces excellent image quality that rivals and even bests that of some enthusiast and top-end DSLRs. With its superb handling, direct control dials, intelligently designed viewfinder, weather-proofing, it is impossible not to revel in a perfect example of how cameras (retro or otherwise) should be built and operated. Highly recommended.”

soundimageplus‘ X-T1 just arrived. Read his first impressione here: “You could sell an organ and buy a Nikon D4 and sell another one for the team of sherpas to carry your gear around. You could buy a Nikon Df and a brown paper bag to put the camera in so that people don’t burst out laughing when they walk past you and then again you could buy an X-T1. […] It is nothing less than professional mirrorless in my book. Professional because it is designed to let the photographer control it rather than it control the photographer. It offers choices and simplicity and is well-thought out and well implemented. Time to get real? I just did.

For all those, like me, owning an X-E2, please stop reading now. You could get tempted to get rid of it and buy the X-T1.

I’m still resisting, but it’s incredible how everyone who gets his hands on this camera is simply enthusiastic about it. What’s so special about it? Well, in this post you’ll find the latest X-T1 tidbits. Ok, it’s the best X-camera ever made until now, but I’d get rid of my X-E2 only if the X-T1 would have a hybrid viewfinder… that said, I’ve never looked through the X-T1’s EVF by myself (and I can’t wait to do it), so the jury is still out.

At the bottom I’ve shared again Kai’s X-T1 review. I don’t remind any other of his reviews where he is so enthusiastic about a camera.

One more thing: I got emails of people from Europe and USA… they tell me that their X-T1 is ready to be shipped! That would be earlier than expected!

1) Let’s start this X-T1 roundup with techradar’s review here. They conclude that…

“… Fuji has done it again: produced a camera that is not only beautiful, but is capable of producing some superb images. We can see this being top of many a photographer’s lust list, and for good reason – it’s top of ours too.”

2) The list of review sites that award the X-T1 with their best ratings is rapidly growing. The next one is whatdigitalcamera here:

“The X-T1 isn’t entirely without flaw – it would have been nice to see Fujifilm add a touchscreen to the camera, while the option to have the camera in a silver finish would also be appealing.

That being said, there’s no denying the X-T1’s quality and on the whole it’s one of the best premium CSC’s on the market, reflected in its Gold Award status and a well deserved 93% overall score.”

3) Check focus-numerique here for some ISO test shots.

4) And some more X-T1 stuff: A: Fuji X-T1 & CP+ at kevinmullinsphotography here: “Part of my trip has also allowed me to use pre-production models of the XF56mm F1.2 and XF10-24mm F4 lenses. […]But the X-T1…..well, for the time being, all I’m saying is “Wow!”.  The view finder is simply gorgeous, low light and AF performance is again improved and AF-C is now very useableB: Grittymonkey: “Hi Patrick, If anyone was still looking for an unboxing video of the X-T1, here is mine: youtube… with a lot of French accent as a free extra… ;)C: Patrick Cavan Brown: “check out what camera David Alan Harvey is using! (video).” D: The 56mm and a little bit more of the X-T1 at neillsoden here: “Just to touch on the X-T1 again. This camera is great, fast and spot-on in the performance from the menus to the access to the SD card.”

Using the Fujifilm X-A1 [& X-M1]

by Rico Pfirstinger

Talk to Rico (open forum for questions & feedback)Rico’s Flickr sets – X-A1 sample images set – Mastering the Fujifilm X-Pro1 reading samples (65 free pages) – Pre-order the new book: Mastering the Fujifilm X-E1 and X-Pro1

Update [17/9/13]: Added several Lightroom 5.2 RAW samples to the image set.

It took a while, but Fujifilm finally decided to officially announce the X-A1, the long-planned sister model of the X-M1. Let’s cut right to the chase: There’s little difference between these cameras. They look very much the same, they offer the same buttons and controls, the same processor, the same operating speed/performance, the same features, the same menus, the same build, material and size, even the same 16 MP Sony sensor. Of course, there’s one minor but important difference to mention in the sensor department: The X-M1 features an X-Trans color filter array (CFA) without an anti-aliasing (AA) filter, while the X-A1 uses a conventional Bayer CFA with an AA filter (to reduce/eliminate unwanted moiré). You can have a look at the full specs by clicking here.

So what’s the deal? Well, the X-A1 is by quite a margin more affordable than the X-M1, and it comes with a different set of color options: red/silver, black, blue, black/silver and brown/silver. However, not all color options will be available in all markets. For example, customers here in Germany can only expect to be offered the X-A1 in black, blue and red/silver.

It has also been mentioned that the X-A1 will be distributed mostly online and through large outlets like Walmart or MediaMarkt instead of specialized camera stores. With the X-A1, Fuji is targeting price-sensitive value customers who are interested in upgrading to a compact camera with a larger DSLR-quality sensor. But that’s just the marketing. For many real-world uses, the differences in image quality between the X-A1 and X-M1 will be perfectly acceptable. If they weren’t, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus and the rest wouldn’t be able to sell any Bayer cameras to anybody. Let’s be smart: X-Trans is great, and it certainly has its advantages, but it’s not a requirement for taking great-looking images.

So if you aren’t married to X-Trans, the X-A1 is a viable and quite attractive option with an interesting value proposition. It’s also an affordable way to expand your existing X-series investment with a compact second generation option. It’s small and lightweight, it features a tiltable high-resolution LCD, it’s faster and more advanced (regarding both hardware and firmware) than the X-E1 or X-Pro1, and its Bayer sensor is comparable to current offerings from Nikon ([shoplink 13071 ebay]Nikon A[/shoplink]) and Ricoh ([shoplink 13349 ebay]Ricoh GR[/shoplink]). Please note that the pros and cons I mentioned in my X-M1 First Look article also apply to the X-A1, so instead of repeating myself all over again, I’d rather move along with new material.

I have been using an X-A1 pre-production sample with early pre-production firmware in the past six weeks along with an X-M1, and I have since silently updated the aforementioned X-M1 First Look article with additional findings regarding the pros and cons against the X-E1. So if you haven’t done so very recently, please consider checking out this article again.

Since both cameras share a common feature set and the same capabilities, I want to fill this column sharing my experiences with the X-A1 and X-M1. I have also prepared an X-A1 sample set with 75 images, and I have expanded my X-M1 sample set to more than 160 pictures, including several external RAW conversions. Unfortunately, there was no external RAW support for the X-A1 available at the time of this writing, but I’m confident this will change soon.

Once external RAW support and production samples of both the X-M1 and X-A1 become equally available, I will revisit the topic with a “shootout” between these sibling cameras, so there will eventually be a third part to this story.

Ready, Set, Go!

First Look: X-M1 with New Kit Zoom and Pancake Lens

Edit [16/9/13]: Added additional findings to the “pro” section of this article.

Edit [1/8/13]: Added plenty of new samples, both JPEG and RAW (Lightroom & Silkypix) to the Flickr set. Updated Pro/Con comparison with X-E1.

Edit [30/6/13]: Added several SOOC JPEG portrait samples taken with the X-M1 and the two new lenses to the Flickr set.

Edit [29/6/13]: Added my experiences using an USB adapter to get RR-80 remote controls to work with the X-M1

Fujifilm’s new X-M1 mid-range system camera is targeting users and fans of premium compact cameras (like the Sony RX100 or Fujifilm X10, X20 and XF1) as well as users of entry-level DSLR cameras who do not want to compromise on image quality, but prefer a small, lightweight and still affordable package. It’s important to recognize that the X-M1 was at least as much inspired by the Fujifilm X20 and XF1 as was by its older and more expensive system camera sibling, the X-E1.

In other words: This is as much a smaller X-E1 as it is an APS-C sensor sized system camera version of the XF1 or X20. Believe it or not, but the X10/X20 is actually a little bit larger than the body of the X-M1.

A Little Bit of Everything

This turns the X-M1 into kind of a hybrid system: It features the mode dial, scene modes, additional AF modes (including face recognition and pattern tracking), an additional OIS mode and the “art filters” of Fuji’s premium compact and bridge cameras. At the same time, it records images with the same 16 MP APS-C X-Trans sensor found in the larger and more expensive X-Pro1 or X-E1.

In terms of image processing, the tiny X-M1 even surpasses its bigger siblings with the faster EXR Processor II engine already known from the X100S and X20, with conventional 12 Bit RAW image recording. This turns the X-M1 into a pretty responsive camera (at least in Fuji terms). A 95 MB/s SD card (such as a [shoplink 13681]SanDisk Extreme Pro[/shoplink]) certainly pays-off when used in concert with this camera. It takes the X-M1 just about 2 seconds to copy 3 FINE+RAW images from its internal buffer to the card. With its modest burst rate of 5.6 frames per second, this means that the camera can shoot 13 frames in a row at full speed, even though the buffer is just large enough to hold 10 FINE+RAW images at any given time.

Welcome to Plasticland!

Fujifilm X-M1: Pre-order at AmazonUK

The X-M1 is now available for pre-order at AmazonUK here.

You can read pixelogist thoughts about the new Fuji camera here. From the conclusions:

“For the price, the X-M1 looks to be an excellent product. The feature list speaks for itself: the awesome X-Trans sensor, the EXR II processor, fast 5.6fps shooting, 1080p video with the option for an external mic, built-in WiFi, and even an improved contrast detect AF system that is supposed to be very fast. All that in a beautifully designed rangefinder-style body that goes for $699. Or $799 for the kit However, I didn’t’ love everything about it. The lack of any sort of viewfinder will be a big negative for some. Me included. That’s part of the whole draw of the X-series mirrorless system, isn’t it?”
