Fujifilm GFX100 First Look: “Medium Format is Boss. All GF Lenses Need Firmware Update for Phase Detection AF Support”

Fujifilm GFX100

BHphoto went hands on with the Fujifilm GFX100. You can see their full video here.

  • no dials, feels like a camera of 2019
  • extreme cropping capability
  • autofocus feels like X-T3. Not that super fast, since it the AF motor has to move more glass inside GF lenses, but very very fast
  • all GF lenses need a firmware update to support phase detection AF
  • bigger glass is just a completely different look compared to full frame
  • vertical grip too sleek. Should be more rubberized and ergonomic
  • aimed at professionals and enthusiasts
  • for sports and wildlife there are higher frame rates options. But the GFX100 goes at 5fps
  • they tested the 5fps, and it hit every frame
  • video is a huge leap over what Fujifilm GFX50S and GFX50R can do
  • Medium Format is Boss! It’s ridiculous to compare it to full frame

Fujifilm GFX100 Hands On Reviews

Matt Granger went hands on with the Fujifilm GFX100.

He starts by saying that he does not get any attention by Fujifilm, and was not invited to Japan for the launch. So he needed to wait for the Fujifilm GFX100 to be displayed at a photography fair, and all he could do is to talk to Fuji reps there and go only shortly hands on with the camera. So what he can share for now is only a quick first look.

Other major youtube channels also complaint about Fujifilm not flying them to exclusive events around the world (which is what Sony does all the time). If this is good or bad, I leave the judgement to you.

The Birth of the Fujifilm GFX100: Documenting 8 Months of Development Process (Part 1)

Fujifilm GFX100

For the last 8 months Fujifilm let Cinema5D closely monitor the birth of their new flagship large format sensor creation, the Fujifilm GFX 100.

Now they published their first video covering the birth of the Fujifilm GFX100. Part 2 will follow later and bring us inside the Fujifilm factory.

Here is what we learn, and at the bottom some screenshots from the video:

Photons to Photos: Fujifilm GFX100 Preliminary Dynamic Range and Other Sensor Measurements Results

Fujifilm GFX100 Sensor Data

Photons to Photos has released prelimiary Fujifilm GFX100 (non production) sensor measurement data.

In terms of dynamic range, the 100 megapixel GFX100 beats all full frame cameras. If you need even more dynamic range, you have to pay $40,000 for a Phase One.

The bump you see at ISO800 is due to dual conversion gain.

Earlier today we shared the DPReview lab shots, which in my eyes showed impressive results in favor of the Fujifilm GFX100.

DPReview: Fujifilm GFX100 Added to Studio Scene Test vs GFX50S, Sony a7rIII, Nikon Z7, Panasonic S1R

DPReview added the Fujifilm GFX100 to their studio scene comparison tool.

Compared to the Fujifilm GFX50S, the Fujifilm GFX100 shows noticably less moire, and it is also sharper than pretty much any other camera on the DPReview database. Regarding color noise at high ISO, the Fujifilm GFX100 is also superior to the GFX50S and any other full frame camera for that matter.

If you are into medium format GFX, then the GFX100 looks like a sensible step up in image quality.

You can download the RAW studio lab shots of DPR, and open them Adobe Lightroom and since today also at Capture One Pro 12.

And now, happy pixel peeping to all of you :)

Capture One Pro 12.0.4 Adds Fujifilm GFX100 and Fujinon Lens Support

Capture One Pro 12.0.4 (which is still 50% off) has just been released.

It adds support for Fujifilm GFX100 and also for the following Fujinon XF/XC lenses:

Fujifilm GFX100: Most Compelling Reason to Step Up from Full Frame

Fujifilm GFX100

The Fujifilm GFX100 is getting tons of positive feedback so far, and it seems that reviewers can’t really believe they are holding a medium format sensor camera in their hands, since everything with a digital sensor bigger than 35mm was notoriously slow.

The Fujifilm GFX100 changed the game: it is fast and responsive, despite having a 70% larger sensor than full frame and 100 megapixel. And thanks to IBIS, it is also versatile.

I am sure: Fujifilm has winner here!

Also Cameralabs went hands on with the Fujifilm GFX100. Down below are his findings and his video above:
