We have more confirmation about the Fujfilm X-T10 and additional specs, leaked by digicame-info. Rumors shared previously here on FR are confirmed: the pop-up flash, the smaller EVF compared to X-T1, the name (X-T10), the kit lens will be an XC lens.

The body will be made out of metal and will have Five dials. I have no information about a PASM dial… so I think it won’t feature a PASM dial.

And stay tuned on FujiRrumos on May 18 via facebook, google+, RSS-feed and twitter.

miXed Zone: AF-performance with FW 3.10, about Kaizen, Fuji Interview, X-Trans + C1… and Max Angeloni’s “holy” Fuji work!

 photo crucis_zpsng82wiml.png

If you are in Rome in these holy Easter days, don’t miss to check out Max Angeloni’s exhibition about the Way of the Cross in one of the arguably most important baroque churches worldwide, the Basilica di Sant’Andrea della Valle (the exhibition ends on the 8th of April.)

X-Photographer Max Angeloni used exclusively Fuji X gear for this important assignment: the Fujifilm X-T1 and three lenses (23mm, 35mm and 56mm… and two 180 Watt lights).

If you can’t go to Rome, take a look at his work at riflessifotografici (translation).

INTERVIEW

There is an interview with Fujifilm Japan’s Kunio Aoyama and Hiroto Nakata at mirrorlessons. Here some excerpts (FYI, here are the interviews with Mr. Iida Toshihisa & Makoto Oishi):

– NEW LENSES: “We are trying to understand where the lack of coverage is. For example, tilt-shift lenses or fisheye lenses or extreme telephoto lenses. […] Maybe when we announce the next generation of cameras, we can announce the next roadmap.”

– ORGANIC SENSOR: “We are continuing to develop the sensor. […] The organic sensor itself is designed not only for cameras but also for other applications. So originally the technology and development is not for digital cameras. […] We are trying to figure out if the sensor is best for cameras, video or other hardware products. We are still studying and developing the package.

Make sure to check out the whole interview at mirrorlessons… and just a little note about the Organic Sensor. A Fuji Guy said to bigheadtaco at youtube (minute 13:00) that there are some challenges in the production the organic sensor, but ones these issues are fixed “we are going to see an entire new page of sensor technology!”

The Problem with the organic sensor? As shared in this rumor, it could be due to too much battery drain and heat production..

Matt Russell: “Patrick, Well, I finally did it. I sold my Canon 5D Mark II with 5 lenses and bought a X-T1 with the 10-24mm, 55-200, and the 56mm. After having bought the X100s and been impressed with it, I can’t say how impressed I am with the X-T1 and the lenses. I’m starting to branch out in my photography (portraits, street, etc) which I felt inhibited by the size, bulk, and attention my Canon gear garnered. I would have to pick and choose which Canon gear to leave home as it all wouldn’t fit into my gear bag. I now carry all my Fuji gear (X-T1, 3 lenses, X100S) and have room to spare and less of a load. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I will never go back to a DSLR.” mjrussellphotography.com/latestmjrussellphotography.com/gallery/places/connecticu

– Hello Fuji X-T1, Bye-Bye NEX-7 at doppler-photo.net: “All told, I’m really happy, and looking forward to shooting lots more stuff with this sucker. Whee! :o) ”

– Fuji X-T1 Review at peterlangfelder: “Even though the Fuji X-T1 is not anywhere near perfect (if there is a such thing as a perfect camera for me), I enjoy using this camera very much, period. Look at it this way, I have taken over 6000 exposures in just one month (and I didn’t go on any kind of vacation). This tells you how much I like it. I take it everywhere with me. It has become a part of me. I hope this is not just some kind of temporary excitement from buying a new camera; rather I hope to continue using this camera as often as when I first bought it, taking my photography skills to new heights faster than ever before.”

– Fuji X-T1 (+ 56 f/1.2) review part 2 at karlbratbyphotographer: “The X-T1’s size and the ability to put a whole system in a small discreet bag is a God send for me and many other pros around the globe, it may not have the same image quality of the full frame camera (but not far off), it may have issues with other things compared to a mirrored camera, full frame or not, the question should be. Is it good enough? And my answer to that is a big fat YES, I would happily use the X-T1 for everything but the most exacting of my work, and coming from me, a total nit picking anal perfectionist, that is saying something and for those that know me will know, I never lie, I tell it like it is, I often upset people with my honesty and frankness, but like I’ve said before I’m old school, if its rubbish I will say its rubbish.”

I will never drag 2 Canon full frame cameras around Africa, Asia, and South America again!

XF 10-24mm
[shopcountry 20414]

– Review: Fujifilm Fujinon XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS at admiringlight: “Ultimately, this lens is about quality imaging and convenience.  Rather than carrying two or three lenses to cover the wide-angle range, one can simply grab this one lens and get excellent images over a wide range of focal lengths.  The image stabilizer and quick focus add even more of a reason to pick up this lens.  At $999, the lens isn’t cheap, though it’s not a particularly out of line price compared to the competition.”

Fuji VS Leica

Fuji X-E2 – 10-24mm and 56mm f/1.2 lenses. Better than Leica? at soundimageplus: “For me Fuji are moving beyond Leica and from being pretty much a copycat of that illustrious brand they seem to be taking the small unobtrusive high-quality camera concept into new territory. Better viewfinders, better high ISO performance, better focusing and yes  I’m going to write this, better lenses.”

RAW-conversion

– Sharpening – Monster Under the Bed – Debunked at olafphotoblog: “The RL Deconvolution is the method we use. After experimenting with different tools we found this process the best in treating the X-Trans sensor files. With the most recent X-T1 and Fuji X100S cameras we use 0.39. Indeed, we confirm Brian’s point that this method significantly improves micro contrast and details.

Processing Fuji Images “Flat” from Iridient Developer and Finishing in Lightroom at thomasfitzgeraldphotography: “I took inspiration from a technique commonly used in cinematography. In order to maximise the dynamic range on certain cameras, a cinematographer will set it to shoot “flat”. That is, they will keep the contrast and saturation low, which in turn maximises the amount of brightness and shadow information that can be captured. The contrast and look is added back in post production (through a process called Colour Grading). So, I used this idea and created settings in Iridient Developer that would render images out in a similar “flat” setting, thereby maximising the highlight and shadow details so you’re not loosing anything when you save out as a 16 bit RGB file rather than a RAW file. Basically the idea is to make sure that there is no clipped information in the shadows or highlights which, when saved as a tiff, would be unrecoverable. ”

– Can the X-Trans Sensor’s Image Detail be Improved with Topaz Detail 3? at thewanderinglensman: “There you have it.  My initial tests in bringing out detail on X-T1 raw image files using a plug in in conjunction with Lightroom 5.4.  Is it the best?  Not quite in my opinion.  But it works pretty well.  The downside, however, is that the detail that should be apparent from the beginning in the initial raw conversion has to be drawn out through a convoluted process of using a plug-in for each image you want to improve.  That takes time and patience.

– Rejoice! Lightroom supports Fuji X at johncaz: “So I did some testing myself, and the conclusion is that it’s true, you can now shoot only RAW without the fear that an out of camera JPEG may be better! So no more shooting RAW plus JPEG’s, thank you Fuji! This is something I never had with Nikon raw files thanks to Nikon’s stubbornness to not cooperate with Adobe and others. Another big plus which I never saw with my Nikon files, is that Lightroom automatically adjusts for lens corrections thanks again to Fuji’s cooperation for better support.  No need to pick an Adobe-made less-than-perfect lens profile like I used to with my Nikon gear LOL.”

Mastering the Fujifilm X-E1 and X-Pro1 – The Fujifilm X-E2 – Beyond the Manual (pre-order)

The retro-styled X-T1 is Fujifilm’s attempt to inject state-of-the-art DSLR performance into its line of mirrorless X-series cameras. With twin multi-functional command dials, five manual dials (ISO, drive mode, shutter speed, photometry & exposure compensation) and an aperture ring on most native lenses, the X-T1 features a blend of classic and modern controls that should appeal to the X-series’ target audience of experienced photographers—enthusiasts and professionals alike.

The X-T1 looks and feels like a DSLR, and yet it’s still a mirrorless live-view camera with a large WYSIWYG real-time viewfinder in a lightweight, compact and weather resistant body. In an ironic twist of events, the X-T1 is pretty much the “hybrid camera” that Nikon promised—but never delivered—in its popular viral Df campaign.

The X-T1 features the same 16 MP X-Trans II sensor and EXR Processor II as the X-E2 (or X100S). However, overall processing speed has been improved through hardware and software changes. There’s no doubt that the X-T1 is Fujifilm’s fastest X-series camera. However, maximum shutter speed is still limited to 1/4000s, and maximum flash sync speed is limited to 1/180s (though many flash units will perfectly work at 1/250s).

Sample Images

I have prepared two sample sets shot with X-T1: a regular set and a set featuring high-speed series with tracking AF.

Real-time EVF (and LCD)

With a display lag of only 0.005 seconds (X-E2: 0.05s, Olympus OM-D E-M1: 0.029s), the X-T1 is ready to capture fast action, including moving objects. The camera’s predictive autofocus encompasses the central nine autofocus frames (there’s a total of 49) and works with bursts of either 3 or 8 frames per second (fps) of continuous shooting. The large electronic viewfinder (EVF) is housed in the “hump” and delivers an impressive magnification of 0.77x (E-M1: 0.74x, X-E2: 0.64x) and a refresh rate of 54 fps (E-M1: 60 fps, X-E2: 50 fps). The X-T1 offers this high refresh rate even in low light: At 1.6 EV, it still clocks 54 fps, while the E-M1 slows down to 30 fps and the X-E2 to 20 fps.

Edit [1/8/13]: Added plenty of new samples, both JPEG and RAW (Lightroom & Silkypix) to the Flickr set. Updated Pro/Con comparison with X-E1.

Edit [30/6/13]: Added several SOOC JPEG portrait samples taken with the X-M1 and the two new lenses to the Flickr set.

Edit [29/6/13]: Added my experiences using an USB adapter to get RR-80 remote controls to work with the X-M1

Fujifilm’s new X-M1 mid-range system camera is targeting users and fans of premium compact cameras (like the Sony RX100 or Fujifilm X10, X20 and XF1) as well as users of entry-level DSLR cameras who do not want to compromise on image quality, but prefer a small, lightweight and still affordable package. It’s important to recognize that the X-M1 was at least as much inspired by the Fujifilm X20 and XF1 as was by its older and more expensive system camera sibling, the X-E1.

In other words: This is as much a smaller X-E1 as it is an APS-C sensor sized system camera version of the XF1 or X20. Believe it or not, but the X10/X20 is actually a little bit larger than the body of the X-M1.

A Little Bit of Everything

This turns the X-M1 into kind of a hybrid system: It features the mode dial, scene modes, additional AF modes (including face recognition and pattern tracking), an additional OIS mode and the “art filters” of Fuji’s premium compact and bridge cameras. At the same time, it records images with the same 16 MP APS-C X-Trans sensor found in the larger and more expensive X-Pro1 or X-E1.

In terms of image processing, the tiny X-M1 even surpasses its bigger siblings with the faster EXR Processor II engine already known from the X100S and X20, with conventional 12 Bit RAW image recording. This turns the X-M1 into a pretty responsive camera (at least in Fuji terms). A 95 MB/s SD card (such as a [shoplink 13681]SanDisk Extreme Pro[/shoplink]) certainly pays-off when used in concert with this camera. It takes the X-M1 just about 2 seconds to copy 3 FINE+RAW images from its internal buffer to the card. With its modest burst rate of 5.6 frames per second, this means that the camera can shoot 13 frames in a row at full speed, even though the buffer is just large enough to hold 10 FINE+RAW images at any given time.
